Description
Level 472 is unstable — a time anomaly. In simple terms, this is an old clock shop — the entire room is in black and white, and any sense of time is lost while in the level. Every clock displays a different time; any time-telling electronic devices on your person will also display a time inconsistent with the time you entered the level. The wooden walls and fabric carpets seem inviting while the hundreds of clocks seem nauseating. Luckily, a wise old entity, taking the appearance of a human around age 70, exists to help guide wanderers out of the level while also taking the time to explain the level's backstory. He calls himself the Clocksmith, and he claims to have run this shop for approximately a few minutes.
Any time a clock strikes midnight, it makes a chime sound consistent with the clock model — digital clocks create a buzzing noise, grandfather clocks create a bell chime, and mechanical birds will pop out of cuckoo clocks. The moment you look away, the clock will disappear from existence, being replaced by a different clock in its place. The Clocksmith explains that this is a natural phenomenon — each clock has a 24-hour life span. They all are born when the previous clock strikes midnight and die when they strike midnight. In fact, everything in this level has a 24-hour life span — the walls, the floor, even the Clocksmiths themselves are replaced and reborn every 24 hours. This includes any wanderers in this level. They have a 24-hour period in this level before they are wiped out of existence and reborn; the countdown starts upon entry to this level.
Those who do not leave within 24 hours enter The Beyond. It is unclear what The Beyond is, but according to the Clocksmith, it is simply the inside of a black hole, an area of space-time where the laws of physics cease to exist. Clocks float everywhere but are motionless. All previous reincarnations of the Clocksmith, the wooden planks, and the carpet can be seen here, all motionless. All previous reincarnations of wanderers can be seen here, all motionless. Time essentially freezes for everyone and everything here.
Eventually, this clutter of objects known as The Beyond will become crowded, so it routinely performs a cleansing every month. Every object in the area simultaneously rips apart into the smallest quarks possible, leaving nothing but small specks of what appear to be dust in the area. A vacuum then appears to destroy the small particulate matter that remains; however, the vacuum's features are unknown. We do know from observations and experiments that the vacuum runs for five days, and during that time, it consistently ruptures the space-time continuum, forcing it to reset after the vacuum finishes its job. The ripple effect can be seen everywhere, disrupting electronic communications and databases.
Luckily, the Clocksmith will gladly show you an exit if you ask him for one, but provoke him and he'll automatically send you to The Beyond, where you will cease to exist.
He means no harm, but unfortunately, there is more to him than meets the eye.
Such information would be described here for the safety of wanderers, but the Clocksmith adamantly prohibits this. Attempt to do so, and he will rewind time back to the point right before you started editing this page and send you to The Beyond, no questions asked.
I hope you enjoy your time there. Or lack thereof.
Colonies and Outposts
The Timekeepers
The Timekeepers are a select group of individuals who consistently circumvent the 24-hour countdown of this level by continuously exiting the level on the 23rd hour before returning again to start the countdown over again. They are a small group of around 10 and their intentions are unknown, but we speculate that they want to harness the power of controlling time by studying this level's properties. A few members who failed to keep track of the countdown were lost to The Beyond, but The Timekeepers easily found replacements… who suspiciously looked exactly like the lost members.
Theories have circulated alleging that the Clocksmith himself is one of these Timekeepers, having already harnessed the power to control time. They suppose that the Clocksmith manipulates events such that they happen exactly the way he wants them to; if something happens in a way he did not intend for it to, he simply reverses time and rewrites fate to stop that event from happening. However, no evidence has been provided to support this.
(But… maybe the Clocksmith wants this page to say that…)
Entrances and Exits
Entrances
The Clocksmith has requested that the entrances not be listed. Any attempt to do so will result in the editor being sent to the Beyond.
Exits
Ask the Clocksmith. He'll show you an easy way out. It won't hurt…
