Description[]

Refuse refers to entities within the Backrooms that resemble dark, humanoid figures seemingly frozen in a grieving pose. They do not move at all and, from afar, appear to resemble statues or mannequins. These entities exhibit highly volatile behaviors and can cause deadly bursts of energy capable of disabling all electric devices within a 2-mile radius. As such, it is highly recommended that wanderers stay away from these entities at all costs.

Behavior[]

The Refuse is normally a docile creature, usually choosing to remain in a fixed location for hours at a time. During this state, it will not produce any noise, and will only enter an active state when it senses a wanderer approaching. In this state, it will create haunting sound of crying that can only be heard by the wanderer approaching them. The Refuse will also create heavy vibrations around them to deter the wanderer from getting closer. If the wanderer chooses to ignore it and continue approaching the entity, however, it will enter a volatile state, where it can explode in a violent release of energy. The explosion is able to heat the air around the Refuse rapidly, up to almost 550°C, making it extremely deadly. Despite this, the explosion does not seem to kill the entity entirely. However, it is crucial to note that this explosion will overheat all electronics within a 2-mile radius, causing them to become defective. (This also includes fluorescent lights, meaning that an explosion caused by a Refuse can cause blackouts in certain levels that could last up to 2 months.) Due to this, any wanderers that find themselves in an encounter with a Refuse are urged to leave its vicinity immediately.

Aside from their interactions with wanderers, not much else is known about Refuses. Certain entities, like Smilers and Anethikas, have been shown to behave differently around a Refuse, and some entities even avoid being near one entirely. However, there's no concrete evidence showing that other entities in the Backrooms acknowledge the existence of Refuses, and the behaviors of other entities around a Refuse remain unexplained.

Biology[]

The biological makeup of Refuses is highly speculative due to the volatile nature of the entity. Many wanderers have theorized that Refuses are composed of dust and ash found naturally in the Backrooms, which explains why they do not die upon imploding. Another popular theory states that Refuses are remnants of the mind of a person who has died within the Backrooms, consisting of only the darkest parts. These remnants are then given physical bodies in the form of Refuses. Even with these theories, it is still important to remember that they are only speculations, and often lack crucial evidence to support their claims. Therefore, all information regarding the biology of Refuses is to be heavily scrutinized before being taken as factual.

Discovery[]

It is unknown when Refuses were first discovered in the Backrooms, as there have been many unconfirmed reports and sightings of them dating all the way back to the 1980s, and descriptions of entities similar to them have been around even longer than that. But the first ever confirmed discovery of a Refuse was on July 12th of 2005, when M.E.G. operatives were called to investigate a mysterious figure that had appeared in the middle of a wanderer outpost on Level 4. Not long after this, a massive explosion would occur in outpost, prompting the M.E.G. to investigate the causes of the incident and, by extension, the mysterious figure itself.

Regret Infused Entities

After several tests were conducted on a sample of ash taken from a remnant, one conclusion about the origins of these entities becomes clear. Their bodies contain high amounts of ███████ and ███, two substances that have been theorized to be the backbones of the █████████.

What this implies, we are unsure of. Although a connection between the two entities have occasionally appeared during our studies, none have been as direct as this. However, further research should be required before we publicly announce this find. It's a major breakthrough in our knowledge of this mysterious entity, but mistakes and miscalculations still could've occured at any point during our tests. I would also like to request a re-run of a prior test on samples of the remnant just for precaution.

I would also like to warn Dr. ████████ of the M.E.G. Research Team of a potential danger that this entity might pose to wanderers. Since high concentrations of ███████ have been found in the ash remnants of these entities, the creation of a clean-up crew to remove all ash remnants from levels should be number one priority. This should also be done as soon as possible to minimize the risk of such remnants causing great psychological harm to wanderers. Besides that, I'd also suggest a public warning to be put out, although I am unsure of how such information could be conveyed without accidentally leaking the results of our study.

Despite how groundbreaking the results may be, we must all remember that it is still confidential information, and sharing it with others will cause harm in one way or another.

Last Wishes

I almost had nothing left, I could've died like that. But no, this place, it can't possibly live with someone dying on their own terms. That would be too good, wouldn't it? Instead it gave me a taste of my own medicine. I didn't want this. I did everything in my power to prevent it from happening. Yet it doesn't care, it won't ever care. Even after everything I had done, it won't care. Because I mean nothing to it, I'm replaceable, someone else could take my place and it wouldn't even notice.

That's how it treats everyone here. Everybody's life is just as meaningless as the next one. I was a fool to not see that. I was a fool to even think I had a chance to escape this torturous hell in the first place.

But that doesn't matter now. Because this place, this monster, it has found a way to hurt me even after I die. It has managed to collect all of my regrets and mistakes, all of my rejections and defeats, all of my worst failures, and it has managed to mold them into a disgusting form. Just when I thought it couldn't possibly take anything more from me. Just when I thought I finally had nothing to lose. Just when my victory was so close, this monster makes me relive all of my worst moments, taunting me and oozing every last bit of dignity out of my life.

At this point, I no longer care about what it gains out of this, I no longer care about why I was chosen to being tortured. I only care about ending this suffering once and for all. This place is hell, and my own memories have become the demons that torment me. I only wish for peace. I only wish for the ability for me to build a time machine and travel back, just so I could've prevented any of this from happening at all.

And to anyone out there who manages to read this, █████████████. You'll thank me later.
