A picture of Entity 72 in what is theorized to be Level 28 or the Attic. This is the most popular image of Entity 72.

Entity 72

Entity 72, colloquially known as "Foams", also known by its scientific name espumus acidi is an entity found in the majority of the Backrooms' levels; it is sentient, unlike its Frontrooms counterpart. They can smell, hear, and feel tact, although, they are blind. They have overall great senses and can feel nearby beings. Entity 72 likely originated at aquatic levels, such as Level 205, Level -110, or Level 7.9, although any of these are yet to be confirmed. In the event that these theories are correct, Entity 72 may have fully left its origin level. They began escaping their home levels and quickly spread to all the Backrooms, They evolved differently depending on their habitat, and due to this, more than 13 different types of entity 72 have been cataloged. Anything that comes into physical contact with Entity 72 will begin corroding, similarly to what acid does to objects in the Frontrooms.

Entity 72 is more liquid than the actual foam. They are non-Newtonian and very resistant. Entity 72 also clones itself when cut in half, creating two new instances. Two instances of the entity could merge and create a larger, stronger entity, one that is faster, smarter, and more corrosive. These rare instances of Entity 72 can hijack a wanderer's mind, similar to a parasite. This entity also seems to be able to survive multiple environmental hazards for unknown reasons. Entity 72 is also very agile.

Variations of Entity 72[]

Due to the rapid spread of Entity 72 in the Backrooms, many of the population had to evolve in their new homes. A notable variation is Entity 72.1, the Lava-Foam. This variation went to Level 121, where they evolved to survive the level and became Entity 72.1. The Lava-Foam burns and can transform into a puddle of lava; they are also great swimmers. Other variations of Entity 72 are Cloud-Foam and Tech-Foam, among others.

Cloud-Foams

Entity 72.3, known as Cloud-Foam, is an entity found in cloudy levels and levels above the clouds. They seem to be a mixture of Entity 72 with vapor and clouds. They are more passive than their other counterparts and regularly have a diet more consistent and more vegan-like. Entity 72.3 may be tamed with vegetables or honey.

Tech-Foams

Entity 74.5, known as a Tech-Foam, is a variation of Entity 72. It is found at technological levels. It seems to be a version of Entity 72.3 but made of titanium. It is unsentient and is merely a robot, they are going to attack any moving creature in their camp of vision with lasers. Not much else is known about this entity.

Lava-Foams

Entity 72.2, known as a Lava-Foam, is a variation of Entity 72, which can be found in volcanous levels. They melt and burn objects instead of corroding objects. They are faster and more abundant than other variations of Entity 72. They were first found in Level 121.

Watered-Foams

Entity 72.4, known as the Watered-Foam, is a variation of Entity 72. They rarely occur naturally, for Entity 72.4 to be formed, a specimen of Entity 72, which is currently floating on water must be mixed with the water, by using any tool, even a hand. They can be found rarely at sea levels. More information in "Biology"

Behaviors[]

Entity 72 Another Image ig

Entity 72 is highly aggressive and attempts to digest any non-entity being that is near them. They also enjoy building fortresses to protect their food, water, and mercury, as mercury can kill Entity 72, securing a long life for them. They are interested in expanding in size to the largest they can. Entity 72 is very friendly to other entities and will work together whenever it can. Entity 72 regularly slices itself in half to create more of its species. They cooperate and are not very territorial with each other. It is extremely rare, but some instances of Entity 72, specifically newer ones, seem to be friendlier with humans. Entity 72 also has a love for caffeinated drinks, such as coffee.

Entity 72 normally attacks unknowing wanderers by staying immobile; this makes the prey come closer. Entity 72 attacks by jumping onto its prey's hand and spreading throughout its entire body. Entity 72 does surprise attacks on explorers by jumping on their heads. And rarely will it get in front of the victim's eyes, making them severely confused and turning them into an easy target for Entity 72. Entity 72 can also produce strange, inexplicable sounds to attract wanderers.

The only three known ways to survive Entity 72 are to either pour mercury or put it in a compartment filled with liquid mercury; this will disintegrate Entity 72 and generate a strange acidic substance. Another way to survive Entity 72 is to leave any areas where Entity 72 can be spotted pretending to be regular foam. Entity 72 may also evaporate in extreme temperatures.

