Personal Statement: Officer Atticus N. Wolfe

I spoke to the good doctor [see entity: 777.1]. He told me that this was either a game or a test. If this game or test is anything like the one I had to play in Level -532, I want no parts of it. Sighs in defeat. I am assuming I have no choice in the matter. A woman approached me not too long ago after my ordeal with Tuwile. I could not read her like your typical explorer. I knew straight away she was not human. She introduced herself to me as "G". Not short for Gigi but the letter "G"... Not suspicious at all. She revealed to me that she is a Producer "entity". He pauses, not liking the interaction, before scoffing. I ain't never heard of them before, but entity my a**! I could not read her worth sh*t, but I can tell when someone is lying to me. He backoffs his rant. Anyway, you, Gary, are telling me that they are something awful. I reckon I believe that. I am sorry... I am getting off topic... She tells me that I did very well standing up to Tuwile. She would not explain to me how she knew anything about that, but I know she was involved somehow. She told me that they are interested in assessing me further, and I have no choice but to participate. She told me I would still fulfill my role as a police officer. Level -50 will not be adversely affected by my absence as time there freezes when I am gone. She promised me that I would not die, but I might witness death. Pauses but resolves. I will do my best in whatever situation I am placed in. I am confident this is beyond my control, but a cool head wins a hot ball game. They want me to play... f*ck it! I will play.

Level -229 is the 229th negative level of the Backrooms.

Description

This image was taken by wanderer B.B. shows the inside Level -229. Wanderer B.B. is a "Boarding" passenger but has not encountered any explorers or entities yet.

Level -229 is the inside of a subway train consisting of a variable number of cars ranging from a minimum of two cars to an infinite number of cars. The average number of cars this train will consist of is nine. The train's car length can increase or decrease at random intervals during its commute. The increase or decrease in car number does not affect the speed the train is traveling. The train consistently travels at a top speed which is 55 mph (~ 89 km/h).

The interior of the car consists of the following components:

  • 6 flip benches. Each bench consists of 8 seats and 2 standing rails. The flip component can be located every 2 seats and reveals a wheelchair access space.
  • 6 windows positioned over flip benches.
  • 6 digital panels position above windows. Pay attention to what is being displayed on these panels!
  • 3 side sliding doors on each side of the car allowing commuters to exit or enter the car.
  • 1 sliding door to the front and back of the car allowing access to the next car over.

The interior of this car consists of an anomaly that allows large entities like the Malveillant to board and exit the train and traverse between cars. There have been no reports of any Malveillant riding inside these cars. There have been several reports of Natives riding on this train. This subway is mainly boarded by facelings however, other entities can board this subway. More on this later.

Level -229 requires that a randomly selected human (out of six allotted non-hostile humans) to survive their commute on this subway. This individual will be called the 'Boarding passenger'. The Boarding passenger must follow and obey the rules discussed below. The Boarding passengers will be mercilessly stalked by hostile entities unless they make a 'friend' (a.k.a. acquire protection). Keep in mind that some 'friends' offer better protection than others. The Boarding passenger also is at risk of getting exposed to a psychological hazard. All of this will be explained in detail below.

Psychological Hazard: Altered Social Behavior

Condition: General Description

One out of every three explorers who escape this level will be exposed to a cognito-hazard that triggers obsessive, possessive, and stalking behavior towards a random entity or non-infested explorer. They will know who their target is even if they have never encountered them or it. These individuals will not display abnormal behavior until they leave Level -229. Symptoms of exposure usually develops between 3 - 9 days after leaving the level.

Seeking Phase

These individuals will have a constant desire to find their target if they have not located them or it yet. They will excessively seek their target of interest. They will talk obsessively about their target of interest. These individuals will experience a strong sense of longing as they get closer to their target. They will emotionally and mentally deteriorate if they never reach their target. They will die from self-neglect or self-termination if they cannot reach their target of interest within 30 days. The Backrooms consists of dozens of spatial anomalies, so 85% of the exposed will perish because they could not find their target.

Stalking Phase

The exposed will put themselves in harm's way to get close to their target once they have been located. The exposed will display attention-seeking behaviors to get their target to notice them. They will be overly friendly or affectionate toward the target of interest. They will attempt to give gifts to the target of interest. They will want to spend as much time with their target. They will worship their target of interest.

