Level 371 is the 372nd level of the Backrooms.

Description

Level 371 resembles a spiralling staircase. The pathway is only 50 cm wide and the floor is made of beige-colored ceramic. The wall is made of concrete and white-colored. The staircase seems endless but it is measured at around 1000 meter in height. Occasionally one would find a small, vertical window, but nothing can be seen from it. The lighting is adequate enough to illuminate the entire room although no light sources can be found. The level itself is only 6 meter long x 6 meter wide in size. The staircase handle is made of unknown material similar to plastic but feels cold to touch. At both ends of the staircase one will find a small landing platform with a door that could lead to other levels.

One portion of the staircase in Level 371

Throughout the staircase, there is also a small landing platform at every 50 meter. On the platform one will find a few cardboard boxes stacked on top of each other. Most of them are closed with tapes with the exception of 1 or 2 boxes left open. When one sees the boxes, one might be compelled or feeling a strong desire to open the taped cardboard boxes. DO NOT OPEN THE TAPED BOXES. They contain Clumps that will immediately pull you inside and consume you. The ones already opened usually contain bottled Almond Water, potato chip bags, or a thick book with dark cover but no title. The water is safe to drink, but the chips are not edible. The book itself seems to be glued shut and cannot be opened. There is a particular story by a traveller long ago who found a shoe rack on one of the platforms instead of cardboard boxes. The traveller took one of the shoes and wore them. It is said that the shoes are very durable and able to mute the wearer's footstep noises, no matter what materials the wearer steps onto. Since then, there has been a number of travellers who travelled to this level in search of the magic shoes, but very few survived and even fewer who managed to grab a pair. These shoes are very much in demand and fetch a very high price.

Every 200 meter, the landing platform will feature a door in addition to cardboard boxes or shoe rack in rare circumstances. Together with the topmost and bottommost platform, there are 6 doors in total. The doors on the platforms between the staircases cannot be opened with normal means and are indestructible. These can only be opened with the help of the hostile entities present here. Only one account of 2 Travellers so far who were able to open one of the doors, in which both of them almost got killed by the raging skin-stealers living in this level. They said that the door ended up transporting them to Level 521. Due to the inherent danger of the mechanism needed to open the doors in addition to the moderate amount of hostile entities found here, there has been no other attempts to open these doors.

The topmost and bottommost platform only feature a wooden door without any cardboard boxes or shoe racks. Travellers can open these doors to go to other levels. There is a very small chance of these doors being locked shut. The key lies somewhere on the staircase.

Colonies and Outposts

No colonies or outposts are found here due to the limited spaces and hostile entities

Entities

Clumps hide inside the taped cardboard boxes, waiting to feed on the poor travellers who got too curious and open them

The walls on the staircase is populated with Dullers. They are the main cause of travellers' death in this level. Due to the limited space and narrow staircase, they are able to effectively kill travellers without much struggles. The walls which are inhabited by Dullers will be a bit grayer than other walls. These are not distinct and very often overlooked by careless travellers.

Skin-stealers are also known to populate this level, travelling through the staircase and luring travellers to their demise.

Mechanism to open the middle doors

This section is only based on an interview with the 2 travellers named Hughes and Larry, who are the only ones able to accidentally open the doors on the platforms in between the stairs. It is not advisable to try to recreate this scenario and travellers will need to devise another, preferably safer way to open the doors. Below is the story told by Hughes (Larry at this time of writing cannot be interviewed)

Hughes' story

We were almost killed trying to escape this level. It started fine. We were walking down the stairs. Hadn't found any other entities so far. I couldn't remember clearly, but we were at around 300 meter from the top when we saw a darkened patch of wall. Larry knew that a Duller might pull us if we were not careful. Thinking about it again, I was glad Larry was with me during the whole ordeal, or I wouldn't be here anymore to tell you the story.

I was indeed stupid back then. Larry was carefully going down the steps while he kept looking at the patch of darkened wall. I was trying to loop over through the railing to skip the series of steps in front of it. That's when everything went wrong. I accidentally sprained my ankle after jumping and let out a pretty loud scream. Larry rushed to help me and we suddenly heard loud steps coming from above us. I looked upwards and there was a huge crowd of skin-stealers looking down and rushing towards us. At that moment I felt that this level was going to be our graveyard.

Larry helped me on my feet and we tried to run away from them. Thankfully, there was a platform not far below from where I sprained my ankle. I told Larry to just leave me here and run away, but he wouldn't have it. The footsteps were getting louder and we were almost at our wits' end until Larry had a brilliant idea. He wanted to try using the Clumps from the taped cardboard boxes to fend off the Skinstealers. It was basically a suicidal move but we had no other choice. He opened the box and tried his best to not let the Clump pull him inside. I was sitting on the floor holding him. After a few struggles, Larry had managed to point the box of Clumps facing the staircase, with him holding the closed end of the cardboard box. I could already see the skinstealers rushing towards us.

The first skinstealer was being held by the clumps. Larry was trying hard to hold them. It worked for a while. The skinstealers were being slowly pulled inside by the Clumps, but there were even more skinstealers coming from above. With how fast the skinstealers were running, I told Larry to jump aside so he wouldn't be crushed by them. He jumped, leaving the skinstealers rushing towards the door. To our surprise, the sheer amount of momentum caused by the skinstealers was able to destroy the door and they immediately rushed inside it. One lucky skinstealer was able to stop in front of it, but I managed to kick it down the stairs with my working leg.

The room inside was dark and the skinstealers who rushed inside didn't go out anymore. Between more skinstealers coming from above and me not being able to walk, we decided to enter it. As soon as we entered it, we fell down for about 10 seconds and landed pretty hard on a huge room with a revolving door near us. That door might had brought us to another level.

Entrances and Exits

Entrances

  • In a very rare chance you are running through the hallway of Level 643, you might come across a trash compartment big enough for one person to fit inside. Enter it and you will end up on one of the platforms in this level, but never the topmost or bottommost platform.
  • Reading a book titled "The History of Stairs" from the library in Level 244 will transport you to this level. Note that the book is not always present in the library and it is often guarded by smilers
  • One reliable way to enter this level is by entering a restaurant in Level 382. The restaurant must have unlocked bathroom available for patron (not staff-only bathrooms). Open the bathroom door and you will arrive on the bottommost platform in this level.

Exits

  • The doors on the platforms in between the staircases lead to Level 521. It is unknown if it surely leads to level 521 or it might transport travellers to other levels. So far, only 1 attempt has been made to open these doors
  • the door on the bottommost platform leads to one of the restaurants in Level 382
  • When you find a book inside a cardboard box, there is a 5% chance that the book will be leather-bound and tied with human hairs. If you open the book, you will instantly be knocked off and transported to Level 672
