Description

Level 774, commonly referred to as "Grape Expectations", is the 775th level of the Backrooms and is a small vineyard and winery with a house and tasting room stationed near the center, inhabited by humanoid entities known simply as "The Farmers". The vineyard is 3.5 acres in size and the property is 8 acres. The property is surrounded by a tall deer fence made of 16-gauge wire in order to ward off herbivores from touching the grapes. Exploring outside the property isn't suggested, as other (seemingly hostile) entities have been observed outside the premises, albeit only at night. The driveway gate is locked at dusk to prevent such intrusions. The Farmers are kind enough to provide a room for the Wanderer trapped within the level, so as long as they remain within The Vineyard, any Wanderer will be protected. There are four seasons, very similar to The Frontrooms, which helps with the life cycle of the grapevines. An important note is that the Farmers only have space to accomodate one Wanderer, who has already agreed to help them with their farm. However, they have said that in the case of an emergency, people can seek refuge within the winery building.

The terrain outside of the property consists of trees, neighboring houses and more farmland, with fields in the northwest that lead back to the prior level a Wanderer came from. This is a proven escape or travel method, easily allowing for supplies to be traded. Even if the level that a Wanderer came from has a higher classification (hostile territory), it will lead them back there anyway. A road is found just outside the property, which the Farmers claim leads to a nearby town where they gather farming supplies for their business.

The Farmers, when asking the Wanderer for help, said that if they weren't comfortable with farm work, could leave the level by following one of the vineyard rows (numbered 1 through 50) to be transported to the level corresponding to the row's number. For example, walking next to Row 15 will eventually teleport them to Level 15. Accepting the Farmers' work offer will stop this from occurring in the future, so as to prevent a helper from being teleported away while working in the vineyard rows.

The vineyard itself is young and diverse, containing 7 varietals of grapes (Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Sangiovese, Riesling, Barbera, Treminet, Baco Noir) that grow both in the front and back yard. The first Wanderer to come here was not the best at dealing with agriculture, but accepted the offer for fear of being taken to a more dangerous level if they refused. However, over the span of a week, they reported increased work ethic, relaxation and skill. It's possible that this just came as experience, but could also be due to the level having unique properties that are still unknown. A log from the Wanderer was provided to M.E.G., but is yet to be added to this page.

Entities

As mentioned in the description, there are 5 entities present on this level, who call themselves "The Farmers". They appear to be an average American family who claim to have started a winery and vineyard business a few years prior. They're friendly to Wanderers, expecting that they help with the business in return for lodging in the farmhouse. More detailed information will be provided soon on an Entity Page concerning them.

There are common entities outside the premises; Hounds have been heard and Smilers have been seen lurking outside. However, they appear to be warded off by the large light posted at the top of the barn. Also, the Farmers own a shotgun and Olympus, the family dog, is trained to fight any potential threats. Since the entities only show up at nighttime, they don't pose any threat to the vineyard and thus aren't counted as part of the level.

A: ... Hello? Is anyone there?

B: Message received, this is Camp Amber. Please state your name and purpose.

A: Name's Antonio Angelico, uhh, I'm a new guy around here and I think I found a new level. I was walking through... the fields of Level 10 and saw a building in the distance, looks like there are people living there.

<PAUSE>

B: Interesting. Don't approach the property until you've received further instruction-

<Dog barking in the distance>

A: Yeah, too late. They've spotted me. They aren't armed, though. I'm going to go check out what's going on; I'll try and contact you again.

B: Alright. Conversation over.

A: Camp Amber?

B: Camp Amber responding. Am I speaking to Antonio?

A: Correct. I'm currently on the newly discovered level that I talked about last time. According to the people here, it's Level 774.

B: Hold on, did you say people? How is it newly discovered?

A: Right. They're actually friendly entities, it seems. They call themselves Farmers and they have a nice little vineyard here. They asked for some help, so I'm gonna try to help them out with some stuff. They're letting me stay in their house as a guest, which is cool.

B: This is valuable information. I'll be sure to send this to M.E.G. to see what they think. Are you associated with the Major Exploring Group?

A: Yes, I ran into them on Level 1 and got a membership. If you want, I'll stay here and gather more information.

