Level 54, often known as "Stairwell Of Spirals" is the 55th level of the Backrooms.

Level 54 is an expansive spiral stairway that extends to an undetermined elevation with varying appearances distinct from each of its entrants. The photographs and details given by each traveler exhibit how the level appears unique to everyone arriving; the place's main aspects show no indication of anyone having previously been or visited there, and there are no reports of two people encountering the same level's appearance. Every area of the location remains untouched and possesses an invariant design, with stairs and building structures all consistent. The building is constructed entirely of the same concrete and resembles an urban structure spanning the 1960s to the current era. The textiles within are remarkably immaculate, leaving no trace of mildew or deterioration on their surfaces.
Safety features on stairs raise concerns about their effectiveness in safeguarding individual well-being. A typical scenario involves an iron leak enclosing the open well around the stairwell. For instance, the leak's altitude is considerably lower than the permitted height limit, and some are broken and threatening to collapse. Stiff and brittle stair steps' surfaces are likely in recently cleaned condition, allowing for slip if caution is not taken. Falling into the stairwell void may lead to acute injuries or death. Therefore, one must be careful when ascending. Accessory features on each stairwell step include anti-slip stair treads and stair nosing[1]. Few locations may have alarm switches and fire extinguishers attached; attempts to trigger a fire alarm appear hampered by the absence of a sound source.
No light fixtures are visible within the stairwell; instead, a vibrant window on a wall fills the space. The window extends upward, lining up with the wall as every facet of the staircase remains illuminated by external light. All windows exhibit a blurred and uncleared nature, rendering it inconceivable to detect the light's origin[2] or the other side's aspect. Several accounts exist of people witnessing a city view in daylight via a window. The outside view lingers constantly with no movement, including a day-night cycle, and no life appears. Furthermore, guiding one to a higher floor will not alter the perception of a high sky as it stays at the same altitude. Others claim that the viewpoint changes but eventually redirects to the prior one.

Wall air conditioners and vents installed in specific places keep the atmosphere frigid. Any determination of where the opening vents end proved unfeasible. Many described a slight breeze from a miniature open portion of the duct. Due to its narrow aperture and impenetrable steel panel[3], traversing across the vent is impractical. Numerous vents and air conditioners may be erected in the same spot to induce breeze flow down the stairwell. The air conditioner generally sets at 20°C or drops to 10°C, making temperatures excessively cold. Moreover, individuals receive a bitter and forceful wind from the stairwell void, presumably from a very elevated location.
When one enters, they will find themselves in a large, circular region with stairs in the middle that branch off into an endless stairwell. The room features a stairwell design and incorporates the exact wall and floor textiles. It tends to be primarily empty, with few furniture and items like tiny seats, a vending machine, and a fountain set in the center—the fountain is perceptible when gazing from the stairwell void. The absence of room lighting makes the interior gloomy.
Despite the seemingly random nature of Level 54 upon arrival, its appearance is affected by a variety of distinct traits for each traveler. In-depth research and interviews with those who visit Level 54 suggest that the manner the level presents is related to the wanderer's dominant thoughts and emotions. Individuals who were depressed and suffering at the time described seeing a dimly lit shadowy staircase with smallish windows that allowed in faint light. Moreover, some stairways are in an archaeological design evoking a bygone era. Such as vintage furniture and decorations, they appear in disarray, implying upkeep and replacement.
““I vividly recall a moment when the stairs seemed seemingly interminable, perpetually repeating themselves. After climbing to a height, a reinforced entrance beckoned, apparently holding the promise of discovery. I followed its path out of curiosity, regardless of whether it wasn't where I desired it to be. A blast of frigid air preceded me as I turned the handle, with an empty circular space lying beyond.”

Through the never-ending liminal spiral steps, I became enthralled by the ethereal that unveiled itself with every step. The endless spiral gently surrounded the vast open space of the stairs, creating a mesmerizing climb that repeated in a refined.
Upon reaching a significant elevation, my gaze fell on a modest yet fortified entrance. I pulled open the door and was met with a blast of cool, pure air that signaled entry into an intriguingly empty circular room. Gently glowing lights and outstanding vibrant soda machines filled the space with vacant seating that elevated the overall ambiance. The pièce de résistance, however, was an outstanding illumination emanating from the upper ceiling at the room's center—a hypnotic glow that manufactured an enticing atmosphere accented by a sophisticated spiral staircase surrounding the room's periphery.
The refreshing air flowing across the upper levels of the staircase void brought back memories of crisp winter nights contributing to the allure of the ascension. Despite the perpetual descent of the steps, the setting encompasses me with an overwhelming sense of peace. I feel remarkably at ease in these unfamiliar surroundings, illuminated by the soft light through the windows. A dense fog wraps the outside world, lending an impression of mystique. The absence of buildings or people outside creates the sensation of staring into a fog-shrouded abyss of emptiness.

