Description[]
Chatterers are helpful entities that are commonly found throughout the entirety of the Backrooms. In appearance, they look exactly like the chatter telephone toy manufactured in the Frontrooms. [1] , although they seem larger by a few inches. Similarly to their Frontrooms counterpart, Chatterers hold 4 blue wheels, which they use to travel throughout levels. Additionally, they all include a white car-like structure, used for attaching other pieces of the entity. Every Chatterer holds a red telephone on top of them, along with a rotary dial.[2]
Slight decorations, such as colored stars, are often found within the entirety of a Chatterer. Furthermore, signs of deterioration can also be noted. These often include small cracks and varying levels of weathering in the paint.
Chatterers will approach a wanderer as soon as they see one. Just as the wanderer notices the presence of a Chatterer, it will start ringing its telephone and rolling its eyes very quickly, most likely suggesting the wanderer to answer the telephone. If the wanderer does answer the telephone, they will feel an intensive urge to follow the Chatterer. Doing so will, surprisingly, lead to the exit of whichever level they are currently within. Wanderers that have rejected the assistance of Chatterers have reported seeing said entity stalking them for a few days, however, no harm had been committed towards them.
Chatterers have been proven to scare off a large variety of dangerous entities, such as Smilers, Slashers, and Stalkers. Furthermore, it has been proven that Chatterers often use this ability to protect wanderers in mortal danger[3] , even going far enough to protect numerous outposts during the Flicker.
While not helping wanderers, Chatterers spend their time collecting bottles of almond water and pushing them individually until they create piles of said object. It is unknown why they do this, but it is widely theorized Chatterers create these groups of Almond Water for wanderers in need of resources. Unfortunately, Chatterers do not seem to differentiate Cashew Water from Almond Water, often creating mixed piles of said objects.
In some rare cases, Chatterers have been confirmed to be able to communicate with wanderers, knowing the basics of a variety of languages. Numerous tests have been done in regards to their ability to talk, however, most Chatterers refused to speak during the interview. Nonetheless, a few communicated with their respective interviewers, revealing many facts about the entity. Throughout these interviews, it has been confirmed that Chatterers seemingly spawn with their ability to talk, as well as with their knowledge of the layout of various Euclidean levels.
Chatterers can be found throughout the majority of the Backrooms, usually within levels of class 3 or higher. Their main nest can be found within level 157. Holes and burrows have been discovered in the deeper areas of the level, carved within the walls and floors. Numerous observations taken by the outposts within level 157 have confirmed that Chatterers are more likely to spawn in these burrows than any other location throughout the Backrooms.
Further inspections and autopsies on Chatterers have proven that they have a brain similar to a human's, including areas that work similar to the cerebrum and the cerebellum. Although further investigation is ongoing, it is widely presumed this brain allows Chatterers to perform certain vital functions, such as thinking. Furthermore, small tubes seem to connect a Chatterer´s brain to its legs. Deeper research has been done, revealing that these tubes hold large quantities of neurons, allowing the Chatterer to control its wheels, therefore being able to move.
Additionally, a Chatterer´s telephone is connected to its brain via a small, helical spring. Unlike the rest of the Chatterer, this spring is extremely mysterious, holding many anomalous properties that somehow make the entity be able to speak.
Discovery[]
The first sighting of a Chatterer was reported during an M.E.G expedition, on March 12, 1920. The expedition group was later found on Level 37.