Target's Response and Terminal Phase

Individuals exposed to this hazard have a 40:60 chance of being drawn to a harmless or hostile explorer or entity, respectively. Individuals who are drawn to entities of low intelligence risk their target avoiding or killing them. Individuals who are drawn to hostile individuals or hostile intelligent entities risk getting rejected, exploited, or killed. Individuals who are drawn to non-hostile entities or individuals risk rejection and avoidance by their target. Some non-hostile intelligent entities or individuals will entertain that individual's affection for them until they can get that individual help. It is worth noting here that the exposed might attack their target or self-terminate if they are rejected. Non-hostile, intelligent entities and individuals who decide to help the exposed are encouraged to be prepared to defend themselves or others around them. The exposed will get jealous and attempt to attack and kill anyone who gets between them and their target. They will also attempt to attack and kill their target if they feel betrayed. Exposed individuals will not know that they have been exposed until they exit Level -229.

General Rules of Riding in Level -229

Pay attention to what is being displayed on digital panels!

Why? These panels are providing you with vial information. Some of the information these panels are providing have been included below:

  1. You broke a rule. There is nothing you can do to counter the punishment. Embrace yourselves for what is to come.
  2. You broke a rule. Here are instructions to counter the punishment. Act quickly.
  3. The train is departing a level [designation here] and will be stopping at this other level [designation here]. Prepare to exit if this is your stop.
  4. A hostile is watching you. Would you like a bodyguard? Non-hostile explorer or intelligent entity is [location here].
  5. This car is going to disappear in 2 minutes. Please, relocate yourself to car [designation here].
  6. Reality is restoring a certain number of cars. You may stay where you are or move to these other available cars.
These digital panels will emit an audible ping to alert you that information is being displayed. No one but you will see the information displayed on digital panels, or hear the ping.

Don’t crowd/block the doors!

Why? What do you mean why? It is rude? It makes it hard for other people to get on and off the subway.

What will happen if you do not obey this rule?

The car is empty. You will be jettisoned off the car by a mysterious force. You have one minute to find a seat, position yourself at the available subway poles or handrails. You can stand or sit in the middle of the benches. You can even pace the aisle just DO NOT block the door.

The car is already occupied. Non-hostile and hostile explorers and entities will viciously stare you down until you move off in front of the door. You will have 60 seconds to take a seat, grab the rails or pole, or position yourself in the middle of the benches. This train never fills past 80% of capacity, so there is no reason for you to block the door. Failure to comply will result in everyone on the train savagely beating you to death or you being forced off the train. If you are forced off the train, there is a 75% chance you will no-clip and fall into The Void. So... do not be a**.

Please! Do not block doors!

Digital Panel message: Warning you to stop blocking the door.

Other people would like to get in. Please! Take a seat!

Digital Panel message: Requesting you to stop blocking the door and for you to take a seat.

It is open season on individual [full name and picture provided].

Digital Panel message: Everyone is going to attack you for the blocking the door.

You like blocking doors? Try blocking out The Void!
Digital Panel message: When you are forced out, The Void is where you will end up.

Let the old/disabled/pregnant people sit down.

Why? These individuals are a fall or a faint risk.

What will happen if you do not obey this rule? You will be asked to give up your seat.

  • If you comply, an intelligent non-hostile entity or explorer will surrender their seat to the concerning individual instead.
  • If you fail to comply, an intelligent hostile entity or explorer will surrender their seat to the concerning individual instead. If Officer Atticus N. Wolfe is not present, your risk of getting killed by that entity or explorer is 90%. If Officer Atticus N. Wolfe is present, find him quickly and tell him of your misdeed. He will lightly scold you for your behavior. He will offer to serve as your bodyguard until you can safely exit the train. The hostile entity will come after you if you decide to not stick with the officer. If you stay with the officer, you will only have to deal with that entity viciously staring at you from across the aisle.

Note! This rule is only in effect when the train's benches are occupied, and it is standing room only.

Standing room only! Please, prepare to give your seat up to the elderly, disabled and pregnant individuals.

