Level 278 is the 279th level of the Backrooms.

Description

Level 278 resembles a racing circuit similar to the ones used for F1 racing. The track is 42,395 km long with the width of the road between 13 to 17 meter. The road is made of asphalt with the exception of some of the tracks being only dirt tracks. The asphalt does not deteriorate and cannot be destroyed by any means. The circuit is divided into 5 sections: main circuit, forest section, desert section, urban section, and farmlands section. Each section will have asphalt road with the exception of farmlands section, whose track is just dirt, uneven road. There is no day and night cycle in this level, but the forest section will always be at nighttime, while the rest of the sections is always at daytime.

race track

Artist's rendition of the race track in level 278. Note that images of this level taken by a camera will always be blurry

Any attempt to take a picture of this level with cameras or other devices of similar use will result in the taken picture being completely blurry and useless. Therefore, documentation of this level relies on paintings or explorer's description of the place. Attempting to map the circuit proves impossible. For some unexplainable reason, no 2 maps drawn by explorers show the same circuit, even if they travel together. This visual anomaly seems to also extend to some entities living here. For example, one explorer might mistake a Rabid for Frowner, even though both of them differs greatly from each other. Some travellers who have survived here suggest using sunglasses to filter out the visual bug, but some others claim that sunglasses are useless here. In any case, having a sunglasses would be recommended.

Another anomalous part of this level is that any vehicle in this level will consume 5 times less fuel than normal. This proves to be a blessing for the travellers due to how long the race circuit spans.

General rules

There are general rules one must obey in order to survive or even escape from this level:

  • The main circuit is the only safe place in this level. All other sections are teemed with dangerous and hostile entities. The main circuit (and urban area) is also the only place where you may stop or go below 50 km/h
  • When you travel through the circuit, you have to maintain speed not less than 50 km/h at any time, with the exception of the urban section and main circuit. Therefore, travelling by foot or using vehicles that cannot reach that speed is a suicidal move. Travellers who go below 50km/h for more than 5 seconds will instantly combust. The fire cannot be extinguished by any means.
  • It is not advised to drive / travel beyond the road in this level. Although there are accounts of travellers who managed to escape this level by driving out of the road, most of them are never heard from again.

The sections

This section comprises the various sections of the racing circuit. Note that there is a clear white line on the ground that separates each section.

Main circuit

This is the only safe area of this level and also, the only area where you can stop or go below 50km/h. As such, any colony found is situated in this section. The Main circuit is 220 km long and its area is approximately 40 km wide. It is the place where the start/finish line is drawn and is the smallest section out of all 5 sections. The scenery is flat grassland that stretches far with some buildings or houses built by the settlers here. No entities are found here and entities from other sections cannot enter the main circuit. Any travellers who end up from other levels will always arrive in the main circuit.

Due to the fact that the main circuit is still the part of the race track, travellers are advised to slow down when entering this section as to not accidentally crash with other travellers or buildings.

One advantage that this area provides are mechanical or car parts that are buried inside the ground and seem to replenish themselves daily. Those parts are in good condition and some are even "as good as new". Therefore, colonies in the main circuit have constructed a few dig sites to gather these parts for trading or building vehicles to venture through the circuit.

Forest

The forest section is located next to the main circuit and is the biggest section (37%) of the whole circuit. It is always nighttime in the forest section. The scenery is dense forest on both sides of the road. During one's drive, one may see numerous glowing eyes from the forest's edge. Do not look at them for prolonged time. These are Rabids that await travellers who piqued their interests. Once a Rabid picks a target, they will chase the target with incredible ferocity, often outrunning cars that move at top speed. Due to the danger the forest section possesses, you will sometimes see destroyed vehicles on roadside, reminiscent of the past travellers who met their demise.

You will sometimes hear voices from the forest calling for help. Often it will sound like your family members or lover. Do not listen to the voices from the forest. It is unknown whether the voices come from the Rabids or other unknown entities. When the voices come, it will usually be accompanied by a fork on the road ahead. One of the paths will feature a smooth asphalt road and another with dirt road. It is not advised to take the dirt road. Most of the travellers who took the dirt road did not make it back to the Main circuit. Very few travellers who survived said that the dirt road leads to the farmlands section, effectively cutting travel time greatly by skipping the desert and urban area.

