Level 277 > |
Planet 276 is the 277th level of the Backrooms.
Planet 276, informally termed as "Borealis", resembles a celestial body with an extensive diameter of ~14,000 kilometers, with its general composition assimilating it to a regular planet; its weak, yet notable gravitational pull of 6.5 m/s2 forces it into a geode-like shape, similarly to Terra from The Frontrooms. The level is defined to have a substantial mass of 6.5 x 1024 kg, and exhibits a density of 5,515 kg/m³. It has also been observed to quickly rotate at a notable velocity of 1670 km/h.
The level's surface area depicts a vast, cold-ridden landscape composed by 65% landmass and 35% water, majority of which remains entirely frozen due to the level's conditions. As for the distribution of the level's biomes, 50% of the level's surface is occupied by rather large regions of polar deserts, with a great majority of them being covered in fragile ice fields or ice caps; another 15% remains covered by regions that are barren, jagged, and rocky, littered with a variety of protruding stone mountains; and an additional 25% of the level's surface encompasses colossal oceans frozen by the level's temperatures, where strong sheets of perfectly smooth ice can be often observed, giving these areas a surreal atmosphere. Furthermore, various solitary icebergs and ice floes of a relatively large scale may also be located in many regions, most particularly near certain waterlocked deserts. Regarding the terrain's formation, it is known to be wildly variable and irregular in nature, with frequent land elevations continuously scattered across major regions of the continent Planet 276 composes; rough icy hills, frozen valleys and anything in-between is a guaranteed sight in Planet 276. Additionally, the average recorded height interval of the terrain is estimated around 400 meters, given the height specifc mountain ranges can reach.
Regarding Planet 276's spatial properties, a thorough examination of its surroundings has shown an orbital connection to Level 276.1. It has an orbital diameter of approximately 150,000 kilometers, and the level completes one full orbit every 30 days. Planet 276 completes its orbit around in a counterclockwise direction when viewed from above the plane of their orbits. In addition, the orbit is also stable and synchronized with the rotation on its axis, resulting in consistent day and night cycles in the level. The level's gravity is measured at 6.5 m/s2, which is approximately 35% less than the gravity of the terrestrial planet Terra found in The Frontrooms. As a result, wanderers in the level might experience lighter gravitational force compared to other levels.
The planetary structure of the level is commonly characterized by a very diverse composition, with the lithosphere of Planet 276 encompasses 40% rocky and 60% icy components that forms forms the outermost layer. The level also exhibits tectonic activities that features eight major plates, each with irregular boundaries. Internally, it comprises multiple layers consisting of icy strata, rocky formations, and various subterranean features. For the chemical composition of the level, it is comprised of 25% frozen water, 35% minerals, and 40% other celestial materials.
The atmosphere of Planet 276 possesses a thickness of 50 kilometers that provides a crucial envelope that influences the surrounding climatic conditions on the level's surface. Within the level's atmospheric layer, there is a distinct, thick ozone layer that is 5 kilometers that takes on a distinctive role in trapping and redistributing internal heat generated within the level's structure. It also plays the role in protecting the level's surface by shielding against harmful ultraviolet rays and potential cosmic radiation in Level 276.1. On top of that, it has an ozone concentration of 0.01 parts per million (ppm).

Daily Report, 5th March, 2031
Responsible Person(s): Dr. Silver (1894-1941), Dr. Taylor (1911-1941), Dr. Lancelot Chen (2008-)
Introduction:
This report aims to express factual information about the climate of Planet 276 owing to the recent extreme weather incidents taking place. All older documents has been retrieved, reclassified, and rearranged. The following information originates from older reports ranging from year 1936 to year 2030, and the data has been all reviewed before being displayed.
Settlement:
Planet 276, compared to any other levels that are humanly possible to perch in, is considered one of the worst locations owing to its gruesome climate conditions. The severe coldness led to numerous challenges during one's attempt to settle in the level; common diseases like frostbite and hypothermia takes place often. Fortunately, no lifeforms can survive the insufferable environment of Planet 276, and hence the trivial probability of outbreaks of pathogens is negligible.
