An artist's recreation of Area 2, an actual photo hasn't been taken.
Description
Level.exe is one of the most dangerous levels of the backrooms, serving many threats not only in psychical way. This level is infested with illusions and lies, making wanderers stay here for longer. You aren't even in your body in the first place, your visualized Soul is suffering everything...
At first, this level seems innocent. In area 1, there is nothing really special, just a center of a library with few meter tall bookshelves made out of white material resembling wood, white floor with a blue circle in the center, bright light coming out of nowhere and an screen above the center showing random backrooms levels with a calm female voice telling you: "Welcome to the backrooms file database! To edit something, select a book and modify it's content.". Of course it's a lie, because the changes won't apply to real backrooms. This area is called "The center", and is the safest so far. To quit it, just simly walk into the one of the "book corridors."
Area 2, the beginning, doesn't give any suspections too. It is meant to make you think the lies the voice told you are real. The books are always the same thickness and on it's coves you can find the name of the Level/Entity/Object you can "modify" in this book, with the cover also containing the photo of the content to "modify" in it. The level books have few pages, each does something other. You can modify the entity count, lighting, level structure and size and many other things. You can also add pages, but that won't change the thinckness of the book. The entity books are very similair, but you can modify their hostility, powers etc. each book has a pen attached to it, which is used to change the things in the books. sometimes, you can find ladders. They are used to access higher shelves. After suprassing 1 mile, you will end up in area 3.
In area 3, things start to go wonky. Lights start to go darker, books look older and the wood-like material is rotten. Everything looks dirty and unkempt compared to area 1 and 2. Additionaly, there are way much less books, with the pen being broken and somtimes clipping trough your soul hands. You can have slight hallucinations and whispers in this area, which decrease your sanity drastically. Did I mention you cannot go back in areas? This area is longer than the second one, being 5 miles long. You can find a place where the corridors meet, that means you've got to area 4.
Area 4, the execution, is the first stage to have entities in it. These are Smilers, Glitchers and bloodwalkers, rarely Insanities. This stage is a replica of area 3 but with blood in books, more hallucinations, glitching out pens and other random furniture like chairs, tables etc. which can teleport you to The void of this level by touching them. The only non-glitching out things are beds which can be rarely found. They are one of the exits from this level, so if you ever find yourself here, lay in the bed immediately and cover your entire body with quilt, it increases your sanity and makes you invisible to entities, it also helps you fall asleep. The light in this level is darker than in area 3 and everything is more dirty, mainly the blood is making everything untidy. Wires on the floor can also be found. Due to your soul body and the sanity-decreasing purposes, the pen in the books is completely clipping trough you. After suprassing 10 miles, you will end up in area 5.
Area 5, the switchboard can have many subareas inside it. It's just a replica of area 4 but divided into biomes.
If you passed from 3 up to 5 few-mile biomes, you will to area 6.
Area 6, also known as torture for sanity is the last stage before the glitched ones. The lights are almost completely out, pens and book glitch out to the point where they float, blood is almost everywhere and touching the wires will kill you almost instantly due to heart attack happening because of electricity tension which was also active in area 4, but less intensified. Entities from the whole backrooms resider this area, and your sanity will be in torture in here, as the name of the area suggests. You can also have a hallucinations of dead bodies of your friends, loved ones and so on. Beds are almost impossible to find, but if you find one, they function the same as in area 4, so you know what to do. The bookshelves are painted black, with the floor being made out of dirty and dusty concrete. There is no furniture in this area, since it is meant to maximally decrease your sanity. The examples of entites that you can find here are: R U N W H I L E Y O U C A N, Insanities, Skin-Stealers, entities exclusive to this level, Death Moths, Dead Hands, Morphers, red eyed Lurkers and many people suspect the occurence of The Corrupted Ones. A disturbing music can be heard while wandering trough this level.
The areas described above are the only fully confirmed areas of Level.exe, which many wanderers proved the existence of. Mostly of the people who suffered these 6 areas decided to sleep in the bed and are now living to tell the story... Altrough the beds are not only of the mostly difficult to use exits from Level.exe, but they are the easiest, that's why we have so much information on this level's page.
