Level 520 is the 521st level of the backrooms, discovered on March 4th, 2002.

Description

Level 520.1

The view from a ledge, taken by the M.E.G second climbing attempt on 520.1

Level 520.1 is a mountain that juts out of the water in the middle of a seemingly endless ocean. The mountain has little more than a lighthouse on top of its peak, with a peroulis road leading up to it. It is estimated that the mountain could be as high as Olympus Mons. Curiously, there is no snow on top, the climate is stable, and the air is fine to breathe. However, the winds are unbearable, blowing over everything that attempts to climb it with tornadic winds exceeding 2500 kph (1553 mph) . It is unknown how the lighthouse stays in place.

Attempts to Climb

  • The first attempt to climb the mountain by the M.E.G reached about halfway before being forced to turn around due to the increasing wind speed.
  • The second attempt to climb, also by the M.E.G, ended up with much the same fate, although they did manage to take this photo to the left from about 10 miles up.
  • The third attempt to climb, by the Backroom Colonists, made it about a quarter of the way up before deciding to set up an outpost closer to the base of the mountain
  • Artist's depiction of what the lighthouse might look like up close

The fourth attempt, once again by M.E.G made it around 15 miles up, nearly 2/3 of the way to the peak using advanced climbing and wind gear.
  • A fifth attempt to climb is currently being planned by the M.E.G

Level 520.2

One of the many holes in Level 520.2

Level 520.2 is the endless ocean that surrounds the mountain. The ocean floor is riddled with holes and ledges that go on as far as the eye can see. There have been several missions to try and find the bottom of these holes, none of which have succeeded.

The sea is usually warm, and it has been confirmed to be salty. During the day, the water is usually calm with few surf-sized waves. But at night, a storm engulfs the whole sea and island and it begins raining like a hurricane. The waves swell to huge sizes and crash over the rocky shore. Some people even report strange growling noises coming from the holes during this stormy period.

Clear Nights

There is a very rare chance that there will be a clear night, revealing the moon. Most of the time, it looks like the moon in the Frontrooms, but blue. On an even rarer occasion, the moon will be red and the waves will crash into the rocky shore as if there was a storm, but there is no clouds. There are clear growling sounds coming from the ocean at this time. See the "Exits" section of this page for an important warning.

Entities

This level is mostly devoid of entities, with very few rummaging about. However, some speculate that there might be a great monster below the waves.

Colonies and Outposts

There are 3 major colonies/outposts in this level

M.E.G Base Camp

This is where the majority of climbing expeditions were launched from, they are usually friendly and open to trade.

M.E.G Diving Center

Designed to look like a giant diving bell, This is not only a major library where a lot of what we know about the backrooms as a whole is held in written form, but also where nearly all the diving adventures start. They are usually friendly and open to trade.

Backroom Colonist's Resort

A fun place to relax after a hard day of exploring the backrooms, this is one of the few pleasant places to be in the backrooms. Not only is the majority of this colony friendly, they are hiring!*
