LEVEL 4010
[ EDITING PROCESS, CRITIQUE NEEDED AND APPRECIATED!!!]
LEVEL 4010 "Mass Evolution"
Changing Environment
Changing Entities
Can be stable or unstable
Description
Level 4010 is the 4011th level of the Backrooms.
Level 4010, otherwise known as "Mass Evolution" is a normal level of the Backrooms, and is known for it's incredible ability at harbouring multiple species of flora and fauna. Some of which are extremely hostile, while others are more comparable to your average household kitten. This level is rapidly depleting in size due to a mass extinction event, which happens once every hundred years. The current mass extinction has been dubbed "The Boiling Point" and it is estimated in around 68 years that all life here will be gone, plant and animal.
However, one strange effect of Level 4010 is that any life born on the level, will develop and evolve at a more rapid pace than normal. For example, overnight, a frog like creature may grow horns, or a bird may develop gills. And so after a few months of silence that follows after an mass extinction event, new life will begin to sprout. And after around 3 years, Level 4010 will be thriving complex with life once again. Studies are currently being performed on these effects, and what may cause them.
Different versions of Level 4010 before it's extinction events have been archived and are available in the database below.
2000 - 2022 [Hailstone Range]
Description:
The current version of Level 4010 is a lush mountain range, its highest point being Hailstone Mountain, with dense jungles and towering snowy peaks, often coated in Silk Moss. When you enter the level, you will come face-to-face with a large stone wall. Approximately 10 metres in height, 14 metres in length, and 2 metres in width. This wall is has various Latin words carved into its smooth surface.
The current extinction event occurring for the Hailstone Range is The Boiling Point.
Species Present:
Spined Dragon-Serpent
A spined serpent with its wings folded back tightly.
Species Description
Spined Dragon-Serpents, otherwise known as Spined Serpents. Are large Komodo-Dragon like creatures, with long talons and large leathery wings. They have a wingspan of approximately 5 metres, and stand at a height of around 3 metres. Spined Serpents get their name from the long spines on their backs, and their serrated scales.. .They are quadrupeds, but can stand on their hind legs if needed. Spined Serpents come in a variety of colours, some rarer than others. A table below displays the rarity of each variant.
Variants of the Spined Serpent
| Colour Variant | Description | Rarity | Habitat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crimson Fireback | Usually a dark, pale shade of crimson. With bright orange stripes and swirls on it's back. | Common | Volcanic caves, and hot springs in the Hailstone Grotto. |
| Sandy Spottedtail | A sandy yellow, with dark tan spots along its back and tail. | Common | Sandy ponds or beaches |
| Lime Larkwood | A pale moss green shade with splotches of dark green across their bodies. | Uncommon | Plains of Peril |
| Cavern Crasher | Batlike Spined Serpents that live primarily in cave due to light sensitivity, they are shy and not often seen. | Uncommon | Hailstone Grotto |
| Violet Swirl | A deep purple or violet, and the most aggressive form of the Spined serpent. They are armed with a strange black toxin that sprays at a range of 15 metres from their fangs. | Rare | Plains of Peril |
| Cavern Crystal | A variant of the Cavern Crasher, they have icy blue eyes and spikes along their backs, these spikes are usually made of firesalt or diamond. | Rare | Around 500 metres deep in the caves. |
| Goldenwing | A golden, shiny version of the Spined serpent, occurs when Sandy Spottedtails breed with Cavern Crashers. | Very Rare | Sandy areas or caves. |
| Vanta Black | The opposite of the Albino gene, instead giving Spined Serpents a deep black shade. | Mutation | (Rarely) Hailstone Grotto, or Anywhere at night. |
| Albino | An occurrence of the albino gene, causing Spined Serpents to become a ghostly white. | Mutation | (Rarely) Hailstone Mountain |
Behaviour
Spined Serpents are known to nest in caves or large trees. Often making nests out of Silk Moss and Cotton Trees, these nests are around 13 x 13 metres in diameter. Spined Serpents are usually hostile, but can be tamed with raw meat and sometimes almond water, when tamed, it is possible to ride them, although a saddle is recommended due to the sharp needles on their scales.
Habitat
Habitat varies, depending on variant, see table above.
Tales of the Spined-Dragon-Serpent
"Alot of Effort for Some Eggs"
You traverse through the darkened rainforest, you vision was clouded with sweat, why didn't you bring any almond water? You wipe your face, this mission wouldn't take too long at least -- you just had to collect the eggs of a Spined serpent -- which was easier said than done. You notice a faint scent of scorched earth, you must be getting close. You load the tranquilizer gun you had been armed with. If you aimed just right, the dart would penetrate the scales of the beast and render it unconscious, allowing you to take its eggs. This wasn't in cold blood however, you only needed the eggs for research purposes.
