Description[]

Level 257 (lobby)An image of a Splinter Jellyfish, the entity exposes its thorns to warn the photographer.

Entity 117, commonly referred to as Splinter Jellyfish, are passive entities that inhabit the oceans of The Backrooms. They appear to be descendants of the "graptolites" (an extinct species of The Frontrooms).

Splinter Jellyfish are fast and flexive; they use this advantage for hunting or escaping. Entity 117 can sense danger from a distance, but they generally only defend themselves near their colony. The entity has developed spines on its tentacles, but as has been mentioned, they don't usually use them due to their evasive nature.

The entity can't be domesticated; attempts to provide food or a pleasant environment will only be met with indifference.

Habitat[]

Entity 117 remains in salt water with generally cold temperatures. They hate contact with other living beings, so they live in deep caves and only come out to feed on plankton or small fish. Splinter Jellyfish look for dark places (usually caves or ravines) to establish their colonies. Solitary specimens are rarely found.

Perfect biomes for the entity population are the ones in Level 205, and Level 202.

Behavior[]

The behavior of Entity 117 is evasive, both for humans and other entities. Their colony seems to be more important than their own lives, since being close to them will change their behavior to an aggressive one.

Entity 117, when attacking, will quickly approach and try to put its tentacles on the victim's face, blinding and poisoning them. After attacking, Entity 117 will begin its escape to a nearby shelter or cave.

Hierarchy[]

Colonies operate with a hierarchy system that benefits whoever provides more resources to the group. Splinter Jellyfish, if they want a higher position, they must maximize their hunting and share it with others within the colony. After a season, the group that has shared the most will be congratulated until the next season.

The only known benefit of a high position is simply receiving food during the next season. For Entity 117, a season can vary between 6 to 7 weeks.

Biology[]

617 backgroundA group of Splinter Jellyfish incubating their eggs.

Splinter Jellyfish doesn't present very notable differences from a common jellyfish. They have an umbrella and some tentacles, although these have developed thorns as a defense.

The size of Entity 117 doesn't exceed the average human size; even so, being attacked by it can be dangerous. The thorns of the Splinter Jellyfish have doses of poison; if the wanderer is attacked, they will inevitably end up with some thorns from Entity 117's tentacles. The entity's bites aren't mortal; however, they are very painful, and their effect can last days.

The species reproduces asexually. Unlike a common jellyfish, Entity 117 incubates their eggs near their umbrella. The larvae that hatch from the eggs can take weeks before reaching their maximum point of maturity.

Discovery[]

Entity 117 was first reported on 9nd November 2015 by the M.E.G. in a frozen fissure in Level 205. A small colony had been found with at least 15 specimens, that after a few days of extraction, were properly studied.