Unconfirmed Description
Area 7, the major error can be accesed after letting your sanity drop to 1% in area 6. The library's roof, walls other corridors will dissapear and they will be replaced with the view to the void of this level. Everything, even your clothling will start to glitch out, with lots of random liquids (including lava) will appear on the floor. The lava will start making holes in the ground, which you don't want to fall into. The books have random letters in them, and the sky will be infested with an entity called "THIS IS YOUR END", which will emit a very loud noise of glitchy emergency alarms. The entity will also send other entities at you, so we are hoping that you have high stamina, or else you are done. There are No beds in this level, so the only exits left are noclipping and getting rescued, and these exits are just a pure luck. Additionaly, the bookshelves itself will start to glitch out, which isn't a good sing. We hope that this area doesn't exist, but who can expect what demonic ideas The Redacted Watcher can have... To exit this area, survive it for 15 minutes.
The void of Level.exe, and yes, it functions as The Void.
Area 8, there's no chance is very similair to area 7, but with few major differences. The sky/void turns red, the entity "THIS IS YOUR END" gets few times louder, throws many more entities and have the ability to drain your sanity, and everything is majorly glitching out. Even some parts of your body can now not work functionally. The entities have their corrupted version, means they are few times stronger, with the oxygen being gas version of Liquid Pain, making you feel intense pain even just to breath. The area itself is similair to Level !, just running from the entities "THIS IS YOUR END" throw at you. Almost everything here is covered in blood, which is very hot and can melt your skin. The suspected thing is that the blood here is like lava, it can melt almost everything. A wanderer, which was about to suffer until the end of the Backrooms told us that after running for 666 seconds, the corridor will end and the entities instead of killing you, will throw you into the void. We hope that these horrible 2 unconfirmed areas doesn't exist. Also, the wanderer mentioned could basically make joke out of us, since it was done on an roleplay chat in BackWeb in BackOS.
Thats all we know, and as we mentioned earlier, do not take the last 2 stages seriously, as they are not confirmed by proper sources.
Entities
Here is the list of Level-exclusive entites.
The bloodwalkers
A small, humanoid entities who can hide in blood just by melting youself in it. When they see a wanderer, the rise and take him to the blood, which turns his into bloodwalker. This entity can also move only in blood, but due to their elastic hands they can grab people from very far away. They can also splay blood if they want to go somehere. The only changes in their body is that they lack facial properties, they are smaller, completely red and have no legs.
The glitchers
They look like human heads with the typical glitch texture with deformed facial properties, for ex. they don't have eyeballs. The heads are also completely bald with unknown gender. If you try touching them, your sanity will be drained inatantly, leaving you to suicide due to lack of mental health. They also have another form of attacking, which is glitching out you or areas nearby you or pushing you to bloodwalkers. They are mostly seen in area 4.
Binaries
They are a stream of green, lighting numbers 0-1 which is rising from the floor approx. 1 meter upwards. After that 1 meter, the numbers basically dissapear to make a place for another one. The numbers also seem to whisper some parts of code to you... If you put something in the stream of the numbers, it basically blocks it. They appear when a number from the bookshelf in binary fields is placed on the floor. The light that these entities emit has a low range but is bright enough to light up the binary fields.
Viruses
Red exclamation marks, which appears near the wanderers out of nowhere. Many people suspect that these entities were a glitch that came because of that many lethal things taking appearance in this level. They cannot move, just teleport to increase the chances of being touched. The exclaimation marks come in 2d form, so do not be fooled. When one touched this entity, the exclaimation mark will dissapear due to entering the target's body. While controlling wanderer, they lead him to death and suicide with his body. The wanderer while being controlled can use his senses but cannot move. They mostly appear in area 8 and the viruslands.
THIS IS YOUR END
The entity of unconfirmed areas 7 and 8, is very powerful. They look like pixel-styled happy emojis with red eyes and blue colour replacing the yellow one. They do loud sounds of glitched emergency alarm, making your sanity drop much faster than in the confirmed areas. It can open it's mouth to throw entities at you and drain sanity in area 8. When a wanderer tried to throw something at them, it didn't damage the entity; instead, the object noclipped trough the entity. This entity has also other powers like flying, glitching certain things, spawning liquids in area 7 and 8 and making massive hallucinations. It is located in the sky of areas 7-8, with its corrupted version on area 8.