The silence within the vast expanse was profound, occasionally disturbed by the murmur of a chilly wind—a subtle reminder of solitude. The continually ascending staircase becomes a metaphorical conduit to an unknown destination. My eyes, drawn to the soft, hazy light overhead, suggested an unrealized future. The remoteness of this spot becomes genuine as the place is met only by the wind's responding echoes.
The staircase stretches eternally upward within the stairwell's depths. My visions try to seek toward the summit, yet there is no definite destination—only an indistinct mist of soft light. It's like staring into an unfulfilled potential pit wherein nobody can ever reach our ultimate goal. The stairs became an entryway into a realm of dreams in this timeless place. A solitary sanctuary where the steps leading back to reality end exquisitely.
The spiral staircase continued with its poetic movement and round elevation. It reflected a multitude of questions regarding this enigmatic institution. With these questions lingering, my ascent persists. Is this staircase truly bringing me to new discoveries? The mysteries grew with each step, and my expedition through the liminal realm continued—an odyssey propelled by curiosity and the allure of the unknown.
- James-Théophile Pichard, 06/06/2006
The staircase consists of landings[4] that oppose the windows' placement. Every landing possesses a door. Occasionally, one can stumble across stairs without landing, only doors against the wall. Beyond these doors is an assortment of random chambers, each with distinctive textile textures, furniture, and design schemes. There's no indication whether the two rooms are identical, and each gate opens into different areas.

The Indoor Form manifests itself as a network of interconnected rooms and hallways, forming a complex labyrinth. The interior construction typically takes the outline of an intricate labyrinth built up of a network of affiliated spaces and halls. The entire structure contains various textiles, including metal, concrete, and plaster. Rooms and hallways are irrationally adjusted in an arbitrarily designed and bizarre layout. The space has small decorative pieces and furnishings. Particular locations might feature several identical objects throughout the area.
Notably, the architectural layout adheres to conventional Euclidean geometry, lacking inherent non-Euclidean features. The location's spatial dimensions are constrained, exhibiting a finite extent that spans from one to ten square miles. Attempts to venture beyond the area's limited range will lead to impassable barriers. Any stairway structures extending to upper floors will descend to a dead-end ceiling since the chamber lacks upper space or a second story, while a miniature crawlspaceis inappropriate for any visitor may be apparent beyond the ceiling.

The Outdoor Form is a massive, box-shaped chamber constructed of smooth concrete or plaster. The room presents itself in an authentic external setting or provides a panoramic sky view. The room's walls and ceiling are an array of outdoor wallpapers that depict various moods of the day and night sky, substituting for real nature. Occasionally, the chamber may install an enormous monitor with an overview of clouds and skylights on the ceiling. These wavelengths provide the observer with a simulated outside atmosphere, nearly identical to the actual one. Few travelers report that some rooms' entire space appears in different hues.
The chambers vary in size and height, and no structure or construction extends beyond the room's boundary limit. The enormous box room mimics and resembles multiple kinds of outdoor environment. Any natural resources, such as plants and other flora inhabiting the space, are artificially established. The primary light source is an LED light fixture mounted on the ceiling. Particular areas lack illumination sources that outturn in pitch black. A place may also resemble a cityscape with various buildings present; these structures are limited in size and do not extend beyond the room's size. Certain interior spaces might be considered the Outdoor Form for a clear perception of being inside a massive rectangular room cover surrounding the region, including an expansive play area or a gigantic warehouse.
Many stated that multiple chambers resemble random levels in The Backrooms, imitating specific levels within that context. These rooms exhibit distinguishing qualities that make them recognizable. Depending on the room, there may be differences between the expected features and the actual representation of the intended level. Additionally, instances arise where rooms adopt a hybrid composition, combining elements from two distinct levels. Many suggest that every room on Level 54 is replicated, and an unidentifiable room is the result of a difference in possessions or undiscovered levels.

