Level 370 is a level of the Backrooms which was discovered sometime in the nineteen-hundreds.
Description[]
As the 371st level of the Backrooms, Level 370 takes the form of a sprawling, closely compact jungle that stretches endlessly in all directions. The air is thick with moisture, making movement slow and exhausting. Visibility is often nothing more than a few meters, especially in tight areas where mist gathers between the trees. The canopy overhead is uneven but generally dense, formed by broad, overlapping leaves that let in low levels of light. This partial lighting creates constant shifting shadows on the forest floor, making depth perception unreliable. The temperature remains warm, with spikes of oppressive heat at irregular intervals that seem unaffected by any consistent cycle of time.
The trees in Level 370 vary wildly in size and form. Certain ones grow impossibly tall and straight, their bark smooth and grayish with faint vertical striations. Others are gnarled and wide, with roots that stretch above the ground. Many trunks split into two or three branches at low heights, giving them a hunched posture. Most trees are covered in lichen or thick carpets of moss, which range in color from deep green to dark red. The moss tends to decrease sound, making the jungle quieter than it should be. Leaves fall constantly, but they never seem to accumulate on the ground, as if something periodically clears them away.
The ground is uneven, soft in some places and hard in others. Mud is common, often combined with layers of dry foliage. Exposed roots are scattered throughout the landscape and form barriers, forcing wanderers to climb or reroute constantly. In other areas, the soil is littered with sharp stones or brittle fragments of bones. Water collects in shallow pits and long channels that resemble dried-out shores, although water flow has never been observed. These pools often reflect light in strange ways, sometimes showing parts of the jungle that don't match the surrounding terrain.
Vines are present in every direction, extending from trees and looping around trunks. The ground vegetation includes wide-leafed plants, high ferns, and tightly clustered bushes with thorned fruits. Many of these plants move slightly even when there is a lack of wind. Some areas are so densely vegetated that walking in a straight line is impossible without cutting tools.
At higher elevations within the level—on root-formed platforms—the jungle opens up slightly. These raised areas give short glimpses of the canopy or the outline of distant trees, but they offer no consistent bearings. The sky, when visible, has no sun or clouds, only a dim glow that fades to darkness irregularly. The transition between day and night can happen in seconds, with no warning, and during these shifts the plants seem to hold still entirely. When darkness falls, small glimmers appear on some tree trunks or leaves—tiny, dull-blue dots of light, which fade when approached and do not appear to serve any purpose.
Occasionally, artificial objects appear in the environment. Broken light fixtures hang from branches by exposed wires, long rusted metal poles emerge from the soil at random angles, and plastic tubing wraps around trees like ivy. These objects are usually covered in grime or corrosion and do not appear functional. One recurring feature is a thick, white cable that winds through the jungle in a mostly consistent direction. Following it is difficult, as it often disappears under roots or vanishes into trees, thought it seems to lead to nowhere.
Scattered throughout Level 370 are a small number of man-made structures, each with varying degrees of decay. These constructions appear randomly, often partially hidden by overgrowth. Their materials typically consist of weathered wood, rusted metal, and plastic, suggesting pre-existing structures rather than ones naturally formed within the level. These buildings rarely follow any modern architectural rules, and some show signs of being assembled from salvaged or mismatched parts, possibly by undocumented groups.
One of the most frequently encountered structures is a raised wooden treehouse, usually located high in a central tree with vines around its support beams. These treehouses are typically empty, but often contain signs of recent habitation: footprints, empty containers, torn fabric, or mattresses. Despite appearing stable, many of these treehouses creak under weight and have weak floorboards that collapse easily.
In certain parts of the level, broken observation towers made of corroded steel have been found, usually leaning at unsafe angles or partially sunken into the soil. These towers are rarely taller than the surrounding trees, and climbing them provides little advantage in terms of visibility due to the thick canopy. Many have missing steps or damaged platforms, making ascents dangerous. Graffiti, mostly unintelligible symbols, is often found on the walls or railings.
