This page needs a fix.
Date: 12/31/2025
Reason: The log part (lightblock) is still unreadable with the font (even zooming in). I would just delete this font or replace it with a more suitable one.

It may need design fixes (Wikitext, CSS), have a few SPaG errors, or other more minor problems.
Remember to check the page history and what links here before fixing.

Description[]

A photo of a submerged part of Level 990, taken by a group of M.E.G. explorers.

Liquidpaincavernlevel990

Level 990 appears to be a string of caves and mineshafts, overwhelmed by cobwebs, moss, and algae, giving the impression of an ancient, overlooked cavern of unclear origin. Parts of the caverns on Level 990 are flooded with Liquid Pain, which is safe to touch, and is stable enough to investigate further. Submerged caves have an average depth of ten to twenty meters, with the deepest estimated depths being well over 100 meters. The caves of the level go haphazardly from hallways to large open areas, to abnormally-shaped and cramped caverns. Mineshafts also exist within the caverns; with supports made out of seemingly normal wood, but which are waiting/ready to fall at any time to crush or trap unwary Wanderers.

The tunnels are adorned with railings, and occasionally a minecart full of coal and/or other various minerals or ores. The non-euclidean geometry of Level 990 makes further research, localization, and navigation extremely challenging. After only a few miles on this level, the linear geometry changes dramatically, sending you to a new and unexpected part of the cave system. The caverns are dark and difficult to navigate because of the absence of light.

Several areas of the cave are completely dark, preventing any light sources from boosting visibility. This is the cave's least explored and most enigmatic section.

While traversing throughout the series of an unfamiliar, liminal, cavern, a sense of dread, anxiety, dissatisfaction, fear, and unfavorable overcomes one. A liminal place, they say? A phobia of the unknown, a fear that should not exist in existence, but somehow prevails. No one knows why liminal place spreads feelings of fear, dread, anxiety, or just every negative thought. Oh you ask, Gary?, Oh I understand, what is the benefit of the liminality? Do you say? What a simple question!
With liminality, we can confront our inner fear about who we are, our stability and deformities, or our achievements and disappointments. The good and bad! A fair world! Liminality symbolizes transition, transmission, and a balanced world.

Location-sensing devices are only partially functional or behave strangely on this level. Attempting to use a GPS or other radio-navigation device on this level will display the user's location as Postojna, Slovenia. Compasses indicate magnetic north, however, this direction shifts wildly due to the non-Euclidean geometry of the level. The walls of the cavern are opaque to radar sensors, displaying nothing. However, radar may still be used to detect nearby entities. Other navigation devices have proven ineffective or non-functional. Communication devices on this level have proven to be functional, but with a great deal of interference present, limiting their usefulness.

Level 990 is frigid in temperature, occasionally with an overcast or foggy atmosphere. Every cave of Level 990 has an ambiance or background noise of water trickling gradually into the stalactites, frigid air whooshing in, or echoing sounds, presumably originating from the entities of the level. The origins of these background disturbances have not been identified as of yet.

There are occasionally frameless, dusty windows present on the level, displaying a lively hill with an endless array of flowers and grass of unknown species, frozen in time at midday/noon. These windows are easily broken and appear to be made of standard glass, however, their view never alters when broken, always displaying the infinite fields of flowers, regardless of how small the glass is crushed. These are speculated to be a benign version of Entity 2 and are prized as souvenirs as they continue to function in this matter when brought outside Level 990.

Entities[]

The level has an ample population of the common varieties of entities, the most common being the contentious Facelings, found here wearing worn and tattered cavern adventurer's uniforms, as well as female Deathmoths which will occasionally flutter out of the darkness and feed on the bats which are within the levels cave systems.

This level also harbors a limited population of Smilers in the lower regions of this level have been discovered in some cramped caverns. The frameless windows are theorized to be Entity 2, dubbed simply Windows.

