Level 1038 is the 1039th level in the backrooms, it is also known by the nickname "Monotown".

Description

Image of Level 1038 taken on a balcony in a backyard. Photographer found dead.

Level 1038 is a monochrome suburban neighborhood that goes on for about 7 miles by 2.57 Miles until it fades into the Neo-Void (see the tab for it).

The neighborhood is filled with buildings that can range from 1 story shack-like houses to large 3 story houses and if you go far out enough there's occasionally a very small neighborhood shop awkwardly squeezed in between houses. All of the buildings and structures in Level 1038 are completely monochrome and empty inside except for the occasional chairs and fridges, the buildings also emit very eerie sounds that can be heard once inside the building with each building emitting it's own unique sound but usually it seems that smaller buildings emit higher pitched sounds while the larger buildings emit lower pitched sounds.

Occasionally within the level buildings will start to occur at a decreasing frequency until there are no more buildings in sight, whenever you start to notice a decrease in the rate of buildings don't continue further in the path you were walking as there have been many reports of "unknown and hellish" phenomena within these reaches, if you do continue to proceed then tread with caution and never ████ ██ ███ ███.

Despite the level being completely monochrome and seeming to be pitch black at times it does in fact have a day/night cycle, it's day/night cycle is 12 hours long with the day being 3 hours long and the night being 9 hours long. During the day, a subtle heat can be felt and if outside for too long during this short period one could inexplicably be susceptible to mild radiation poisoning. It is still unknown how and why that is and where the radiation source comes from but some theories state that there is actually a natural radiation level in the level and during the day the radiation just increases drastically due to an unforeseen force but that is yet to be confirmed as it still remains a mystery.

Occasionally there is a chance that one may spot a non-monochromatic object or entity on this level (approximately a one in 2 thousand chance to do so) however, it is highly advised that none interacts with any non-monochromatic objects/entities on this level as whenever one does so contact with them ceases leading many to believe that non-monochromatic entities and objects in this level are usually highly unstable and leads those who touch it to The Void.

Lastly, the level has a very high entity count and is very dangerous as many entities roam the streets so it's recommended that if you do find yourself in this level to stay inside of a building, but that does not eliminate the possibility of entities being within the buildings as well.

The Neo-Void

The Neo-Void is what lies beyond 7x2.57 Miles that encompasses the known parts of the level, nobody knows what happens in the Neo-Void as a thick fog covers all view into the Neo-Void but whenever someone ventures into the Neo-Void they never ever EVER come back out alive, therefore it is recommended with the utmost certainty to NOT venture into the Neo-Void.

About two meters into the Neo-Void all electrical equipment ceases to function, also something else to note is that when one enters the Neo-Void their voices cannot be heard from the other side of the Neo-Void.

Two adventurers ventured into the Neo-Void before, their names were Catherine Gates and Martin de Lyon. Their identities and lives were unknown as the only detail known about them is their trip into the Neo-Void and their names. Before they stepped into the Neo-Void both of them mentioned how they felt a "strange cold heat" (the meaning of which is currently unknown however some people think they were just miscommunicating a more "advanced" form of tepidity but this theory is very criticized due to it's lack of detail also it is still unconfirmed) after they stepped foot into the Neo-Void they messaged their friends who were standing outside of the Neo-Void waiting for them how they saw nothing but pitch blackness and a dense fog, they were never heard from again.

Entities

According to many reports there are very large populations of Smilers, Skin-Stealers, Facelings, Black Guards (rumored), Clumps, Death Moths, and Wretches, smaller populations of Reviooks and Skin-Givers have been reported as well.

Mysteriously, the Memory Worm seems to frequent this level much more than many other levels plus it is one of the only entities that is able to keep it's color here and not turn monochromatic, this evidence has led many to believe that Level 1038 was once actually non-monochromatic and was the birthplace of the Memory Worm before an unknown force turned the level monochromatic. The theory would also account for why some random objects (approximately 1 in 2 thousand) are non-monochromatic.

Colonies and Outposts

There are currently no documented colonies/outposts in Level 1038 however it is rumored that somewhere within the level two colonies are active yet their presence is still unconfirmed as of recently but several expeditions are being planned to find them.

The Black Citadel

  • A colony that is rumored to live on the outskirts of the level and within the Neo-Void (debated).
  • The people of the colony are rumored to protect the Neo-Void, it is also said that the reason that they supposedly reside within the Neo-Void is that they learned how to coexist with it but even this is heavily debated.
  • The people of the colony are rumored to be hostile to wanderers who wander to close to the Neo-Void.
  • There is currently no estimate of how many people may be residing within the colony but some estimates of 12 - 26 have been thrown around.
  • It's said that the people of the colony have evolved to survive within the level so consequently they are rumored to have became monochromatic just like the level they reside within
  • It's rumored that they're currently in a war against Kajekhte
  • The residents of the colony are called Black Guards

Kajekhte

  • A colony that is rumored to live within seven houses in the level.
  • The residents of the colony apparently speak an unknown language, however many have compared the language to many Central Asian languages.
  • Their main goal is to presumably eliminate The Black Citadel at all costs, it is unknown why they supposedly strive to do so.
  • Allegedly they are friendly to any wanderers that seek to eliminate The Black Guards as well.
  • They are rumored to be willing to trade with wanderers but are supposedly hesitant to do so.
  • Many believe that the colony houses 22 - 37 residents.
  • It's believed that they're in a war against the Black Guards

Entrances and Exits

Entrances

  • Entering a monochromatic door on Level 0, Level 3, Level 4, and Level 9 may lead one here.
  • If you head far enough in one direction in Level 9 there is a 20% chance of the level turning monochromatic the further you venture until you arrive in Level 1038.
  • Entering /M0N0 on any terminal in the backrooms will transport you to Level 1038.
  • Supposedly if you die with all black/white clothing on in a completely white/black room you have a 2.8% chance to respawn in the level but it is currently unconfirmed.
  • If you hear grasshoppers/crickets, birds chirping, or other sounds that are commonly heard in suburban neighborhoods at night in Level 6 then walk towards the sound(s) for approximately 12 seconds and turn around behind you, there should be a door, open the door and you will arrive in Level 1038.

Exits

  • If you close your eyes and think about the beauty of color heavily when you open your eyes you have an 80% chance to arrive in a non-monochromatic level.
  • Going through any colored door will transport you to a random level.
  • It is rumored that there's a small chance that if you walk around in the Neo-Void long enough you will be transported to Level 6 but this highly unlikely and it's heavily suggested that you don't.
  • If you die in the level there's a considerably high chance that you could spawn in Level 1, Level 6, or Level 9.]
  • If you enter any completely black door there's a small chance you could spawn in Level 0.7 therefore it's highly recommended to not enter any black doors on the level.
  • If you enter any Victorian style door it will either lead you to Level 0.3.