Biology[]

Foam Entity 667

Entity 72 resembles a regular cluster of soap foam from the Frontrooms, however, the entity is similar to a non-Newtonian liquid. It acts solid when punched or kicked, but acts foam-like when touched without strength. It lacks facial features. Entity 72 has structures similar to tentacles, which it uses to move around the Backrooms, They are also used to grab items and possible prey. Its tentacles are also used as a quick way to digest food far away without moving or grabbing, as Entity 72's tentacles can also digest food, like the rest of its body.

Entity 72 is acidic but can deactivate said abilities whenever needed. As stated previously, they are non-Newtonian; however, they can choose which state to be in. They can shift their appearance to blend in with their surroundings and resemble a more discernible object while retaining their foamy appearance. They can chant short songs for a period of four to fifty seconds. Entity 72 can float in water, which makes Entity 72 much more vulnerable. When mixed with water, Entity 72 will become Entity 72.4: "Watered-Foams". It looks like a regular body of water, although it is blurry and has several small or medium bubbles spread around. Entity 72.4 is objectively slower than Entity 72 but is as corrosive. Entity 72.4 can be killed by being drained or by being hit by other large, non-infected bodies of water.

According to tests and studies, Entity 72's corrosive properties come from various acidic substances in their body, resulting in a highly corrosive substance present in Entity 72, known as acciyphy espumi. As of 2024, studies have only proven how Entity 72 can feel beings nearby and hear; Entity 72 can detect substances, cells, and other similar subjects most entities, humans, and animals cannot detect; these substances are liberated by unknowing prey, which, when in contact with Entity 72, will make it detect the being. Entity 72 can smell through very small holes in its "tentacles", similar to most creatures. The "noseholes" of Entity 72 cannot be seen by the naked eye due to their size. While unconfirmed, several theories assume that Entity 72 can hear and feel touch. The most accepted theory is that Entity 72's tentacles include most of its sensors, so Entity 72 would hear from small holes in its tentacles, similar to how it smells. The most accepted theory on how Entity 72 feels touch is, that it has substances in its body, that are also present on the skin of humans and animals, these substances act the same as in any corpse, making Entity 72 feel touch.

Diet[]

Entity 72's diet mainly consists of non-entity meat, caffeinated drinks, water, building materials, plants, pills, and, in extreme cases, other Foams. Entity 72 needs to eat every 7–10 minutes, making them eat a large quantity of nourishment. Entity 72 can only go 30 minutes without eating. More than 10 minutes with no food will result in Entity 72 becoming increasingly weak. Entity 72, as mentioned previously, has an addiction to caffeinated drinks; once a specimen drinks caffeine, it will become three times as fast as normal and more corrosive for a few seconds. Entity 72 will only eat construction material during moments of scarcity. Entity 72's favorite and most eaten meals are sheep's meat, according to various tests.

Habitats[]

Entity 72 is present in a majority of levels in the Backrooms, however, it predominantly resides in aquatic levels, as previously mentioned. They are commonly found in attic-like levels; theories assume Entity 72 enjoys the coziness and darkness of attics. Entity 72 is also found in levels with more than one entity or environmental hazards. They are found in bathrooms, humid areas, areas with the presence of soap, or small and/or medium bodies of water. Most commonly, Entity 72 is found during the daytime and can be rarely found at night. Most reports of encounters with Entity 72 are at unknown levels and are very inconsistent. Due to this, it is hard to confirm which levels Entity 72 is in and which levels it is not in.

Discovery[]

On September 13th, 1992, at 8 p.m., 3 M.E.G. explorers were exploring Level 118 when they found a foam-like substance.  One of the explorers tried picking the foam with his hand, but his hand disintegrated on contact; he was screaming in pain, and the other two explorers were traumatized. They realized that it wasn't foam; it began moving; the two explorers ran away; and the third was left to be eaten. After this incident, the entity was cataloged as Entity 72, and the entire group began searching for entities, and more and more specimens and possible habitats were discovered. The M.E.G. explored hundreds of levels attempting to find more of this entity; 13 specimens were found, and the entity was officially classified as real. Research on Entity 72 proceeded and advanced rapidly. More specimens of Entity 72 were found at these levels.

Containment Methods[]

Ever since their discovery, Entity 72 has always been at ongoing risk of being outsmarted and trapped, as many groups, such as the M.E.G., B.W.O., and Backroom Colonists, have attempted to create methods to contain them and interact with them without being injured in the process. This led to many scientists creating anti-acidic devices. Some of the most noticeable items were the Foam Glove, used to grab Entity 72 without corroding; the "Box",  used to contain Entity 72 within spaces; the 72Barrier, a device used to contain Entity 72 within cells; and the Foam Container Bottle. The wish to contain Entity 72 became larger and larger as the years passed. Eventually, one event would make all groups rapidly and desperately attempt to capture Entity 72; this event is known as Incident 06-12-2011, nicknamed "The Foam Infestation".