The picture illustrates an extensive corridor with smooth white concrete walls and gray paint patterns, several doors positioned on the walls on both sides, gray carpeting on the floor, numerous electric outlets on the wall, LED lighting suspended from the ceiling, and an exit sign.
Similarity: Level 21

The picture illustrates a lengthy corridor with several crosswalks and monochromatic yellow wallpaper; the farthest portions of the corridor seem tan in tone. The carpet has a beige tint, yet it is orderly and possesses a pattern. The illumination is fluorescent lighting alongside ceiling tiles. Two metal-reinforced doors on the wall resemble those in Level 1. Because of the picture's monochromatic yellow tone and tan tint, one might assume that this chamber represents the combination of Level 0.
Similarity: Level 0

The picture illustrates an extended hallway with a series of hung pipes and cables stretching on the ceiling. The wall consists of brick and painted white. Crates, several boxes, and other objects visible on the wall's side. The general design and layout of the chamber are remarkably similar to those of Level 3.
Similarity: Level 3

The picture illustrates a large yard with plain grass and a few surrounding flora, including bushes and trees. A concrete wall surrounded the area with a fake sky view.

Level 54 hosts an extraordinary phenomenon called "The Abyss". When a person approaches a massive amount of stairs' flights, the phenomenon will manifest—it is unlikely to happen instantly when one initially enters the level. The circular chamber is where the phenomenon takes place. If an individual peeked into the stairwell void during the phenomenon effecting[5], they would see a tiny dot representing an abyss growing on the room's floor. The dot will expand one inch at a time until it fills the circular room's floor, turning it into an abyss. Abyss frequency is predominantly dark and may appear in white or gray hues.
Despite the phenomenon happening, most visitors continue traipsing across the place without realizing its contents. Due to the elevation, they achieve this by ascending a vast number of stairs, to the extent that one's eyesight is unable to perceive the below region when gazing via the staircase void. It was difficult to tell whether the abyss had occurred or whether the place remained the same. If the phenomena materialize and an individual endeavors to descend the stairway to the bottom. When they extend within an appropriate distance of the abyss, the abyss gradually recedes[6] over time. Once this happens, the same events won't recur if they attempt to erect additional ones.
A person is solely allowed to contact the abyss by plunging from a height into the stairway gap. Those who fall into the abyss report a pitch-black void upon entering the abyss. After a while, their falling speed will slow down, taking them to arbitrary Backroom levels. Interviews with experienced individuals seem to have led them to diverse, nonspecific levels; nonetheless, many cases seem to have led them to more risky levels, whereas there aren't any reports of anyone reaching highly secure levels. Note that replicating these actions is not advisable because of the risk of being severely wounded and death[7].

1.0““In the core of this swirling stairway of existence, a seemingly peculiar phenomenon occurs—a liminal space that seems to transcend the confines of reality. The endless staircase, a maze-like structure transcending comprehension, time, and space, lies within this place.”

Upon arrival, the sound of water rushing and splashing greeted my ears. My gaze turned to the tableau—a pristine round wall with a water fountain adorning its walls, wherein the initial sound originated. Its gentle cadence weaved through the atmosphere as I approached the threshold of the liminal space. The sound of water flowing reminds me of a sparkling pool somewhere. The soft illumination from a distant point suffused the space with a mellow glow, casting delicate shadows that seeped along the edges of the circular room's walls.

In this setting, the furniture stood as if its sophisticated lines signaled me. With only a seat and a glass table with a pristine sheen standing in silence communion within, I could understand the place was remarkably isolated, a sanctuary untouched by time—a secret hideaway waiting for wanderers to find. I receive an overwhelming feeling of being in a solitary dream, and the murmur of the waves keeps everything peaceful and quiet. It reminds me of an image of a comfortable, tranquil break room.
The spiral staircase delicately ascends to an elevated circular vestibule, lit by celestial radiance filtering through the ceiling aperture, akin to a radiant spotlight surrounding the chamber below. Gazing upward into the space where the railings meet, I'm confronted with the illusion of an unending, winding staircase, beckoning anyone into the boundless expanse. With the limitless possibilities of comprehension, this stairway represents an odd nature of our world. Its soaring spires reach into the distance, and its elaborate construction creates a captivating tapestry of geometric designs and patterns.