Digital Panel message: Requesting that you give your seat up to these vulnerable individuals.

You did not comply. Please, location Officer Wolfe in car 7 or die.

Digital Panel message: Not surrendering your seat to vulnerable individuals will result in this message being displayed if Officer Wolfe is present.

You did not comply. Officer Wolfe cannot be located. You are on your own. Good luck!

Digital Panel message: Not surrendering your seat to vulnerable individuals will result in this message being displayed if Officer Wolfe is absent.

Officer Atticus N. Wolfe is the only 'being' that can help you if you violate this rule. There is a 35% chance Officer Atticus N. Wolfe will be aboard Level -229 so it is in your best interest to be courteous.

Be Mindful of Your Surroundings But Do Not Stare

Why? You need to be on the lookout for any hostile entities in the area, however, staring at people or entities is rude.

What will happen if you do not obey this rule?

It depends on who you are starting at. The subway is usually pre-dominated by harmless adults and children facelings. If you stare at one of these beings, you will get a message from the digital panel telling you to stop doing this. Nothing will happen to you. You will be criticized by the panel for being rude, weird, awkward, or unsocialized.

Stop staring. You are making the facelings uncomfortable.

Digital Panel message: This message will appear if you insist on staring at random facelings.

You might spot the one hostile human explorer, partygoers, skin-stealers, hostile Travelers from Level -202, 'Other Commuters' for Level -92 and The Producers who have shapeshifted into other intelligent non-hostile entities. Staring at these beings is an invitation for them to attack and kill you. They are looking for you, so staring at them will draw their attention to you. One would assume that if you saw a partygoer you would flee. Humans or entities that pass as a human is a different story. Your chance of survival increases if you have a 'friend', but you should not trust the first 'human' you see (more on this later).

Stop staring. He has not seen you yet but he will.

Digital Panel message: This message will appear if you insist on staring at a human or humanoid entity that is potentially dangerous.

If you see a human or entities staring at you from across the aisles, you need to find a 'friend' immediately.

A hostile is watching you. Would you like a bodyguard? Officer Wolfe is in car 31.
Digital Panel message: This message will appear if you are being stared at by a hostile entity.

Do Not Ride Alone

Why? You are being stalked by one violent human explorer and several dangerous hostile entities.

What will happen if you do not obey this rule? Your chance of survival depends on the following:

  • How well you have been paying attention to the digital panels.
  • Whether or not you have combat training. Your average explorer is your typical Joe or Jane, so the likelihood of you having combat training is slim to none. Some entities will be discouraged from attacking you if you have combat training. There are some entities that will attack you and there is nothing you can do to stop them because you are a mere mortal compared to them.
  • How quickly can you find a 'friend'?
  • How long you can avoid your stalker(s)?
  • How long is the subway. Having a long subway train can work for you or against you. Pros: You can create distance between you and your attacker if you are in a crowd of facelings. You have more places to hide. You might have more time to find a 'friend'. Cons: You might have a harder time finding a 'friend'. You risk running into another hostile. (Some hostiles hunt in packs or will team up on you.) You risk getting lost if you go in too deep.

Human Explorers

Level -229 only allows a total of seven human explorers to come aboard.

One human explorer will function as the 'Boarding' passenger and enter Level -229 by one of the side sliding doors. This individual is always a non-hostile human explorer and will not have any physical, visual or audio impairments. This individual will be subjected to the rules. As long as this individual does not immediately violate rule 2, the explorers and entities, regardless of their level of hostility, will not be a source of concern.

Six human explorers will function as 'Pre-existing' passengers and will know to behave as such. These individuals will appear on Level -229 seated or holding onto rails and poles. Five of these explorers will be non-hostile. There is a 0.01% any of these individuals will have physical, visual, or audio impairments. The remaining explorer will be hostile and will have no impairments.

The digital panels will warn you of danger by giving you subtle hints.

Are you sure?

Digital Panel message: This message will appear if that explorer is potentially dangerous.

