Another place lit by the nocturnes itself.
"Welcome to the serenity."
General Overview[]
Level 267, also frequently nicknamed by many as the Voyage of the Nocturnes, is placed as the Backrooms' 268th level. It takes in the resemblance of multiple, ruined structures seemingly constructed during medieval times all scattered about the vast expanse of an archipelago suspended around an endless ocean. The ruins within the level constantly vary, but usually consist with crumbling and dilapidated stone walls, collapsed archways, and multiple fallen towers, sometimes being so tall they could easily tower around the height of a mountain. In addition, many other fallen ruins such as bridges, more archways, and towers have been reported to float amongst the waters, making them rather dangerous to swim through, though can serve as a raft for easier exploration around the level. The ruins that float around the waters are noticeably corroded, dilapidated, and weathered due to their continuous direct exposure to the water for multiple decades, making them very weak, yet somewhat "stable." As the consequences from the deep corrosion, the ruins find themselves to now be in a beyond-repair state of destruction and decay, with multiple walls and towers had been reduced to mere fragments, and a few of the remnants had developed multiple cracks or fissures within their structure.
The ruins which can be found across Level 267 are currently believed to be the antique remnants of a past medieval civilization which used to exist in Level 267, deduced by the architectural style the ruins have been built in, as it has been observed to be heavily influenced by stereotypical medieval design and aesthetics. The interior layout of the ruins is usually sparse, sporadic, and minimalist, with only a few rooms and hallways. The rooms themselves are mostly empty, with no furniture or decoration. One may also find water dripping from the gaps of the ceilings and walls. The air in the ruins are usually chilly, and filled of the scent of rotting wood. Rarely, one would may see the interior or placement of the ruins shift to other places or areas. The origins of the ruins are currently unknown, but it is believed that they date back many centuries upon the traces of weathering and corrosion. Some speculate that the ruins were once part of a great castle or fortress, while others believe that they may have been a temple or other religious structure. The exact era of the ruins is also unknown, but it is clear that they are from a time long before modern civilization.
In addition to the information of the ruins on land and in the waters, Level 267 is also home to a number of islands. These islands are usually small, but they offer a different perspective on the ruins and the surrounding water bodies. The islands in Level 267 are usually small, often just a few meters in diameter, and are covered in ash blankets composed of human bones. The vegetation on the islands are varied and usually withered, that includes snags and thorn vines tangled on the cliff surface on some islands. Due to the continuation absence of sunlight, the plants on the islands have adapted to the low light conditions, with many of them developing a pale green hue that seems to glow in the darkness. In addition, most of the leaves of the vegetation in Level 267 are usually thin and delicate, and it is believed that this adaption reduces the amount of surface area that is exposed to the low light, allowing the vegetation to conserve energy and resources.
The large water body in Level 267 stretches out as far as the eye can see, and its waters are clear and clean. There are several theories about the origin of the water body in this level. Some speculate that it is the result of a massive flooding event that occurred many years ago, while others believe it may be a remnant of a vast underground lake or river system. There are even some who believe that the water body may be a portal to another dimension, and that the ruins and islands in the level are actually part of an ancient and mysterious civilization from The Frontrooms. The pH level of the water is quite low, making it highly acidic and dangerous to any living organisms that may enter it. However, humans are an exception, and it is believed to be only harmful for other animals. The temperature of the water is quite cold due to the lack of sunlight and the constant exposure to the cold air. One who enters the waters might feel chilly and uncomfortable. Fog is frequently observed at areas near the waters.
The air in Level 267 is damp and musty, with a distinct odor of decay and mildew. The air is also noticeably cooler than in many other levels, likely due to the large bodies of water that cover much of the area. The surrounding air is often still and quiet, with no noticeable breezes or any circulation or movement. The air in this level is also often filled with dust and ash from the ash blankets on the islands, which can exacerbate breathing difficulties for those who spend an extended period of time in this level. It is often described as feeling heavy and dense, as if it were pressing down on those who enter the level. The lack of sunlight and constant exposure to moisture and water bodies in the level contribute to the high humidity in the air, creating an overall atmosphere of desolation.
