Level 494 is the 495th level of the Backrooms.

Description

Level 494 is a well-lit maze of dull gray concrete walls and steel girders similar to a refurbished mine shaft. Hallways are claustrophobic, only around four feet wide, and have high ceilings with gas lamps. Rooms are apparent but rare, and are usually cramped and empty besides pipes in the walls; rarer still, doors can be found, which lead to other levels. There are twelve documented rooms and three documented doors.

Distantly, wanderers of this level can hear the sounds of heavy mechanical sounds and waterphone singing, though no source of these sounds have been located.

Strangest of all about Level 494 is that it is repeating. There is a clear end to the repeating pattern before another set of identical halls and rooms will unfold; therefore, watchful wanderers have plotted the layout of this level and found determinable entrances and exits.

This level is largely safe, save for a single indigenous entity which is passive unless provoked.

Entities

There is only one entity residing in Level 494: Entity 377. Entity 377 is a Class 2 entity which roams the halls of Level 494 with seemingly no direction. It resembles a large ape which walks on its knuckles, and is colored pitch black. It is completely passive unless exposed to physical harm or loud noise, in which case it will attack ferociously. It has claimed the lives of three wanderers to date. Entity 377 has not been seen on any other level thus far, and it is believed to be entirely unique to this level.

Colonies and Outposts

The RHW

The RHW (Repeating Hall Wanderers) is a colony of around 30 people, all of which claim to have entered Level 494 from The Main Nine. They have created a map of this level, though only one physical copy exists. This map divides the level into nine quadrants: top left, primary left, bottom left; top middle, primary middle, bottom middle; finally, top right, primary right, and bottom right. Each quadrant has distinct features and rooms. It can be hard to tell the quadrants apart once the repetition border is crossed.

Entrances and Exits

Entrances

  • According to members of the RHW, each level in The Main Nine has an entrance to Level 494. This is unlikely to be true, but no research has been done as of yet.
  • There is an entrance in Level 636. Strangely, these levels seem to be connected.

Exits

  • The first door, in one of the top left quadrant halls, leads to Level 636.
  • The second door, in a room of the bottom middle quadrant, leads to Level 23.
  • The final door, in the primary middle quadrant, leads to Level 48.
