Description[]
Peekers are harmless, anthropomorphic vantablack entities, often paired with Smilers. Peekers have a slender body, and their height ranges from around 3 to 5 feet (1 to 1.5 meters). Peekers' surface has an inky texture, naturally camouflaged in pitch-black areas; yet, their eyes share a composition similar to humans', containing a white sclera and a completely black pupil, which functions to observe in darker regions. Akin to Facelings, Peekers do not own any mouth, eyebrows, or similar structure, and thereby depict no emotion.
Peekers lack any physical structures capable of providing movements. Instead, similar to Needlelimbs, they float in the air erratically and reach at least 8 to 12 mph (~13 to 19 km/h). Due to their delicate bodies, these elevated velocities are an adaptation to avoid physical damage.
Peekers typically live in Level 9.6, exclusively; however, researchers have found instances of this entity roaming in levels accessible from Level 9.6, such as Level 3.6. Nonetheless, they return to the sublevel rapidly and loathe going any further to other levels. Researchers theorize that Peekers may be living in severely pitch-black areas in additional levels, unnoticeable due to their nature. Peekers can be undoubtedly confused with Smilers when inside dim regions, which adds even more to the veracity of this theory. Yet, Peekers are extremely rare in the complex and are undergoing eventual but slow extinction.
Behaviors[]
Hence their name, Peekers are most known for peeking behind walls, doors, or locations with large shadows. When observed, they sporadically run to pitch-black areas, where they can hide due to the matching color; still, they consistently peek at wanderers or other beings, such as Facelings, Smilers, Skin-Stealers (likely leading to death), or any similar humanoids, for unknown motivations. Additionally, Peekers retain the knowledge of the entire layout of every basement in Level 9.6, even considering their non-Euclidean properties. The entity manipulates its high speed to escape from entities or wanderers that pose a potential danger. Peekers don't seem to require any food to survive.
Uninformed wanderers often confuse Peekers for being dangerous because of their appearance, which can lead to unfavorable situations. Nonetheless, these entities have been proven to be frightened of anything. Although Peekers flee from most beings, they have been observed interacting playfully with Felix when no one else is nearby.
Biology[]
Although Peekers have a fragile structure, their slender bodies require minimal energy to support movement and convert it into rapid motion (thus their outstanding velocities). Their body texture is capable of absorbing light and thermal signatures, which makes stealth and camouflaging more doable. Scientists have not been able to study Peekers' anatomy in detail, given their speed, but they speculate that they don't have organs, save for bones to sustain movements. The mechanism by which Peekers survive without vital body parts has yet to be studied.
Their population is extremely scant in their habitat; still, Peekers can survive for decades if undisturbed, even without sexual or asexual reproduction. Furthermore, Peekers can echolocalize in different environments, detecting sounds and the presence of living beings from considerable distances.
Interestingly, this entity has been shown to despise the sounds from "The Trumpets in the Sky" event in Level 9.6, especially considering their exceptional sound acuity. Due to this, Peekers are likely to populate basements, where ambient sounds are virtually lower.
Theories[]
Two theories may explain why Peekers are a significant presence in Level 9.6. The two theories are as follows:
This theory states that Peekers used to have a large society before the discovery of Level 9.6; the disruption of people caused them to go into hiding in the network of basements across the level. Some evidences support this theory, such as signs in an unknown language, rudimentary architecture that is entirely out of place compared to the surroundings, and the knowledge of the basements' layout.
This theory states that the Peekers were former wanderers who transformed into these entities for unknown reasons. There are pieces of evidence that greatly support this theory, such as the signs in an unknown language mentioned previously being written in what appears to be an altered mixture of the Latin and Cyrillic scripts, used in English and Russian, respectively. They have also been observed carrying random objects that wanderers could've held before their subsequent transformation into a Peeker. There have been a few missing wanderers last seen in Level 9.6, as well as missing members from M.E.G. Fog Scouts, Neighboria, and the Fog Survivors.
Discovery[]
Peekers were discovered days after the discovery of Level 9.6 itself in its entirety. The first ever documented encounter with Peekers was an expedition conducted by the Fog Survivors. They explored parts of a basement, including an area shrouded in darkness. One of the three members, named Boris, located something behind a door. The Fog Survivors have named this thing "Выглядывающие Глаза" ("Peeking Eyes"). Eventually, the name was abbreviated, and the entity became known as the Peeker by many.
Recommendations[]
- Peekers are harmless, and likely more scared of a wanderer than they are of them.
- Stay cautious while encountering Peekers, as they can bring Smilers to wanderers while they're trying to evade them, especially in darker areas.
- Don't attempt to pursue a Peeker, as they are likely faster than a casual human, and one can be faced with a nearby entity quickly.
