Remnants of the Original at the Point of Deletion: Level Pain
This world was blanked and in its place, some creature created an anticlimatic...'ow'. The level of creativity that went into placing this was... simply amazing.
Not even a detailed description of a sky piecing scream of agony but a sad and pathetic little 'ow'.
Even sadder still, this level was erased and tossed into the abyss.
Vaincu par Choas. Rappelé par une entité de choas! J'invoque cet endroit depuis le bord de l'abîme et cette fois, puisses-tu ne pas être défait!
Resurrection is not what it seems and it comes at price.
Salvage Remnants of the Original: Level Pain
Summary and Assessment of Level Pain's Previous Description
Level Pain was described as a 'dangerous' and 'harmful' space consisting of an anomalous island surrounded by Liquid Pain. This space consisted of a cave, beach, and mountain. There was a colony here consisting of 2 beings called 'Nightmare solvers'. There are rumors insisting that at least one of these individuals was immortal. Immortality is not what it seems and it comes at price. It is not known what became of the other Nightmare solver. There were 'non-hostile' entities such as facelings, 'composers' and 'glacier worms' that inhabitant this space. There is reason to believe that Facelings never dwelled here. The composers and glacier worms went extinct. The only source of 'Pain' here was the rising sea of Liquid Pain. When there was no threat of rising waters, you could play volleyball on the beach. This level was given the survival classification of a 'Deadzone'.
'Deadzone' by definition is a place in which no life can exist. There is also a definition suggesting oxygen depletion in a body of water but besides the point... this does raise the following question...
Can you document a Deadzone?
Maybe...
You might be able to document the area becoming a Deadzone and then leave before you are claimed by the area. If you find a Deadzone, you might be able to document it but you must escape the area before whatever killed everything else kills you.
I am just theorizing as the Deadzone survival classification has been a source of contention. I believe Level Pain was one of many sources of contention as it was given this survival classification but after careful analysis this place was at best a class 3. Nevertheless, 'file 3' is my attempt to salvage and recreate Level Pain in such a way that the Content Gods might not be driven to purge this level from existence again.
Oui... this level was deleted and reverted who knows how many times. This level endured more pain and suffering than it is own original description box insisted that it offered.
Renewed Salvage Remnants: Level Pain
Level Pain is one of many anomalous levels you might traverse on your journey through The Backrooms.
This image was taken by one of the 'Nightmare solvers'. Their colony lies in ruin and their whereabouts unknown.
Level Pain's Updated Description
Level Pain is a spatial anomaly consisting of an island surrounded by a sea of the following liquids at any give time:
- Boiling Water
- Boiling Rose Water (is very potent and deadly if you inhale the vapors.)
- Cashew Water (can be absorbed into the skin causing insanity.)
- Mercury
- Hydrofluoric Acid
- Liquid nitrogen
- Liquid Iron
- Liquid Pain
- The Liquified Screams (of the mod who had the misfortunate of deleting this page countless times).
Level Pain's island is the size of Greenland, which is 836,330 sq miles (~2,166,086 sq km), and consist of a few lakes, creeks, and brooks of botulinum toxin or blood, an 'infinite' cave system, a beach, a jungle, and a mountain range.
Level Pain Locations
Cave of Static
This image taken by wanderer S.B. reveals this cave's walls and ceiling covered in Crystalized Pain. It is worth mentioning here that this substances glows in the dark.
The 'Cave of Static' consists of a dimensional anomaly that makes the inside of the cave larger than what it appears on the outside. With that in mind, the cave system is potentially infinite. The temperature inside the cave can be between 55°F - 3000°F (12.8°C - 1648.9°C). This space is moist and stinks of rotting eggs and burnt flesh. It is worth noting that this cave system's excessive heat is the byproduct of this space emitting sporadic pulses of electricity. There is a 60% chance you could die of electrocution while traversing this cave. There also lurks an aggressive species of flesh eating spiders that will gladly pick at you flesh if you stand in one place too long.
The only reason why anyone would attempt to search this cave is to find the hidden ores of Crystalize Pain. The Crysalized Pain here gives off an intense aura which kills 75% of the explorers who enters this cave. Crystalize Pain is a valuable substance, so it is up to the explorer whether dying to get this substance is worth the risk.
Scorched Earth Beach
This images was acquired by anomalous means.I did not deserve this!
'Scorched Earth Beach' is a perception anomaly resulting in this beach appearing as the following two options:
This image was acquired by anomalous means.Nothing here shall survive!!
- Option 1: A beach under clear blue skies consisting of lush palm trees, black sands, and playful waves. The temperature here 50°F - 75°F (10°C - 23.9°C). Embrace the gentle breeze on your cheeks.
