"The Sewers; teeming with danger, a cesspool of infection. A dungeon of biohazardous terror where nothing is safe. The industrial backwaters of The Backrooms, abandoned, yet very much alive."

I. Description[]

The famous image of Level 34.

Level 34, colloquially known as The Sewers, is an expansive sewer complex notable for its abundance of infections and diseases. A breeding ground for bacteria, it is a claustrophobic network of sewer tunnels, interconnected by haphazardly placed junctions and drainpipes. The "floor," if it can be called such, is filled with a foot of lukewarm and infected water - filled with various wastes. The walls are made out of worn, slippery bricks, smooth to the touch from being worn down over time. Much of the sewer system requires one to crawl; mostly due to the low hanging ceiling not allowing one to stand up fully. Infectious water drips from the ceiling, often joining the cesspool below. Much of the level is lit by fluorescent lights, which go out on occasion for unknown reasons. Loading audio, refresh page if this doesn't go away...

Much of Level 34 is made up of these tunnels; however, they are typically joined together by junctions and drainpipes. These drainpipes drain all of the infectious liquids into a singular cesspool, and are typically much taller than the tunnels, allowing one to stand up. At the end of most tunnels is a similar smaller drainpipe, often blocked off by corroded iron bars. These bars are notably indestructible, much like the ones on Level 3, for indeterminable reasons. Junctions, on the other hand, serve as the main means of travel in-between tunnels. They are lined with rickety metal walkways, which can easily give way under pressure.

The climate of Level 34 is relatively cold - averaging at around 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature causes the bacterium in the level to multiply and infect much more slowly yet having some complications. The temperature fluctuates between 40 and 60 degrees every few hours, giving the level an ever-changing cold climate. The climate is humid, allowing for an abundance of bacteria in the air, leading to further infection if one stays in the level too long.

The vast abundance of bacteria, diseases, and the general toxicity of the water greatly corrode much of Level 34's structure, causing the bottom of the tunnels to be completely smooth. These smooth floors are unstable, and may give out under pressure, leading to other sewer areas. In between the different tunnels lies various maintenance tunnels - whilst appearing safe, much of them are filled with radon gas, a toxic, odorless gas which can cause various health complications, including cancer, if inhaled. This gas makes the tunnels the only reliable form of travel in Level 34, despite the risks.

Disturbing the uniform network of tunnels, graffiti - in numerous languages - can be found occasionally on the walls, floor, or ceiling. Albeit posing no significant harm, many of these artworks are haphazardly tagged on various surfaces. Physical damage to the structure can be found on various tunnels, such as pieces of a wall missing, are occasionally observed as well. The walls may occasionally contain posters, advertising items such as Almond Water. Such posters are found in close proximity to junctions, drainpipes, and other structures.

Resources such as Almond Water can be found in relative abundance throughout the sewer complex; seemingly hidden from normal view. Reports state bottles being found in nooks - others in ventilation. These bottles, despite the condition of Level 34, are mostly safe to consume, yet have some exceptions. Almond Water on the level is typically infected if it is opened or tampered with in any way, allowing certain bacterium to seep in. Chocolate Sludge and Cashew Water have been discovered in similar conditions.

II. Sentience[]

Humans[]

The existence of biohazards within the level poses a significant threat to human life within the level; nonetheless, a few research groups and permanent settlements have been established within the vast network of sewer tunnels, mainly to collect resources and study the vast microscopic ecosystem within Level 34. A few small research bases by the M.E.G. and the Backrooms Colonists have been set up here. Humans are typically equipped with well-ventilated gas masks, allowing them to withstand the infectious waters.

The Hydrolitis Plague[]

The Hydrolitis Plague is a bacterium which thrives in untreated waters. Due to the climate and conditions of Level 34, it is found in vast abundance all throughout the sewers. Mainly spread via air particles containing said disease, it has varying symptoms if consumed, and is the primary source of danger on Level 34. In addition, other bacterial life exists on the level as well, mainly in the infectious waters of the sewers.

II-3. Other Entities[]

There are no other entities in Level 34.

III. Entrances and Exits[]

Entrances[]

The main entrance to Level 34 is via descending a sewer grate. These grates can be found in various outdoor levels, most notably Level 11 and Level 84. They are typically marked with a crudely painted "34," either on or near the grate. It can also be accessed from Level 2 by finding a sewer tunnel crossing in the middle of a hallway, through a hatch in Level 43, or from certain areas within the waters of Level 37.

Exits[]

Level 34 doesn't seem to have a solid exit point. It fluctuates in-between various positions; some wanderers report descending down a metal ladder, whereas others find a wooden door to exit the level. Exits that have been recorded vanish mere hours later, as a new one appears in its place.
