Level 998 is the 999th level of the Backrooms, designated to be the penultimate level to Cluster I. It has also been recently discovered.
Description[]
Level 998 appears to be a big island with a snowy city on it. Each building has a number on it, with some buildings having the same number. The numbers get bigger the farther away they are from the center of the island, with the largest number recorded being 999. At the center of the island, there is a circular stone barrier that stretches infinitely up and down. The barrier has signs all over it that have the number 0 on them, and nobody has been able to break the barrier or get past it. Because of this, nobody knows what is behind the barrier—if anything is behind it at all. The island has many unique minerals in the ground that have not been seen anywhere else, and their usefulness is undetermined. The island is floating in an endless black void, but the fog at this level makes it impossible to see without going out 100 kilometers in any direction, as that is when the fog ends.
The buildings are very similar in style but vary in color depending on their number.
- 1-99: Brown
- 100-199: Orange
- 200-299: Yellow
- 300-399: Green
- 400-499: Purple
- 500-599: Blue
- 600-699: Red
- 700-799: White
- 800-899: Gray
- 900-999: Black
The buildings can have apartments and offices in them. There is no electricity or wifi in the level, but there are rumors of a generator underground that can provide electricity to the level.
We apologize for the lack of information on this level. It has just been discovered. We will update this article in case any new information comes out.
Entities[]
As of now, only Smilers and Skin-Stealers have appeared in Level 998. However, there were some unconfirmed sightings of docile Facelings.
Colonies and Outposts[]
M.E.G. Base Orion[]
- Population of 76 people
- Open to trading and dedicates most time to discovering more of this mysterious level
- Lives in a building numbered 17 near the center.
Entrances and Exits[]
Entrances[]
As of now, the only way to enter Level 998 is by going outside in Level 997.
Exits[]
The only known exit is to enter a building for a random chance to be sent out of the level. Level exploration is ongoing to discover more about the level.

Level 998 is the 999th level of the Backrooms, designated to be the penultimate level to Cluster I.
Description[]
Level 998 is a lesser known safe haven for wanderers in the Backrooms. It appears to be a big island with a snowy city on it. Each building has a number on it, with some buildings having the same number. The numbers get bigger the farther away it is from the center of the island, the largest number recorded being 999. At the center of the island, there is a circular stone barrier that stretches infinitely up and down. The barrier has signs all over it that have the number 0 on it. Recently, it has been discovered that this barrier can be broken with a very large explosion. Thanks to this discovery, researchers have discovered a ladder behind the barrier leading to an underground bunker. This bunker had a generator with a crystal-shaped slot in it. A special, orange jewel found from mining in the level was put into this slot, fitting perfectly. This powered the generator, bringing electricity to the level, and making the level safe. It is unknown how, but the generator also got rid of every entity in the level, and doesn't seem to allow other entities to enter. The island has many unique minerals in the ground that have not been seen anywhere else, and their usefulness is undetermined. The island is floating in an endless black void, but the fog in this level makes it impossible to see without going out 100 kilometers in any direction, as that is when the fog ends.

The buildings can have apartments and offices in them. They have many lights, computers, and other things you would usually find in reality. The level has a strong wifi connection, and no password is needed to access it.
The Bunker[]
The Bunker is entered from climbing down the ladder in the center of the city. It is a labyrinth of stone hallways, with the previously mentioned generator in the middle. The Bunker seems to have nuclear protection, though it doesn't seem very strong. Sometimes doors leading into rooms can be found, and these rooms can contain snacks, food, electronics, and furniture.
Entities[]
As stated before, no entities are in this level.

Level 998 is the 999th level of the Backrooms, designated to be the penultimate level to Cluster I.
