Description

An image of an unknown location in Level 458. It is unknown what happened to the photographer.

Level 458 can best be described as a pizza parlor that is seemingly infinite in size. While it outwardly looks normal at first glance, with fresh pizzas out on display, one can immediately recognize that the level is not what it seems. What appear to be well-known logos of pizza joints from Earth when viewed from a distance are meaningless symbols up close. The menus only consist of crude lines or repeating sequences of lines and/or dots displayed alongside images. In some areas, the walls, ceiling and floor are visibly cracked with a thick, repugnant, yellowish liquid reminiscent of grease surrounding them. The deeper one goes into the level, the more cracks will appear and the more meaningless and abstract the logos and menus become. After a certain point, if you go deep enough, logos and menus will be blank.

There are two main types of rooms in Level 458. These types of rooms are known as 'The Eating Areas' and 'The Kitchens' respectively. The eating areas are the most common type of room in the level and typically consist of large spaces with low ceilings and tables and chairs laid out across them. The styles vary between them, though the most common style is Art Deco. The kitchens are, as the name implies, kitchens that one would see in any restaurant on Earth. While these areas are safer due to the fact that dubious pizzas are rarely found here, moundlings will occasionally make dens in these rooms. An easy way to tell if a kitchen has a moundling den is how it smells. If you get the overpowering smell of melted cheese, leave the area immediately. Many of the areas in the level are separated by doors. These doors range from standard wooden doors to glass revolving doors. The latter type doesn't always work, and if this occurs, you'll need to push it. Rooms are separated by long, winding corridors that, while fairly linear, tend to loop back on themselves and lead to dead ends.

Aside from the change in menus, the style of the rooms and the frequency of the cracks, as you go deeper into the level, the geometry of the rooms will start to change. At first, these changes are innocuous and can easily be passed off as a trick of the eye. The deeper you go, the more noticeable these changes become. At the halfway point between normal geometry and abstraction, the placement of the furniture will dramatically shift, with tables and chairs on ceilings and walls, furniture fused with surfaces in nonsensical manners and even pieces of furniture clipping into each other. Eventually, the geometry of the rooms will become non-Euclidean and look like something one might see in one of M. C. Escher's works. At this point, the furniture will range from curved, nondescript shapes to impossible objects which bear no resemblance to any piece of furniture. The point where the rooms of Level 458 fall into abstraction is known as the 'Belvedere boundary', and those who go beyond this boundary are never heard from again.

Entities

Level 458's inhabitants consists of several entities encountered from all across other levels of the Backrooms, but the level itself also has a fair share of native entities.

Dubious Pizzas

While these entities do indeed resemble pizzas at first glance, a closer look reveals that there is more to these pizzas than meets the eye. They always appear fresh as can be, nearly invisible steam coming off of them. However, the cheese and toppings slightly pulsate in a manner similar to a severe muscle cramp. Dubious pizzas can be a wide manner of different styles and varieties, with calzones, clam pies, Hawaiian pizzas, grandma pizzas and squid ink pizzas being identified. However, dubious pizzas are most commonly New York-style and lack toppings. The deeper one goes into Level 458, the more elaborate and numerous the toppings on dubious pizzas get.

If an entity, for example, a wanderer, attempts to touch or pick up the dubious pizza or gets too close to it, the entity strikes. It leaps at the unfortunate victim and latches on like a suction cup, usually on the face or hand area. This first lunge causes nearby dubious pizzas to spring into action and latch onto the victim as well, and in large enough quantities can cause the unlucky victim to be buried in a sometimes comically large pile of them. While the hapless victim is still alive, the dubious pizzas will begin to assimilate their target and duplicate themselves with the newfound mass. This process usually takes several hours to complete, and dubious pizzas are at their most vulnerable as they do this. Once nothing remains of the victim, both the original dubious pizzas and the new dubious pizzas will scatter or go back to their original positions, creeping like slugs as they go.

If no entities come along for dubious pizzas to attack for an extended period of time, these entities will undergo a process to better spread out in search of victims. Over the course of about three hours, a 'starved' dubious pizza will split into two identical individuals in a process mirroring mitosis of cells. One the dubious pizza is done dividing, the two new pizzas will slither away to new areas to inhabit.