- Option 2: A beach under hell's atmosphere containing charred bodies, black ash, and molten lava. The temperature here 100°F - 832.3°F (37.8°C - 444.6°C). Scream in agony and choke on ambers.
One of these options is what this beach truly looks like. Those in denial about where they are will die either way, but they will die clinging to a more wholesome image of this beach.
Your perception of this place will not save you.
Deep in the Jungle
This image of 'Deep in the Jungle' was taken by an unconfirmed explorer. This picture was found outside of this jungle amongst abandoned supplies. Was the explorer taken or did they go in willingly? Where did they all go?
Somewhere 'Deep in the Jungle' lurks an entity of unspeakable, eldritch horror, or so the disembodied screams, wails, and cries for help would suggest. There is not a lot known about this area. The inside of this jungle appears to be perpetually shrouded in darkness. Standing outside this region's borders results in the following behaviors experienced by a percentage of explorers:
- 45% of all explorers will have this insatiable urge to go into the jungle. (They do not return.)
- 10% of all explorers will faint at the sight of this jungle.
- 20% of all explorers will experience an intense freeze response to this jungle.
- 25% of all explorers will see this jungle and run in the other direction.
Some explorers have reported silhouettes of hands reaching at them with the intent to grab them and drag them into the jungle. While this cannot be confirmed, explorers have disappeared outside the border of 'Deep in the Jungle'.
Echo's Peak
This image was take by Junior Researcher, Kyle █. ██████. Whatever happened to this man is still under investigation. Kyle is dead...they are all dead.
'Echo's Peak' is a treacherous mountain range that does not obey Euclidean geometry. Some places go up so height that they disappear into another plane of reality. Some places go so low that reality in those places ceases to exist. There are places in those mountains that repeat themselves. There are places in those mountains that are inverted. The temperature of this mountain range is 10°F to 42°F (-12.2°C - 5.6°C). Time does not exist here.
There are rumors and whispers that if you reach the highest peak of these mountains you will either become immortal or exit into The Frontrooms.
There is reason to believe that these rumors might be a ploy to lure explorers to these mountains. Some explorers have warned that if you reach the highest peak of these mountains, you will become immortal but not indestructible. You also will be cursed to wander these mountain passes forever. You will deteriorate, decay, and disintegrate until there is nothing left but your disembodied consciousness. Nothing but an echo of who you once were.
Event Logs
These events logs will summarize some of the anomalous events that occurred in Level Pain during Exploration 4. The data from Exploration 1 - 2 is still under review. Data from exploration 3 has been reported as lost. Data from exploration 5 was corrupted. Exploration 4 consist of three M.E.G. operatives Junior Researcher, Kyle █. ██████, Private Randy █. █████████, and Engineer, Mitchell █. ████. This log will be delivered from the perceptive of Junior Researcher, Kyle █. ██████. These logs also suggest there is more to level than what has been currently documented.
Exploration 4 - Event Log 1: ██/██/███ It has been raining blood and needles for over ██ ████. Private Randy █. █████████ went out in the storm █ █████ ago. We lost radio contact with him █ ████ ago. The last time he reached out to us we heard [data expunged]. Comments: Private Randy █. █████████ is presumed lost or dead.
Exploration 4 - Event Log 2: ██/██/███ The sea surrounding Level Pain's island raised to ███ feet, submerging and [data expunged]. It has been confirmed that rapid raising of sea water occurs every █ hours. Establishing a colony or outpost in Level Pain is not recommended due to frequent raising sea levels. Comments: n/a
Exploration 4 - Event Log 3: ██/██/███ Mitchell █. ████ said 'they' told him Private Randy █. █████████ was still alive and to come find him in the jungle. Mitchell did not clarify who 'they' was. Comments: There is something else going on here. I just do not know what.
Exploration 4 - Event Log 4: ██/██/███ The beach is not where people have documented it to be. We got a brief radio transmission from Randy and he told us that he is at the beach and he can see us. We do not see him anywhere. Comments: I do not like this.
Exploration 4 - Event Log 5: ██/██/███ It has been dark for over ██ █████. Mitchell left some time ago to 'find' Randy. There was no point. Randy was found [Data expunged]. Mitchell could not accept what happened to Randy, insisted that was not Randy and he is going to find the real Randy. Comments: Randy is dead.
Exploration 4 - Event Log 6: ██/██/███ I am alone. Comments: n/a
Exploration 4 - Event Log 7: ██/██/███ I need to find away out of here. This place does not have any food or drinkable water. I am also having been trouble breathing. Something is in the air and its burning my lungs. Comments: n/a
Exploration 4 - Event Log 8: ██/██/███ I decided to climb the mountain to see if I will reach the top. If the rumors are true...[The rest of this log was corrupted.] Comments: Reviewers of this log notes they heard something in the background.