Ravager Apes[]

Occasionally, you may discover Ravager Apes within level 990, as it has been discovered to be a favored hunting spot of theirs. Although they have a special ability to noclip into the walls of the level, take note that Ravager Apes only use this ability when necessary, as Ravager Apes appear to have a limitation when in the presence of the level as when in use there is a possibility that it will fail and result in injuries to them. Ravager Apes are still extremely active hunters and apex predators of enormous size, and they are very dangerous entities to encounter, even outside of their natural environment. Due to the way they break into the level by charging through the walls, they have been known to cause tremendous damage to the cave systems, causing entire tunnels to collapse. Fortunately, their enormous size limits them to only caves that are large enough for them to fit through, allowing small individuals to escape from them. Still, these are intelligent predators and are not to be underestimated, as they have been known to lead wanderers to dead ends where they meet horrific fates at the hands of the Ravager Apes.

For additional information about the Ravager Apes, please review their theorized biological origin and central residence or their entity database, Ravager Apes.

Colonies, Outposts, and Communities[]

Establishing colonies, outposts, and communities is possible, but there are still no developed colonies present on this level.

The level perhaps owes its lack of communities to a catastrophic adventure involving a group of five wayfarers who undertook the task of establishing a permanent base. Shortly after entering the level, two of the group plunged accidentally into the underwater caves filled with Liquid Pain, two others perished in an unexplained manner, and one managed to escape. However, the survivor eventually succumbed to the Hydrolitis Plague.

Nevertheless, there is one colony that has been discovered on the level, which is composed entirely of Ravager Apes.

  • The Supplies Storage Warehouse is a colony of Ravager Apes which acts as a large supply and storage base for the Apes. This group has an unknown number of members and is extremely hostile and dangerous. If you accidentally encounter this colony, it is advised to move away as quickly and as quietly as possible to avoid detection. The discovery of this location is attributed to an unknown Wanderer whose remains were discovered by later explorers after they had apparently alerted and subsequently been killed by the Ravager Apes.

Events and Incidents[]

One incident is known to have occurred at this level.

  • Cavern Destruction Incident - The Cavern Destruction Incident on Level 990 occurred on May 20th, 1990, after a curious Wanderer destroyed a mineshaft support column. Several portions of the mineshaft section collapsed after the Wanderer intentionally destroyed several sections of the mineshaft's support columns, apparently wanting to see what the result would be. However, this action caused far more widespread destruction than anticipated. Destruction of the support column resulted in an earthquake that destroyed several other sections of the mineshaft and resulted in numerous additional cave-ins and blockages. Multiple groups exploring the level witnessed this event simultaneously, and numerous Wanderers were trapped or killed. This event dramatically reduced interest and funding for investigating the level. Nevertheless, some groups still finance exploration of the level.

Seventy-two people were killed, including the initiator of the event. Many loved ones of those who were killed visited the level soon thereafter, holding a sorrowful vigil, and placing numerous bouquets and candles around the level despite the hazards and risks.

After ten calendar years, the level itself had largely recovered through a mysterious and unknown mechanism. It is considered significant that the level can repair or renovate itself back to its original state. However, some sections of the mineshaft remain blocked, either owing to the extremely slow rate of repair of the cavern, or some unknown force preventing the full repair of the cavern.

Entrances and Exits[]

Entrances[]

  • Finding a sticky red substance, you may find a way to the dark cavern in Level 15. Entering it will lead you here.
  • Shedding blood in the pools of The Guts twice in Level 989 will cause you to noclip here.

After entering, the cavern you entered will disappear and all items you are carrying will vanish.

  • Entering a cave in Level 38.1 might lead here.
  • You may find holes in Level 100 which will lead you here.

Exits[]

  • Climbing a ladder in the level will lead you back to the level you came from.

These ladders can be found in most of the mine tunnels on the level.

  • An increase in saturation of the Liquid Pain signifies a close exit to Level 909.
