I'm sure you thought suicide would be the end of your suffering in the Backrooms. I'm sorry to say… this is not the case.

Level ε is an area where lost, suicidal souls face torture after a successful attempt.

All in ruins…

Description

Level ε location resembles a destroyed, monochromatic town. Whether the town is actually monochromatic has not been determined yet, as entering Level ε will make Wanderers permanently view the world in black-and-white, even after leaving. Understand that one cannot simply abuse this level's entrance as a quick clutch from danger — if the judges conclude that a Wanderer lacked of suicidal ideation, there will be no continuation here. Said Wanderer will stay dead in the void of nothingness instead of waking up here.

Once here, buildings will collapse in a straight pattern, creating a visible pathway. Cries coming from inside the destroyed structures will always be present, but please ignore them. Venturing off-course from the path will trap Wanderers in the building debris.

First, you end your own life. Now you're trying to save other lives?

You couldn't even save your own life. Don't bother.

Traversing along the path will always lead Wanderers to a church after five minutes, regardless of walking pace. The church contains chairs lined up in three rows on both sides of the church, all facing a podium in dead center. Doors and windows behind the podium can be seen, although they are locked.

At the podium is a docile Smiler. It is important not to anger the Smiler; otherwise, the Smiler will immediately paralyze you, and you will vanish from existence. We do not know where you go after your disappearance, as all the victims were never seen again; however, we presume they are dead.

The Smiler will be angered if you stray from church etiquette — do not injure, lie to, or otherwise disrespect the Smiler's authority. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the church, and the chairs are strictly reserved for the priests.

After 10 seconds of spotting you, the Smiler will welcome you and ask why you are here.

You should know exactly why you're here.

You tried to free yourself from the pain.

We must reiterate that you must not lie to the Smiler. Although you still may be suicidal, the lack of information regarding the aftermath of the Smiler's paralysis leads us to believe your fate will be worse than death if you lie. Tell the truth, and the Smiler will give you a knife, and order you to commit ███████.

You have two minutes. During this ordeal, you will not feel any pain from injuries you inflict upon yourself. However, you will feel your systems shutting down as your brain desperately tries to stay alive. Death is supposed to be painless, after all. We recommend sticking the knife inside your throat for the quickest death.

If you injure yourself in any way, you will be transported to Level 0, still permanently colorblind. Otherwise, the Smiler will inflict paralysis upon you and send you off to the unknown.

Exploration Log

M.E.G. Recruit Jasper, interviewed after his team was intercepted at Level 0.

We were ordered by the M.E.G. to commit ███████.

Several of my teammates objected to the idea, but I felt otherwise. I didn't want to be here anymore.

I'm at such a low point in my life. I've witnessed Wanderers transform into Insanities, losing every human aspect of them. Frankly, we're now stuck in a prison, and I see no way out other than death. The M.E.G. seemed to agree. I took one of my team members' pistols, aimed it at my head, and pulled the trigger. As I bled out, my final words were, "It's better this way."

Jared, Michael, and Abel followed my lead soon after. I heard screaming, a bit of ”Don't you fucking dare" before gunshots rang out. Death claimed me soon afterward… or so I thought.

We didn't expect to go to the afterlife. We were probably going to wake up back in the Backrooms again, according to the M.E.G. We were right, but the place we were sent to looked nothing like Level 0.

It was this weird, black-and-white monotone place. Debris everywhere and destroyed structures. There were four of us. We were trying to get in contact with the M.E.G. operatives on our radios, but all we heard was static when they tried to respond.

Structures started collapsing. Jared heard cries for help and instinctively ran into the debris to save what he thought was an elderly woman. It engulfed him. We stood there, frozen in place for what seemed like several hours.

After calming down, Michael worked up the courage to walk the path, making sure to step around the debris. We followed him; I accidentally stepped on the path's debris, but I wasn't devoured. Thank fuck for that.

Anyway, we're walking for a few minutes, and we stumble across a church. I didn't want to suffer Jared's fate, so I told Michael to go, but he was having second thoughts. We argued for a few minutes before Michael just stormed inside, all frustrated. I remember his final words:

"You two are just a bunch of fucking pussies! I'll show you there's nothing to worry about. You want to find an exit or not?"

Shaken, we nod our heads and follow him. There's a Smiler at the podium of the church, and Michael points his gun at it. The Smiler makes a slight hand movement, and Michael's neck twists backwards. Good lord, he's rendered comatose. He's unconscious, but still breathing. Then he just dissolves into ash seconds later. Fuck.

The Smiler talks. I didn't know it could do that. Neither did Abel. I remember the Smiler's words:

"Welcome, Wanderers. Tell me, what brings you to this holy land?"

So, we answer:

"Reverend, we committed suicide."

The Smiler asks us to come closer, and asks us to stretch out our hands. He put a small dagger in each of our hands.

"You know exactly what you have to do."

I looked down at the knife, and thrusted it into my chest with all my might. I lost consciousness immediately.

Now we're back in Level 0. You're interviewing me, the majority of us are dead or missing, and now this place has that weird fucking color. I seriously remember this place being yellow. What the fuck happened to it?

Operative: Jasper, this place is yellow.

Shit.