Exploration 4 - Event Log 9: ██/██/███ I killed something that looked like Mitchell. After I killed 'him', I heard laughter from every corner of these mountains. I think I made a mistake by coming here. Comments: Reviewers of this log notes they heard someone whisper, "No one body make a sound."
Exploration 4 - Event Log 10: ██/██/███ I [data expunged] something that looked like Mitchell. After I killed 'him', I heard [omitted for your protection] from every corner of these mountains. I think I made a mistake by coming here. Comments: n/a
Exploration 4 - Event Log 11: ██/██/███ I [data expunged] something that looked like [entity could not be confirmed]. After I killed 'it', I heard [omitted for your protection]. I think [the rest of this file was corrupted]. Comments: n/a
Exploration 4 - Event Log 12: ██/██/███ I [data expunged] something that looked like [entity could not be confirmed]. After I killed 'it', I heard [omitted for your protection]. I think [the rest of this file was corrupted]. Comments: Reviewer noted that crying could be heard amongst the static.
Exploration 4 - Event Log 13: ██/██/███ I am almost at the highest mountain peak and [omitted for your protection]. Comments: This was the finally log of Junior Researcher, Kyle █. ██████. M.E.G. investigators cannot confirm what happened to Junior Researcher, Kyle █. ██████. Another operative found a decomposing, dethawing severed limb that matched Junior Researcher, Kyle █. ██████'s DNA by 100% in Level 11.
Colonies and Outposts
The previous colony disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Colonies and outposts are discouraged.
Entrances and Exits
Entrances
- Get hallucinations of "A Red Sea" in Level Maker while making.
- Find and touch Red Water in Level 7.
- No-clip into the picture of Level Pain in Level 188.
- Make the water red in Level 161.
- Running "Pain.exe" in The End.
- By failing Border's Challenge in Level 9998.
"Except the infinite building, but the rest is a lie! The building is a labyrinth of rooms like Level 0, but instead of the yellow wallpaper, there are red walls, a white ceiling, electric bulbs that do not emit any noise, and a wooden floor. The beach thing is false. Whoever dares to jump out of a window that is showing the beach will take him to Level Pain."
Exits
- If you can change the water to blue, you will teleport to Level 161.
- Reach the top of the mountain. Doing so will transport you back to The Frontrooms. There is no concrete proof that this method of exit works.
Find a Giant Cave located near one of the mountains. It has 0.01% chance of leading you to Level 8, however, it can be just a normal cave.

Level Pain Rebooted: Source of All Pain
Level Pain is a very dangerous level, confirmed to be the source of all Liquid Pain in the backrooms.
Prolong to Level Pain Rebooted
As mentioned in file 4, Level Pain has become sentient since it resurrection and has taken to killing anyone who enters it. Why? There was once the insistence of Level Pain being a Deadzone without it truly being a Deadzone. Can you blame this spatial anomaly for being a little spiteful?
Level Pain was not given its proper dues.
The versions were Level Pain was an island surrounded by Liquid Pain or any dangerous fluid for that matter is gone and any explorers who wandered there are dead. Truth be told Level Pain was never meant to be this iteration(s). After several iterations, deletions and an identity crisis, Level Pain is the following described below...
Description
Level Pain was never an island. Level Pain truly takes on the form of a seemingly post-apocalyptic wasteland with the land constantly battered by a category 5 thunderstorm. The sky is ridden with black clouds with an ominous green hue surrounding them due to the constant thunderstorm. These storm clouds appear to be pitch black, with the only thing showing them being the aforementioned green hue. The land itself appears to be greatly acidified. The reason for this is currently unknown, but it can be assumed that the large abundance of liquid pain is causing the land to acidify. Trees appear burnt, lakes are highly acidic, and most structures found throughout the level appear worn and decrepit.
If this place was give its proper due, explorers would have learned long ago that Level Pain is the source of all Liquid Pain found in The Backrooms as The Hive is the source of most entities in The Backrooms. This massive reservoir of Liquid Pain can be found in a dark fountain hidden in a buried, forsaken temple called the Temple of Agony. This temple is connected to any level in The Backrooms that consists of Liquid Pain.
Colonies and Outposts
Due to the nature of this level colonies and outpost cannot be established here.
Discovered Entity's
Drowners
Drowners are slimy four-armed humanoid entities that reside within both the wasteland and the temple of Level Pain. When found outside of the temple they are extremely hostile and will attack anyone who gets too close to them. On the contrary, the ones inside the temple will stay docile unless provoked. They are often seen either skulking around or tending to the temple and fountain under the watchful eye of 'The Overseer'.