B: Alright. To preserve the radio channels, have them sent to us on paper, if possible.

A: Got it. I'll write down the stuff I find.

B: Affirmative. Conversation over.

Purpose of Log: Describing and evaluating Level 774

Ok, so I don't know exactly where to start. I guess I should begin with the basics. Yes, the property is secure. All sides of the place are fenced in, I think it's, like, 16-gauge? It's pretty thick for fencing wire, probably for deer. Length of the place is about 450 feet, width varies from 300 in the front to 500 in the back. I think that's about 6 acres.

The first notable thing about the place is the vineyard. There's a ton of vines here! There's a barn too, from the looks of it.

Ok, so after counting the vineyard rows, there are 50 rows of grapevines, each row also varying in length. I think the longest one is 300 feet and the shortest is 200. Sorry if I'm over-descriptive, but that's just a habit of mine. Each end of a row has a large wooden post, with 30-gauge wire running down the row for vines to grow on.

The barn is renovated, not an animal dwelling. The Farmers proudly call it their Tasting Room, so I guess it's where winery customers would come to buy and drink stuff. I can't do that yet, too young for the stuff.

The Farmers are aware of their location in the Backrooms, so I guess they know quite a bit about the level. I'll add more to this log series as I get more information.

Purpose of Log: Describing life on Level 774

I promise I'm not an entity. But, I actually enjoy working with the Farmers. Something very nostalgic about this place, really. My second file will be talking about what I've been doing. First off, please refrain from trying to join me and the Farmers, as we currently don't have any space to accommodate you. If it's an emergency, you can stay in the tasting room for a couple days, I think.

There are five Farmers, um, well actually, there are four of them. A family, that is. Octavio, Rose, Anthony and Julio. The fifth Farmer I refer to is their family dog, Olympus. They're really friendly, but they seem to have a trust system. I didn't notice at first, but over these past few weeks as I worked with them, uhh, they started showing signs of increased trust. Weird to say, I know, but it's apparent. Olympus started to follow me and even allowed me to pet him once, Rose started referring to me with my first name rather than 'sir', and such.

As for classification, I would say this might be Class 1 or even 0, since I've had no trouble since I got here. I have seen some Smilers at night, but they're always outside the fence and don't stay around for long. Anthony says that's because the strong floodlight outside the tasting room drives them away. Cool stuff. Have heard some howls too, but nothing came of that. Only occurs at night.

I've been getting more and more used to working with them. They've shown me how to install bird nets on the vineyard rows, how to decant the wine that they've produced, spraying the vines with pesticides and other things too. I thought it would be hard, but it's not. On the contrary, I've gotten pretty good at it, if I say so myself.

While you shouldn't stick around for too long, I would recommend spending a couple hours here. It's so calming to live in, and I bet just a bit of time can benefit your mental health. Travelling through Level 10 is probably the best for you to do, but feel free to find other entrances if you think you can.

As for the Farmers, they've agreed for me to document them, so I can provide M.E.G. with enough information to write an article on them.

Colonies and Outposts

No colonies or outposts are found on this level. Since the Farmers are entities, they don't count.

Entrances and Exits

Entrances

  • The Wanderer who discovered the level reports having wandered southeast of Level 10 and eventually discovering the driveway leading to Level 774.
  • No other Entrances are known, but it is speculated that going southeast of any level containing a large field of some sort will lead to the discovery of this level.

Exits

  • Each vineyard row shall transport anyone to the level that corresponds to that row. This will no longer work if a wanderer agrees to help the Farmers with the vineyard.
  • Travelling back into the fields northwest of the property will take them back to the level they came from.
  • Another wanderer who tested if the level truly existed later contacted a M.E.G. base from Level 130. They reportedly found the exit by noclipping into a water barrel found at the entrance to the winery.

Trivia

  • The level name, Grape Expectations, is not only a pun (on the word 'great') but also a real life event hosted by Rutgers University (New Jersey) every spring. This annual meeting talks about new technologies in the wine industry, updates concerning pests and invasive species and more.
  • The idea of exiting the level through the various vineyard rows was actually inspired by computer YES/NO gates, which is how most modern computers process information.