There is a 0.05% chance at least one of these five non-hostile explorers will have some combat training. It is strongly recommended that you make friends with human explorers with combat training. Hostile entities and explorers will attempt to separate you from your friend, but they risk getting injured or killed in the process as they are not allowed to harm them. It is worth mentioning that finding the handful of human explorers on this subway is almost impossible. The subway will add cars to itself, creating more space for you to search. This subway is mainly being boarded by facelings.

If you are in danger and need a friend, remember to consult the panel. The panel will tell you how close you are to a 'friend'. Human explorers cannot help you if you violated rule 3. They will attack you if you violated rule 2. Do not rely solely on the protection of other humans. Some entities cannot be stopped by another human and you put that other person in the position to watch you get killed.

Do you need a bodyguard? You can find Amygdala in car 3.

Digital Panel message: This message will appear if the explorer is dangerously close to getting attacked. Your closest helper is a non-hostile entity.

Seeking and Engaging Helper Entities

Amygdala

You, Gary, want to know if I am a Malveillant? Lower ears to show submission Oh... Dieu non! I am a Native, however; the Malveillant is a corrupt variant of a Native. I am sorry if my presence intimidates you. Intimidation is never my intentions. Sits down to make himself smaller but he is unsuccessful. Stay with me only if you are comfortable. I wish to help you get out of here safely.

Amygdala (a.k.a. Pretty Boy/Rose pâle tachée de sang) is a young Native Tracker and Mystic from Level -777. He has recently been promoted to Hunter and Guardian. He has been introduced in chronological order from Level -40 to Level -212. He has gotten taller. He now towers at 18'2" (~5.53m). He is significantly more muscular and battle-hardened. Explorers will describe him as soft-spoken, sweet, and reserved. He has gotten more confident. His gentle nature is still underestimated by his opponents. Amygdala is still notorious for slaughtering his opponents with a coy and playful smile on his face, but there is a hint of bloodlust behind his smile.

Fear not, Gary. It is in our nature to enjoy the hunt.

Amygdala Do's, Don't's and F.Y.I.

Do's

  • Accept any gifts from him. He usually carries neon water and weapons on his person.
  • Find him if the digital panel is encouraging you to seek him out. Most entities will not oppose him.
  • Find him if you are approached by any entities that favor Astrid. The other commuters from Level -92 like to shapeshift into him, but they distort his features in the process making it obvious it is not him. Producer A also likes to take Astrid's form, but his mimicry is flawless. Amygdala knows his father's aura. He will know whether or not that is his father or Producer A.

I am the only one here that can see through you disguise, Mgepog-mglw'nafh-ehye! You lost this round with this one. Let them leave with me in peace or I will leave your husk in pieces. Draws sais.

Producer A posing as Astrid comments: You see! That is why I like you and want you on my team...!

The devil is always looking for souls to devour. You will not have mine. The explorer fulfilled the requirements of this game. You lost! Leave! I will not be asking you again!

Don't's

  • Violate rule 2 or 3. You will not find him if you violate these rules.
  • Refuse to seek him out if the panel is encouraging you to do so. You risk of being attacked is 70%. Your chance of survival is 30%.
  • Mess with his ears. He does not like that.

F.Y.I.'s

  • If you have been exposed to the hazard present on this level, he will take you to Level -115 without question.
  • Your chance of finding Amygdala is variable, ranging from 30% - 60% with an average of 35%.

Vitocoz

You, Gary, stink of fear! You must not be afraid! Some of these entities are enticed by your fear! Calm yourself or you will die.

Vitocoz (a.k.a. Voleur de Sang) is an older Native from Level -777. He is a Warrior Chieftan and Mystic who specialists in blood magic. Explorers will describe him as bold, serious, and indifferent. He is 30'4" (~9.24 m) tall. He is missing part of his left-wing and left ear. He is covered in battle scars and tattoos. He is battle-hardened many decades over. His weapon of choice is a Claymore.

His kills are clean and direct. He does not like wasting time bluffing. He kills his opponent with a straight face. He will pray that his opponent's soul is at peace after executing them. He does display endearment and pity for humans that cannot defend themselves in combat situations. He demonstrates respect and awe towards humans who can hold their own in combat. He departed Level -777 to assist the M.E.G. and train Amygdala. He wishes to appoint Amygdala as his successor, but the young buck still has a lot to learn.