To ensure sustainable survivability on Planet 276, one should bring along heavy heat-insulation gears and a self-sufficient supply of heat; a controlled nuclear fusion torch could do the job easily, and they are easily obtainable at a majority of M.E.G. outposts at an affordable price. Other alternatives includes spontaneous combustion pebbles (SCP) and internally controlled oxygenated nonilnium (I.C.O.N. or O2Nn). Please be minded that the aforementioned two chemicals are highly reactive with oxygen in the air and only a small amount should be exposed to the air at a time, or an explosion could take place, leading to undesired outcomes.
To locate a suitable dorm within Planet 276, one may make use of the natural resources like small caves found within patches. Wood is available throughout the level by cutting down the trees, but the heat insulation done by woody material is poor. If one must use wood to construct a hideout, it is recommended to paint it with any type of heat insulation paint. The recommended heat insulation paint is nonilnium paint, which do not freeze or boil in extreme temperatures, and can be affixed using just ultraviolet light, and removed using infrared light. The paint works almost as well as vacuum, forming a complete air barrier, trapping the heat inside one's stay place.
Please be minded that there is almost no food supply on Planet 276, so any kind of long-term settlement is ultimately unsuitable to take place on Planet 276. The cost of setting up any form of personal farms are very high, so it is not advised to do so. One should leave the level as soon as possible upon arrival as there are no obvious reasons to stay for the level.
Climate:
Planet 276 has a day-night cycle similar to polar regions, with a 6-month day and 6-month night; each day is exactly 24 hours, and a year is 365 days.
The level possesses a freezing temperature of -8°C to -43°C. The lowest recorded temperature is -48.8°C by Dr. Taylor on year 1941. However, such number has not been met since then. Nevertheless, the extremely cold weather imposes a constant life-threatening situation to wanderers, regardless of the year.
The air humidity of Planet 276, similar to most polar climate regions, is extremely low, with a maximum of 17%. To prevent dehydration, one must always bring sufficient amount of fresh water. The snow on Planet 276 is free from pathogens due to the weather condition, and hence it is also safe to consume after melting.
The poor weather condition hinders the development of any communities. According to existing reports, on average, over 450 blizzards of difference magnitude had taken place in the past year (2030). However, the M.E.G. still managed to set up a permanent outpost near the spawn on year 2026, and it operates smoothly until now. For any kind of survival assistance, one may report to the station. A satellite has been launched into Level 276.1 such that within a radius of 2000km near the spawn, the wanderer can easily locate the outpost by their BackOS system.
Conclusion:
It is entirely not recommended to stay in Planet 276, and if, for any reasons, one have to traverse through Planet 276, one should:
1) Bring along sufficient heat insulation clothing and heat generation equipment
2) Possess a strong and durable body
3) Report to the outpost for assistance upon emergencies
4) Avoid leaving the outpost for too far

Today has been extra cold, with an astonishing -48.8°C. The humidity of the level seem to decline with the temperature linearly, and now it is at a new low of 3%. Our men are facing grave danger, as we have very limited heat supply, and the snow melters cannot work as effectively, owing to the consistent snowstorm taking place almost every where.
However, a great news suggests that a group of M.E.G. operatives will finally arrive at our location before 10 March, which is an excellent news. The only food we have left is dried beans and compressed beef, which are very hard to consume in the everlasting extreme winter. I've heard that the headquarters have planned to install a geothermal-powered generator, which is quite surprising given that they were extremely stingy on everything.
Nevertheless, I'm grateful still being alive, drinking a cup of hot coffee in front of my desk, not having to worry about the dreadful snowscape.

Attached File #2: Object Chi "Spontaneous Combustion Pebbles"

Working Principle
Object Chi, with the given name of Spontaneous Combustion Pebbles (S.C.P), is a kind of vital daily necessity found throughout the backrooms. An instance of Object Chi takes the shape of a yellow, glowing piece of pebble, with smooth corners and semi-transparent surface; its appearance is often compared to topaz, a type of gemstone originating from The Frontrooms.
