Level 26, also known as "Otherworldly" or "Suburban Household", resembles a labyrinthine, 1980s urban household that extends possibly millions of kilometers, however, it is currently unknown how expansive Level 26's size truly is, due to the layout's confusing and often non-linear geometry1. Level 26's architecture is comprised of many long, narrow hallways and numerous segmented chambers linked to one another. The house is described as having a similar design to Level 0. For example, the walls are made of concrete and covered in wallpaper that has the same mono-yellow aesthetic; the carpet is almost always in perfect condition and appears to have been used most of the time, but it is still very dusty and usually beige, green, or gray with many patterned designs; the ceiling is made of plaster and concrete, giving it an ivory hue, and the ceiling lights are fluorescent light fixtures. Despite fluorescent lighting across the majority of the level, there are still some spots that remain dark. Wanderers should avoid certain regions since entities are likely to be present. Level 26's darker areas are occasionally damaged and exhibit claw marks. These claw marks might be from Hounds; however, this is unconfirmed.

The atmosphere in Level 26 is eerie, to say the least, with the space illuminated by flickering lights that cast ominous shadows across the furnishings. The halls are narrow and claustrophobic, with the occasional room serving as a respite between the interminable passageways. Ceiling vents can also be found; they give the level a chilly atmosphere, comfortable enough for anyone to stay, though the same cannot be said for the darker rooms, as the vents there are, for some odd reason, colder than the rest of the level.

Level 26 also shares similarities with Level 0. As mentioned, rooms are of similar size and layout, while hallways are narrow and enclosed, around two meters to half a meter wide, with some requiring one to crouch or walk sideways through them, due to the odd ceiling height; sometimes hallways may be completely inaccessible. Hallways may sometimes be obscured by objects and furniture, posing obstacles for wanderers. The design elements of this level include random doorways, stairways, and hallways that are compact and hazardous to navigate. The architecture of Level 26 is confusing and nonsensical, as the overall structure is full of anomalies and oddities, with hallways that lead to dead ends, doors that lead into walls, and rooms that seem to overlap and intersect with each other in impossible ways. The houses on this level appear to be stitched together, with mismatched walls and floors that create a surreal and unsettling atmosphere. But of course, this is and has always been the nature of The Backrooms.

26-1

The rooms are often sizable spaces that can be expected to look similar to various rooms found in typical homes, such as bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, and dining rooms, among others. Strangely, there have been no reports of bathrooms in Level 26.

The following offers an incomplete list of architectural variations within Level 26.

  • The Empty Rooms

These rooms are almost completely devoid of furniture, with just carpet and mono-yellow wallpaper. The rooms are vacant and offer a solitary, isolating feel. There are a few ornamental objects, like paintings and flower pots with the flowers notably absent. There are a few furniture pieces that may be present, since they are frequently those that are strictly necessary and desired in these particular rooms, such as bedrooms where the only piece of furniture would be a bed.

  • The Decorated Rooms

In direct contrast to "The Empty Rooms", these rooms contain a large amount of furniture and ornamental oddments scattered along the floor, on tables, and sometimes adhered to the walls. These items are arranged in such a way that the space appears disorganized, making it difficult for individuals to locate a different area in the absence of a vantage point.

  • The Messy Rooms

These rooms are primarily damaged, derelict, and unclean, with the furniture and decorative items in the room being spread out and abandoned, making it appear as if the room has not been cleaned or organized in a long time. Though of course, it never was clean to begin with. The majority of food and drink present are often expired or somehow poisonous. Entities are known to frequently lurk in these rooms.

Many pieces of furniture and other items are arranged and adorned throughout the space; these pieces of furniture and other items date from the era of the 1980s or perhaps much earlier. Many things at this level can also include physically impossible connections. These may include a chair with no legs, with the seat floating an appropriate distance above the ground, a table standing on the wall, and paintings with the paint and canvas separated by more than a few feet, among others. Attempting to interact with these "glitched" items will result in immediately no-clipping into any one of the Negative Levels. Plant pots, chairs, wall lamps, paintings, and other items in the rooms can also appear in the hallway. There are also bookcases, with the books on them having various strange and nonsensical titles (examples include "A Delicious Hallway", "[INSERT TITLE HERE]", "Do Not Not Not Not Not Not Not Not Read Me", "I'm Not a Book, I'm An Entity", and "Aieehghhdkkeief aldl"; there are also several titles in alternate and unknown languages). Some of the pages are also entirely transparent and blank, without any text or illustrations. There is a theory that, if read for a long enough time, these books can take one to The End, although this has been dismissed on the grounds of being pure speculation.