The continuation presence of moonlight is the only natural light source that exists in Level 267. The level is often bathed in a soft, pale light that appears to emanates from the moon. The moonlight in this level is often described as ethereal and haunting, and the light is often dim and diffuse, casting long shadows and highlighting the decayed ruins and ash-covered islands. It is also a helpful source of illumination for wanderers navigating and investigating the entire level. Furthermore, despite there is a presence of a "moon" in the level, none other celestial bodies such as stars could be found in the level.
Addendum[]
Two wandered through the endless corridors of a run down medieval style building, one in a blue shirt and black trousers, the other in plain black and with a yellow hat. The two men were chattering along the way as their voices echoed through the corridors.
| |
??? |
So who are you again? |
Lancelot |
I am Lancelot—— Lancelot Chen. Thank you for saving me, I literally fell through the well of the elevator and lost consciousness. If you were not here, I would have died. Did you see anyone else with me when you found me? |
??? |
Huh? Were there anyone else? All I saw was you, unfortunately. |
Lancelot |
Oh no… This can't be… I will find him afterwards… |
??? |
Who are you talking about anyways? I’ve heard news all around the Backrooms. Maybe I could help you with something. |
Lancelot |
Thank you. His name is Pintora, we were in an elevator until everything blacked out and the floor gave way. Before everything faded into darkness, I could clearly see a human figure other than him—— I just hope that he is alright. |
Xanth |
Sorry to disappoint you, but I have not heard about anything like that recently. Maybe you could find him one day, but only if you can get out of here safely. By the way, I almost forgot to introduce myself. My name’s Xanth. You know, that- xanth means yellow. It was a pleasure to meet you. |
Lancelot |
Me too. So what are you doing in this torn building? |
Xanth |
Basically, I work for M.E.G, and I discovered this level, so I am trying to make a report by investigating this place. |
Lancelot |
What are your findings? |
Xanth |
Not much actually. I have only been here for two hours and all I could find is you and some old, ragged cloth on the cracked wooden floor… Do you know where that elevator that sent you here is? |
Lancelot |
No idea. Pintora and I mess around the Backrooms always, and I guess this time we screwed up… |
Xanth |
Oh, what a pity. So maybe you could come along with me for the rest of the journey, and help me find something useful here? I will reward you handsomely after I get all the money and fame when this level is confirmed. |
Lancelot |
Really!? I mean… Not that I care that much about the money… I just like to explore. Yep. That’s it. Exciting exploration~ |
Xanth |
It’s alright. Here, take this small dagger I have to defend yourself—— We wouldn’t know when the entities would ambush us. Take this bottle of almond water too. You are an experienced wanderer, right? |
Lancelot |
You can count on me. By the way, can you smell the rotten wood here? It’s weird. |
Xanth |
Not that much, but I can surely feel the breeze and the air getting colder. |
Lancelot |
That only means one thing, and that is we are closer to a large water body. |
Xanth |
That’s the most reliable comment I have heard from you so far, I guess you are good at this after all. |
Lancelot |
I know exactly what I am doing. Let’s just keep walking. |
Xanth |
There's a light in the distance, very dim though… |
Lancelot |
So this is a night level, I’ve been to a dozen of those before. |
Xanth |
Drawing a conclusion so fast? |
Lancelot |
What else could it be then? |
Xanth |
You have a point. At least there could finally be some fresh air once we get out of this building. |
Lancelot and Xanth steadily moved towards the dim glow of night sky, with occasional sounds of sketching as Xanth dropped notes about the level down on his notebook.