Moundlings

If a wanderer or other entity somehow manages to subdue and kill a dubious pizza, the corpse would seem like a well-earned ration. However, even if a dubious pizza is slain and/or eaten or if one escapes an attack from one, simply making physical contact with a dubious pizza can prove deadly as its very matter is infectious to living tissue. Over a timespan of about a month, anyone who has eaten a dubious pizza will transform into a Moundling, an amorphous mass of dough, melted cheese, tomato sauce and various toppings. Unlike dubious pizzas, moundlings are actively hostile and will chase prey on any number of half-formed limbs at a speed similar to that of an adult man sprinting. Like dubious pizzas, moundlings merge with their prey, but for different reasons. Whereas dubious pizzas do it to propagate themselves, moundlings do it to add onto their own mass, growing bigger as they do. However, there is an upper limit to a moundling's size, which is usually around a ton in terms of weight. Once this limit is reached, the moundling will dissolve into enormous amounts of dubious pizzas, which disperse shortly after.

Moundlings have a tendency to form groups of up to ten individuals, although their activities display no apparent structure or communication between them. As a result, moundling groups should not be thought of as pack animals, but rather individuals in pursuit of some shared goals. These groups hunt in synchrony, usually in pursuit of large numbers of targets such as groups of wanderers. On occasion, moundling groups will join their bodies together to form conglomerates. These conglomerations move with staggering, unsteady steps, as though the mass struggles to hold itself together. After enough time spent in this conglomerated state, which is usually a day, the conglomerate will split apart into its constituent pack members.

Amoezzas

While the process of a dubious pizza dividing normally goes without a hitch, there are occasions where this process is flawed in some way or interrupted by an outside force. These aberrant individuals will continue to divide even if new victims are present. This eventually culminates in a dubious pizza failing to divide properly, resulting in two individuals stuck together. The pizza will continue to attempt dividing, but only generates more individuals stuck to it. This results in the creation of a new entity entirely. The Amoezzas.

While amoezzas typically only 'live' for up to a month, they grow exponentially and can cover enormous areas of the levels they are found in. These creatures are indiscriminate and will attack wanderers, dubious pizzas, moundlings, and even other entities that are in the immediate vicinity, assimilating their mass into their own if attacks are successful. The accumulation of heat can also cause amoezzas to heat up to boiling and even burning temperatures, with the largest of amoezzas setting their surroundings on fire simply by touching them. This increase of heat is also correlated to an amoezza's lifespan, with individuals nearing the end of their lifespan setting paper on fire simply by going within five feet of it. Other than that, amoezzas display no other signs of aging, but instead die suddenly, their forms peeling off of ceilings and walls and collapsing in one big heap. Because of their large size and their accumulation of heat, dead amoezzas will spontaneously catch fire in random areas, with these ignitions being more common at the very center of an amoezza's corpse. The corpses of these entities decay into nothing over the course of six months, emitting a smell over the course of the last four months that has been described as 'exceedingly foul' by those who have encountered an amoezza cadaver.

Jumbo Slice

Very little is known about the entity known as Jumbo Slice, but it is theorized to be spread throughout Level 458 inside its walls, ceilings and floors. Signs of activity from Jumbo Slice consist of the ground shaking, parts of the level unexpectedly swelling and cracks in the floor, walls and ceiling that are covered in a thin layer of grease. If one stands near, on top of or under the aforementioned cracks, a tendril of boiling cheese and tomato sauce will emerge from the hole and attack. If an attack is successful, the unfortunate victim is pulled into the crack, never to be seen again. Survivors of these attacks are left with severe burns and are typically covered in the same grease that lines the cracks.

Colonies and Outposts

There are no known colonies and outposts on this level.

Entrances and Exits

Entrances

Aside from noclipping here, there are two direct ways to access this level.

  • If you find a section of cave with oddly greasy walls in Level 8, go deeper. Eventually, you will find a door that leads to this level.
  • If you dive deep enough in the ocean in Level 457, you will fall unconscious and wake up on a table in this level.

Exits

While there is no real reliable way out of this level, any door you find in the level has a small chance of leading to a different level.