The level also contains many ground-based structures such as sheds, greenhouses, or concrete platforms overtaken by moss. These often serve no purpose and contain nothing that is helpful to wanderers. A few individuals have reported seeing old signage in languages they cannot identify, partially buried beneath vines. Attempts to remove vegetation from these signs usually result in rapid regrowth within seconds. Many of these locations have an unusually low presence of animal life, and the sounds of birds chirping become noticeably quieter in their vicinity.
A particularly rare structure, only reported a few times is a circular bunker-like chamber fused with the side of a tree mound, sealed by a rusted hatch. No confirmed access has been documented, but some accounts describe banging sounds coming from within and faint light leaking out around the doorframe at night.
Sentient Life[]
The jungle’s plant life is thick and constantly shifting, with species ranging from Earth's vegetation to plants only native to Level 370. The plants adapt to their surroundings over time, a common feature being them often regrowing within hours if cut.
As a jungle, it is bound to contain wild animals, though to a lesser degree. It mainly houses animals of the smaller sort, like geckos, frogs, and toucans.
The entity population is scarce, yet should not be disregarded. Few entities have adapted to the environment, but some have decided to call it home, such as certain species of Deathmoths, Narco Jellyfish, Rainbows, Kats, and Blood Wasps.
370#-A: "Bartie," or "Sigma"[]
Sigma is a nomadic entity that most often appears as a calm, adult-sized capybara. It is most commonly seen near lakes or haphazardly walking across trails. Its behavior is always consistent-dry, unbothered by its surroundings, and never reacting to dangers. Its behavior is passive but cautious, and it is known to observe wanderers from a distance.
An enclosure for the entity was built by an unknown group, which contains a pond, rock structures, and a pretend waterfall, along with a food box which mostly depends on wanderers to keep it full. Since the enclosure's creation, Sigma has been significantly more calm, and chooses to spend most of its time inside it.
The name “Sigma” was originally given by an unknown user on Backchat who claimed the capybara was “too calm to be natural” and “acted like it owned the level.” The name stuck due to the entity's rather stoic presence. However, Sigma is not a natural capybara—it is a shapeshifter. The capybara form is simply its preferred disguise, likely chosen for its small appearance and the low threat response it provokes.
Sigma is capable of assuming the exact form of any sentient life it has killed. These transformations are near-perfect, including voice and movement patterns. However, there is often a detail that makes it easier to recognize—behavior slightly off, mannerisms delayed, or the eyes appearing "unfocused." It rarely ever produces noise, but will occasionally make some depending on the form it is taking.
Confirmed victims have included multiple animals and a Smiler. It is unknown how it can transform into the Smiler, as none have been seen on the level yet. The victim's remains are never found. It is unknown how Sigma chooses its targets or how often it shifts forms, but it does not appear to kill at random. Some believe it only acts when followed or provoked, though it most likely only kills for food and self-defense.
Despite its potential danger, Sigma is not universally aggressive. It has never acted aggressively to humans. It may simply be showing its interest if it decides to follow one. Approaching it is not advised, though it should be treated as nothing more than a capybara.
Settlements[]
The Major Explorer Group
Because of the level being safe and un-affected by the Flicker, the M.E.G. have created a private colony that inhabits the level. While their intentions here are unknown, it is thought that they reside here solely to collect the abundant fruits.
The Backroom Colonists
The Backrooms Colonists have came into the level for the same reason, though they are more public and accepting towards lost wanderers. They are known to occasionally trade with other groups/individuals for Almond Water and other valuable objects.
The Alliance of New Regime
The Alliance of New Regime has a base set up with the headquarters being set up in one of the level's treehouses. This settlement serves as a de facto social hub within the level, as it is by far the biggest one, and is made up of more than two hundred people. Expeditions are regularly hosted, and the colony's members survive by harvesting natural food and trading with the Backrooms Colonists.
Entrances and Exits[]
Entrances[]
The methods of entry to this level are:
- Using the level's respective Level Key;
- No-clipping in Level 369;
- Finding a sign in Level 36 that details a plane to "The Jungle". It should always have a neon arrow next to it. Following the arrow's chosen direction will usually lead one here through an unknown way.
- Through the green route in The Metro.
Exits[]
The methods of egress from this level are:
- Entering an area with polluted air, leading to Level 38.
- Swinging on a vine and building enough momentum to fall through the floor will lead to Level 10.
