One skyscraper, taken after Event 481-A

Level 481 is the 481st level of the Backrooms. Be aware that entrance to Level 481 is considered impossible, and debate is underway over whether or not it should still be considered a Level.

Description

Level 481, between the date of discovery and Event 481-A, appeared to be an infinitely stretching patch of grassland. The weather was constantly sunny and hot, and the time constantly midday. No flowers or trees grew; just garden-grass. Any attempt to dig through Level 481's soil failed. The only defining features of Level 481 were several 'skyscrapers'. These buildings were created from the same material used to build skyscrapers in the Frontrooms, and, when viewed from inside, matched the appearance of an office/paperwork building, with desks, powered-down computers, and printers being a common occurrence in each floor. There were approximately five skyscrapers for every square-mile of grassland, infinitely repeating. Every skyscraper also appeared to be unending in height, with higher floors being accessible via a central column of stairs in each building.

Due to the lack of entities or dangerous properties, this Level, once discovered, was considered a safe place for travellers to rest. A permanent base of 15 MEG members was set up in the skyscraper closest to the Level's entrance, to help and trade with anyone who arrived in Level 481. At its peak, this Level had at least 85 living citizens.

Event 481-A occurred on 7/1/200█. At about 4AM, rain started to fall in Level 481. Most citizens of the Level did not take this as a threat, and camera footage showed some citizens setting up makeshift rain-nets, to catch the limited resource. This light rain continued until 11AM, when the rain began to grow heavier. Small puddles had formed on the ground, and the temperature had dropped a small amount. By 2PM, this weather had turned into serious rainfall, with the temperature dropping noticeably, and clouds starting to appear in the sky. Due to the flat nature of the Level, slight flooding had begun, with camera footage showing most citizens retreating into the skyscrapers for shelter. By 6PM, flooding had become serious, with the bottom level of most skyscrapers completely underwater. It seemed to be coming apparent that citizens would not be able to exit whatever skyscraper they had chosen to take shelter from the rain in. By midday the following day, the bottom six levels of each skyscraper had been flooded. Footage shows at least two citizens jumping from their towers, trying to swim to the exit. The fate of these individuals is currently unknown.

The updated description for Level 481 after Event 481-A is shown below.

Level 481 appears to be an infinitely stretching area of water. Several 'skyscrapers' appear to poke out of the water, also appearing infinite in height. Due to incredible amounts of rain, the water level rises by approximately thirty-five metres (equal to seven skyscraper floors) every twenty-four hours. It is believed that at least sixty-two individuals are trapped in Level 481's skyscrapers. Due to the nature of the Level, trapped individuals are forced to constantly move up floors in order to avoid the water and remain safe. Most information about what happened to Level 481 come from old MEG archives and recovered notebooks/cameras.

Colonies and Outposts

Before Event 481-A, the only known colony was 'MEG Level 481', a group of 15 MEG members who were friendly to travellers and open for discussion and trade.

After Event 481-A, this colony was disbanded. Due to the nature of this Level, colonies are considered impossible to set up.

Entrances and Exits

Entrances

Before Event 481-A, Level 481 had entrances in Level 477 and 478, in the form of metal doorways that would appear in both Levels at random. After Event 481-A, these doorways have disappeared from both Levels, and entrance to Level 481 is currently considered impossible.

Exits

Before Event 481-A, similar metal doorways would appear in the floor of Level 481 that would lead to both Level 482 and 484. After Event 481-A, these exits have been considered impossible to reach, and exiting Level 481 is currently considered impossible.

More Information

After radio messages sent from The Hub were not answered by Level 481's MEG group, a team of six explorers were sent to a previous entrance to the Level. They discovered that the metal doorway had been closed and locked, with water leaking from underneath the door's gap. Several notebooks and a camera were lying in the puddle. The notebooks contained the diaries of several survivors, and the camera contained thirty-one images of Event 481-A and its aftermath. The information located in these items was used to finally discern what happened to Level 481.

Below is one excerpt from a recovered notebook:

i could hear again today. they were talking again. i couldn't make out words. i could make out desperation
i remembered how to crawl. i woke in the night and crawled over to his bag and stole apples. in the morning they
they are killing each other for food
there is nothing left for us. my feet are cold
they think i am dead. they looked at me and said forget
they have left. i see just two people left in the room. i am alive. my ankles are cold
when you are hungry. you wouldn't be angry. stop being angry
there is one left in the room. i am not hungry. i am alive. my knees are cold
what is the time. it's thunder thunder. where is apple
ate apple. where is time? my waist is cold
eat eat eat. [Illegible] want need have go please eat meat eat apple eat
my chest is cold
my neck is cold. so hungry
greenbluegreenbluegreengreenblueblue cold chin
i remember food and green and blue and number and peace