Description[]
Level 998 appears to be a big island with a snowy, desolate city on it. Each building has a number on it, with some buildings having the same number. The numbers get bigger the farther away it is from the center of the island, the largest number recorded being 4999. At the center of the island, there is a massive crater caused by a nuclear explosion. The island has many unique minerals in the ground that have not been seen anywhere else, and their usefulness is undetermined. However, traces of Neodymium-144 (a radioactive isotope) has been found in the centre of the crater. They also exhibit glows of different colours, ranging from sky blue to magenta. The island is floating in an endless black void, but the fog in this level makes it impossible to see without going out 100 kilometers in any direction, as that is when the fog ends.
As of now, there are 6 known sections of Level 998, those being "The City", "The Outpost", "The Crater", "The Hazardous Zone", "The Impossible Zone", and "The Aeternus Zone". However, reports of a 7th area have surfaced. These claims are currently being investigated.
Sector I: The City[]
The City is the 1st area of Level 998, and is typically the one most wanderers will spawn in. As said above, The City is a large, desolate, snowy city, with numbers on the buildings, and dark building interiors. The snow of The City can be melted, which converts it to Almond Water. However, all forms of Almond Water in this level are radioactive. As such, they are made of toxic waste, and drinking them will result in one's skin melting, until only their skeleton is visible. Despite the lack of organs and blood, wanderers will still be alive after Almond Water is drunk.
As mentioned above, each of Level 998's buildings are dark. As such, flashlights and night vision goggles should be brought before going on expeditions. The buildings will also contain various supplies, such as food. The numbers on the buildings will go from 1 to 999. While it is possible to find Liquid Pain in the buildings, it seemingly has an anomalous property where it heals all forms of pain caused to wanderers. In addition, Liquid Pain will also restore one back to normal if they have ever drank Almond Water, and fell victim to its effects. It is also possible to encounter hospital buildings, which will contain medical supplies. However, it could also be possible to enter either Level 354 or Level 14 upon entering the hospital. The chances of doing so will go up by 10% each time one enters a hospital building. If one were to stay outside for too long, they will eventually be "eaten" by a foggy mist, and will eventually be killed by radiation.
Sector II: The Crater[]
The Crater is the 2nd sector of Level 998, and can be accessed from the center of The City.
The Crater is a massive crater at the center of the city. It used to be a bunker with a generator in it. Initially, the generator was unpowered, and nobody even knew it existed, but in June 2013, it was discovered, and powered by a special jewel. After a few years, it was overworked, and it shut down, causing a power outage throughout the entire level. The M.E.G. tried to power it back on, and when they did, it caused a massive explosion, turning the level what it is today. The generator somehow stopped entities from entering the level, so when it exploded, the level had frequent entities in it. The Crater today, has an extremely high amount of radiation around it, so under no circumstances should one go near it. It is approximately 100 meters deep, and around 50 meters wide. Puddles of an unknown glowing, green liquid can be found commonly around and in The Crater. These puddles are extremely radioactive, and can kill you from radiation poisoning in 13 seconds from stepping in it.
Sector III: The Outpost[]
The Outpost is the 3rd sector of Level 998, and can be accessed by wandering far through the City.
The Outpost appears to be similar to Level 11. However, it portrays some of the properties of The City, and Level 998 in general. These include the fog, the dark interiors of the buildings, and the radioactive Almond Water. All of The Outpost's stoplights are permanently stuck at red. As such, it is possible to find cars stuck in place. Upon further inspection, it is revealed that there are people driving the car. However, they are unable to get out of their car without breaking a window. As such, all cars in The Outpost should be avoided at all costs, since they will trap one inside.
While building numbers can still be found, they will now go from 1,000 to 1,999. Such buildings can still be entered, but are more dangerous and more likely to lead to Level 777 In addition, it is also possible to find buildings with negative numbers or letters, such as Level 139 and The Basement. Attempts to enter these buildings have been unsuccessful; all travelers that had attempted to enter them had ended up going missing. Further studies reveal that these disappearances have been linked to an entity known as "The Voidbeast", a demonic entity that will send all wanderers it touches to The Void.