Desert

Desert section shares a border with the forest section. Unlike other sections with turns on their road, the road in the desert section is completely straight. The desert covers around 20-22% of the whole circuit. The scenery is a desert that stretches far with no discernible geography. During one's travel, there is a small chance that the sands are pink in color instead of normal sand color. This is still very much part of the desert and so far, no other differences are found. It is always daytime in this section no matter the time.

This section is home for Death Ostriches. Despite the fact that they usually reside in the dark or indoor places, the ostriches in this level are found under the sun travelling in groups. If you see a group of Death Ostriches crossing the road, DO NOT EVER STOP TO WAIT OR CRASH THEM. Do your best to go around them without hitting them. While stopping to wait is a clear violation of the general rules, crashing (and thus possibly killing them) will instead attract the attention of a huge amount of ostriches. They will begin to chase you and will stop at nothing to kill you. They can easily catch up to your vehicle no matter how fast you drive. They will only stop chasing you when you have crossed the border to other sections, but these ostriches appear to remember the people who had crashed one of their kind. A group of travellers claimed that they were immediately being chased by the ostriches as soon as they entered the desert area. It turned out that one of the travellers had once escaped this area after crashing through a Death ostrich.

Urban

The urban section is located next to the desert section and is easily recognized by the amount of houses and buildings surrounding the road. Besides the main circuit, this is the only area where it is safe to stop or go below 50 km/h. This does not mean that the area is safe. Many of the houses and buildings are populated by Facelings who look friendly at first but are actually murderous. When one is travelling in a vehicle, they are friendly towards you and some even wave at you. The danger shows itself whenever you make a stop at a populated part of the area. The Facelings around you will start to move towards you and gaining speed each second. Your vehicles will often malfunction and cannot be started. At this point, you can either fight off the facelings while trying to start your vehicle, or pray for a swift death.

Despite the danger it shows, the urban section is the only place in the level where one can find supplies in abundant, such as fuel, food, drinks, and other useful items. Therefore, colonies often send scavenger squads to raid the urban area for supplies, often losing a lot of people in the process. One particular story told by settlers describes a group of 110 well-armed explorers who decided to take the urban section for themselves, clearing it from the facelings. They were pretty much an army and people thought that this group might be able to open up new safe areas for the settlers. Out of the 110 explorers who went to the urban area, only 2 managed to come back with wounds and nothing in their hands. They were heavily traumatised, telling that the facelings kept spawning from their buildings despite thousands of their corpses littering the street. Since then, it is not advised to bring firearms inside the urban area as the facelings will immediately turn from normal behaviour to aggression on sight. The scavenger squads are also taught to only raid buildings where there are few or no facelings on sight.

Farmlands

The farmlands is the section that shares border with the main circuit towards the finishing line and is probably the most dangerous section of the racing track. As with its name, the farmlands section comprises huge acres of farmlands that seem to stretch endlessly. There are no buildings in this area and it is in perpetual daytime. The plants in the farmland resemble corn but with black seeds instead of yellow. It is advised against traversing these cornfields away from the main track. Another notable difference between farmlands and other sections is the road being dirt, uneven road instead of smooth asphalt. Therefore, navigation is pretty dangerous and travellers need to pay attention to the road. Stopping here is out of question and swerving from the roads most often spells death.

During one's travel through the farmland, one might see someone waving their hands on the side of the road in the distance, asking for a ride. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE STOP TO OFFER THEM A RIDE. Instead, you need to gain speed, reaching at least 80 km/h within 5 seconds of passing it. On uneven road in this section, this proves very dangerous and drivers will need to be extra careful. For one, nobody can survive alone in this section without a vehicle, as they will instantly combust. Another reason is that the person waving is actually a very dangerous Facelings. It will spontaneously teleport itself inside your vehicle or the top of your vehicle, unless you are able to speed up above 80 km/h. It can easily rip apart your car with superhuman strength and kill everyone on board. After approximately 10 minutes of maintaining speed, it is once again safe to lower your speed.

Another danger that lies within this section involves the corns. The corns on the edge of the road may sometimes suddenly explode, hurling black seeds everywhere just like a grenade. These black seeds are known to be very sturdy and can pierce a vehicle with ease. The corn will explode a few seconds after its color turns from black to red

Colonies and Outposts

There are 3 known colonies in the main circuit at the moment of this writing. Due to the nature of the areas outside the main circuit, no other colonies outside have been found. Each of the colony possesses a lot of vehicle repair shops. Therefore, vehicles, tools, and car parts are an inseparable element in trading. All 3 of them are capable of producing vehicles. Oils and fuel are mostly looted from gas stations or factories in urban areas.

