Level 702, also known as Indigo Dreams, is the 703rd level of the Backrooms. It was discovered on 01/12/2022, and resembles a seemingly infinite underground mall/shopping center bathed in a deep indigo hue.
Initial Discovery
Level 702 was first discovered by a group of five wanderers who subsequently decided to settle down upon realizing the level was safe. As time wore on more people arrived and decided to stay, gradually building the colony into what it is today. Contact with M.E.G. has yet to be established.
Description
An image of one of Level 702's many storefronts.
Level 702 takes the appearance of an infinite underground maze of hallways, food courts, and stores, all styled after your average Midwestern shopping center or strip mall. This network is permeated by an indigo light, which itself appears to be emitted by the fixtures dotting the ceiling, while speakers situated throughout the complex play what can only be described as an incredibly pleasing mix of lo-fi and vaporwave. Wanderers that have visited this level have described it as "incredibly peaceful", "deeply relaxing", and "nostalgically comforting".
There are several kiosks placed at regular intervals throughout this level, typically near storefronts or in the middle of food courts, though these do not dispense information like the regular machines of the Frontrooms do. Instead they deposit bottles of almond water - seemingly free of charge - in a variety of flavors such as mint & licorice, original, and coconut. These kiosks will do so even if they lack the appropriate slot for a beverage to pass through. How they accomplish this feat remains a mystery, though some form of spatial warping or teleportation is suspected thanks to multiple accounts in which a wanderer selected a drink and turned their head, only to hear glass clatter and see their drink sitting at their feet when they turned back around.
In regards to the stores and courts themselves, they are laid out exactly as one would expect their Frontroom counterparts to be, and fully powered at that (although the exact source of this power is not known). These stores range from small-time boutiques to big name retail outlets with the occasional arcade thrown in, while the courts are vast expanses of polished linoleum littered with empty tables, semi-circular benches, and the odd fake bush or tree. A series of restaurants ring the exterior of each court, and fresh meals appear fully assembled in each at random intervals. Finally, the hallways and corridors that bridge these spaces are often wide enough to allow several groups of people to travel in either direction at once, be they standing abreast or using a vehicle.
To date no entities have been discovered on this level, though numerous wanderers have reported seeing manikins in some of the shops moving just out of the periphery of their vision. It is not known for certain, however, whether these are actual entities or merely the products of several overworked minds.
Colonies & Outposts
There is a single colony on this level comprised of approximately 20 individuals - not accounting for unknown outliers - going by the name of Maller's Rest. Its inhabitants are usually friendly unless provoked or attacked, and offer refuge and supplies to wanderers that pass through the level on their way to parts unknown.
Notable Discoveries
- It has been found that the music played on this level has a sanity restoring effect, one that steadily increases in potency the longer a person is exposed to it.
- Additionally, while there is no real day/night cycle to speak of, the lights on this floor will dim significantly every 6 hours - plunging the area into near-complete darkness. These periods last for around 8 hours on average, and provide ample opportunity for wanderers to catch some shuteye.
- Finally, there are multiple motorized scooters and carts scattered about the level that allow for rapid and convenient transportation of people and goods. Although they run off of what looks to be regular old batteries, these vehicles never actually run out of charge.
Entrances & Exits
Entrances
- The easiest way to enter Level 702, regardless of what level you are currently on, is by finding and entering a steel door bathed in indigo light. It should be noted that these doors appear at random, and that their presence in any given level isn't guaranteed.
- There is a very small chance of ending up here when no-clipping from level to level.
Exits
- To exit this level, all a wanderer has to do is make use of a changing room inside one of the stores. This will result in the aforementioned individual falling asleep and waking up on the next level.