Sector IV: The Hazardous Zone[]
The Hazardous Zone is the 4th section of Level 998, which can be entered by walking for several miles in The Outpost while in the mist. The Hazardous Zone, as it's name suggests, is when Level 998 begins to get more dangerous.
The Hazardous Zone appears to be similar to The City. However, it is much more abandoned. The entirety of the Hazardous Zone is coated in a greenish fog. Similarly, the entirety of the Hazardous Zone also appears to be green. Numbers on the buildings will now go from 2,000 to 2,999, and the buildings are extremely unsafe, full of deadly nuclear waste in all areas. In addition, some of the numbers are peeling off, torn apart, or completely gone. Each of the buildings will emit the sound of machinery. As such, it is possible to go deaf due to the machinery noises.
The main threat of the Hazardous Zone is the high amounts of radiation within the section. The mist will occasionally cover entire buildings, resulting in one being unable to enter it. Walking into the mist will result in one's brain shutting down, resulting in them become a "living corpse". The Hazardous Zone also contains various amounts of toxic waste. The toxic waste should be avoided at all costs, since simply looking at it for 10 seconds will cause one's entire body, including their flesh and skeleton, to melt.
Sector V: The Impossible Zone:[]
The Impossible Zone is the 5th section of Level 998, and was the final section of it up until September 7, 2022.
The Impossible Zone is similar to the Hazardous Zone, albeit far more dangerous. The entirety of the Impossible Zone is red, and fire engulfs the section. Each of the numbers will now go from 3,000 to 3,999, and attempts at entering these buildings will immediately result in one getting killed by a seemingly unknown entity force. The mist of the Impossible Zone can simply close in on wanderers, resulting in immediate death. The only way to reach the next zone is to walk even further through the Impossible Zone.
Sector VI: The Aeternus Zone:[]
The Aeternus Zone is the 6th section of Level 998, and may be the final section of it. It was discovered on 9/7/2022.
The Aeternus Zone is the most dangerous, as well as densest zone of Level 998. The skyscrapers are packed together with only small alleyways between them. They can also reach up to 700 stories tall, with the Tower of Kyouki in the middle of the zone (numbered 4999) standing even taller, between 1,200 and 1,500 stories tall. However, the skyscrapers are in a state of disrepair, and occasionally collapse due to the corrosion as well as the amount of toxic and corrosive waste inside. This is purely speculation, as the entire sector is covered in a clear mist that can still be seen through, however entering it will cause death within 4 seconds. The only way this zone is known about is through photos taken from the edge of Sector V. This sector has also been reported to be much larger, with the buildings being numbered from 4,000 to 4,999.
A possible Sector VII may exist, however there is no way of ever knowing considering the nature of Sector VI.
Entities[]
While entities can appear in this level, they are not very common, and are not the main danger to worry about in this level. Entities in Level 998 include Smilers, Hounds, Facelings and Skin-Stealers.
Colonies and Outposts[]
Due to the nature and overall harsh environment of Level 998, colonization is infeasible.
Entrances and Exits[]
Entrances[]
- No-clipping through a blue neon light in Level 997 will result here.
- Entering a brown door in Level 464 will lead wanderers here.
- Certain elevators in Level 5 will lead one to the interior of a building of Level 998 when entered. Usually, these elevators are "marked", due to having a button saying "998".
- Entering a building while in a sad mood in Level 11 has a chance to take you to the inside of one of Level 998's buildings that is the same color of the building you walked it.
- A wanderer needs to somehow make their way towards a part of the Level 205, where the sky is fuzzing and glitching and disappearing and reappearing frequently. Walk in a straight line, until the clouds begin to dissipate and reappear wherever the wanderer looks, that is when the Wanderer will make their toward at this Level.
Exits[]
- On rare occasions, entering a building will send one to any level of the Backrooms.
- Jumping into water with a device (such as a Walkie-Talkie) will send one to Level 7.
It is thought that you can wander to far or no-clip to be sent to Level 999