Upon contact with oxygen, the object releases heat readily at a varying rate, and the rate of heat release increases linearly with the difference in temperature. This results in the object retaining its surface temperature at a fixed temperature of 47°C, providing a heat source in many useful occasions.
S.C.P is used up during the process as it releases energy over time. It will undergo a chemical change, releasing oxygen gas in the process. The chemical energy reserve in an S.C.P can last up to 4 hours, before reacting its masses completely and turn into inactive S.C.P. To reactivate the S.C.P again, one would have to heat it strongly with fire with the presence of oxygen.
Usages
1) S.C.P Dust Heater Bags:
S.C.P Dust Heater Bags is similar to old-styled warm bags, but with a different content, that is - the dust created from multiple S.C.P samples. To activate the heater bags, one will only have to vigorously rub the bag inside their palms. The following action would foster chemical reaction, facilitating the aforementioned effect. The heating effect can keep one warm for a long period of time, that varies on the number of the S.C.P samples.
2) S.C.P Generators:
S.C.P Generators are power generators working by S.C.P dust mingling with pure water. S.C.P dust react vigorously with the liquid to release heat, and the heat is collected and transformed into other energy forms such as electrical energy as the most common. During the process, a large amount of hydrogen will be released, which can be collected as the byproduct for other usages. S.C.P Generators are also gradually replacing any other traditional ways of obtaining hydrogen as it is proved to be effective and cost-efficient. Most M.E.G. outposts have been equipped with S.C.P Generators by the year of 2030.
3) S.C.P Weaponry and Explosives:
S.C.P, under high purity and concentration, can be used as an explosive. The characteristic of any S.C.P Weaponry is that they radiates and reflects extreme heat in a certain radius, and do not release any toxic gases like most traditional explosives do. Using explosives made from the following object has been proved to be an effective way to fight off entities. Compared to other weapons, S.C.P Weaponry are rather ineffective in terms of killing, but becomes superior when the objective is to stun the target instead of slaughtering.

Attached File #3: Element Chi "Nonilnium"

Working Principle
Object Element Chi, also scientifically named as Nonilnium, named after its discoverer Walhëim Nonillus, is a soft metal element exclusively found within the Backrooms, with a atomic number of 291, albeit the sequence between that and the upper limit of the modern periodic table has not been found. As its atomic composition suggests, it should be theoretically extremely unstable and radioactive. However, Nonilnium has been found to not impose any threats to human health, and has a larger variety of usage in survival and industry.
Nonilnium is a Group II element, that consists of a lustrous and silvery-white soft metal, having a hardness on the Mohs scale of around 2.5., and is odorless. It is opaque to visible light, with no transparency or translucency. For its taste, Nonilnium is strictly forbidden for consumption, and thus, its taste is not known due to its extreme reactivity. Nonilnium has a relatively high density, comparable to that of lead, with a density of approximately 11 g/cm³. The element also has a melting point ranging from 1500 to 2000 degrees Celsius and a freezing point ranging from 2000 to 2500 degrees Celsius. The specific heat of Nonilnium is approximately 0.5 J/g°C, and it exhibits a dynamic viscosity slightly higher than that of iron.
Nonilnium has 2 stable isotopes, with the first one being Nn-727 and the second one being Nn-728. They distribute averagely throughout their masses, and their properties are very similar. In addition, Nonilnium is an excellent conductor of electricity, surpassing even copper in its conductivity, and displays weak magnetic properties at room temperature, however, becomes strongly paramagnetic especially when exposed to low temperatures. The element is also relatively malleable and ductile that has a degree of flexibility without significant brittleness.
The presence of Nonilnium can be proved by flame test. Flames passing though Nonilnium will turn into a darkened black color immediately, and the piece of nonilnium will gain heat vigorously before melting. During the process, sparkles of yellow flames can be seen dashing out of the test spot. Albeit the blackness produced, the flame burns significantly more brightly. This property is hence made used of to produce torches.