Unfortunately, the projects were later canceled three months after the infestation due to the loss of 30% of the scientists and devices. This caused fewer groups to be interested; currently, only the M.E.G. is attempting to contain Entity 72.

The Foam Glove[]

The Foam Glove was a device created by the B.W.O. in 2003 with the intent of providing its user with the ability to hold Entity 72 without suffering any injuries. The Foam Glove was made with ethylene tetrafluoroethylene and strongly held to its user's hand, only being removed when gently grabbing it. It was destroyed during Incident 06-12-2011 when the roof fell on it. The Foam Glove was never found; a hole was found in its location, making many assume Entity 72 stole all of them.

The "Box"[]

The Box was a compartment device projected by the B.I.F. in 2008. It was used to contain Entity 72 to stop its destructive nature. The item, in total, was the most used containment method. The Box, however, never left its prototype stage and never will. The project got canceled. There are currently only 3 Boxes around unknown locations in the Backrooms.

72Barrier[]

The 72Barrier was a highly technological device created by the M.E.G. to imprison Entity 72 in large-scale rooms without any possible escape attempt. A grave mistake the 72Barrier had, however, was that it could be destroyed from the outside of the cell. This resulted in many Foams liberating other Foams during the attacks. The 72Barrier project was never discontinued; however, no news has been released since 2012.

Foam Container Bottle

Foam Container Bottle (F.C.B.)[]

The Foam Container Bottle is a small container composed of polyvinyl chloride created by the M.E.G. It is used to contain Entity 72 in a small bottle for experiments, studies, and tests.

Its main objective was to be a tiny compartment for future experiments. The F.C.B. was created by M.E.G. scientist Jason Moris Butcher in March 2011. It is still used as of 2024 in most experiments and tests relating to Entity 72. The F.C.B. is regularly used as a recipient to test Entity 72.4, or Entity 72.3.

Welcome, Gary!
Incident 06-12-2011, also known as the Foam Infestation, was an infestation of Entity 72 specimens in Level 11 and Level -599; the B.I.F.'s headquarters and the Backroom Colonists' capital. It happened on the twelfth of June of 2011, at 3:54 pm, when mysteriously and suddenly, a group of 113 specimens of Entity 72 infested Level -599, and another group of 203 specimens attacked the B.I.F.'s headquarters. Entity 72 was slowly spreading through ventilation tubes, entering drinks, to enter human bodies, hiding in bathrooms as regular foam, and splashing into walls. The infestations resulted in 1644 injuries and 255 deaths, the two locations were almost fully destroyed, and as of 2024, 97% of the destroyed areas have been reconstructed.

Reports[]

Several reports of Entity 72 have been posted in several forums on the Internet, these reports are increasingly inconsistent, and it is difficult to, discover which are real and which are false, below are three unconfirmed reports of Entity 72.

"It still hurts to this day, the burn, almost like it's still in my shoulder."
"It... simply... Melted? And appeared behind me!"
"I saw it go through a portal. I promise it entered my outpost through a portal! I'm not crazy!"

Do's and Don'ts:[]

Do:[]

  1. Pour any available mercury or put Entity 72 into a compartment with liquid mercury.
  2. Avoid physical contact with Entity 72.
  3. Leave as fast as possible; Entity 72 is very fast.
  4. Mix with water; Entity 72 becomes weaker when mixed, besides, Entity 72.4 can be killed by simply putting it in a sink; which causes Entity 72.4 to slowly turn mainly into water, instead of the actual entity.
  5. Avoid staring at the entity for prolonged periods of time; this may make the entity feel threatened and attack.
  6. Expose Entity 72 to very high or very low temperatures.
  7. Feed it strawberry-flavored Almond Water or macadamia nuts, this will calm down Entity 72.

Don't:[]

  1. Touch Entity 72.
  2. Approach it.
  3. Put a non-Watered-variant into a body of water; this will only make Entity 72 enlarge and gain strength.
  4. Make two specimens of Entity 72 spot each other; this will cause them to mix into a new and larger Entity 72.14.
  5. Look straight into it for 10 minutes; this may cause the entity to feel threatened if it has not attacked yet.
  6. Feed it; it will make Entity 72 grow larger and stronger.
  7. Slice it in half; this will create two new separate specimens.
  8. Blow the entity with air. This will push them far away temporarily, but Entity 72 will become angered.
