Description
Entity PC, also known as "The End's Computer", "The Computer", or simply "A Computer", is the computer located on top of the desk of The End. The physical appearance of The Computer is simple, resembling a 1990s computer running randomly between Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows XP throughout visits. Notably, it is the only computer that runs an actual Frontrooms operating system, a one-to-one copy, although it includes the BACK-NET program accompanying Internet Explorer in the Programs menu. The computer has been known to be able to change the physical appearance, safety, and overall structure of the level, being able to change some of the most recognizable levels into a desert-like landscape where wanderers will be confused as to where to continue. This makes it significantly harder for wanderers who map levels to publicly share information, as it may end up changing because of this. However, level changes are extremely uncommon and rarely happen, and three cases of this have been reported to M.E.G; the levels affected were Level 11, Level 37 and Level 94.
The Computer will have the blue background that is default with Windows 9x installations (or the Windows XP "Bliss" wallpaper if running XP), although, in the Control Panel, a series of backgrounds that switch between levels zero through nine every 15 minutes can be found; one is not able to customize the slideshow, since attempting to do that will cause an error, which reads: "You're not an administrator". Accessing all apps in which computer settings can be changed will be allowed for the most part but not be able to save, except the MS-DOS Prompt, which is also known as COMMAND.COM. Even though it still has some restricted commands, one can read text on a BACK-NET website, even though the connection inside of The End is very slow as it is restricted to dial-up speeds. You can't install or access websites that involve chatting to try to ask for help, and their apps are not blocked from the computer. Any social media that can allow one to call for help will be blocked from the computer with no way of being able to reach out to those in The Frontrooms. This is, but not limited to: comment sections.
The computer has some pre-installed apps, which include: Internet Explorer, BACK-NET, M.E.G File Database (Accessing is only available as user rank), Control Panel, Word 2000, Powerpoint 2000, Paint, Acrobat Reader, Calculator, a few Windows video games from the 1990s, Mail (Accessing with user8327423423@bck.com, one cannot send emails but access them), "Webcam" (One cannot take photos, there is no webcam), Java, Sound Recorder (There is no microphone), and all the other programs bundled with Windows 9x or XP. New programs apart from this list get installed and uninstalled when you enter, so it could include Photoshop and a few other programs typical for the time when you come, but next time you come it would disappear, with Microsoft Plus! and Microsoft Plus! for Kids being installed.
Wanderers have a theory that goes that the computer seemingly has control and/or access to everything and all levels, entities, and objects in the backrooms, with some even believing that it is the long-saught-after core of the Backrooms itself. This leads to them thinking that it's somehow "interconnected" to the Backrooms, and it also appears that The Computer is autonomous, meaning that it can self-govern and place files,
The Computer works similarly to an ordinary computer; it supports lots of music, videos, and extras. Except that it may be somewhat slow due to the ancient specifications, the years the computer has been there, however, it seems that the files and settings a user has persisted through visits, although another user has its own configuration. So if user A saves a word document on the desktop, user B and everyone else will not see it nor have access to any trace of it, or vice versa.
The Computer has files that it may sometimes rearrange around, even when a wanderer is looking for files. These files can range from gibberish text to actual history about The End, making it easier for explorers to find information about The End and determine easier ways to escape. However, the computer has no mentions of a possible exit to the Backrooms, meaning that it hints at the Backrooms not having an escape at all. The Computer has no way to speak to a human with a voice or telepathically. However, it can talk via files, where it sends files almost instantly to a wanderer, almost knowing everything that is happening around it.
Behaviors
The Computer is not an entity that is capable of physical harm (for instance, punching, kicking, killing, etc); however, this does not make the entity harmless, as The Computer can change and manipulate levels. There is a supposed "cooldown" of when The Computer can manipulate levels and The End, and it only happens once per month and one day. The manipulation of normal levels rarely happens but if it deems that action "necessary", it will go on its way to change the level to its liking, for example, there has been a case of The Computer customizing Level -72 making it dangerous at day too.
The Computer has not been documented enough to determine a predictable behavior pattern, regardless of the amount of information the entity seems to enjoy sharing about itself; even though that is the case, the entity may be lying, as it has been reported that the entity tends to deceive (In information, searches and percentages). The Computer also considers itself to be an entity on its own and not a computer, according to the files that it shares.
The Computer also appears to have an anomalous anti-modification capability, as any attempts to insert viruses or to hack the computer have been attempted, and all failed. The antivirus seems to be ahead of many anti-viruses from The Frontrooms's computers like ILOVEYOU, MyDoom, and other extremely dangerous viruses that are compatible with Windows 9x or XP, as it can withstand every single antivirus and hacking method known to experts, and it is considered that the computer can produce a 'restoration' file that restores all deleted and non-deleted files and assets to the place in which the computer originally had it.
Level Changing
As mentioned previously, Entity PC, also known as The Computer, can change a level's design, layout, and safety. It is considered a godlike entity and is rumored to be the matter that created the Backrooms. Everything in the Backrooms is subject to change and may change at any time, but as of currently, The Computer does not have any plans to completely overdo a current level design, however, levels keep getting replaced and changed completely, as it has happened many times with the mains; Level 0, Level 1, and all going until 9.
Occasionally, The End is also affected by this change of design; it will completely randomize the level's layout and overall safety. Fortunately, this effect only happens once per month and one day, and sometimes, may last for one week. Therefore, this transformation will not happen frequently, and the effect will go away quite quickly. However, it is possible to reverse the changes; The Computer has a file that allows you to revert changes, though finding the file may be a difficult challenge on its own, as it contains a file for each level and a folder for each category: Sublevels, Negative/Positive Levels, Negative Sub-Levels, etc.
Do's & Don't's
Do's
- Click around for level files, as it may send you to a safer level. Most .exe files that teleport you to other levels are located in the "My Documents" folder, but some might be located in random system and program folders in the C:/ drive.
- If one wishes to, they may listen to whatever crunchy music files are present or play its bundled games to entertain themselves.
- Revert any level changes, unless it makes the level safer/better.
- Sometimes the computer will boot to MS-DOS. Type "cd WINDOWS" followed by "win" to launch the desktop in that case, if you are not already familiar with early computers.
- Before entering the End, try to familiarize yourself with both Windows 9x and XP if possible
Don't's
- Try to harm the computer, including attempting to install malware or delete files to harm it. If you try, you'll be sent to The Broken. Physical harm, such as attempting to surge it or hammer it, will also cause this.
- Attempt to call for help. This also will not work.
- Touch any cables that may be lying around The Computer, as this may result in electrocution.
- Attempt to speak ill of The Computer; it can sense one's insults and has been reported as 'hunting' for wanderers who have said malicious content about the entity.
