Level -69 is the 69th negative level of the Backrooms.

Description

Level -69, nicknamed "The Foggy Avenue", is an expansive, overwhelming network of interconnected asphalt road systems. The concentration of these roads varies; it is typical for them to be more compact and chaotic after an uncertain distance, usually a length of a hundred kilometers. The color of the thick fog overwhelming most regions varies in color, usually a mix of orange and blue.

The architecture of Level -69 is perplexing, whilst simultaneously constructed out of the same reinforced concrete and appearance. It is stiff, though only varies negligibly on minuscule and insignificant features. Its seemingly purposed objective to function as an artificial environment to provide housing is nullified due to its both architecture and geometry; it is entirely devoid of any structures, buildings, or skyscrapers. Though Level -69 mainly consists of limitless roads extending into the abyss, the level is devoid of any vehicles; increasingly abrogating its intended purpose.

Its alien-like geometry also shares similar characteristics, mainly random roads are protruding out of the ground seemingly randomly without any circumstances; traffic lights placed in abnormal and unmeaningful locations; unnecessary roads stretching to nonsensical places; looping roads circling a specific area, and rollercoaster-like roads functioning more as death traps rather than being a mode of transportation. This circumstance led to mapping and exploring the level difficult; it is easy to be disoriented due to the lack of meaningful geometry and architecture on the level. Almond Water may relieve this concern, regardless, drops of Almond Water periodically fall from the sky above.

The level is seemingly stuck in a state of abandonment; the monotony of the level is superficially caused by unknown means of the disappearance of theorized past inhabitants of the level. Nevertheless, there are no traces of a possible previous society that could have existed before, even graffiti and marks from other wanderers had never been spotted. The existence of time is wholly disannulled in Level -69, as decomposition and decay of the level are seemingly halted; in addition to the level remaining stuck around night.

In a case of a group or an organization of more than 2 people determined to enter Level -69, the randomly selected positions they will be guided to will most likely be far from each other, usually an estimated distance of around one million kilometers. The level does not possess such alteration of its linear space, it is simply unimaginably massive in size.

Fog in Level -69 drastically changes per area, one could enter a specific area and the color the fog possesses changes from orange to blue, or vice-versa. This fog remains consistently thick throughout the level, limiting the visibility of wanderers in Level -69. By undetermined means, wanderers in Level -69 experience feelings of intense paranoia, distinguishable from other levels. This anomaly does not possess a source; however, it is conjectured that the vastness of the level, in addition to the misty thick fog surrounding the level, are possible culprits of such anomaly.

Additional Information

While Level -69 possesses an anomaly that makes wanderers experience paranoia, the background noise of melancholy music ranging from the 1900s to 2010s does play for certain occasions. This anomaly occurs when one is in a state of extreme fear, questioning themselves if an entity is nearby, or possibly afraid of the anomalies in Level -69. The purpose of this anomaly is unknown, though it is theorized it may be a level's endeavor to comfort wanderers unintentionally.

Recovered Notes

Recovered Note
The Foggy Avenue

Recovered statements from Sci. Sherwood D. Holmes.

One of my vivid memories from my earlier years took place on an empty road. It was a quiet winter night in south Minnesota — right in the middle of nowhere — the place’s solitude was unbearable for me. The thick fog overwhelms the majority of the visibility, I could not see any structures, vehicles, or anyone if there is anyone to begin with. The car’s heater was not enough to combat the freezing temperature, we had no choice but to wear thick clothing. I was scared for my life, “Dad, can you please slow down?”, I remarked. I was afraid we would crash into a ditch, or a moose or a deer would suddenly appear in front of the speeding car. This memory is not the only one that took place on an empty road, there are countless others that I had likely forgotten, or were too vague for me to describe the events.

Streetlights overwhelmed by the fog.

I have come to reckon the Foggy Avenue is such a place that would terrify persons with similar memories; the reminiscence of cold winds breezing over them, the isolation of the empty road without a single soul in sight, and the fear and paranoia of someone or something, could just be hiding, stalking, and following right behind them. Its intended objective of being a mode of transportation is annulled due to a variety of factors, its monotony had secluded its purpose beyond assimilation. The architecture of the roads itself is substantially indistinguishable, or even identical to ones present in normal reality, however, the manner it is constructed, and the geometry had its similarity disfigured. I suppose this abnormal geometry was intentionally put, a characteristic to maximize the fear and confusion it induces. Regardless, driving around would be described as a daydream, a place racers wish to compete in due to its solitary and expansive nature.

