Level 849, Also known as "The 849th Feline Festival", is the 850th level of The Backrooms. It is well know for it's peaceful residents, it's anomalous effects and it's normality in the dehumanizing halls of the backrooms.

Description

The 849th Festival is a seemingly endlessly expanding festival setting. There are many twisting roads which may lead one to the various attractions the festival has. The Festival is divided into a few sub areas, which mostly consist of chunks of hangouts or trading posts. This level has a sanity-restoring property to it, which has been traced to the peacefulness of the level. It also seems to have an effect similar to Level 11, although entities do not spawn naturally that often in the main parts of the level. This level is a known habitat for Glowfolk to live in, due to its bright lights that are shined into the darkness of night. This level has an average temperature of 60 degrees, with light rain and windy days being common occurrences. This level is also home to the only non-human entities native to the frontrooms, with forest life, like deer and bears being a normal sight. These are also non hostile. There is a fully functioning day and night cycle, and there is a seasonal and weather system. This level has an anomalous effect of transforming properties of living creatures into more cat-like hybrids of those creatures. See "Native Entity" for more information. Because of the amount of cat-like creatures in this level, any cat-loving wanderer coming into this level experiences a rush of serotonin and energy.

The Sanctuary

The Sanctuary is the east area of the festival. The Sanctuary is a suburb made out of log cabins, which are fully furnished and are constantly being expanded. This is also where the majority of the firework shows happen during the nights. There are a few rivers that run around through the sanctuary. A few broken down appliances can be found near the streets, but it is recommended not to disturb them, as they are home to animals (See groups below). There's a few stores at the center of town. Most of the houses here are modern, but there are some sections where the walls and roofing are older styled (Such as wooded cabins) or newer (Such as mechanical roofings and laboratory walls), with some even being a mix.

Concessions Stands

The Concessions Stands are a group of merchant posts set up in the north area of the festival. Wanderers from all over the backrooms have stands set up here to sell the various wares they have come across during their travels. Items are bought using tickets, which can be won at the Arcade Lounge. Some entities can also be found selling their items, like Sticcs selling Magic Pencils or Deathmoths making wanderers fresh jelly.

A picture of the stands at day, with wanderers all over the area.

Arcade Lounge

The Arcade Lounge is a large building set up on the south side of the festival. The interior of the building looks like a stereotypical arcade from the 90's, with a bunch of games to play. There is a pool on top of the building and a group of 5 gaming setups. The Arcade Lounge has perfect Wi-Fi, which connects to the Frontrooms flawlessly. There are a few sports courts and a locker room at the back of the arcade. We can also be found around here, too! We may even invite you to join our game..

The Arcade Lounge

The Carnival

The Carnival is the west side of the festival. This is where the majority of the main attractions of the festival are. There are also food stands set up near most attractions. There is a sports stadium in the central area of the carnival, and other attractions like concerts, barbeques and go-karting. There is also some massive segments of this that are dedicated to old-fashioned recreational activities, like fencing and jousting. At the same time, Laser Tag arenas and VR tournaments can be found right out back of the jousting range.

Peanut Land

Peanut Land is not an attraction or a residence, but a factory currently held on the level by Peanut Inc. ™. The doors to the factory all have peanut logos on them, and since the area is strictly guarded, no one has been inside besides authorized personnel. Besides the factory, there is a small market, where both Almond Water Inc. ™ and Peanut Inc. ™ sell their products. It is important to know, Peanut Inc. ™ has shown no interest in taking over any more of the level's main area, but have negotiated with M.E.G. to make more factories in the outskirts of this level.

The Forest

The Forest is the entirety of the level not claimed by Peanut Inc. ™ or created with buildings. The Forest is mostly just a normal temperate forest. However, there is a randomly spawning structure, dubbed "The Treehood" which is made of a neighborhood of treehouses. These houses are connected with bridges, and one of the trees in the center will have a rope to climb up on. These houses are mostly abandoned by humans, but some friendly entities live in them, and Wisps can be found frequently. The most frequent entity you will find in houses is Death Moths, and these houses are safe to enter. Death Moths here will allow you to take their jelly as long as you can give them something in return. Smilers, Frowners, Facelings and Sticcs have also been reported to live in these houses. Despite being located in the woods with no connection to the main section of the level, the houses here have power and running water. Multiple instances of The Treehood have been located, and resources tend to respawn if they are naturally located within this area. Clover Tea, Almond Water, Almond Cake, Peanut Muffins, Almond Party™ and Moth Jelly tend to be found here. There are also some plantations located in/past the forest. (See groups for more info)

Native Entity

This level is home to what has been dubbed "Catfolk" which share many biological traits to both humans and cats. Catfolk have been observed to be very peaceful creatures, and all catfolk have personalities. Strangely, some Catfolk seem to share more traits with one species over another, but all catfolk have a human brain. For example, a group of Catfolk may consist of:

  • A catfolk which has the fur of a cat.
  • A catfolk with a human body and tail.
  • A catfolk with a human body and cat ears.
  • A catfolk with fangs like a cat and whiskers.
  • Any mix of the above.

Catfolk have their own religion, they have been proven to worship Charlie. Charlie has told M.E.G. that he had never created the Catfolk, but saw them evolve from humans. Charlie has also told M.E.G. the catfolk seem to be permanently stuck as catfolk, and can even leave the backrooms as catfolk despite being anomalous entities that should be stuck in the backrooms. M.E.G. has studied catfolk, and recently discovered that other types of entity have been shown to be susceptible to the "infection". The infection has been traced to lengthy times in this level, and staying here for too long will slowly transform you into a catfolk yourself.