| |
Lancelot |
Finally! I feel like I haven’t been in an outdoor area for a few months already, in fact I think it is true. |
Xanth |
It is good to have some fresh air after we stayed in that stuffy corridor for a long time. |
Lancelot |
I agree with—— Woah! Back, back, back! It looks like it is a thousand feet from here. We will crash into the ground if we are not careful enough. I almost stepped out and kill myself - a really dumb move. We should be really cautious… |
Xanth |
Oh my… This place looks very weird. We are basically inside a building located at the mid-point of a spike-shaped hill. Nonetheless, it also looks like it could easily crumble... I really want to investigate the support structure of this, but I don’t think we are capable enough to do so. |
Lancelot |
I guess… Wait, look! There is a very long but dangling string ladder over there, maybe we could use that. |
Xanth |
That's a dangerous path to go down, and... it looks extremely new. I don’t know if this is a part of the level or if someone has been here already… |
Lancelot |
Why do you look upset? |
Xanth |
If this is a discovered level, then I don’t get money and fame, as simple as that. |
Lancelot |
We still need to find a way out anyways, right? |
Xanth |
Yeah… Let’s go down I guess… |
Lancelot |
Careful. Follow my pace and don’t step on my face. |
Xanth |
It is so high here. I am scared even if I know I’m not supposed to… Plus it is so dark. |
Lancelot |
Just get down already, we should get out of here as soon as possible! |
Xanth |
Alright, alright... Here goes nothing... |
It was an extremely long journey which took an hour or two before the two finally successfully get off to the bottom of the hill.
| |
Lancelot |
It looks like we are surrounded by an ocean, and the nearest island is miles away from us. Hmmm.... maybe we should try getting onto the top of the hill instead. |
Xanth |
No.... Please no… Aren’t there other ways? We just came down! |
Lancelot |
Oh, you mean like noclipping through that wall full of white dust over there? |
Xanth |
I’d rather try that than going up the ladder again. |
Lancelot |
Well… I guess it’s better than wasting our opportunity of being down here. Worth a try. |
Lancelot slowly approached the wall, then suddenly used all his strength to push on the wall, his body sinking into the wall as he did so, and soon he was out of sight. Xanth quickly followed, and everything went back to mold and silence.

Theories[]
Ever since the discovery of Level 267, many have started to create theories and hypotheses on Level 267. The following are the most popular and realistic theories that were proposed:
"The unusual anomaly of all time and space."
"The rules of the fifth dimension. A waltz of the combination."
One theory about Level 267 is that it is a place where time and space behave in unusual ways. This theory suggests that the level is a kind of pocket dimension, where the normal rules of physics do not apply. Some proponents of this theory speculate that the ruins and structures in Level 267 may not actually be from the medieval era at all, but instead, may be fragments of other time periods that have somehow become entangled in this pocket dimension.
Others believe that the level may contain portals or gateways to other dimensions or realities, which could explain why the architecture and geography seem to shift and change around explorers. Another aspect of this theory is that the level may be connected to other parts of the Backrooms in unusual ways. For example, some have suggested that the water bodies in the level may be connected to other levels or parts of the Backrooms, acting as a kind of conduit or portal between different areas.
"Or is it remnants of a past medieval era..."
"Eradicated from existence, reduced into dust that flows along the sea streams."
Another theory surrounding Level 267 is that it is the location of the lost city of Atlantis in the legends. According to this theory, the ruins and islands are the remnants of a highly advanced civilization that existed thousands of years ago. The theory suggests that the people of Atlantis possessed knowledge and technology that surpassed even our modern understanding.
Supporters of this theory point to the advanced architecture and design of the ruins, as well as the strange artifacts that have been discovered on the islands. They suggest that the people of Atlantis were able to harness the power of the water and the moon to create incredible structures and devices. They also believe that the presence of moonlight on the level is a sign of the ancient technology that still exists there.
However, skeptics of this theory argue that there is no concrete evidence to support the existence of Atlantis. They suggest that the legends and stories of Atlantis are simply myths and that the ruins and islands could be the remnants of any ancient civilization. They also point out that the strange artifacts discovered on the islands could be the result of natural processes or the activities of other explorers who have visited the area.
"Was it all just a mere dream?"
"Was it a virtual fantasy?"
"Was it all a fake utopia?"
One unique theory about Level 267 is that it is actually a manifestation of a collective dream state. While this theory is purely speculative and has no concrete evidence to support it, it is a quite popular theory in the Backrooms' community. According to this theory, the ruins, islands, and water bodies in the level are actually a projection of the subconscious minds of those who have entered the level.
