Description[]
Entity 88, otherwise known as Amalgamations, typically resemble some combination of several other entities, wanderers, and/or raw materials. Their appearance can vary heavily, as each one has collected or absorbed different items or beings. They can be assortments of almost anything or anyone found in the Backrooms. Faces and limbs of various entities can be seen protruding from Amalgamates' bodies, including but not limited to Skin-Stealers, Deathmoths, Wretches, and Hounds. Amalgamations do not appear to be able to absorb Windows, Mirrors, Lighters, Smilers or Counter Entities.
Amalgamations are almost always limited to consuming the entities found on the level in which they reside. For example, if Skin-Stealers are not native to a level, they will not appear on the bodies of Amalgamations in the level either. Wanderers are, of course, an exception to this rule, as they commonly travel between levels.
Due to the unique properties of Entity 88 (see Biology), it is currently unknown what the creature looks like beneath the entities it consumes. However, the unique substance created by the entity appears to be a translucent greenish-yellow.
The size of Amalgamations can vary depending on the level they reside in. In levels with tight spaces like The Main Nine, Amalgamations are, on average, smaller. In more open levels, like Level 9, for example, Amalgamations tend to be as large as they can afford to be without limiting their mobility. Some reports state that on larger levels, they can become up to seven meters in diameter.
Properties[]
Amalgamations can usually be heard from long distances due to the pained screams constantly emitted from the entities they are absorbing, along with the sounds of various parts scraping along the walls, floor, and ceiling. In louder levels, however, they can be extremely dangerous as they move quickly once prey is spotted.
Behaviors[]
Amalgamations do not appear to be intelligent creatures, and have made no attempt to contact humans besides trying to consume them; they will quickly lose interest once prey is no longer in their field of vision. However, they appear to deliberately limit the amount of food they consume to certain levels to stay mobile.
Once Entity 88 has made physical contact with a victim, it will be pulled into the clump and become part of the entity. In a process that takes about a month, the victim will slowly be pulled to the center of the Amalgamation until they are completely digested. If the Amalgamate's victim is a Wanderer, they will slowly turn into a Wretch during this process as well.
Hunting[]
Amalgamations will typically wander around levels, searching for victims. They usually lumber slowly using the limbs of the entities they've absorbed until they have located a target, then begin to chase the victim. Amalgamations can move surprisingly fast, considering their appearance of a non-unified clump of entities - they have been recorded at speeds up to 75 miles per hour while on the hunt. When not hunting, they move at about 25 miles per hour.
In some cases, Amalgamationss have been known to retract the limbs from the entities they are absorbing and turn into a large ball shape to move more quickly. If this happens, try to turn as many corners as possible to prevent the entity from building up speed while chasing you.
Amalgamations do not live in packs; they travel by themselves. Some theorize this is because two Amalgamations making contact would fuse them.
Hibernation[]
After the entity has trapped a victim, it will enter hibernation, during which it will not move or attack unless provoked. It will stay in hibernation for around 2-3 weeks before hunting again. The entities also enter hibernation at the same time as the Amalgamation itself. It is believed that the substance that glues the entities together also transmits signals telling them what to do. This cycle prevents Amalgamations from becoming too large to move through certain levels, namely levels with tight hallways like some in The Main Nine.
Amalgamations have been known to attack those who try to free any entities attached to it while it is hibernating. However, it is limited to using the limbs of those same entities to attack.
Biology[]
Entity 88 absorbs living creatures and materials by utilizing the unique substance emitted from its own body. This translucent greenish-yellow substance spreads quickly through the body of any victim once the Amalgamate has made contact with it- not only trapping the victim but also making any attempt to free them nearly impossible, as the victim is now just as sticky as the Amalgamate itself.
There is a way to counteract this, however. In one case, an explorer managed to use Almond Water to damage the entity. Upon contact with the liquid, its prey began detaching from its body. It quickly fled the scene. Further research is needed to see whether this method can be used to fully defeat Amalgamations.
No Wanderer has ever been successfully freed from an Amalgamation. In the rare cases where the Wanderer's body has been detached, they are fully paralyzed and die mere minutes after their separation from the entity.
Testing of this substance has revealed that it causes severe numbness, even in low doses, but that the Amalgamation cannot control those who touch the substance unless they are directly in contact with the entity.
Discovery[]
The first documented Amalgamation sighting happened in August of 2016, when the MEG became aware of reports from a Wanderer who said they saw "a bizarre Amalgamation of entities, similar to a Clump" in Level 9. The Wanderer's initial description of the entity ended up becoming its nickname. Amalgamations remained unconfirmed for several years until reports of them became more common and MEG was able to secure video evidence. It is unclear whether the population of Amalgamations increased after the initial sighting or they simply migrated to more levels inhabited by Wanderers.
