Level 4444 is the least visited place of the Backrooms. The only person who visited here was a fisherman during the Taiyuan period of the Eastern Jin Dynasty(AD376-AD396).

Because we know almost nothing about this level, we name it Level 4444 for the time being. We speculate that this may be the 4445th level of the Backrooms.

An imaginary image of The fisherman.

Description

Level 4444 is a big place. It's like the Frontrooms. The weather is always sunny. There is a long river. There is a mountain at the source of the river. There is a hole in the mountain. There will be a faint light in the hole. There is another village on the other side of the mountain. The village called "Peach Blossom Village".

The River

There is a river in Level 4444. There are a lot of peach trees on both sides. There are no other trees except peach trees. Peach blossoms on the peach trees on the east side of the river will fall, and peach blossoms on the peach trees on the west side of the river have just flowered. They look like that they are in different seasons. The water is clear, you can drink it directly.

The Mountain

The mountain is very tall. There are no plants on the mountain. There is a hole in the mountain. At first, the hole is so narrow that only one person can pass. Then the hole becomes bigger and bigger. After taking dozens of more steps, you can see a vast plain. And there is a small village on the plain. That is "Peach Blossom Village".

Peach Blossom Village

There are a few houses in this village. The houses are neat. The land here is very flat. There are many fertile fields, beautiful fountains, mulberry trees and bamboo shoots here. But maybe they can't be eaten. The road here is crisscross. Because of it that if you speak in the north of the village, people in the south of the village will hear very clearly. There are many "people" living there. We call them "Peachblossomers". Some of them works in the field. Some stay home and cook for their families. If you go to "Peach Blossom Village", they will treat you enthusiastically. And they will invite you to their homes. They will cook a lot of delicious meals for you.

Colonies and Outposts

Because no one has been here since the Eastern Jin Dynasty, there is no any colonies or outposts here.

Entities

According to historical records, we found that there is only one entity. We call it "Peachblossomers".

An imaginary image of Peachblossomers.

Peachblossomers

They live in "Peach Blossom Village". They seem very friendly because when you arrive here, they will invite you to their homes and cook something delicious for you. But there is something weird of them. It's that they said their ancestors brought their wives, children and neighbors to this isolated place during the Qin Dynasty(BC221-BC207), and never went out again. But what they wear is as like as people who lives out of "Peach Blossom Village" in Eastern Jin Dynasty. Because of it, we are not sure whether they are friendly or not. We are not sure where they come from, either.

Historical Records

A calligraphy work of The land of Peach Blossom.

We know about Level 4444 from a classical Chinese article. It was written by a pastoral poet in the Eastern Jin Dynasty named Tao Yuanming(AD365-AD427). His article The land of Peach Blossom is one of the most popular classical Chinese articles.

Contents(English Translation)

During the Taiyuan period of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, a man in Wuling county made a living by fishing. He followed the stream and forgot the distance. Suddenly he came across a peach blossom forest, which grew on both sides of the stream for hundreds of steps. There were no other trees in the middle. The flowers were fresh and beautiful, and the falling flowers were scattered on the ground one after another. The fisherman was very surprised by this (the view in front of him) and continued to sail forward to the end of the forest.

The end of the peach forest is the birthplace of the stream, so there is a mountain. There is a small hole in the mountain, which seems to be a little bright. So he got off the boat and went in through the hole. At first, the hole was so narrow that only one person could pass through. After taking dozens of steps, it suddenly became open and bright. (presented to him) a flat and wide land, neat rows of houses. There are also fertile fields, beautiful ponds, mulberry and bamboo forests and so on. The paths in the fields are crisscrossed and interlinked, and the crowing of chickens and dogs can be heard everywhere. People come and go farming and working in the fields. The clothes of men and women are exactly the same as those of the world outside the peach blossom garden. The old people and children are all comfortable and happy.

When the villagers saw the fisherman, they were very surprised and asked him where he came from. The Fisherman answered in detail. Some people in the village invited him to their home to entertain him with wine, chicken and cooking. When the people in the village heard that such a person had come, they all came to inquire about the news. They said that in order to avoid the war in Qin Dynasty, their ancestors led their wives, children and neighbors to this isolated place and stopped going out, so they cut off contact with people outside. They asked the fishermen what Dynasty they are now. They didn't know that there was the Han Dynasty, let alone the Wei and Jin Dynasties. The fisherman told them in detail what he knew one by one. After listening to it, they all lamented. The rest of the people invited the fisherman to their own homes, and all took out wine and rice to entertain him. The fisherman stayed for a few days and said goodbye to the villagers. The people in the village said to him, "Our place is not worth talking to people outside."

After the fisherman came out, he found his boat and went back along the old road, marked everywhere. He went to the prefectural city, went to the prefect and reported his experience. The prefect immediately sent someone to follow him to look for the marks made before. As a result, he lost his direction and could no longer find the way to the peach blossom garden.

Liu Ziji, from Nanyang, is an aspiring hermit. After hearing this, he happily plans to go. But it didn't come true and soon died of illness. Since then, no one has asked the road of Peach Blossom.

Strangeness

According to the article, we found that the fisherman is the only man who visited "Peach Blossom Village", but Tao Yuanming knew about it and recorded it. Maybe the things about the village are legends. But we had used a tool to verify the existence of this level. This level is really existential.

Entrances and Exits

Entrances

According to the article, the only way we found to enter this level is probably fishing in a river, forgetting the distance and time, meeting a peach blossom forest and moving on. But so far, we have not found a qualified place anywhere in the Frontrooms and anywhere in other Backrooms.

Exits

According to the article, we found that the fisherman left "Peach Blossom Village" by crossing the hole what he crossed at first. Maybe this is the only way out of Level 4444. Because we can't find any other ways to leave here. And we don't know whether we will reach the Frontrooms or other places after passing through the hole.