As I progressed up the staircase, I vividly noticed the solitary light source emanating from an outstanding expanse of glass—a window in the stairwell that served as the only light source within its unfathomable depths. As I gazed out the window, I was surrounded by towering peaks and many skylines. However, at the midpoint of this cityscape, there was a menacing stillness—a lack of vitality that reverberated through the empty roads and quiet streets. Glancing out at this eerie cityscape, I witnessed the austere facades of buildings and the twisting asphalt path cutting through the terrain. I couldn't discern any traces of civilization. It seemed like a city that existed in my vivid imagination, an endless ghostly metropolis glimpsed frozen in time.
I was aware the window was a fake view of a manufactured cityscape, but I continued to glance through it. I believe its illusory panorama acted as a loneliness that enveloped my surroundings. I became overwhelmed with emptiness while alone in this eerie nature, with only my thoughts as a companion. But despite the isolation, I find this odd aesthetic, this atmosphere, and this place appealing and tranquil.
1.1Winds blast over the picturesque stairwell, a spiral of steps frozen in time, for it to repeat eternally behind. The brilliant, immaculate light illuminates the sign that was supposed to be an exit but never had one. Ascending in a circle, passing hundreds of thousands of wall bricks, with its mystery lingering in this place, awaits one to find. The surroundings left me with no warmth, with a cold breeze flowing throughout the room; the freezing air seeped into my bones.
Each step resonated with an overwhelming feeling of significance as if I were traversing the fabric of existence itself. Shadows seep over the surfaces in an appealing waltz of light and darkness, evoking an odd setting with concealed realities that remain barely above perception. As I gaze up into the stairwell emptiness, all I see is a shimmering fog on top, leaving no way to grasp for myself. With each passing second, my senses are overwhelmed with otherworldly sensations.
Staring down into the stairway void, I noticed an unfamiliar white light that seemed to be stalking me from a distance. I can't tell, but perhaps something is happening, or it is all an illusion. Its shape steadily grows, drawing my attention to the white glow of the abyss as it continuously expands. No life, no food, no hope; maybe it was urging me to go, I wasn't sure—but I made my decision...

Notice and Instructions:
Level 54 is awaiting further designation as Impresario Class Priority as it is currently under investigation and analysis. If you have suddenly been assigned to Level 54, please read the following document.
Reason: The nature of Level 54 may accompanied by its anomalous and undiscovered properties.
Protocol: Further exploration and documentation of Level 54 with human beings may proposed to end owing to several missing cases of travelers within Level 54, despite the level being determined to be safe and verified repeatedly.
““The Point of No Return is something considered a joke. But as the years went by, it gradually became scarier and more genuine. It make us and everyone else growing quite concerned. It got to the point where we had to treat this matter seriously regardless of whether it used to be humorous.”
— Jose M. Dunn

The Point of No Return refers to a phenomenon named by wanderers whereby a person becomes imprisoned within a level. After some point, when one helms in Level 54, they allegedly claim the entrances become inapproachable, compelling them to seek other exits since the place has few means of escape that pose a remote likelihood. Moreover, the place lacks commodities for anyone to endure, such as food, water, and other necessities. Further examination and studies reveal that most nomads in Level 54 lack enough supplies and preparation for an extended time due to wanderers not acknowledging traversing at other levels.
Because contact with the abyss can lead to an escape, many decided to dive into the stairwell gap when the phenomenon was happening. As a result of this negligent action, multiple individuals suffered severe injuries and death. Others presume to perish from starvation and dehydration after remaining without supplies. Said circumstances are accountable for numerous cases of missing persons and fatalities. Throughout the 1990s, travelers reported coming across corpses that came from Level 54, with a total of more than twenty. These dead bodies have severe fractured bones in several body parts.
Psychological dangers are unclear at Level 54 and are under investigation. The possible hypothesis is that all cases are the consequence of mass hysteria[8], while others believe that the level possesses minor psychological risks that only affect those in poor health or suffering from mental illness.

An anomalous traveler died tragically after falling through the stairway's opening on Level 54. An individual brutally slammed into the ground and crawled out of the entrance. Afterward, a group noticed the person and brought him to the M.E.G. base for emergency medical attention. Unfortunately, the severe fall affected the man's brain and led him to lose his life during medical treatment. An official said that before he passed away, he mumbled multiple times. "It's the only way to salvation," a quote repeated by the person.

