“Infiltrate. Manipulate. Sabotage.”

I.R.I.S. Motto

»I-INTRO«

The Insurgent Rogueware and Infiltration Syndicate, or more simply reffered to as I.R.I.S. is a group within The Backrooms that was founded in late-2017. I.R.I.S. presents itself as a highly secretive malicious hacking unit, dedicated to deploying malware and hacking software to obtain valuable information and resources.

I.R.I.S. currently has a population of approximately 350 members, a number that continues to grow over time. The majority of its personnel reside within Base Pupil, the group’s main base, which houses over half of their members. If one wishes to become a member of I.R.I.S., they must undergo a rigorous evaluation process, assessing their skills in technology and cyberspace. Despite their seemingly malicious exterior, members of the group remain neutral and show no hostility towards outside wanderers. However, they will attack anyone deemed to be threatening.

Members of I.R.I.S. carry encrypted ID tokens embedded into their clothing, which are key to identifying if they are a member or not. All Initiates who join the group undergo this process and are added to a secured database of authorized personnel.

Followed by an attempted breach in 2019, I.R.I.S.'s bases are heavily protected by advanced defense systems including automated security, surveillance drones, and biometric scanners. In the event of a breach, a base-wide lockdown is triggered, whilst activating electrified floors in restricted areas and turrets with thermal imaging to neutralize intruders.

While I.R.I.S. is a hacking group, their operations aren't carried out for activism purposes, or expressly malicious intentions. Small-scale operations, meaning ones with the simple goal of retrieving information are handled with care. Accidental infection of civilian terminals by I.R.I.S. is soon remotely mitigated. Though they seem sinister, I.R.I.S. does not intend to cause widespread collateral harm to innocent wanderers terminals.

»II-TECH«

Alongside being a hacking group, I.R.I.S. is also known for developing multiple advanced and remarkable technologies over the years. A few of these advancements are described below.

Mal

Mal is the name given to an interconnected camera surveillance system developed by I.R.I.S. to ensure base security and monitor activity. It detects whether beings in its range are human, and if so, confirms if they are a member of I.R.I.S. Mal detects this by scanning for ID tokens and analyzing the unique retinal and facial patterns for each individual.

Thermal-Imaging Surveillance Drones

Thermal-Imaging Surveillance Drones were developed by I.R.I.S. to enhance base security. These drones come in the shape of a disk with a sphere in the middle, similar to a flying saucer. Their motors allow for quiet surveillance in their base. They patrol designated areas, using thermal imaging to scan humans passing under its range.

Turret Defense System

The Turret Defense System consists of compact, automated turrets with motion and thermal sensors for reliable targeting. These turrets are mounted on swiveling bases or ceilings, allowing for flexible placement and 360-degree coverage. They serve as an efficient defense mechanism, focusing on key areas to ward off potential intruders.

»III-HIERARCHY«

At the top of the hierarchy lies The Eye, the title given to the founder of I.R.I.S. They are in charge of overseeing all tasks and missions that go on within the group.

The rest of the hierarchy is as follows:

◇ Lead Strategist-Right hand assistants of The Eye, plans larger scale operations. Supervises and assists Cell Coordinators.

◇ Cell Coordinator-Supervises squads of Technical Programmers and Data Manipulators, planning smaller, more routine operations.

◇ Data Manipulator-Extracts the data from targeted systems during missions. Usually work in a team alongside Technical Programmers.

◇ Technical Programmers-Handles a majority of tasks involving developing new malware or other technologies.

◇ Mechanical Engineer-Provide crucial support in fixing and maintaining technological systems within the base.

◇ Supplier-Manage food and water supplies for members of I.R.I.S.

◇ Recruits-Basic members of I.R.I.S, assists with tasks and missions, as well as working on given assignments.

◇ Initiates-Candidates undergoing evaluation.

»IV-OUTPOSTS«
Base Pupil

'Base Pupil is the official headquarters of I.R.I.S., and serves as their base of operations and missions. It is located within Level 4.3, and the architecture consists mostly of a complex of rooms and corridors. Though there are multiple different room types, they all have one thing in common, which is a general bright red/crimson color scheme.

Public areas include:

◇ Living quarters for members to rest.

◇ Small lounges for relaxation during breaks.

◇ Dining areas where I.R.I.S. members are provided with food and drinks.

In addition, several restricted rooms require biometric scanning for access. These include storage rooms for acquired supplies, aswell as office-like spaces with cubicles, where members use the computers during operations.

»V-SUPPLYING«

With Base Pupil located in Level 4.3, I.R.I.S. has access to abundant naturally regenerating resources such as food and water. Small scout teams are sent from the base to gather these supplies and transport them to designated storage rooms.

However, while this method works, relying solely on it presents challenges, as the group must not only concentrate these resources into their base, but also scavenge enough to sustain all 350 members.

It is also believed that I.R.I.S. occasionally works with third-party groups, either during conflicts or times of general need. These partnerships are typically symbiotic, with I.R.I.S. completing missions in exchange for a substantial supply of resources.

»VI-HISTORY«

I.R.I.S. was founded in late 2017 by an anonymous wanderer with the vision of establishing a dominant technological and cyberspatial presence within The Backrooms. Shortly after its founding, the group established Base Pupil, which quickly attracted 40–50 members in its initial stages.

I.R.I.S. started to become known in June 2018, following a series of successful low profile attacks to obtain important information. In mid 2019, I.R.I.S. began to expand the scale of their operations and technological capabilities.

On August 4th, 2019, Base Pupil experienced an attempted breach after an unknown group of intruders had managed to sneak past the lower level security measures that were present at the time. The attack however was quickly contained, and has resulted in I.R.I.S. drastically increasing their level of security in both of their bases to make sure that something like this would never happen again.

My name is [CLASSIFIED], one of the Lead Strategists at I.R.I.S. I often see people think of us as a group of soulless, evil villanous individuals that enjoy deploying malware for the sake of chaos and to cause suffering. The simple truth is, that's not the case. We are not like those unhuman fools.

While our methods might seem ruthless and sinister, we operate them with a reason. Our actions at I.R.I.S are very... complicated to say the very least. The Backrooms is a harsh, hellish place. It's full of danger and unpredictability, and you never know what comes next. The environment around us is changing, and we have to adapt.

We are not soulless individuals with a complete lack of morality. While morale at I.R.I.S is grey, we have a boundary between offense for the sake of survival, and causing outright suffering to innocent wanderers. We aren't evil villains, but a community of people that are trapped in an endless realm that leave us no choice but to do the actions that we do to sustain ourselves. After all,

You have to do what you can to survive...

WRITING GUIDE FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO MAKE PAGES ABOUT IRIS.

-IRIS isn't an outwardly evil group. They don't intend to cause widespread harm and chaos to innocent wanderers terminals, and if they do, they attempt to mitigate it. There is a line between doing an offense for survival and causing outright chaos and suffering.

-IRIS doesn't have extremely complex malware and futuristic technology. Though they are a more advanced group, it still has to be in the general realm of realism.

-Pages portraying IRIS should align with its established lore. Avoid straying too far away from it, as it could create confusion.

-Not every member at IRIS is a genius hacker. While that is a general majority, some members are more skilled in other backgrounds, like strategy and engineering.
