Vulpes lumina, known informally by most wanderers as Frowners, are a variant of the common Fox native to the Backrooms, albeit possessing some differences in appearance and moderate anomalous properties which distinguish them from their more conventional counterparts. Although most wanderers without prior information about the entities find their appearance unnerving, or even mistake the beings for Smilers, they are unlikely to attack; their bioluminescent facial features are merely a ruse by the foxes to mimic the common Smiler, thus intimidating any potential predators out of attacking them.
Although for years after their discovery, Frowners were thought to simply be variants of Smilers, sharing the same biology as the aforementioned beings, recent discoveries by the Entity Research Committee have resulted in a deep understanding of their true nature and biology.
As mentioned before, Vulpes lumina have an appearance reminiscent of the common red fox, although with some differences, including their fur being a dark shade of grey, their eyes and teeth constantly shining a bright light, and them being selectively corporeal similar to Smilers, although to a much lesser extent. Although Frowners will be temporarily able to enter an non-corporeal state for up to an average of ~35 seconds, this is physically taxing on the animals, and they will immediately return to corporeal form without constant focus and physical effort to maintain this state.
Although due to their appearance and preference for residing in dark areas, most will mistake a frowner for their more hostile counterpart, there are various ways to distinguish a frowner from a Smiler, listed below:
- Unlike Smilers, a Frowner's body will not be entirely pitch black, their fur instead being a very dark shade of grey.
- Although they are mildly photosensitive, Frowners are not supernaturally repelled by light.
- When their teeth are borne (which will be most of the time in an encounter with them), a Frowner's face will make an expression vaguely resembling a massive frown, this being their namesake.
Although they do predate on weaker entities and animals (such as Deathmoths and common mice) due to their omnivorous nature, Frowners are relatively timid, mostly preferring to avoid humans. If approached by an entity or human, Frowners will aggressively bare their teeth to mimic a Smiler's face while snarling, in hopes of intimidating their potential attacker. Rarely, they will even begin to charge at the person or entity; however, most charges are usually bluffs, and they will only inflict moderate injuries at worst before retreating.
Furthermore, Frowners show impressive cognitive capability, although not to the same degree as humans. Specimens of Vulpes lumina have been shown to be able to understand complex language and use advanced reasoning, with a recent cognitive study conducted by The Kauer Research Organization concluding that the animals have an average IQ of 75.
Additionally, some people have managed to "tame" a Frowner by consistently feeding it. Although this will usually make the Frowner less aggressive towards humans, this will not ensure that it remain docile, as it is still a non-domesticated animal.
Frowners were initially discovered in 1999, when a B.W.O explorer team in Level 246 encountered what was at the time thought to be a slightly different variant of Smilers, as mentioned before in this article. The team had recovered photos of the entity's bioluminescent face in the dark, and proceeded to upload this information to The Database, classifying it as "Entity 3-A" as a placeholder and making a rudimentary article on the beings which had various unsourced rumors added to it by wanderers using the website over the years, including a hoax involving the existence of a mythical "Level Frown", and a hoax that the beings had a rivalry with Smilers[1].
The previous article for the entities is listed below. Note the informal tone and poor documentation:

Frowners are typically docile entities, that are similar to Smilers. They are recognizable for their signature reflective eyes and gleaming teeth and appear to be between is six to ten feet tall. They are speculated to be amorphous similar to Smilers.

If Frowners are provoked or seen as a threat, they will turn aggressive and exit their docile state. It is unknown whether a Frowner can re-enter their docile state once it exits it, so caution is advised when near them. The Frowners seem innately hostile to Smilers and will exit their docile state upon sensing their presence. Frowners possess a unique ability to convert Smilers into them by gouging out their eyes with their claws. Frowners are also known to have a sense of humor, although this may be exclusive to Level Frown. On rare occasions, Frowners have assisted wanderers to Level Frown. There also have been occasional reports of Frowners befriending wanderers that are perceived to have good moral values.
In 2015, a discovery would by made by the Entity Research Committee about the true nature of the entities, when a mission to study Frowners by the group uncovered the truth that they were in fact anomalous fox-like entities, thus resulting in the revision of their documentation within the Database. Although renaming Frowners and moving the entities' article to a different number was discussed with the administrators of the Database via email, their current slot was allowed to remain for the time being due to most wanderers being familiar with their previous classification.

- ↑ Although Smilers will usually attack Frowners, this behavior is consistent with how they interact with numerous other passive entities, and is thus not considered abnormal behavior for the entities.