Following the initial incident, which occurred in or around 1973, the narrative was repeated and disseminated; it became the most discussed and intriguing topic throughout the M.E.G. base and among other travelers. The victim's known person was questioned and interrogated several times before concluding that the victim didn't have an awful condition or suffer from mental illnesses. This raised many questions about what was happening. Eventually, the case ended up inferring that the victim committed suicide by being dragged into the stairwell void after climbing to a high elevation. Furthermore, the level has existed since 1934, and it appears to be safe with no concrete evidence of any hazard, alongside no prior reports of travelers dying inside the level.
Between the 1980s and 1990s, Level 54 hosted an unexpected increase in the number of persons who perished and disappeared, with some dead from falling from high places. Several corpses arise at random levels with bone fractures in numerous parts of the body, and a handful of them have the victim's known individual affirming their identities that they last appeared on Level 54. M.E.G. and other travelers have concerns regarding this data, as they may speculate that the level has altered and may be hazardous. From the 1980s to the present, the group asserted to have sent members to the level fourteen times. Nevertheless, despite extensive exploration and documentation, there are no notices of unusual occurrences or details, as the level has remained unchanged throughout the ages.

At first, M.E.G. concealed the details of these bizarre instances, fearing many might imitate similar dangerous actions. However, it turned out ineffective as reports of missing persons continued to advance. Until the early 2000s, M.E.G. disclosed the horrifying circumstances underlying this safe level and endeavored to follow protocol to prevent anyone from accessing it. Although fewer individuals are dying or disappearing within the level nowadays, a higher percentage of travelers are nevertheless probable to enter in hopes of achieving the level's height limitation as Level 54 is currently ironically a hotspot for wanderer traffic, as more than 5% of wanderers have noted desiring to visit the level at some point. The most widely accepted acknowledgment of this deadly incident emerges from the mass hysteria, whereby, after one effect, more individuals prefer to replicate without clarification.
M.E.G. currently classifies the level as safe, pending confirmation of the previously unknown event occurring within the level. Despite this, Level 54 has moved from class 0 to class 1.
- Finding a spiral staircase at a random level—generally a safe level—will lead to this level. The staircase presents the same design and textiles as the level where one is currently on. However, one will notice that the stairwell is remarkably high, and if an individual manages to reach the top, they will encounter a reinforced door leading to this level.
- Reinforced doors on Level 1, Level 4, Level 5, and Level 11 may lead to the circular chamber on this level. If the gateway goes unnoticed, eventually, the entry will disappear when no one is looking or paying attention. However, the entryway is only visible when a person ventures out alone with no additional individuals in the area. Attempting to access the level with a group will result in the entry disappearing.
- In The Ruthless Selva biome of Level 427, one may rarely encounter a staircase deep within the biome. There are several staircases with varying appearances, but the most common are spiral, curved, and straight stairs. Climbing up to the top of these stairs will send one here via noclipping.
- In Level 511, noclipping through any staircase will rarely send one here.
- The same entrance that one previously used to enter the level can also serve as an exit—noted that one sometimes may appear at a different location but still on the same level.
- The phenomenon appears as an abyss; interacting with the abyss will send one to a random level.
- With very little probability of opening the door, one will find a small empty room with another set of short spiral stairs. Climbing out of the steps will lead to a random level.

Footnotes
- ↑ Even though the purpose behind its use is to lessen the likelihood of accidents, many suggest that stair nosing might contain anomalous features that safeguard people from tripping and falling. Study reveals that it can augment friction and result in abrupt cessation of object movement while preserving stability and preventing damage.
- ↑ Additional research indicates that window light is comparable to fluorescent bulbs' spectrum.
- ↑ Any deterioration with tremendous force leads to minor damage to the steel.
- ↑ Landings in a stair is a level floor or platform constructed at a location where the direction of stairs changes, between flights of the stair, or at the top of stair flight.
- ↑ Even yet, many people neglect to observe the phenomenon's progression since it tends to happen while someone isn't paying attention to the stairway emptiness and only becomes apparent when the chasm has taken over the whole level.
- ↑ The abyss will shrink faster than its growth rate.
- ↑ Surprisingly few people attempt to do so (Point of No Return,) and as time passes, more individuals tend to copy the prior person's occurrence.
- ↑ Mass hysteria (mass psychosis) is a social phenomenon where a group of people develop similar symptoms that do not have an identifiable physical cause, such as an illness.
