Level 263 is the 264th level of the Backrooms, which is also commonly referred to as the “Metallurgical Complex“ due to its industrial and metallic environment.

General Description[]

Winterlvl5

An image of Level 263.

Winterlvl5

Level 263 takes on the form of a semi-run-down set of factories that expand for about ~ 10 miles (16 km) in total length. The factories are all interconnected with one another, with no actual exit to the outdoors.

Each of the factories has different settings and atmospheric qualities; for example, one of the factories can have more dense fog, while another can have less oxygen and an increased amount of other chemicals. Some of the chemicals that were documented consist of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and carbon monoxide. Despite these chemicals being relatively dangerous, there isn’t a heavy percentage of them in the air, as it mostly contains oxygen, so the effects of these chemicals are limited.

A majority of this level is severely run down, but there are portions of this level with properly functioning machinery like the electrical system and other kinds of industrial maintenance. Portions of this level don't have any lighting and usually require some sort of light source, like a flashlight or lantern, to be visible. On the other hand, some parts of the functioning machinery seem to be operating on their own without any interference or human interaction, but at some points there could be certain malfunctions, which ultimately make the entirety of the level more and more dangerous depending on the malfunction that occurs.

Malfunction Events[]

The Steam Input Malfunction is one of the safest kinds of malfunctions to have been documented. This usually only occurs with steam pipes being clogged or breaking, which causes steam to burst out of the pipe it is in, whether it is a singular pipe or a complex of pipes with steam. Within a couple of minutes, the area where the malfunction happened would be encased with steam, making the area relatively dangerous to be around, especially since the steam tends to be relatively denser and thicker. Due to the steam’s density and thickness, it can cause effects like nausea and trouble breathing for any kind of wanderer, no matter their health condition. No images are currently taken of this phenomenon.

Winterlvl2

The only documented photograph of the Gear Surges event. Taken seconds before the gears fully bursted.

Winterlvl2

Gear Surges are a more dangerous type of malfunction that only happens with hyperactive or overheating gear systems. Parts of the machinery that require gear systems to function will end up overheating completely at random, no matter the condition, which causes the gears to speed up their turning processes. Due to how fast they can end up spinning, the gears end up causing miniature explosions around them that don't do any destruction to the place around them, but they are ultimately dangerous mainly because they can release metal projectiles like nails, bolts, pipe parts, Small gear parts, etc. The rate at which these projectiles are shot is the equivalent of a gunshot, which ultimately can cause severe injuries to wanderers if they aren’t sheltered or protected by some heavy or stable object.

Winterlvl1

Winterlvl1

Meltdown is the most dangerous malfunction or phenomenon that has been documented so far. For this specific malfunction to occur, the level would have to have multiple surges in some sort of chemical system that consists of more dangerous kinds of chemicals, like reactors. During this event, the lights in the level will start flashing red, alarms will sound from an unknown source, windows will automatically close and will be blocked off, and the wanderer will gain a slight speed boost. Shortly after the event begins, the intercoms above will activate and display the message:

THE MELTDOWN HAS BEGUN. REPEAT, THE MELTDOWN HAS BEGUN. EVACUATE [Specified Location] IMMEDIATELY. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.
The location of the event will be completely randomized and the same message will display itself to everyone. After the message is read and the intercom shuts off, a loud ambience of crashing metal objects and explosions will be heard in the far distance. A few minutes in, smoke will start flooding the entirety of the level. This smoke is far more dense than regular fog’s density, which makes it incredibly hard to breathe in. Around 10–15 minutes into this event, other mechanical systems begin to malfunction, known as a multi-malfunction phenomenon, or M.M.P. for short. The best option to avoid this meltdown event is to get as far away as possible from the epicenter of where the event was documented. The closer the wanderer is to the epicenter, the lower the chance of survival since the smoke and fire will spread at an alarming speed.

Entities[]

Despite the level being considered a Class 3, there is a slightly increased amount of entities that have been reported at this level. There have been confirmed reports of Deathmoths. Smilers, Clumps, and a level-exclusive entity, Radiator-C. These entities are not very rare to come across, but the level-exclusive entity is way more difficult to come across.

Radiator-C[]

Winterlvl4

An attempted illustration of the entity. Taking a photo of this entity would be close to impossible.

Winterlvl4

Radiator-C is a toxic humanoid entity standing at around 7 feet. It appears to be shrouded in a lime-ish green toxic cloak, which gives off toxic radiation. The radiation appears to be the element carbon, but in some sort of poisonous form. It is also how the entity got its name, Radiator-C.[1]

This entity appears to be quite territorially aggressive towards anyone, including other entities, and only attacks when someone enters a certain proximity to it.

Entrances and Exits[]

Entrances[]

  • Regularly noclipping out of Level 57 has a slight chance of sending wanderers here.
  • Going up a stairwell on Level 106 has a slight chance of sending wanderers here.
  • Entering a factory labeled "The Complex" on Level 11 can send wanderers here.

Exits[]

  • Managing to noclip through a locked window during the Meltdown Phenomenon will send wanderers to Level 873.
  • Noclipping through a reactor has a slight chance of sending wanderers to Level 423.
  • Passing out in the Fog during the Steam Input Malfunction has a slight chance of sending wanderers to Level 459.
  • Tripping through a staircase in Level 427 leads one here.

Footnotes

  1. The C stands for Carbon, meaning it’s full documented name would be Radiator-Carbon.