Corrupted version of entities
This is also an unconfirmed manifestation of every entity of the backrooms that enters area 8. The corrupted entities have many visual changes, as well as having more power, which is meant to murder the wanderer. These changes include: glitchy and covered in blood body parts, eyes (if have) turning red, and with the power increases, the entity was faster, could kill the wanderer faster, had sanity-draining abilities and was very noclippable. The entity in that form also boosted the feeling of fear in the wanderer, making him reach the end of area 8 faster. The corrupted version of entities could have appear out of nowehere, and this is probably because of the amount of glitching in this level. Rarely, corrupted entities have inverted colors.
The corrupted version of entity "THIS IS YOUR END" acts differently than a normal corrupted entity. No matter what, the blue color will be replaced with black, the smile becoming red and making much louder sounds. The entity also spawns more often and have sanity-draining abilities. Not to mention, they spawn many more entities by now and have better strategies to make you reach the end of the book corridor faster. They cannot have inverted colors.
Entrances and Exits
Entrances
- They are the biggest problem. You can enter this level, but it is unknown how to do that. Means you can enter this level without even knowing about it, you just did your daily things you do in the backrooms and poof, you are in this hellhole. If you are an armed MEG. agent or soldier, this level shouldn't be a problem if areas 7 and 8 doesn't exist. The problem is if you are a random wanderer which is new to the backrooms and you noclip to this level. Well, good luck then.
Exits
- Sleeping in a bed takes you to Level 777.
- When someone is breaking a wall/floor in typical maze-based levels, there is a low chance that a hole will appear in the floor of stages 1-4. Of course they don't last forever, and dissapear after 1 day. If you jump into them, they either lead to Level ! or Level Anime (Joke).
- If you find a pill in the naturelands, taking it will teleport you to Level 8.
- Breaking the screen in area 1 will take you to Level Absolute Infinity of Unknown. This exit may seen easy, but you will not have anything to throw and you will be hypnotized by the voice.
Explorations
Well... there is not so much to say here, ID-9298983 just dissapeared while in a mission in Level 8. The other explorers were unable to find him and reported him getting lost. In one of 9298983's logs which he given after he survived we found a clear description of area 1:
Wait? Where am I? Did I just noclip to another level? Well, it looks like it. Someone from speakers just told me that I can modify backrooms stuff in here? Wow, so tricky... did they just tough they can trick a well-trained M.E.G. agent? What a shame! After I walk into one of these bookshelf corridors, a whole lot of entites gotta run and me and kill me! Let me just check the wiki entry of this level.
I got myself in trouble, BackOS seem to not recognize this level, so I cannot just read the exits... Am I doomed forever? Is this another part of Level REDACTED?! Well, self-pity wont do anything, I will just better start writing the documentation and finding an exit.
The stage, area, row 1... Whatever you want to call it, looks like a center of a library, with the speakers telling you lies about this being a "BaCkRoOmS FiLe DaTaBaSe" and you can modify entities and levels in here, a screen showing you backrooms levels and thats it! I will not be suprised if they make this level class 5... Also, from where is the lighting coming from?
The wanderer tough that the first mile was also area 1, but eventually we decided to seperate them.
Documentation of area 2
We've found the log where ID-9298983 was in area 2, which was called by him the other part of area 1.
The other part of the manipulation... They really want to kill many innocent souls, they really want to... Well, this part of area 1 keeps the modern look from the center, with ladders appearing frequently. Wait, let me take a random book.. Oh, I have got the book of Level 985, let's see what is in it.
Oh, so I can change almost everything? Wow, I didn't tought that someone could make such obvius lie... Let me change the entity count to 0. and make this level COMPLETELY devoid of light. But wait, why my pen does not work? It turned out I didn't saw the pen that was in the book, it allowed me to change the value. If I ever get out of this level, I will check if my changes applied. Well, probably not. Also, I saw the books have a different amount of pages but they are the same thickness... Well, it was probably done to fit more lies here. Well, for now I will shut up and try to find something other than repeating loop of ladders and books.
Documentation of area 3
ID-9298983 eventually decided to progress in terms of finding areas after trying to get to the center again.
Oh wow! They finally decided to tell the truth about this level being a literal hell! Well, I am sorry to these guys for me being few pararell universes ahead of them. But fine, I will stop joking around and describe area 2.
