Level 74 is the 75th level of the Backrooms.
An image of Level 74.
Description
Level 74 is a small plot of land resembling a rundown yard, surrounded by a fence. The level's exterior seemingly has no remarkable features except a shed near one of the edges. Vegetation and vines cover most of Level 74, giving a notably “overgrown” appearance. The fence surrounding the proximity of the level stands approximately 1.92 meters high, but an anomalous effect becomes apparent once one attempts to climb it. The fence will seem to elongate upward, infinitely, whilst being climbed. This makes it impossible to see above the fence or escape the yard. Climbing back down the fence will show the fence as normal. From the outside, the shed is a typical rusting metal structure, overtaken by vines growing upon it. Part of the shed’s roof has collapsed, presumably from weathering.
If the intact right door of the shed is opened, rather than a typical shed interior, the interior will lead to a massive warehouse-type building of indeterminate size. This non-Euclidean space is vastly larger than the outside of the shed, spanning an unknown, possibly illimitable amount of space. Industrial-sized lights hang upon wires from the high ceiling, giving off a fluorescent glow. A loud electric buzz, akin to that of Level 0, can be heard from each fixture.
Colonies and Outposts
There is one recorded outpost on Level 74, but many more colonies may exist inside the shed of this level.
Kauer Research Base and Outpost
- A research base with an outpost stationed in Level 74, meant to research items and anomalies originating from the shed.
- This base is stationed outside of the shed, with routine observations and explorations to gain information.
- This base also has an outpost in Level 273.
Entrances and Exits
Entrances
- Entering the backyards of certain houses on Level 9 has a rare chance of transporting one to this level.
Exits
- There have been reports of a door with a brass number “6” rarely appearing in areas of the warehouse on this level. This door is documented to lead to Level 332.

Date of Discovery: 04/15/██
Item(s) Retrieved: One (1) large cardboard box containing:
- 1 plastic 9-tooth gear
- 1 Panasonic brand radio cassette player
- 1 TI-30 calculator
- 1 WW2-era military bugle
- 1 broken computer office mouse

Researcher Note: I wonder what these objects have in common, if anything at all. This level requires further exploration.
Field Agent Will Carver.
Field Agent Will Carver is scheduled for a second exploration of Level 74 on 4/17/██. Agent Carver submitted a request for additional supplies to aid in exploration, namely: a journal, an audio recorder, a flashlight, and a crowbar. Request was approved.
Log #2 – Second Exploration of Level 74

I am now standing outside the shed of Level 74. Despite there being no visible sun in this level, there is an unusually high level of heat and humidity. It would seem, though, that the origin of the sunlight cannot be placed- the angles of the shadows appear inconsistent. The shed itself seems to have been heavily oxidized, being coated thickly in rust. Vegetation and ivy cover the shed’s exterior, leaving the left door inoperable.
The right door gave way, requiring excessive force to open. I entered the shed leading to the massive warehouse inside; as expected, the shed’s interior did not fit within the dimensions of its exterior. As I walked further in, I noticed a sudden wave of dry and cold air, contrasting the previous humid heat. It seems as though there is a border between the interior and exterior of the shed, with two opposing climates. Strangely, the only apparent sound in the warehouse is the buzzing of the overhead light fixtures. Contrary to what one would expect, all noise seems to drop off quickly, rather than echoing. My footsteps on the concrete floor sound dampened and do not reverberate. With this sound-dampening effect in mind, the buzzing of the ceiling lights being ever-present is strange.
The walls of the warehouse are not visible, at least not from the entrance. It would be jumping to conclusions to assume the interior of the shed is infinite in size, but the lack of any visible walls makes this assumption plausible. It must be at least a few thousand square meters across.
I have been ordered to take an item from the shelves of the warehouse and deliver it back to the research station. From where I am standing, large shelves stacked with boxes are visible nearby. Upon further inspection, the larger boxes seem to be wooden and stacked on pallets, whilst the smaller boxes are cardboard.
Using the crowbar, I pried open the largest wooden box. Inside, there was what looked to be a sofa, although it appeared to be constructed entirely of concrete. This is certainly strange; I am going to look deeper, and will document here anything else I may find.
I made a mistake. After searching the next box and finding nothing of note, I stuck my head back out and could no longer find the exit. The architecture of the Backrooms was known to be inconsistent; I was warned of that. How did I let this happen? Instead of the door exiting the shed, where I knew it was just a moment ago, it was simply more shelves of crates. Why did I let it out of my sight?
I still cannot find the exit. I am trying to remain calm, but I have lost my sense of direction and panic is setting in. It has been almost 30 minutes, and I have encountered nothing but shelves, the same linoleum, and power outlets embedded in the floor in groups, each cluster further from the next. The sound-dampening effect of the warehouse is messing with my mind; it has become difficult to judge direction.
According to my watch, it has been about 40 minutes since I entered the warehouse. If nothing else, I will continue searching boxes for items to take back to the lab, in the event that I find the exit. Assuming the items are random, I can only hope some boxes will contain something of sustenance. So far, the boxes have contained nothing worth noting, apart from one cardboard box which appeared to be filled with worn 1st generation Microsoft Zunes. The more I look, the more off everything feels.
I am beginning to feel very paranoid. The lights directly above me flickered for a moment; none of the other lights have flickered in my time here, so this stuck out to me. Everything in the warehouse feels wrong. It feels as though I have been walking around for over three hours, but my watch displays that only one hour has passed. Either my watch is suddenly wrong, or there is a previously unknown time-dilating effect in this level. At least they’ll send a rescue team for me if I am missing for long enough; I know they will.
In my wandering, I searched for and documented more findings from the boxes on the shelves. After searching three boxes of different sizes, I found the following items:
One large cardboard box, containing:
- Two 5½ inch floppy disk drives, both snapped and broken.
- One small metal box that seemed to contain parts for a computer, but that lacked an optical drive where one would typically be located.
- One blue notebook, identical to my own, complete with an identical rip on the front cover.
- One mason jar containing what appears to be liquid diamond. This is theoretically impossible, as diamond cannot exist in a liquid state, but this level has already proven to warp reality inconsistently. I did not attempt to open the jar.
One small cardboard box, containing:
- Another cardboard box, smaller in size, containing:
- One smaller cardboard box, smaller than the previous box, containing:
- Yet another smaller cardboard box, containing:
- Another smaller cardboard box, too small to open or examine its contents. It can be assumed that it contains another small box, ad infinitum.
After various attempts with the audio recorder, I have found no success; it does not seem to register that any audio was recorded at all. I simply have to hope it will play back when I resurface from this level.