Vitocoz Do's, Don't's and F.Y.I.

Do's

  • Accept any gifts from him. He usually carries almond water, cured meat and weapons on his person.
  • Find him if the digital panel is encouraging you to seek him out. No entities will oppose him. The Producers will not interfere.
  • Find him if you are approached by an entities that favor him. The other commuters from Level -92 like to shapeshift into him, but they distort his features in the process making it obvious it is not him. Vitocoz will happily slaughter his mimics just run pass him and take a seat behind him when you find him.

I find this insulting! If you ugly beast are going to pose as me, at least put in some effort!

Don't's

  • Violate rule 2 or 3. You will not find him if you violate these rules.
  • Refuse to seek him out if the panel is encouraging you to do so. You risk of being attacked is 90%. Your chance of survival is 10%.
  • Ask if he is a Malveillant. He will not kill you for asking but it will p*ss him off.

F.Y.I.'s

  • If you have been exposed to the hazard present on this level, he might mercy kill you if Amygdala or Astrid is not present on the train. He does not know how to get your to Level -115.
  • Your chance of finding Vitocoz is variable, ranging from 10% - 75% with an average of 40%.

Dr. Astrid F. Nightingale

I do not look like Astrid...? Laughs sheepishly. Because this is what I really look like.

Astrid has been introduced as the therapist and clinical psychologist of The Backrooms. He usually appears as a 20ish-year-old, androgynous entity but decided to take on his true form, The 'Seraphim'. While he is embarrassed (and a little ashamed) by this form, he decided it would be easier for the 'Boarding passenger' to tell him apart from Producer A. The Producers was shocked by this move and decided to let Astrid play guardian angel under one condition, the 'Boarding passenger' has a 25% chance of finding him. Producer A agreed to not take on Astrid's true form. No other entity is allowed to take on this form or they would be killed. The Producers want the people to witness his true form but still make it difficult for them to escape with him.

Astrid Do's, Don't's and F.Y.I.

Do's

  • Accept any gifts from him. He usually carries purple almond water on his person.
  • Stay with him if you find him. No one entity will oppose him. The Producers want him back, so attacking him would not be in their best interest.
  • Allow him to heal you if you have any injuries or have been exposed to the psychological hazard.
  • (optional) Ask him about his son, Amygdala, if you wish to hear a proud father gush about his son.

Don't's

  • Violate rule 2 or 3. You will not find him if you violate these rules.
  • Trust any entity that looks like Astrid. What you are looking for is an angelic-like being.
  • Remove feathers from his wings. He does not like it.

F.Y.I.'s

  • He is the only helper entity that does not have a digital notification. You have a 25% of finding him on your own. You have a 90% chance of finding him if you are with Amygdala and Astrid is present in Level -229. You have a 40% chance of finding him if you are with Vitocoz and Astrid is present in Level -229. It is best to avoid any entities that look like him.

Officer Atticus N. Wolfe

Officer Atticus N. Wolfe is a false faceling with full facial features. He appears as an adult between the ages of 25 - 30 years. He takes the form of a Caucasian male in a police uniform who sports short brunette hair and a little stubble on the chin. He has piercing green eyes and a confident smile (or smirk). His facial features disappear when he is annoyed, frustrated, disappointed, angry, upset or scared.

He is usually found in Level -50, however, powers beyond his control decided he needed to branch out. He now can be found driving on the road of Level -92 resisting the hypnotic effects of that level to ensure he and his passenger make it safely out. He survived the Malveillant Tuwile in Level -532. He has been asked to serve and protect any passengers that approach him in Level -229.

It looks good on my resume... All jokes aside, you, Gary, look like you brought company? Looks around you. So... Paul... assuming that is your real name... we all know that is not your real name... do you want beat, tazed or shot? All of the above is an option.

Just Paul from Level -202: Oh...! Hello, Officer Wolfe! There is no need for hostility. I was just passing through...

Lie to someone else, Paul. Removes his pistol from his hoister. You best leave because I might make the decision for you... and I have chosen to shoot you.

Officer Wolfe Do's, Don't's and F.Y.I.

Do's

  • Find him if you violated rule 3.
  • Find him if the digital panel is encouraging you to seek him out. No entity will touch him for reasons unknown.
  • Find him if an odd number of facelings start helping you hide, shielding you and moving you towards the next car over. The faceling is his people and they are trying to help you get to him.
  • Accept any gift from him. He usually carries almond water, rose water and food from the convenience store in Level -50 on his person.
  • Ask him if you have been exposed to the hazard present on this level. He will take you to Level -115 just to be safe.
  • Tell him that you are low on supplies, and he will help you get off on Level -50. (Do not do this if you committed a serious crime. He will go easy on you if you committed a minor crime.) He still might take you to Level -115 afterwards just to be safe.

Don't's

  • Violate rule 2. You will not find him if you violated that rule.
  • Be afraid if he blanks his face. His not going to hurt you but his is intimidating someone or something lurking nearby.

F.Y.I.'s

  • While there is a 35% chance of him being abroad Level -229, your chance of finding him if he is present is 80%. He broke the rules by asking the other facelings to find you and guide you to him. He will actively seek you out with the help of the other facelings who might have seen you. The Producers are aware this is taking place but is allowing it for reasons unknown.

Ugly Truth

Most Boarding passengers will enter this level without any helpers around to help them escape. Most Boarding passengers will get killed by their stalker(s). Some will escape and discover a little too late they have been exposed to the psychological hazard but will be too fixated on finding their target to care. A few will get lost within the endless cars of Level -229 not realizing that part of the subway was jettison from the rest of the train.

Oh no! I am sorry... You went too far in. I will say here with you until you find your way back.

Digital Panel message: This message will appear if the 'Boarding passenger' is lost within Level -229.

Are you still here? :(

Digital Panel message: This message will appear if the 'Boarding passenger' is dying somewhere alone in Level -229 and the digital panel is keeping them company until they pass.

Less than 5% of the 'Boarding passengers' who get lost will find their back. Less than 10% will attempt to no-clip and end up somewhere worse.

Colonies and Outposts

Level -229 will not allow human explorers to set up colonies or outpost on this train.

Entrances and Exits

Entrances

Entrance: Pre-existing passenger

  • These passengers will be randomly extracted from the human pool of explorers present in The Backrooms.

Entrance: Boarding passenger

  • There is a 70% chance a random person will be extracted from the human pool of explorers present in The Backrooms.
  • Slipping and falling off the platform and landing on the train tracks has a 50% change of you no-clipping and ending up in Level -229.
  • No-clipping the train tracks in Level 363 has a 10% change of you ending in Level -229.
  • Blocking the train door of Level 61 has a 30% chance of you ending up in Level -229. Just do not block the doors in Level -229.
  • Jumping off the train in Level -10 has a 25% chance of you ending up in Level -229.

Exits

Exits: Pre-existing passenger

  • These passengers will be escorted off the subway by a non-hostile entity when the "Boarding passenger" is killed, escapes or is irretrievable lost. They will be taken to a random level with a survival classification of 0 - 1.

Exits: Boarding passenger

  • Amygdala's exit(s): He will help you get off at Level -115 if you have been exposed the psychological hazard. He will help you get off at Level 716 or Level 1998 if you have not been exposed.
  • Vitocoz's exit: He will help you get off in Level 11 if you are not exposed.
  • Astrid's exit: He will help you get off at any safe level of your choosing.
  • Atticus's exit(s): He will help you get off at Level -115 if he thinks you have been exposed the psychological hazard. He will take you to Level -50 if you are low on supplies and have not been exposed. He will take you to Level -115 if you feel off to him after reaching Level -50.
  • Your exit: Watching the digital panel for your choice of exit will take you to that exit.
  • Exit: Bad endings
    • Failure to move from a car that is being jettisoned from the subway will result in you being 'lost'.
    • Going too deep into Level -229 has a 60% chance of you getting lost and forced to wander the infinite cars of Level -229 until you perish of starvation or thirst or attempt to no-clip to escape.
    • Attempting to no-clip to escape Level -229 after getting 'lost' will result in you ending up in a random level with a survival classification of 5 or falling into The Void.
    • Being forced off the train because you violated rule 2 has a 75% chance of you falling into The Void and 25% of you ending up in Level 6.