Catfolk have been shown to be better in many ways to normal humans, with a few drawbacks which are still outweighed by the positives. These go as follows:

Pros:

  • Catfolk are shown to be more romantic and attractive to other catfolk, especially female catfolk. They have also been shown to have better relationships.
  • Catfolk are much more nimble on the ground and on walls. They move faster and jump higher.
  • Catfolk have been proven to have better relations with neutral and friendly entities.
  • Catfolk share their night vision with their cat ancestors.
  • Catfolk with tails can use their tails as a whip, hurting entities and pushing them back. Catfolk with fangs are able to bite for high power, Catfolk with fur have naturally thicker skin and Catfolk with cat ears can sense movement from further away

Cons:

  • Catfolk are nocturnal, which may make exploring certain levels much more difficult, especially if the level does not have any night time.
  • Catfolk are physically weaker than humans. Their bones are slightly less tough and their muscles are less powerful.
  • Catfolk have a natural craving for fish and chicken at most times of the day.

If a standard "Hostile" type entity were to ever be infected, they lose a large chunk of their hostility. However, some still retain a negative attitude towards life. If an entity is naturally hostile towards humans, it will (most likely, however there have been some exceptions) be "mean" towards humans, however most of this meanness is expended through harmless pranks, such as pie to the face and whoopie cushions. Cat-hybrids of these entities are able to speak english (even going so far as to mutate a mouth in order to do so) and mostly have the same capabilities of normal catfolk. Entities that are susceptible to the infection are as follows:

Colonies and Outpost

  • Has 12 members.

  • Runs the facilities of the level.
    • This includes The Arcade, Concession Stands, The Festival, and other basic stores like The Cafe, The Supermarket, The Pub, The Car Park and The Dealership.

Charlie and Charlie's Pals

  • Charlie is from Level 412.
  • Charlie has a group of 14+ other cat/dog/bird/mice entity friends. The FST has not conducted a full roll call of the animals, so there is not a definite answer to how many this group consists of. The 2 confirmed cats are Buttercup, a fully tabby cat, and Bruno, A scottish fold. The dog's name is Temmie, and she is a Welch Corgi.
  • Charlie and his friends are the mascot of the FST. They represent normality to the group and to the citizens, they are residents of the level.

A medium res picture of Buttercup, taken inside one of the cabins.

  • Owns a plantation somewhere in the forest part of the level.
  • Stocks most of the level with food and water.
    • This consists of many frontrooms fruits and vegetables, as well as some wheat and rice. They have also been seen fishing, although this is less common as the forest has less rivers.
  • Live mostly in the forest.

Glowfolk Organization 849

  • A group of approximately 34 Glowfolk
  • Found wandering any area of the Level.
  • Friendly and willing to hand out supplies to passing entities and wanderers, as long as you are respectful and non-hostile towards them.

  • We own and made the arcade, just ask the catfolk. You won't be able to cheat, either.
  • If you play for long enough, we might be willing to sell you some items at the prize booth! Don't try to bribe, we consider it cheating.
  • We might be willing to challenge you in some of the games at the arcade! If you win, you get a big prize. If you lose, we won't send you anywhere. We aren't THAT cheap, are we now?

The Adventure Party

  • A group of around 40 assorted, catified entities that sit around the pub.
  • This group can often be found drunk, supposedly to suppress their memories of killing people from before they were catified.
  • This group will offer to play D&D with wanderers or even follow them around, protecting them.
  • Tend to watch comedy on the pub's televisions. If comedy isn't on, they'll watch sports channels.

Logs

All the logs in this segment are provided by the team that found this level in their pursuit to get here.

For all logs, remember:

  • R = Rowan, the leader of the group and former M.E.G. Recruit fired for unknown reasons
  • L = Lucas, the secondary leader of the team and Almond Water Inc. secretary.
  • K = Kevin, Rowan's friend and recruit of the team.
  • P = Preston, Rowan's friend and recruit of the team.

Log 1

R: Alright, We're at The End.

L: Why are we here again? Is it those damn computer programs again?

R: A different one this time. If I end up in Level Fun I'll walkie talkie you. If not, I'l-

Silence is heard on the end of the microphones for a second.

L: Windows needs a f*cking update? For real?

(K enters the level at this point)

K: Why are you two here?

L: R wanted to try a program here, but the damn computer needs an update!

K: It's going too slowly! We'll be forced out of here in a little bit!

R: Are you kidding me?

K: Well, we mind as well just sit down here for a while.

The microphone is set somewhere far away from the group, and muffled speech can be heard. Suddenly, the microphone begins to pick up speech again.

R: We're getting out of here! Grab all of your stuff.

The mic suddenly starts picking up ambient noise from Level ∞

RKL: UGH...

K: For real? This is awful! We need to wait on a whole flight to get back!

L: R, can you turn that off when we get on the flight and back on when we get back?

R: Sure. I'll get us on a flight.

A large period of time is assumed to go by on the flight, and the microphone cuts back to the sound of the computer terminal

R: Alright... Safeparty.exe it is...

The sound of a mouse click and then music is heard.

R: Is this it?

K: Yes. Entrance 1.

L: Now how do we leave?

R: I don't care. Look! There's already people here!

Catfolk: Welcome to your home!

Log 2

Ambient splashing can be heard, this log is recorded in Level 37.

K: R, why are we here again? I'm tired after this swimming

R: Ugh... I'm exhausted. Wait...

P: Yeah, I was wondering what that light was near the staircase.

L: We're going.

The camera picks up the ambience to Level -33

R: The light went out before we stepped in! We didn't make it in time!

L: We have to walkie talkie them!

K over Walkie Talkie: We're back at the festival! Where are you?

L into the Walkie Talkie: We're in the mansion! The light went out too soon!

P over Walkie Talkie: We're waiting here for you. We'll explore more of the level while we wait.

R into Walkie Talkie: We'll be well on our way soon enough.