Nonilnium demonstrates excellent thermal conductivity, and is highly reactive to combustion and has a strong preference for quick and intense combustion processes. It reacts with oxygen vigorously upon contact, and releases a large amount of heat. Its reactive ability has been mobilized to produce energy by nuclear fusion and fission. Small amount of it can be install inside batteries, and if subtly used, can serve as a long-lasting non-renewable energy reserve. Due to its low activation cost, which is trivial amount of oxygen, Nonilnium has to be contain in vacuum under normal circumstances, and can be hover by using magnetic forces.
Nonilnium, given its extremely good mass-to-energy ratio, is fairly common to locate throughout the Backrooms. It can usually be found as ores underground in a majority of levels with a rocky foundation, like Level 7. One should be extremely cautious handling Nonilium, as 1 kilogram of Nonilnium has 60,000 times the potential energy of uranium with the same mass.

Formation of the Level
Around 2.4 billion years ago, equivalent to the Huronian glaciation times in the Frontrooms, a fragment of dimensional fabric fell free from The Broken, and landed into the Backrooms. The reason for the separation is fundamentally due to the broken colliding with another supermassive multiverse system, known as "The X-verse", which, according to sophisticated calculations, is around 2% the mass of the Broken itself.
Large amount of energy was released and some outer parts of the Broken shattered and fell off. This resulted in some fragments being caught in the multiversal forcefield of the Backrooms supercluster, and some levels are formed by the event, including Level 276, Level 7, Level 0 and Level 27. Some levels are destroyed in the process as a counter-effect, but in the end, the Backrooms received a net gain in the number of levels.
Planet 276 fell into, and is still at the outermost layer of the Backrooms multiverses. The level, influenced by the iced Frontrooms at that time, start forming itself into a large sphere of ice, with a warm inner core and a extremely thick atmosphere. The source of heat in the center is unknown, but it keeps the surface at a constant -20 to -70 degrees Celsius under all circumstances. At this point, the level is nothing but a giant rocky planet covered by a layer of snow and ice.
The formation of the level's climate was around 1.4 billion years ago, where a void wave event took place, and the strong wave current passed by the level with a small interval, create large amount of heat. The level is warmed up due to the heat, and it was heated up to the current temperature - that is -8 to -43 degrees Celsius. With the formation of organic substances, first instances of plant life took place, which was upkept until now.
The First Ice Age (2.4 billion years ago - 300 million years ago):
The First Ice Age (Or FIA in short), refers to a long lasting freezing period that once took place on Planet 276.
After the formation of the level, the heated matter cooled down at an extremely high speed, forming a dense metal core at the center of the level, but the temperature was still lethal (~700 degrees Celsius). Planet 276 at that time is fundamentally a giant magma sphere floating in the void that has an atmosphere consisting of mostly carbon dioxide, captured by the gravitational field of . At that state, Planet 276 could be reached by noclipping from a neighboring level, would rather be recognized as a void object instead of a level using standards nowadays.
Approximately 2.4 billion years ago, a level full of water, presumably a sub-level of Level 7, collided with Planet 276. This results in the further reduction of the temperature of level due to high specific heat capacity of water. This also resulted in the level having a thick layer of water vapor at its atmospheric outer edge. The formation of white precipitation precludes observers from directly seeing anything beyond.
The temperature of the level was reduced gradually, and from 1.9 billion years to 1.2 billion years ago, it had a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius to 32 degrees Celsius, which subtly suits life. It is presumed that simple life existed back then, but quickly went extinct as the average temperature continues to decline. The youngest fossil found under the rocky layer of Planet 276 suggests that all creatures went extinct 1.17 billion years ago, and the average temperature at that time is presumed to be -2 degrees Celsius.
Albeit the extinction of animal life, plants retained their survivability by thickening their cuticles, and possessing the ability to melt snow to obtain water. This can be proved by measuring the surface temperature of the plant roots, which always maintains at around 7 degrees Celsius, enough to melt snow for survival. To adapt to the blizzard-prone environment, the plants also developed deep roots and complex woody structure. The plant's features strengthened with the worsening environment, and they started to take over the entire surface of Planet 276. Nowadays, plant life can be seen often among the snow, blinding in the landscape with their pure coat of ice, even if the temperature has lowered to an average of -19 degrees Celsius.
