Level 30 Eris Area

People are often afraid of changes; I'd say I'm more afraid when things never change. However, when I saw such a familiar place vary in the blink of an eye, my chest filled with anguish.

Level 30 pool

Level 30, also referred to as "Aquatic Cycles", is an extensive pool complex consisting of segmented, interconnected aquatic sections that vary in safety. The complex is divided in five distinct areas, each with varying layouts, which are connected linearly; however, two of the stations were progressively interdicted from the other ones with piles of random debris, as one of them presumably contained chemicals in its water, leaving wanderers sickened, while the second one was left in deplorable conditions, assumedly being the birthplace of the Hydrolitis Plague. Upon entering the level, one will find themselves in the first station, Totum, estimated to be the biggest and most inhabited out of the other ones.

Even though its architecture varies with the different sections, some aspects are common to all of them; most pools are covered with monotonous, faded ceramic tiles, with athermic cementitious flooring in its surroundings, which maintains a constant lukewarm temperature through various settings. The building is mainly surrounded by opaque walls, separating the exterior through multiple layers of glass and acrylic; the outside often shows a mountainous landscape, with its fog beclouding the boundaries between earth and sky.

Numerous machinery stations can be recurringly found throughout the level, as to keep its water in a constant lukewarm state; apart from those stations which have been relinquished. Although the rest of the complex remains in a state of silence for most of its space — enough to hear the ripples in the pool — noises coming from the drain tiles indicate that such equipment is also maintained through subterranean systems.

Certain sections of Level 30 are unstable; although the sections of the water park appears as they are adjacent, with no deviations on its path, areas leading back to Totum can be found on Terminus through various rooms and pools. Those noclipping spaces can be identified by slight changes in their appearance which magnifies proportionally to the proximity of a being to its effects. The most common digressions include distortion of matter and loss of physical boundaries – the latter one is mainly visible with nearby objects. During the traverse, one will experience a brief period of darkness, shortly returning to the first section.[1]

I had only met a handful of people in the Backrooms, but in my sole encounter here, I didn't quite catch what they meant by the 'cycle'; thought it was just another fancy terms for the usual events that happen, so I eventually forgot about it. When all you do is walk and see pools, there isn't much you think about.

Totum is where one would find themselves as soon as they enter Level 30; consequently, it is home to most wanderers and small groups on the level. Compared to the other sections, Section 1 accommodates more facilities and less machinery areas — it is speculated that the subterranean maintenance system is present in greater quantities in Totum — and due to its size, resources can be found in abundance, although more blemished spaces can be found close adjoining the next station.

As for its architecture, it maintains a beige hue in its reflective walls and flooring, endarkened by the irregularity of its downlights; the facilities at the pools include warped waterslides, trampolines, and fountains, the former being a common mechanism for the noclipping spaces.

Eventus follows an ocean-based architecture, representing its fauna and flora amidst its darkness; timeworn mechanical installations were formerly its main feature. Currently, rust covers their remnant derelict carcasses, creating an unnerving atmosphere for those who go through unaware. The area eventually became desolate, depredating its structure during the process. It is theorized that humans formerly occupied this section due to findings of appliances and litter, despite its current unoccupancy.

Level 30 Eris Area

Nocturna is the central section of Level 30, roughly dividing the complex in equal segments. The perplexing layout of Nocturna appears to have been randomly placed; twisting waterslides — which often link to one another — and errant walls augments its instability, forging an area prone to non-Euclidean anomalies, including noclipping spaces.

Proper exploration is erratic, with regions containing irregular amalgamations of structures, which can obstruct its linearity or create new passageways. The pools of the section are mostly shallow, which peculiarly contradicts the general theme of the level; however, the color scheme maintains the contrasting characteristic of Eventus, displayed by the contrasting waterslides.

Level 30 Orcus-Sedna Area

Exitus originally was a section seemingly designated for hydrotherapy purposes; its installations included jacuzzis, saunas and steam rooms. Pastel tones are primarily used for the walls, namely cream, lavender, and baby blue. The brown tones of the flooring contrast with the rest of its parallelism, creating an identity for the area.

However, Exitus was partially blocked by debris continuously, as passersby reported liver damage, asthma, and general metabolism alterations, which resulted in its isolation by anthropic methods. As a result, its waters degraded, becoming even more nocive in comparison with its initial descriptions.

Level 30 Quaoar Area-

Terminus is the last section in Level 30, and presumably the origin site for the Hydrolitis Plague, a highly deadly disease that is most commonly found on water-related levels. Its distance to the starting point of the level is the most feasible theory for the proliferation of the bacterium, as less exertion was designated to keep its waters maintained; as for its specific cause, the lack of chlorine facilitated its expansion.

Boundless piles of detritus and dust makes up Terminus' structure, as if it was left to decay. Its labyrinthine layout renders resistance for those who cross its fragmented pools and hallways; the latter being a possible process of transportation to the first station, Totum.

After months of walking and living in the level, the complex started to look like it was ravaged. Had some difficult time getting through all the debris, while also hoping that I would go through unharmed by the disease I was informed about — as I'm here to tell the story, I'd say it went well.

Colonies and Outposts

Despite the evidence of preceding stable groups, no colonies or outposts are settled in Level 30, much on account of its erratic particularities.

Entities

The Hydrolitis Plague

Hydrolitis Plague, commonly referred to as just Hydrolitis, is a microscopic entity present on Level 30, that originated in the Terminus area; it is mostly found there in the level, but it can spread anywhere with untreated and stagnant bodies of water. It is defined as a bacterium, generally transmitted by contact with the toxic water present on the station. The general initial symptoms are fever, weakness, and delirium.

Later on, it mainly targets the blood cells and tissue. In severe cases, it may cause internal bleeding, necrosis, pneumonia, thrombosis, coma, and death. The symptoms get progressively worse as the bacteria settles itself inside the body of the host. It can be transmitted by direct blood to blood contact, airborne transmission, or consumption of infected water.

However, as I went through that transition, it would appear as if long-lasting events in the whole building went through in a matter of seconds. After going through all of that, there I was, at the start of the complex again. It was apparent that a lot of objects that I first saw when I was at that station were gone, and the more I would walk, the more I'd see this pattern.

Entrances and Exits

Entrances

  • Areas of Level 37.1 leading to a water complex will redirect one to here.
  • Noclipping the transverse waves in the pools of Level -33 will take you here.

Exits

  • Entering an employees-only door in one of the abandoned stores may lead one to Level 4.
  • Entering the outflow of one of the pools will lead one to Level 84.
  • Entrances to Level 37 may be found in unstable areas of Level 30.
  • Entering through a jungle-themed door sends one to Level 357.
  • Submerging oneself in a steaming turquoise green jacuzzi sends wanderers to Level 597.

That's when 'the cycle' kicked in. When I returned, it was the same falling sensation I felt multiple times going through the levels; but I was back to where it started, in a slightly blemished rendition. Through my second adventure, I eventually accepted its point. It follows an old motto:
