Entity 54, otherwise known as Crumbs, are common entities found throughout most of the Backrooms. Their discovery dates back to September 2011.

Crumb

Crumbs, also referred to by their scientific name Parvum cinis (meaning "little ash"), are hidden entities, of about one to two centimeters in diameter. They are found within cracks, holes, and corners across most levels of the Backrooms, more specifically, dark or humid levels. Crumbs are entities considered hard to document. Due to their size, and speed, they often go unnoticed by most lifeforms. Crumbs are usually considered counterparts to ants in the Frontrooms, due to their similar appearance and behavior, though, both contain striking differences.

Despite their aggressiveness and various defense mechanisms, Crumbs are generally easy to kill. An accidental step or kick will crush a Crumb to death. Containing an instance is also relatively easy, while being quick, a Crumb can be contained in the same way an ant or a bee can, a large box will imprison it. It is impossible for them to climb, or jump, therefore, exiting the box will be near impossible. Another method of killing a Crumb is by sinking them in water. While splashing them in water will not damage them, they will dissolve into water if surrounded by it.

Crumbs are very well-used around the Backrooms. They can be used as food for Wimpworms, and their body can be used as some sort of poison. Crumb pieces are used as a poisonous seasoning for some foods around the Backrooms, they are also canned as "handheld poison". If one was able to remove the poison of a Crumb's entire body without destroying it, Crumbs could be very appreciated foods, due to how many nutrients can be found within them.

Behavior

Crumb3

Crumbs are much alike to ordinary ants in behavior, most of them are part of or build colonies, with hierarchies, and roles. Workers must go out and search for nourishment, while one queen produces children. While similar, Crumbs have a different organization to that of ants. Workers are divided into army, care, and food-searching, and they all work independently from any other instance of the entity. They will often explore levels alone, ignoring the dangers of the location. The internal structure and location of a colony are also very different. Unlike their Frontrooms counterparts, Crumbs prefer to establish colonies within dark, humid, and/or hidden places, like, for example, inside a couch. Their colonies, unlike ant ones, are more unpredictable, certain spaces receive random roles, without any organization or long-term planning.

Crumbs also differ from ants due to their behavior, Crumbs are more aggressive and super-protective. They attack any non-Crumb lifeform on sight. They will bravely guard a colony until their last breath. Despite working together, Crumbs are not friendly to each other and can fight during everyday tasks. This extends to younglings and even sometimes to the queen. Typically, fights between younglings do not cause issues. In contrast, if a Crumb fights the queen, and successfully defeats her, that Crumb takes on the role of queen, while the former queen will either die from stress and hunger or become a worker.

Biology

As aforementioned, Crumbs are very small, invertebrate entities that take the form of bread crumbs, but the type of crumb may vary depending on region. Some examples of other crumb-esque forms these entities can take are popcorn crumbs, snack crumbs, etc. Due to being small and weak, these creatures have developed a variety of defense measures. For example, it can produce a loud squeak to scare predators and retains a poisonous bite, that can kill a human in mere hours. In addition, Crumbs have small legs, which allow them to run at high speed. Crumbs are described to have adhesive substances that cover their bodies, which they can use for defense, and hiding. Strangely, the entity's body appears to reach full adhesiveness during its death. It is possible that this is caused by stress. In a desire for defense, the entity produces more of this sticky substance, in hopes of surviving.

These entities are considered omnivorous creatures. They will eat anything small enough to fit their mouths. A small rock would and will likely be eaten by a Crumb at some point. These entities do not conventionally drink, instead, they absorb rain or puddle water, which they find anywhere. An instance can last weeks without food or water, as it can store a bit of the nutrients within itself. However, in emergencies, the entity may eat small pieces of itself to survive. If a specimen dies from hunger or dehydration, it will dissolve into a mass of crumbs and the adhesive substance it is covered in. The mixture of both these substances, after some days, will result in a toxic compound. While this compound will not kill, it may cause fairly common diseases, like fever.

Discovery

Crumbs were discovered in Level 386, by an anonymous explorer. Images of the entity were sent to Back-Graph for revision. After weeks of analysis, it was determined that these were newly discovered entities, which the Back-Graph community named "Bread Crumbs", the name would later be simplified to Crumbs. They would be categorized as Entity 54 with the scientific name Parvum cinis.

Do's and Dont's

Do:[]

  • Step on the entity. This will surely kill it.
  • Contain it on a box. It will not be able to escape.
  • Attempt to glue it onto a wall. Crumbs have issues getting themselves out of flat surfaces, principally walls and ceilings. It is likely a Crumb will die before leaving.
  • Sink it in water. A Crumb will dissolve if surrounded by water.

Don't:[]

  • Provoke a colony. This will cause the entire colony to attack one.
  • Splash the entity with water. The entity will be fed and will grow stronger.
  • Look through suspicious cracks, holes and compartments. These areas are often home to Crumbs.
  • Eat suspicious crumbs on the ground. Sometimes, when Crumbs rest, they may be confused with bread crumbs. Eating one will result in poisoning, and likely, death.