One of the features of this level had baffled me is its complete utter lack of life. I had researched, studied, and done numerous deep explorations into levels, however, no such place had made me difficult to sleep due to the questions and theories I had come up with. How does an extinction with such a scale happen? The population of bacteria, viruses, and other diseases from everyday reality to the Backrooms themselves are comprehensively wiped out from existence. Theoretically, with enough wanderers, the problem of the lack of life could be solved; besides, it is not difficult to find entrances to the level. Heedless of this case, the solution to this anomalous problem had yet to be discovered.

In conjecture, the Foggy Avenue indisputably amazes me due to its characteristics unlike others. It triggers fear like no other — it takes advantage of each possible feature it could have possibly possess: the expansive nature; the substantial fog to develop terror on who or what is behind and ahead; and the unfathomable anomalies to bewilder persons. While most are overwhelmed by the isolation, a few would ponder the place's existence. How does such a place exist? How can one construct such a place? Humans are — and always will be curious; it is an undoubted fact. Anyhow, most will remain unanswered, mysterious, kept inside the hidden compounds of the place itself; waiting to be discovered by fortunate, or some may remark, unfortunate individuals. The Foggy Avenue will always be a place congested with monotony, a place substantially unique, yet, dreadfully familiar.

Entities Anomalies

Anomalous properties of Level -69 had resulted in all life forms completely disappearing, meaning the entirety of the location itself is sanitized. It is undetermined what, or possibly who led to such large-scaled disappearance. Theoretically, it is viable to consume puddles due to possible condensation in the level, considering all life, including bacteria and viruses had disappeared.

Regardless, 2 anomalies haphazardly occurred in Level -69, the Upside Down and the Lights. It is unknown if these subjects are entities, and information based on them is limited. These "entities" lack any threat towards any life which might exist on the level, nevertheless, it is instructed to be aware of their surroundings.

The Upside Down

An image of the Upside Down anomaly.

The Upside Down is an anomaly in which the level itself appears to be replicated and inverted in some manner. The distance between the inverted and the normal version of the level varies, it is estimated this distance ranges from approximately a meter to 10 kilometers. It is feasible to interact with this anomaly physically on ones that do not possess such immense distance which results in it is humanly impossible to reach.

Abnormally, usage of the right techniques, one could feasibly stand on the surface of this inverted anomaly without any problem. Gravity from the original version of the level does not affect this, however. As a substitute, both versions bear their respective gravity; it is difficult to comprehend this abnormality, however, it is theorized there exists an invisible plane, a border between each version of the level, differing in the timeline as if it is a multiverse of some sort.

By unknown means, this Upside Down effect will disintegrate following a certain amount of time. If one decides to stay on this Upside Down version of the level, the chance of possibly falling to the Void is immensely high; only a few had ever landed on another level.

The Lights

A rare image of the Lights.

The Lights are rare anomalies taking an appearance of firework-like sparkles appearing in the sky which loop around aimlessly without a certain destination. They do not appear to be an entity, nor hallucinations experienced by wanderers. This anomaly will occur after one stays for an unspecified amount of time, usually around 5 days to 3 months before appearing. The cause of this anomaly is unknown, it is theorized the clouds present in the level might possess a substance that reacts with a particle in the air, resulting in the formation of these anomalous lights to appear.

The Lights are mainly harmless; however, their unstable nature on occasion harm subjects. Due to the lack of a certain destination, these Lights possess a chance of harming a wanderer. If unlucky enough, these Lights might cause severe burns, leaving permanent burn marks on unsuspecting wanderers.

Colonies & Outposts

The immense scale of Level -69 results in establishing a community infeasible.

Entrances & Exits

An entrance in Level 11 to Level -69.

Entrances

  • Going into large highways within Level 11 may lead one here.
  • Commuting or staying in the gondola lift in Level 39 possesses a chance of granting one access to Level -69.
  • Anomalies causes an area of Level 69 to fade in Level -69. Entering the region will grant one access to Level -69.
  • Certain locations having a grid-like pattern in Level 974 might lead one to Level -69;

Exits

  • As previously mentioned, falling to the sky will lead one to multiple levels, nevertheless, usage of this endeavor is risky;
  • Any vegetation and life forms in Level -69 are a sign of a close exit to Level 94;
  • While permanent vehicles do not exist in the level, rare instances of cars that appear act as gateways to Level 123;
  • Entering a tunnel would very rarely lead one to Level 777.