After around 5 torturous minutes of walking through the dense jungle, you spot it, a moss-green Spined Serpent. It is curled around its nest, its large claws grasping its fragile eggs, it looked so calm, so free of worry. No, you can't back out now, you at least need 3 of the eggs, that's it, there were plenty more, it wouldn't hurt to take some. You aim your tranquilizer at the beasts neck, bracing for the shot, after some hesitation, you shoot. The beast briefly wakes from its slumber and roars in anger, but soon stumbles to the ground, unconscious.
You rush over to the nest and start loading the eggs into a padded wooden crate. Some eggs were a pale red, others were a fluorescent green, but all were around the side of a water melon. You pick up the crate and rush back the way you came, taking the eggs with you.
Phantom Hawk
An interpretation of the Phantom Hawk based on its few sightings.
Species Description
Described as large, griffon like creatures. Due to their unusual ability to turn invisible at will, not much is known about them, other than they are shy, yet powerful carnivores.
Habitat
Usually spotted at the peaks of Hailstone Mountain
Behaviour
Still being studied, Phantom Hawks tend to run at the sight of wanderers. But have shown to be aggressive when necessary.
Tales of the Phantom Hawk
White Feather
You trudge through the snowy peaks of Hailstone Mountain, the snowstorm was getting worse now, you had to find shelter soon. Unsure of where you are, you check your compass, although it was hard to see in the violent snowstorm, you could tell you were headed north. Your boots are flooded with melted snow, you could feel your limbs going numb; frostbite was setting in. Thankfully, you spot a cave up ahead, or at least what looked like one. You grip the rocky sides of the mountain and start moving up toward the cave, it was difficult to climb against the strong winds, but not impossible.
Soon you reach the cave, you grasp the floor and hoist yourself up. It was much warmer in here,
this cave must lead to a magma tube deeper below the surface. You think to yourself.
You head slightly deeper into the cave, hoping to ward of the frostbite by sitting near the magma tubes. You didn't have to get close to feel the feeling coming back into your frozen limbs. Not long after, you feel something briefly brush your shoulder,
probably just the nerves being set off by the sudden heat You think to yourself again, but something just wasn't right.
You felt a presence other than your own around you. You remind yourself that anyone in a dimly-lit cave would be paranoid about not being alone right now, But again, something was wrong. You stand up, looking around to reassure yourself that you were indeed alone, and that nothing was up this high anyway.
at least not that we know of... You shake the thought away, you were alone, you were safe.
did something just move?
then your hit with a harsh realization, something was in here, and it wasn't keen on being spotted.
You pull out your flashlight, and point it at different areas around the room.
If somethings there you better show yourself!" you yell shakily.
You see a pair of glowing white eyes open and stare back at you.
Oh come on don't tell me there's smilers now! you whisper to yourself. then you notice a white, griffon-like figure begin to appear right before your eyes.
You shake your head, staring at the creature in front of you, it had pure, snow-white feathers, and a sharp, grey beak. Its eyes were an eerie, glowing, empty white, and its wings flared outward as it stared you down. This was something no one had seen before, and you were just staring at it, yeah, not like you should name it or take a photo of it! Oh yeah! A name....uh. You think swiftly of a name, it can turn invisible, and it kinda looks like a bird.....
"A phantom hawk!" You shout without meaning too. The creature jumps back and stomps its hooves at you. oops...
THe beast dashes for the caves entrance, spreading its wings and turning invisible as if it were dissolving. it flaps its large, feathered wings and takes of into the storm. You sigh with disappointment
"Nice one bozo, now its gone" You exclaim angrily to yourself.
Amrita Bee
An image of an Amrita Bee collecting Nectar from Cotton Tree flowers.
Species Description
Small, green bees with darker green stripes. They have white fuzzy antenna, and 7 legs. 3 on each side, and one of the end of their abdomen. Amrita Bees are usually extremely shy and docile, only attacking if necessary. However when do they sting, they inject a chemical into wanderers that causes their nerves to shut off, Allowing the bees to swarm and kill the wanderer without the wanderer crying out in pain, thus preventing them from attracting help.
Habitat
Found mainly in the Larkwood Rainforest feasting on cotton tree flowers, however Amrita Bees have also been sighted in the Plains of Peril
Plant Life
Silk Moss
Species Description
A sentient hive-minded entity, it is extremely soft, and is often compared to chinchilla fur. However it often excretes liquid pain due to it's digestion process. it consumes almond water, and dissolves it in liquid pain, Despite Liquid pain not being known to be corrosive at all due to this, it is advised wanderers avoid the plant
Cotton Trees
An image of blooming Cotton Trees
Plant Description
Cotton Trees are a large, thick species of tree located in the Larkwood Rainforest. They have snow-white leaves that span over 3 metres wide and 2 metres long, along with silky, cotton flowers that grow at random times of the year. These flowers are a favourited delicacy for the Amrita Bee, often causing the small insects to go into a drunk-like state after they eat the flowers.