The theory goes on to suggest that the medieval ruins in Level 267 are symbolic representations of the dreamers' past traumas and emotional struggles, while the islands represent their hopes, dreams, and desires. The water bodies, on the other hand, represent the collective unconscious, a vast reservoir of shared experiences and knowledge. The acidic and cold waters of the level are believed to represent the negative emotions and memories that have been repressed by the dreamers, while the moonlight represents the light of consciousness that is shining upon their hidden thoughts and feelings.
According to the theory, the reason why humans are not harmed by the acidic water is because they are not physically present in the level, but rather their subconscious minds are projecting their thoughts and emotions onto the environment. Furthermore, the theory suggests that the shifting and changing nature of the level is a reflection of the constantly evolving thoughts and emotions of the dreamers, and that the level itself is a living entity that is created and sustained by the collective unconscious.
"..."
"It is the time."
"Finally, release."
Another unique theory about Level 267 is that it represents a reflection of the afterlife, specifically the medieval concept of purgatory. According to this theory, the ruins and islands in the level are the remnants of a long-forgotten past medieval civilization that existed in The Frontrooms. When the people of this civilization passed away, their souls were trapped in a state of limbo between heaven and hell, that is, Level 267, where they were forced to atone for their sins before they could move on to their final destination.
The water bodies in Level 267 are proposed to represent the river Styx, which separates The Frontrooms from the underworld in Greek mythology. The islands covered in ash blankets composed of human bones symbolize the souls of the dead, who are stuck in purgatory until they have repented for their sins. The moonlight in the level represents the light of heaven, which shines down on the souls in purgatory, offering them hope and a glimpse of their ultimate destination.
According to this theory, the reason why the ruins are in such a state of disrepair is because they represent the sins and mistakes of the people who built them. As the souls in purgatory atone for their sins, the ruins crumble and decay, symbolizing the gradual release of the people from their past mistakes. The lack of sunlight and the cool, damp air in the level represent the difficulty and hardship of atoning for one's sins, while the low pH level of the water represents the cleansing and purification of the soul.
"A segment of the one."
Object §: Nocturne Shards[]
Object §, also known as Nocturne Shards are a type of rare and valuable ore that can be found deep within the islands of Level 267. These shards have a unique crescent moon shape and are dark and bluish purple, allowing them to glow with a soft, purplish light. It owns a jagged and irregular surface that can vary in size. The shards emit a constant, low-level light that can be used as an infinite light source, making them highly sought after by those who venture into the level. The light emitted by the shards is not particularly bright, but it is enough to allow for easy navigation in the darkness of the level.
Nocturne Shards are incredibly durable and resistant to damage. They can withstand high levels of pressure and impact, making them ideal for use in a variety of applications. Despite their toughness, they can be easily mined and extracted from the deep of the islands using specialized tools. Once extracted, the shards can be used in a variety of ways, including as a light source or as a decorative element in buildings and structures, making them highly sought after by explorers and traders in the Backrooms. One common use for it is in the creation of magical talismans and amulets.
The unique properties of Nocturne Shards have led many to speculate about their origin and purpose. Some believe that they are the remnants of a long-lost civilization that once inhabited the level, while others theorize that they were created through a natural process that is unique to the level. There are also those who believe that the shards are the result of a supernatural or otherworldly force, and that their properties are evidence of this.
"Leaving already?"
"No, not yet. You'll stay."

"The waters are traversing through the currents."
"You heard the night call along the breeze."
"Waves roar and crashes the nearby shore."
"While the night whispers and caress the sand."
"The ocean brings the restful moonlight along the echoing voyage."
The Voyage[]
The Voyage is an event that rarely occurs in Level 267. Before The Voyage, the waves are often small and gentle, with a slight ripple that spreads across the surface of the water. They are frequently described as delicate and serene, with a rhythmic ebb and flow that is calming to observe. However, the waves will become more intense and turbulent, especially during periods of the event. The waters during the event will turn acidic and will corrode one's skin even at a slightest touch.