26-2

The residence on Level 26 appears to be a composite of many houses sewn together unexpectedly, resulting in numerous segmented rooms and hallways with unclear designs, bizarre architecture with no function, and another building that rises plainly. It also results from doors and hallways that lead nowhere but to walls. Some corridors are also exceedingly small and unsafe to descend, since they may lead to dangerous locations. Level 26 also has a stairway running up that looks identical to the other stairs, and because it repeats, the house appears to have an unlimited number of floors. The downstairs section will not lead back to the suburban house however, it will lead to Level 26.1 or Level 27.

Many items are present inside Level 26, such as flashlights, bottles of Almond Water and Liquid Pain, tins of Backshroom Soup, cans of Moth Jelly, and normal food without anomalous properties. All of these can be found stocked in fridges and kitchens throughout this level. Other objects, such as Level Keys, can be found in other locations. Wi-Fi is available occasionally as well. They are most commonly found inside rooms.

The Outside

Level-26-1

One of the most remarkable aspects of Level 26 is the presence of windows spread around the level. Most of these windows are simply Entity 2; needless to say, you should not open them, because of their disastrous consequences. However, some windows are not part of Entity 2, and can take one to "The Outside". This outdoor environment, however, is unlike any other level of the Backrooms, as it mimics The Frontrooms exactly, except for a permanent blue mist, similar to The Whisper. The Outside appears to be a vast landscape of trees (Sequoiadendron giganteum) and grass (Poa pratensis)2. There is also a path surrounded by blue mist and a massive forest. The pathway is made of stone (a common Frontrooms geological material) that randomly twists and bends, occasionally generating useless loops and curls. Because of this aspect, wanderers on the outside are likely to become lost.

The forest contains dangerous entities that must be avoided at all costs. The entities don't seem to be affected by the blue mist, but rather, it seems to give them additional strength. It is best to stay away from The Outside, but if you must go there, stay on the path. Finding an enormous building with an open window will return you to the suburban house. Since The Outside appears to be the most dangerous part of Level 26, there isn't much information available about it at the moment. Many explorers who visited The Outside have gone missing, and only a small number of explorers have managed to survive and return with photographs of The Outside. Currently, The Outside is being investigated and researched for further information.

Entities

Level 26 contains a large number of entities, with Windows being the most prevalent type. In addition to these, there are also Hounds, Smilers, and Skin-Stealers at this level. Although Wretches may be detected in the house's darker parts, they don't seem hostile towards wanderers.

Colonies And Outposts

As of now, no colonies nor outposts exist within Level 26, although some ruined camps with rotting corpses of wanderers, rusted machinery, and broken furniture may be found inside the rooms, indicating colonies may have been previously present. As of January, 13, 2026, the information about these camps' origin and history remains unknown.

Entrances And Exits

Exits
[]

  • Certain stairways may lead to The Attic, Level 26.1, or Level 27.
  • Certain wooden doors (often out of place) will transport one to Level 42.
  • If the outside will suddenly turn crimson, exiting through any windows will lead to Level 93.
  • Certain hallways may lead to Level 193.
  • Taking items from this level and leaving through any previous exits can lead to Level 955.
  • Wandering through The Outside for an extended period will eventually cause one's surroundings to fade into The Whisper.

Footnotes

1. Similar to Level 0, Level 26's physical space is non-Euclidean; that is, traveling in one direction may not lead in that direction, and you may find yourself having gone in a loop without having turned at any point.

2. Soil bacteria are notably absent, and nitrogen levels are at an average for North American grasslands. It is unknown how plant life prospers here, with the lack of sunlight and strange, invariable weather conditions. Does Level 26 have a nitrogen cycle? Perhaps we shall never know.