Well... The only changes that I saw there is smaller amount of books, lights are darker and everything looks untidy, rotten and dirty. Even the modern, white, concrete floor have changed into dirty, wet ground. Also, the pens in the books seem to act weirdly... They are broken and sometimes clip trough my hands, but wait - how does an object can clip trough my hand? And why it didn't teleport to another level?! This level is seriously we- wait, did I just hear a whisper that told me I am doomed forever? Well, it may confirm what I wrote previously or just another lie in this level... I will stay neutral for now. But hey! Even hallucinations!? Well, Even after walking 1 mile in you can see the truth of this level... The Redacted Watcher was stupid while making it.
Later, I figured out it was for sanity purposes.
Documentation of area 4
The agent found a place where the corridors met, which he figured out that was an entrance to another area. But due to fleeing entity pursuit, he was unable to write his first reaction and a detailed description of area 4, so he just wrote a quick note. The exploration of area 4 was continued by other unlucky wanderers who have suffered this level.
WHY THEY WANT TO SACRIFICE SO MANY INNOCENT SOULS?! WHY?! WHAT DID WE DO?! WHY!?
I am probably not safe here, because my hideout is not very good. Anyways, in area 3 there are entities, more hallucinations and blood, glitching and flying furniture also can be found, and uhh.. There is less light here, and there only non glitching furniture are beds which can be rarely found... I didn't have time to investigate them and their purpose, but I didn't have time to check out books. Also, I was very close to touching a wire which could kill me in a second, but luckily I avoided it, unlike an entity which wa
The log cuts here, which means the entities have found the explorer and the pursuit continued until ID-9298983 eventually made it to area 5. He only documented The Viruslands and The Naturelands, because these are the only biomes he met.
Documentation of The Naturelands
The Naturelands were rest for him after re-entering the hell again.
Oh wow, it is so nice here. It is not atleast so harsh as area 3, yknow. Everything is overgrown with moss and things, with trees rarely growing and a hole in the roof which we can see sun trought. The books have flowers in them and the pen is apparently fixed, with the bookshelf material being brown and resembling wood. And wow, there so much daises here, just like in The Frontrooms and no hallucinations/whispers can be seen or heard.. Well guys, this may sound dumb but I like this area. But I changed my mind after I saw a pill, which most presumably would kill me. Well, the paradise seems to end soon...
Documentation of The Viruslands
We are glad that he survived Viruslands to live and tell the story.
And the paradise ended. The moss changed to a strange, red plant, the bookshelves, books and roof look weird and rotten just like in area 2 and 3, with many furnitu-
They lost me. This subarea is infested with entities, which I am not suprised about. Also, I di-
Sorry, I had to cut it again. Hopeyfully, my hideout will be good for now. I will end what I wanted to write about. This subarea have a lot of non-glitching furniture which can serve as a shelter for me. Also, I discovered that the bookshelves, books and the roof have Liquid Pain soaked into them after I saw a dead body of wanderer having their hand on a book. And the paper was really red. Also, the floor changed. Instead of being made out of white concrete, the floor was made out of wood planks. They were REALLY dirty. The only source of light here is a self-powering light bulb, which is VERY weak, so it is really dark here.
Oh shit, I saw an Insanity running at me, I will head out.
Documentation of area 6
This is the last area that was explored by ID-9298983. He exited Level.exe using a bed.
Oh shit... I am in hell. It is even darker than in subarea 4.2, with me needing a fashlight to see things properly. I found a hideout in a place with no books... And you know what? The lack of light gave me a bit of advantage. I write everything quietly, and have not beem spotted by an entity, but one time I was close to death when reaching my book. I also saw that the bookshelves are painted black and there is much more blood here. When I tried to grab a book, it completely clipped trough my hand and started to float in the air, just like other books that I tried to touch. Later, I found out that not only book that I touched fly. This area is also devoid of furniture, but with a lot more hallucinations happening, mostly the dead bodies of loved ones. When I tried to touch one, it completely dissapeared. The floor stayed the same but with the addition of being dusty. While fleeing one of the entity pursuits with disturbing music playing in the background, I stumbled upon a bed. I've quickly covered my whole body with the quilt and tried to fall asleep. And here I am, in Level 777, walking for days...
The presumed areas 7 and 8