During the event, the waves in Level 267 will grow taller and more violent. They can rise up to several meters in height, crashing against the ruined walls and islands with a powerful force, causing parts of the islands along with remnants of the ruins to collapse, or even causing them to sink into the water. The sound of the waves during these periods can be deafening, with a loud roar that echoes throughout the level. The waves can also become more dangerous during these periods, with strong currents and undertows that can pull unsuspecting wanderers out to sea. Furthermore, the fog in the level would be thicker than normal during the voyage.
The waves can also change the current's direction quickly and unexpectedly, making it difficult to keep a steady course if traveling by boat or other means. The currents in the water also become stronger during the storm, pulling objects and living beings along with them. The water can move at an alarming speed, making it difficult to swim against the current or stay afloat. Even objects that are usually stable, such as the ruins and islands, can be dislodged and moved by the strong currents. In addition, during the event, the surrounding air will flow quickly, thus creating strong winds.
"We may subside, but we will never truly end."
"The receding waves will soon return to the edge of shore."
"..."
"..."
"The end?"
"Was it... the end?"
"No, it was always not."
"The end of the voyage leads to the start of the nocturne."
"..."
"The full moon has risen upon the celestial sky."
"The moonlight went dimmer, and the moon itself seemed to come alive."
"The air grew heavy and still, and the water began to stir upon the currents."
"Whispers echoed through the ruins as the Nocturnal began."
"The ashes from the blankets swayed upon the violent storm,"
"The Nocturne had begun, the deadzone is now upon us."
The Nocturnal[]
The Nocturnal is a rare and deadly event that occurs in Level 267 once in a full moon. During the Nocturnal event, the moon will slowly rise into the sky, and its size and brightness will begin to grow larger and larger, until it becomes a massive, glowing sphere that dominates the entire level. The moonlight that emanates from the giant moon is blindingly bright and intense, illuminating every corner of the entire level. At the same time, the temperature in the level will rapidly rise, quickly becoming unbearably hot and scorching due to the gigantic "moon" is enveloped by a layer of plasma with intense heat, similar to the existence of the "Sun" in the The Frontrooms.
The moonlight itself becomes dangerous during this event. As it grows brighter and brighter, it emits a deadly radiation that can burn the skin upon direct contact. The light from the moon is very intense that it can penetrate through the walls and towers of the ruins, seeping every corners of the entire level. The moon appears to be so close that one could almost reach out and touch it, though doing so would result in immediate harm. When direct skin contact is made with the moonlight, it immediately burns and blisters, causing excruciating pain and permanent scarring. However, plants in the level are excluded. If one is in contact of the moonlight for too long, they will be burnt into ashes. It is proposed that the following hazard is the reason that ash blankets composed of human bones are covering the islands.
In addition to the moon, the water bodies in the level become turbulent and dangerous. The waves grow in more height and strength, crashing onto the shores of the islands and the ruins with a more deafening roar than the waves during The Voyage event, causing multiple islands to collapse and swept away along the violent current. One who receives a direct blow from the waves would be thrown several meters away, and could sustain serious injuries or even be killed upon impact with the ruins or islands. Additionally, due to the extreme temperature, the waters in the entire level will be boiling hot, causing injuries even at a small contact. The wind in the level would also be incredibly strong, with gusts reaching speeds of up to 100 km/h, causing one to hardly stand still. The wind could potentially knock down weaker structures and cause debris to fly around dangerously. In addition to the physical hazards, the entire level would also become incredibly loud during this nocturnal event, with the sound of crashing waves and howling wind filling the air.
Due to the extreme hazards present during The Nocturnal event, it is strongly advised that anyone who finds themselves in Level 267 during a full moon seek shelter immediately. The ruins themselves may provide some protection from the wind and waves, but they are not entirely safe from collapse or damage. One may be buried alive when the ruins collapse due to the strong winds. In addition, the ash-covered islands may be even more dangerous during this time, as the ash will become more wet and slippery, making it difficult to maintain footing.
"The nocturne may be over, but the lifeless still linger on."
"As the night draws to a close, the luminaries fade faraway."
"Until next time, the celestial will still rise upon the neverland."
"Shadows casted upon will soon return back behind time."
"There was never an end. The nocturne will still repeat again and again."
"Now, a nocturne will soon sail along the voyage... A formation of the celestial cycle."
"Soon, it will...."