The First Ice Age lasted until 300 million years ago, and the cooling reached an equilibrium, ceasing to exist. By that time, the temperature was at an average of -17 degrees Celsius, and snow has taken over the level permanently.
First Discovery (1899 - 1900):
Planet 276 was first discovered by a small moving outpost named as the White Resilience, specifically two M.E.G members, Dr. Lucifer and Dr. Advin, who were originally having a mission on Level 182, but stumbled upon the level instead after accidental noclipping. The crew encountered extremely hard environmental conditions on the level, and only two of the original 17 members, Dr. Taylor and Dr. Silver, were able to escape and they were the only ones who survived. They succeeded in discovering the first exit ever recorded in the reports of Planet 276, which led them to Level 336.
The level was then reported via official channels to the then-M.E.G, which set off a sequence of responses and actions on the part of the organization. As a result of the report, all entrances to Planet 276 have been temporarily locked down, guarded by several members, and are strictly discouraged to enter due to its extreme frigid temperature and environmental hazards. Based on the testimonies from the only two survivors, the level was labelled as part of the "Class Environmental" level list during the year of 1899, which was then modified to "Class 5 Environmental" after a huge revamp of the scale of the Survival Difficulty in the database in the year of 1900.
First Settlement (1902 - 1905):
The First Chi Expedition, led by one of the survivors of the White Resilience outpost, Dr. Lucifer, invaded Planet 276 to investigate and collect data of the safety and stability of its environment on the date February 15th, 1902. The expedition was also accompanied by nine Backrooms veterans from the M.E.G organization. During the expedition, the team was attacked by a strong blizzard, and only four of the group had survived the lethal weather. The rest of the team decided to retreat, and thus, all researches and investigations on the level had been halted and extended infinitely.
Second Settlement (1939 - 1940):
The attempt of settlement on Planet 276 was reconsidered due to its research potential and due to the advancement in technology and science. A new expedition team named as The Second Chi Expedition was led by two trustful researchers of the M.E.G, Dr. Taylor and Dr. Silver. They entered Planet 276 with sufficient winter gears and supplies, and they managed to survive the hazardous conditions. A new base named as M.E.G Outpost Chi was set up near a snow valley, and more researchers joined the base during the year 1940. The settlement on Planet 276 was considered successful.
The Launch Project (1941):
Several satellites were launched into the space of Planet 276, which are Satellite X1, Satellite X-2, Satellite L32, Satellite IX and Satellite XO. In the date of March 17th, 1941. Level 276.1 was found by a footage of a satellite that was named as the X-2. After a day of the discovery of Level 276.1, Satellite X-2 and the others lost signal during midnight and was assumed destroyed by an unknown force. The remnants of the satellites scattered and crashed into the terrain of the level, leaving huge craters on the level's landscape. A part of Satellite X-2, the body piece crashed right into the base of M.E.G Outpost Chi after an hour the satellites lost signal. The base was destroyed, and all staff left inside were presumed dead. Fifty-three pieces of the satellites were successfully retrieved at the year 2025. The biggest piece of the destroyed satellites, part of another satellite named as Satellite X1, was found under a ice cliff, buried under snow. It showed traces of an explosion, and there were scratch marks all over the piece, especially on the outer parts. Currently, Satellite X-2 and Satellite XO has been completely restored and stored carefully in the M.E.G's headquarters. The other satellites, in fact, are still remained unfound and the current M.E.G has dispatched several expedition groups in order to retrieve the lost remnants and pieces.
Third Settlement (1982 - 2021):
The third settlement on Planet 276 occurred in the year of 1982, when Dr. Nacho and Dr. Icecraft led twenty-nine M.E.G. members back into the level in the hopes of finding a quick exit to Level 399. Another base with the same name as before was created as the second M.E.G Outpost Chi. It was set up in the middle of snow plains, with its size and area larger than the previous M.E.G Outpost Chi.