Locations
Hailstone Mountain
Hailstone Grotto
Creatures such as the Cavern Crasher variant of Spined serpents, are also found here. Often hanging from stalactites on the ceilings of the cave. They are usually shy, but have long curved claws that are designed to cut through rock, and so provoking them is not a wise idea.
Plains of Peril
Almond water can be found in the roots of the grass here, and in small sandy ponds, and it is safe to drink, but it is best to mix it with a few drops of Spined Serpent saliva, this is due to the enzymes in the saliva breaking down toxic chemicals found in the roots of the grass.
Larkwood Rainforest
1899 - 1999 Era [Ocean Plateau]
Description:
This version of level 4010 was a vast ocean, with a supposedly infinite coral reef to the east, and a deep trench known as the Subaqueous Pit the west. The seafloor was coated with thick layers of sand, clay, and rusted iron fragments.
The extinction event for the Ocean Plateau was The Collapse.
Species Present
Great Leviathan
Species Description
The Great Leviathan was a large, majestic, and powerful carnivore. with long serrated teeth that were at least 2 metres in width, and 5 metres in length. It was estimated to be at least 250 metres long, with a slender snakelike figure. It had bright blue bioluminescent marking across its body, and large antennae atop its head to help it detect nearby prey. They tend to come in shades of blue, green, and occasionally purple or violet Or white if they were albino . Their eyes are always a shade of black or grey, even if they carry the albino gene.
Habitat
Great Leviathans would dwell in the Subaqueous Pit at depths of around 5000 metres, however they can dive and survive at depths of around 10,000 metres. They would nest in these areas, using seaweed to line the inside of their tunnels.
Behaviour
Usually harmless when they were not hunting, Great Leviathans would dig deep tunnels into the cliffs of the Subaqueous Pit. Using these pits, they would position themselves so that their head was at the entrance to the tunnel, and when something swims by, they will launch forward and grab it.
Tales of the Great Leviathan
The Great Encounter
You trembled with fear, no one had successfully photographed a Great Leviathan up until now, would you be the first? You become lost in your own thoughts, anything could go wrong, you could frighten it by accident with the camera flash and.....You didn't want to think about it, you had to keep your eye on the prize; Being the first to photograph a Great Leviathan. You readjust your flippers, and check your diving suits tank oxygen levels -- everything was in prime condition. Carefully, you descend down into the Subaqueous Trench.
By the time you had descended to the correct depth of 3000 metres -- the deepest the suit could go without being crushed -- you noticed a flicker of blue light in the distance. Was that it? Was that the Great Leviathan? You turn on your camera and prepare to face the beast, the odds of this mission being a success were low, but not zero. Little is known about the behaviour of the Great Leviathan, but it is estimated to be relatively hostile. Slowly, a large, blue beast swims out of the abyssal depths of the Subaqueous Trench. It snakes towards you, moving it's body in a spiralling way as it swam. Soon, you are staring into the voided black eyes of the rarely-seen Great Leviathan.
It flashes its bioluminescent scales, lighting up the darkness around you. Around you, you spot species of jellyfish, coral, starfish, and- was that a kind of giant shrimp?
The leviathan lets out a loud, petrifying roar, vibrating the water around it, it then places its gentle gaze back on you....Oh yeah! the camera! You pull out the camera and start taking photos. As you do so, you notice that as the camera flashes, the Leviathan flashed back, as if it were responding to you. It looks at you one more time, then turns around and swims down into the depths once more.
Dorsalfish
A school of Dorsalfish
Species Description
Taking on the appearance of salmon, except for the fact they have a large dorsal fin on their backs. Dorsalfish are typically shy herbivores, at least if they are female, females are always a light blue, with white underbellies. Males however, are omnivores, and are usually silver, black, or white, with stripes of almost any colour along their sides. They are the main prey of the Great Leviathan.
Habitat
Dorsalfish live at depths of around 500 - 5000 metres, and their population is spread out between the Reef and the Subaqueous Pit.
Behaviour
While the females are typically shy pacifists, the males are equipped with a toxic line of barbs along their backs. A single touch from these barbs will cause drowsiness, fever, shortness of breath, pale skin, severe pain, and death, if not treated.
Locations
Subaqueous Pit
Admiral Reef
A seemingly infinite coral reef that could be found 1 kilometre west of the Subaqueous Pit. It contained many species of tropical fish, every fish being unique in appearance. Due to this, the specimens could not be documented.

Extinction Events:
Extinction events occur in variations of Level 4010 every 100 years. These events "reset" all life here, allowing new species and entities to thrive in a brand new environment.
THE COLLAPSE
This event ended the Ocean Plateau era, and was the process of the ocean 'draining' of all its water. Due to this, the Subaqueous Pit fell in on itself, almost causing the Great Leviathan to become extinct before the event was over.
THE BOILING POINT
A currently occurring event that will end th Hailstone Range in around 68 years. It is slowly raising the temperature of the Era, and will eventually burn away all remaining life. However, it is speculated Cavern Crasher variants of the Spine Serpent may survive.
