Anecdote

I first came across this level while wandering level 10. After what seemed like hours of walking I came across a small mountain range. I felt that it was out of place because after being in level 10 for what felt like forever I had never heard of a mountain range. So my curiosity got the best of me and I crossed it. On the other end I found myself staring at a vast forest.

Description

A photo of the wilderness in this level.

Level 311 is a 100 mile long evergreen forest with many unique entities and 6 sub regions. The weather in Level 311 is a chilly constantly foggy overcast with no clear time of day. The only change in weather patterns in Level 311 is the rain event which will be discussed later. Throughout most of the level there are almond water springs and wild berries and fruits which is the main source of food and hydration for most travelers in Level 311. The temperatures while never getting too extreme can cause hypothermia in unprepared travelers so at least wearing a coat or jacket is recommended. While there are many unique entities to this level there are some familiar ones like facelings, smilers and deathmoths.

Sub Regions

Level 311 is split into 6 different sub regions: The Mountains, Safe Zone, Highway, Salt Swamps, Wilderness and Ocean.

Mountains

The mountains will most likely be your first introduction to Level 311 if you are entering from Level 10. The Mountains are deathly cold and are almost devoid of resources and entities. Most people don't stay long in the Mountains and will try to make their visit as short as possible. It should be noted that there is a dirt trail in the Mountains and if crossing you should stick to it or you risk getting lost.

Safe Zone

The Safe Zone has one of the highest human populations in the Backrooms ranging anywhere from 500 thousand to 750 thousand people living in this area. There are many reasons for this high population. When the area was first discovered there where abandoned towns and even a small abandoned city in this region. This infrastructure provided the means to sustain a large population. There is also an effect in this region similar to Level 11 where all normally hostile entities are passive. There only time the Safe Zone becomes somewhat unsafe is when the rain event occurs.

Highway

The Highway is a cleared out location of the forest with a highway and train tracks present in this area. There is risk of running into a hostile entity in this region so it is advised to practice caution when entering. Along the highway there are abandoned gas stations, restaurants and travel stops so if you need to resupply this region is good place to do it. There is also a large train station in the middle of The Highway in which a long train stops at every 5 years.

Salt Swamps

A photo taken of the Salt Swamps

The Salt Swamps are a salt water marshland located along the coastline of Level 311. This region is the only area of Level 311 unaffected by the rain event. You most likely should enter the area prepared as salt rich mud can bog down walking. This salt mud is also a very good building material when dried. It should also be noted that the entire area gets flooded during high tide.

Wilderness

Little is know about the Wilderness. The claustrophobic cluster of trees and vegetation make it a region hard to explore. Demonic howling can often be heard around and in the Wilderness which alone can drop someone's sanity. There is also a multitude of hostile entities in this area both unique and common. Most explores who enter this deathtrap are never heard of again.

Ocean

As evident from the Salt Swamps there is a vast ocean in the northern section of Level 311. Obviously you will need proper water exploration equipment if you intend on spending a large amount of time here. Once diving in you will notice a lot of sea plants but no aquatic animals. Once you realize the reasoning why no animal exists in the oceans of Level 311 it will already be too late

Unique Entities

One of the things that make Level 311 unique is it's collection of unique entities.

Giga Snails

The Giga Snail is a moose sized snail found in all terrestrial regions of Level 311 except for the Mountains. There are harmless to humans and produce a slime trail that can be used as an adhesive.

Bog Crawlers

Bog Crawlers are Crab like entities that can be 10 feet tall found exclusively in the Salt Swamps. They can walk on any surface including the ground, water and even air. The are hostile however one good stab or gunshot should be enough to kill one. Bog Crawler meat is surprisingly tasty and protein rich.

Scythes

The Scythes are humanoid 6 foot tall insects with two bladed arms found in the Highway and Wilderness. They are hostile but will only attack lone wanderers. One of their hunting strategies when coming across a groups is to release a odorless chemical into the air that drives people closer to insanity and makes them more angry. Once a group is split up this way they will kill of the members one by one. It is possible to kill a Sythen by chopping both of their arms off before they can stab you.

Leviathans

Leviathans are aquatic super predators stalking Level 311's waters and responsible for the marine ecological demise. Little is known about the Leviathans as most people who look for them are killed in the act of doing so. God help you if you hear their roars.

Rain Event

In Level 311 there is an event that occurs when it rains. When rainfall occurs entities known as Apparitions will appear around Level 311. Apparitions are ghost like entities resembling Facelings. They are incredibly hostile and are unkillable. The only way to stop one of their attacks is to stay in a building, shelter or the Salt Swamps until the rain event is over. Once the event is over all Apparitions will disappear.

Colonies and Outposts

There is quite a bit of humans activity is the safer areas of Level 311.

Evergreen Federation

The most notable group in Level 311 the Evergreen Federation. They are a defacto nation located in the Safe Zone with multiple towns and Evergreen City under their control. The Evergreen Federation has many things that separate them from much of the other Groups in the Backrooms like a democratic government, currency, citizenship system, a stable economy, sewage system and an electrical grid. Evergreen City is the capital of the Federation and is a city with around 210 thousand people. The city is often seen as the closest thing to a normal city with transit lines, businesses, monuments, a police force, medical workers and zoning laws. Due to it's resemblance to a normal city many travelers will often stay in Evergreen City and integrate themselves as citizens of the Evergreen Federation.

M.E.G Outpost Zeta

The far southern edge of the Highway region is home to M.E.G Outpost Zeta. It's a typical M.E.G outpost open to trade and recruitment for wanderers who come across Outpost Zeta. They also run rescue operation in nearby Level 9 bringing lone wanderers to safer areas.

Debbie's Diner

Somewhere along the highway is the location of Debbie's Diner. Debbie Jhonston was original a diner owner before she nocliped into the Backrooms. She eventually found herself as a diner owner yet again, this time in Level 311. The food at the diner is reportedly some of the best food outside of Level 6.1 and a small community has popped up around the diner.

The Tribe

One of the more unknown colonies is just knows as The Tribe. The Tribe is a group of people in the Wilderness and are incredible hostile. It is assumed that the tribe was a group of people who unknowingly wandered into the Wilderness and where driven to insanity by the Wilderness's demonic howls.

Entrances and Exits

Entrances

The most common way of entry into Level 311 is by crossing the mountains on the eastern edge of Level 10 and following the trail in the mountains. This is also a way out of Level 311 and back to Level 10. There is a chance that is you follow the roads in Level 9 instead of ending up in Level 11 you will end up near Outpost Zeta instead. It is also theorized that if you swim across the oceans of Level 7 for long enough you will enter the oceans of Level 311. This isn't recommended due to the fact that it isn't confirmed and there is the presents of Leviathans in Level 311's waters.

Exits

The train that goes to the Highway's station is a way to go to Level 11. However this train only appears once every 5 years so you will have to wait a while if this is how you will get to Level 11. Also when you enter a restaurant along the highway there is a chance it will take you to Level 6.1. There are also rumors of caves that lead to Level 8 in the Wilderness. This route is not recommended as it would require you to enter the Wilderness.
