Empty White Room: Description
This image, also taken by wanderer B.B., shows 'The Windrow' in Level -40.
What is beyond that door is a drop into the ‘unknown’… Level -40 begins with you, Gary, in a completely white, small room with one window and one door. This space is empty. You will be facing the door with the window behind you. There is nothing outside the window besides the radiant glow of light.
Are you, Gary, willing to take the plunge?
Before you jump out or onto anything, here are your options:
- You could escape out the window. I like to give explorers options despite most of them not being good. I will tell you this much...that means of escape does not have a good outcome.
- You can stay here. There are no resources here minus anything you brought with you. F.Y.I. The room is sentient. It will “eat” your supplies. How? Why…? Why anything in The Backrooms?
- You can try and no-clip the walls. Do not do this! I have watched people throw themselves on the walls, floor, and ceiling to end up injuring or killing themselves. How they got up to the ceiling is anyone's guess. If you decide to throw yourself around in here, aim with your shoulders and not with your head. Yes! I must tell you that! Again, this room is sentient, so after 10 - 30 attempts, it will get sick of your bullsh*t and kill you.
- You are asking me to take you out of here!? I will consider it, but there is a 97% chance this level will not allow it. We will get separated during our descent, and you might end up someplace worse. I will not be able to retrieve you. I feel as if I am sending you to your death as it is. Cet endroit est étrange. Je n'aime pas ça!
- You go out the door. Again, going out the door means you fall into the ‘unknown’.
While I cannot tell you where you will free fall, I can give you some examples of the atmospheres you might pass through.
Falling into the Known Unknown
Level -40 requires you to take an Acte de foi (Translation: Leap of Faith) out of the only white door on this level. You will initially see a white void upon jumping out of this door. This white void will transition to white clouds. What the white clouds transition into afterward is anyone’s guess as the trip down varies from person to person. You will not see the 'ground' while free falling. Wanderers who have survived the jump claim they more or less 'appear' in the next level. Below are examples of possibly free-falling spaces.
Free Fall option 1: Normal Blue Sky
Free Fall option 2: Fire Rising Up
Free Fall option 3: Into Darkness
Free Fall option 4: [Unknown]
Free Fall option 5: This Mortal Coil
Free Fall option 6: Winter's Iridescence
Free Fall option 1: Normal Blue Sky
This image, also taken by wanderer B.B., catches a glimpse of Free Fall option 1: Normal Blue Sky
Description
Level -40's Free Fall option 1 is blue skies with a few wispy clouds. This free fall space generates 'sunlight' from an unknown source. However, the sky is perpetually in the state of midmorning or high noon. The temperature in this free-falling space is between 58°F - 71°F (~14.4°C - 21.7°C). This free fall space produces an unknown hypnotic and tranquilizing effect. Most wanderers have reported falling asleep mid-fall because of this effect. The descent can take anywhere from 30mins to 4hours. You will feel invigorated and calm when you land. You will not encounter any airborne entities during your descent.
Entrances and exits

- If you do not fall asleep while free falling, you will appear in Level 11.
- If you do fall asleep while free falling but wake up before you 'hit' the 'ground', you will appear in Level 10.

Free Fall option 2: Fire Rising Up
This image, take by wanderer W.D.G., catches a glimpse of Free Fall option 2: Fire Rising Up. Wanderer W.D.G. survived their descent into Level -4.

The temperature in this free-falling space is between 82°F - 113°F (~27.8C - 45°C). Even though the atmosphere is not too hot, you will experience the sensation of receiving 4-degree burns all over your body. The descent can take anywhere from 13hours to 1day. You will feel anxious when you land. Most wanderers have reported seeing undefined winged entities flying in the distance. One wanderer claimed that they heard screams in the atmosphere and these flying creatures swarming another jumper. This jumper was never identified, and their body has not been found.

The temperature in this free-falling space is between 56°F - 77°F (~13.3C - 25°C). The descent can take anywhere from 6hours to 5days. You will be terrified and anxious when you land. I mean... if they had a photo of this space, would they know what it is? Anyway... free falling here could take you anywhere. I know there is some sort of cognitohazard present in this free fall. I have a feeling what is there should be forgotten.

Empty White Room: Colonies and outposts

Empty White Room: Entrances and exits
Entrances
- Entertaining Amara on Level -222 might result in Amara sparing you. He will teleport you to Level -40.
- Traveler (rating 5) "Amy and her Labradoodle" from Level -202 will take you to an exit that leads to Level -40 if you are six vehicle transfers in.
- Hiding in a closet in Level 9 might transport you to Level -40.
- No clipping a corner in Level 19 might transport you to Level -40.
Exits
- Trying to escape Level -40 via the empty, small white room by running into the walls, floor or ceiling with the hope of no-clipping will cause you to injury or kill yourself or the room will get sick of your attempts and kill you. Quoi? You thought I was kidding!
- No-clipping the windrow. S'il te plaît, do not do this... I have clairaudience. Where ever plain of existence you will end up does not sound good. The last person who went that route has been screaming in horror for eight days now. I cannot get to them.
- Recruiting Amygdala to help you on your descent increases the likelihood of falling through a safe atmosphere and getting to a safe exit. However, there is a 97% chance you and him will be separated, resulting in you ending up in a dangerous place.
- Taking the plunge out of the white door will take you through a randomized atmosphere connected to a specific exit. Jumping out the door does not guarantee survival but increases your odds.
