Auriellen Nationalism and You

Written by: Researcher Colin Rivera

It is definitely known that Aurielle is very nationalistic and militaristic, however, few know that this Auriellen nationalism is distinct from the usual kind of nationalism that many nations in the Frontrooms have.

The kind present in Aurielle is actually a limbo between patriotism and nationalism. This phenomenon present within Aurielle is known as Aurielo Patoichism; it combines both elements of patriotism and nationalism and exists to make Aurielle a cohesive state, as well as making Aurielle what it generally is.

The way you gain citizenship in Aurielle is quite simple, as much as interacting with or even passing by an Auriellen colony or city makes you a citizen. If Aurielle were to be, in essence, a true nationalistic state, it would become extremely disorganized and filled with internal conflicts due to the backgrounds of the individuals who gain citizenship. Why? Well, it’s because of how nationalism works. Traditionally, nationalism is bound up with a hatred of foreigners and foreign countries. It assumes that ‘our’ nation has a right to conquer others, and purge itself of all people who are not whatever the establishment ideal is. This means nationalism tends to be oppressive of other people, and that people’s self-ideal is tied up with being a member of the nation. It also purges the nation of any traditions of openness or exploration. Additionally, it involves blaming everything in history that has gone wrong on the groups that are defined as ‘evil’ by the government, which is why this form of thinking is usually preferred by fascist and authoritarian governments.

Who usually pushes the agenda of nationalism even goes against the form of government that Aurielle is, which is a democracy. And considering how Aurielle enjoys support from outside groups such as the Backroom Colonists or B.I.F., choosing an ideology that despises outsiders goes against the very doctrine of political cooperation that is present throughout the state. So, how did they do it? How did they make nationalism work in Aurielle? Well, that is where Aurielo Patoichism steps in. Although, by definition, Aurielo Patoichism bears the most resemblance to patriotism.

Aurielo Patoichism believes that the love for your nation is one of the most important aspects of being a citizen; however, this does not mean that any other individual of different backgrounds is exempt from—even those who were previous enemies—taking part in it. It also states that you must not harm your nation or its allies, for selfish acts are to be punished. The nationalism aspect within AP is that it also involves “evil groups" or groups that have done wrong to the state, but unlike regular nationalism where these groups are supposed to be purged, AP defines these groups as unguided and that if they are willing to cooperate with us, then they shall be forgiven. Additional snippets of nationalism can be seen with its stance on offensive and defensive wars; however, this could’ve developed due to the militarism and general history of Aurielle.

This is why Auriellen society as a whole involves being generally nice towards newcomers and having good ethics; it is to make new citizens feel included, and to properly integrate them into Aurielle. This ideology could also be generally tied to the reason so many people opposed and resisted the M.E.G. occupation, why so many were willing to fight, or why even despite heavy losses, morale did not falter in wars.

Now, how does this affect you? Researchers have concluded that this ideology has begun a popularization process in groups outside of Aurielle, with certain Backroom Colonists colonies adopting it. The rate at which it is growing is still unknown. The reason for this could be how successful it has been in Aurielle. However, critics remark that Aurielo Patoichism grew and could prosper within Aurielle because of a very specific set of key events. Baron Tau has stated that “the creation of Aurielo Patoichism came due to an overall hatred towards the M.E.G. and their actions during the AAC Incident as well as their embargo on trading and commerce, all of this which could have easily turned into outright nationalism or fascism if it weren't for a direct intervention by the majority peace and research-oriented population.” although many others have argued that if done correctly, Aurielo Patoichism could function without the steps that were made to create it.

Political scientist Tom Cal argued that “the majority of groups present within the backrooms are already research-oriented; what is missing is the war, although I believe that with enough changes, it is entirely possible." The current talks about this are pretty divided; however, anti-Aurielo Patoichism sentiment is mainly located within Z.E.T.A. and M.E.G., though it is present throughout other groups. However, the reason they are against this is mainly because of political tensions rather than the effectiveness of the ideology.