The Ice Age II (2024):
The Second Ice Age (Or FIA II in short), refers to another long lasting freezing period that once took place on Planet 276, similar to the First Ice Age.
The event took place in the year 2024, with a massive earthquake occurring in the level, possibly as a result of void wave activity from a few million light years away, which was assumed to be produced by the unstable matters dispersed around The Broken. Cracks began to form on the layer between Planet 276 and Level 276.1, causing oxygen molecules in the level to rapidly expand and scatter into the vacuum space of Level 276.1.
The temperature in the level dropped rapidly and had reached to extreme values. According to several testimonies, many wanderers and other people that stayed in the level during this event had suffered several symptoms due to the rapid change in atmospheric pressure and not much of them survived the sudden apocalypse. During the event, one commented that they could hardly breathe, and they feel that their body fluids were boiling. In total, there were only 15 that survived. The apocalypse ended five days later, and the layer between Planet 276 and Level 276.1 began to regenerate. Following the incident, certain places suffered permanent changes to their landscape and climate.
The 4-decade old base from the year of 1982 faced grave destruction during the earthquake. However, due to it having been developed into a strategic stronghold of M.E.G., a restoration program had been launched a few years after. The program ran until 2027, when the base was refurbished to a more modern standard and expanded to accommodate 900 inhabitants. Instead of being a research center, the facility was modified into a massive outpost.
Fourth Settlement (2027 - 2029):
The fourth settlement in Planet 276 refers to the establishment of a second settlement directly dedicated to scientific researches that requires low temperature, known as the "Major Explorer Group Subzero Experimentation Place" (M.E.G S.E.P), and many experiments has been successfully carried out. Due to the available space in Planet 276, it is also used to conduct nuclear tests.
New Era (2031):
The bases in Planet 276 will continue to perform their duty for the foreseeable future. Infrastructure has improved over time, and it is projected that the settlement on Planet 276 will continue to grow.
Within the history of Planet 276, multiple colonies and outposts were built in the level, however a majority of it were destroyed in several events, especially during the Satellite Launch Project and during the Second Ice Age. Currently, 2 outposts were successfully established and still remains in the level's terrain.
The outpost was established in 1888, with 17 individuals, including various wanderers and researchers, who moved and traversed levels of . They were the first to find Planet 276. However, they were greeted with harsh conditions, with 15 comrades killed by a massive blizzard. Consequently, the outpost was dismantled. Dr. Taylor and Dr. Silver were the only survivors of the tragedy at the outpost, but they were never recovered after the Second Ice Age in 2024.
Dr. Lucifer, one of the survivors of the White Resilience outpost, headed the first expedition group, which also included nine Backrooms veterans from the M.E.G. They invaded the level on February 15, 1902, to explore and collect data on the safety and stability of its environment in preparation for settlement. However, the squad was struck by a powerful blizzard, and just four members survived the deadly conditions. The rest of the squad opted to retreat, and the expedition group was terminated.
The second expedition group was led by two trusted M.E.G researchers, Dr. Taylor and Dr. Silver. They entered Planet 276 with enough supplies and were able to survive the harsh conditions. They were able to construct a new base known as M.E.G Outpost Chi near a snow valley, completing the group's mission, and they disbanded on the same day the base was constructed.
The Second Chi Expedition Group constructed the outpost in the year of 1940. In 1941, the outpost constructed several signal towers and launched several satellites into Level 276.1. One day following the satellite launch project, a portion of "Satellite X-2" was destroyed for an undisclosed reason. In the midst of snow plains, it was reconstructed in 1982 by Dr. Nacho and Dr. Icecraft with the help of twenty-nine M.E.G. members; its area and size were more than those of the previous outpost. It was destroyed once more in 2024 during the "Second Ice Age," but a few years later, a restoration programme was started. The initiative ran until 2027, at which point the base was expanded and renovated to a higher quality.
In 2027, the outpost was built as a second settlement specifically devoted to low-temperature scientific study. Owing to the space that is available, numerous experiments have been successfully completed there. Nuclear testing have also been conducted there.
