Level 422 is the 423rd level of the Backrooms.

Description

Level 422 is a relatively small liminal space resembling an 80's themed town. It only has a single street which consists of a movie theatre, a diner, a mall, and a few other smaller shops. Brightly coloured houses can be seen in the distance but never reached.

Level 422 is reported to give off comforting and safe vibes but the longer you stay the more unsettled you begin to feel. It is said that it starts to feel almost "too perfect". It is made to seem as close to a real-life town as possible, from the way the inhabitants act to the way everything is managed. The town itself is fairly safe and you can even find food and drinks there. Oddly familiar vintage-sounding music can be heard everywhere, never sounding closer or further no matter where you walk. The only time it stops is when you enter a building as it gets replaced with different song.

Buildings and Shops
The Happy Diner.png
The Diner

Here you can get fresh food and drinks. Almond water is usually the only drink available but on rare occasions a single vanilla milkshake may be served. Inhabitants of the level are seen "working" behind the counters, serving food, and dining like normal humans.

The Happy Theatre.png
The Theatre

The theatre appears to be a typical retro-styled theatre with patterned carpet and brightly coloured walls. It is noted that the screens stay turned off until a wanderer walks into the area. Once this happens that persons happiest memories will begin to show on screen, compiled together like a film. You can even hear the audio from the memories although it is played backwards. Again, the inhabitants of this level are seen exhibiting "human-like" behaviour. Although they are sometimes seen eerily staring at the blank screen for hours on end until someone turns it on. It is not known why they do this. The movie "title" is another strange thing about the theatre. It is always seen as "Yplah" which backwards translates to "Happy". The title never changes.

The Happy Mall.jpg
The Mall

The mall is the largest building on the street. It is also the one you should be most cautious in though as it is a prime spot for the Doppelganger entity. The mall is fairly similar to real life ones except all the store names are backwards. Its noted that the stores are all knock-off versions of real ones and have names that are synonyms of the actual ones. This location is also known to be the loudest and busiest place, as inhabitants can be seen rushing from store to store and communicating with each other. A familiar jingle can be faintly heard throughout the mall.

The Happy Laundromat.jpg
Other Shops

Other stores consist of un-aquirable knick-knacks and miscellaneous items. They are known to appear as vaguely familiar things, yet you are unable to actually make out what they are. There is a laundromat although no one is ever seen actually doing laundry inside and there is also a music store that advertises cassette tapes and vinyls. If you manage to listen to one it is said to sound extremely eerie as the music is all backwards.

Survival Difficulty: Class 5
》Unsafe
》Unsecure
》Entity Infestation

On the surface Level 422 seems very safe and friendly but it is observed to have an alternate side that is extremely dangerous and labelled as a Class 5. It is unknown if this is a Sub-level of The Happy Side or if it is all part of one level. It is deemed "The Twisted Side" and can only be accessed using 1 of 3 ways.

Method #1: By attempting to travel to the houses in the distance you will begin to notice that they continue to stay the same distance away no matter how far you walk. If you continue to try you may end up "teleporting" to the Twisted Side.

Method #2: By following a Doppelganger you will be transported there.

Method #3: If you stay in Level 422 for too long or if you end up walking into an active teleport area, then you can be taken there. (Note that this is not always the case and that some wanderers are reported to be able to stay on The Happy Side for long periods of time without being teleported.)

From a first glance the Twisted Side does not appear to be different than The Happy Side, but you'll eventually notice that all the colours are inverted. If you survive long enough to look around, then you will find that all the food is rotten and that the buildings in the insides are all run down and trashed. The Twisted Side is inhabited by bloodthirsty entities called Twisted Imitators.

Entities

Imitators

Imitators are the main inhabitants of The Happy Side. They are extremely friendly an not hostile at all. They can be seen working in the shops and walking down the streets. They are shown to exhibit very human-like behaviour. Imitators also take on a human-like appearance. The interesting thing about them is they all look somewhat similar to people you have met before or knew personally but different enough to where you can only barely recognise them. Because of this, looking at one will give you the feeling that you know that person but you wont be able to make out exactly who it is.

Twisted Imitators

These entities are bloodthirsty creatures that feed on wanderers by taking their memories. If you get your memory taken by a Twisted Imitator you are forever doomed to walk the backrooms unaware of who you are and where you came from. You become a hollow shell of a person. Twisted Imitators cannot leave The Twisted Side until they have taken enough memories to become a Doppelganger. It is unknown exactly how many they need to "level up". The only way to meet one is by getting to The Twisted Side yourself. If you are escorted by a Doppelganger they will take your memories before a Twisted Imitator can. Twisted Imitators look exactly like a person you know except their faces are upside down. This makes them extremely unsettling. Once you spawn in The Twisted Side, every Imitator will immediately be aware of your location ad will find you no matter what. Its observed that they tend to almost fight over a wanderer in order to claim their memories. It is speculated that becoming a doppelganger is the equivalent to freedom for them as once they do their able to leave the Twisted Side.

Doppelgangers

These entities are extremely dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. They tend to lurk in darker areas of the town and in corners that people tend to glance over. They blend in very well as they look almost exactly the same as imitators except they look exactly like a person you know. This makes it easy for them to trick wanderers to follow them into The Twisted Side. Its noted that Doppelgangers can only target one person at a time. They will only appear as a Doppelganger to one person. If you are in a group then everyone else will be able to clearly see that they are a Twisted Imitator. They can speak perfect English and can even sound like the person they are imitating. Doppelgangers often take the form of someone you trust such as your parent, friend, or even sibling They are known to be fairly smart and would never take the form of someone you are travelling with, unless you are apart for long enough of a time.

Colonies and Outposts

The Happy Folk

  • The only known colony that resides here
  • They are extremely secretive and do not allow any new members. They will even go as far as to lead unsuspecting wanderers to possible areas where they may teleport to the Twisted Side. Although they are not know to be allied with Doppelgangers, they may unintentionally end up helping them.
  • The Happy Folk consist of members who have yet to be teleported to the Twisted Side.
  • Not much else is known about them but they are suspected to be people trapped from 1980s up to the 2000s.

Entrances and Exits

Entrances

Exits

  • By going into the backroom of the laundromat there is a rare change that you can clip into Level 423.
  • Going into a specific "closed" store in the mall you can be taken back to Level 1
  • If you attempt to order a vanilla milkshake enough times you may be sent to The Snackrooms
  • Attempting to walk to the end of the street may take you to The Metro although this method is not recommended as there is a high chance of being taken to The Twisted Side instead.
  • Activating the screen in theatre room 10 can take you to Level 18 but trying this is extremely dangerous as Doppelgangers are sometimes seen lurking there.
  • The only known exit from The Twisted Side is by touching a glowing balloon in the mall. This will lead you to Level Fun, although by the time you find this balloon you would have already had your memories taken. This makes it an easy trap.