Backroom Colonists

The Backroom Colonists make their place at the northwestern part of the main circuit. They are always recruiting people and are open to trade. Out of all 3 colonies, the Backroom Colonists is the colony who most often sends out scavenger squads to the urban areas. This may explain why recruitment is always open. They will gladly trade car parts, vehicles, or petrol for supplies, particularly canned food. Several packs of canned tuna may even fetch an SUV if they desperately want it. They provide a training curriculum for any traveller who wishes to join a scavenger squad, regardless from which colony they are from.

They currently have 136 members in this level.

The Gem Traders

One of the Gem Traders' colonies resides in this level, particularly on the southern part of the main circuit. One of the reasons for their colony here is the abundant source of mechanical parts buried on the ground. They often transport those parts out of this level to their other colonies. Therefore, one should ask the Gem Traders for a way out of this level if they wished to know. The Gem Traders' transporters would always take 1 or 2 travellers with them before their squad leaves to transport their wares out of this level. Aside from their transport schedule, travellers may also hire them to take them out of this level outside the schedule with the right price. Exchanging jewels such as diamonds and rubies ensures their escort service. They rarely recruit people and are not open for trading.

They currently have 51 members residing in this level.

Commercium Foundation

The Commercium Foundation's Base Ironforge is the biggest colony that resides in this level. They build their encampment in the center part of the main circuit, near the start / finish line. The Commercium Foundation is the first colony to welcome any traveller who ends up in this level. They sometimes recruit people and are open to trade. Their main objective is to make a reliable portal to safe levels from the main circuit. Gem Traders' members are often seen helping Commercium Foundation with their objective in exchange for an exclusive portal to their HQ in Level 1819. Compared to Backroom colonists, Commercium Foundation rarely sends scavenger squads to the urban area. They will gladly trade car parts with supplies.

The Commercium Foundation currently has 267 members residing in this level.

Entities

Important note: Entities native to their area cannot seem to cross to other areas, as if there is an invisible wall separating the sections only affecting the entities.

  • Rabids make their home in the forest area of the race circuit. Do not make prolonged eye contact to them.
  • Death ostriches reside in the desert area.
  • Facelings make their home in the urban area and the farmlands

Entrances and Exits

Entrances

Note that any traveller coming to this level will always end up inside the main circuit area.

  • When you encounter a bamboo hut in Level 1075, you may find a Sports whistle inside. Blow the whistle as loud as you can and you will immediately feel drowsy. You will wake up in this level.
  • Find a racecar toy in Level 18 and flush them in a toilet. The toilet will also pull you down the stream and you will end up wet in this level.
  • Find a way outside the abandoned warehouse in Level 998, either by noclipping or through a door or hole. Once you are out, you will be on a flatland at nighttime and there will be a flag on far distance. Walk towards the flag until the flag disappears. You will end up near the western border of the Main Circuit in this level.
  • Navigate through the park in Level 43 and find a ride whose cart resembles a race car the most (The ride does not always appear in the park). Get inside the ride and close your eyes. You will hear the the sounds of attraction powering up before it goes abruptly silent after 15 seconds. Open your eyes and you will end up in this level, on the finish line

Exits

  • Ram your vehicle towards a huge tree in the forest area. This particular tree will be situated at the edge of the forest near the road, its bark will be pink-colored, and has no leaves. If you ram your vehicle towards the correct tree, you will noclip to Level 103. Your vehicle will not be carried over.
  • Entering a particular hotel in the urban area will lead you to either Level 515 or Level -10
  • There is a small chance that the road in farmlands will fork into 2 ways, with one of the path being asphalt road. Following the asphalt road will lead you to the desert area in Level 46.
  • If you stray away from the road in any section except the main circuit, there is a small chance that you will encounter an entrance to what seems to look like an underground bunker in the distance. Enter it and you will end up in Level 175
  • Do an almost full lap throughout the race circuit, passing through each section without stopping. When you are about to enter the main circuit's border from the farmlands, you will instead be teleported to Level 628 along with your vehicle