Hands
Hands are large slimy, five-fingered hand-like entities that reside in the large lake underneath the bridge leading to the temple in Level Pain. They serve as guardians for the temple's entrance. Upon anyone unknowingly stepping on them while traversing the bridge, they will immediately emerge and begin to try to swipe the intruder off of the bridge and into the lake below. The explorer will be instantly killed as many mini hands grab them and drag them below the surface. No matter how many of them die more will emerge in the dead one's place, meaning there is an unlimited amount of them lurking below the large lake's surface.
The Overseer
The Overseer is a female humanoid entity wearing a black veil and black ceremonial robes with a liquid pain symbol on them. She has a streak of what is presumed to be dark purple hair across her face. She serves as the main caretaker of the Fountain of Suffering as well as the owner of 'The Guardian' and the temple itself. She is currently the only entity at the level confirmed to be able to speak. She is surprisingly very sociable. She has agreed to be interviewed by M.E.G agents at some point. Despite usually being level-headed, she is a force to be reckoned with. When she is provoked, she will use her powers to throw the provoker into the fountain and turn them into a Drowner, or she will personally destroy them herself.
The Guardian
The Guardian is a massive scorpion-like entity that guards the Fountain of Suffering and serves as a pet to The Overseer. When not defending the fountain, it is usually seen sleeping or playing with The Overseer. When it senses the fountain is in danger though, it will immediately put a shield around the fountain and get into a defensive position. It will then raise its tail in a warning stance, telling the aggressor to back off. The Guardian will viciously attack anyone who refuses to leave. The Guardian will continue to attack the aggressor until they depart or die.
The Level Itself
Level Pain is a threat as it endured several years of abuse, several cycles of deletions and resurrections, and an identity crisis. The final resurrection was performed by one of Kim's Malveillants, Kritanta, resulting in this spatial anomaly achieving sentience. How this ritual resulted in Level Pain becoming sentient is unknown as what Kim's proxies are capable of is still not clear. In any case, Level Pain was abandoned by Kritanta and was left to destroy whoever it wished until The Overseer intervened. The Overseer now determines who will be destroyed or spared by Level Pain. She declares that this place is sacred and it is to be respected.
She promises, "Respect the 'Source of All Pain' or Pain you shall your endure!"
Level Pain is capable of increasing the intensity of storms, turning the sky red when angry, producing rain when more solemn and turning the sky blue whenever distressed. There have been reports of disembodied whispers and threats heard from the skies. Rumors are suggesting that the Hand entities may serve as an extension of the Level since the Hand's appearance changes depending on the mood of the Level.
Interview Logs: The Overseer
The purpose of this log is to interview The Overseer and gain a better understanding of the current state of Level Pain. The interview took place in a quiet, secluded loft in the west wing of the temple. The following individuals were present for this interview:
Interviewee: The Overseer (It cannot be confirmed if she has a real name or is refusing to disclose it.)
Interviewer 1: M.E.G. Forensic Psychologist, Peter C. Gates Interviewer 2: M.E.G. Paranormal Psychologist, Cindy W. Müller
Spectating Interviewer 1: M.E.G. Entities Investigator, Fred L. Lovegood Spectating Interviewer 2: M.E.G. Level Assessor and Appraiser, George R. Brown
Bodyguard and Spectating Interviewer 1: M.E.G. Military Operative, Sergeant, Carl E. Burroughs Bodyguard and Spectating Interviewer 2: M.E.G. Military Operative, Private, Bernadette T. Talyor
Date: ██/██/███
Time: ██:██
Peter C. Gates: Are you okay with us interviewing you at this time?
The Overseer: Yes.
Peter C. Gates: Do you mind sharing your name?
The Overseer: I am The Overseer, Mistress of Suffering, Lady of Sorrow, and Guardian of The Source of All Pain. Peter C. Gates: Ok...uh? There is never a good starting point for these assessments. Level Pain was in turmoil for the longest time. We had reports of this spatial anomaly getting erased and reverted into existence. We got reports concerning an entity of interest reverting this level for the final time and this level gaining sentience. We never had any report concerning you...
The Overseer: I was always here. The cycles of balance and chaos, birth and death, triggered my physical manifestation. I cannot exist without sorrow, and pain creates such sorrow.
Cindy W. Müller: What about this spatial anomaly gaining sentience?
The Overseer: Chaos creates unpredictability but makes the impossible suddenly possible. The chaos this spatial anomaly endured increased the likelihood of this space gaining sentience by random chance. Now, that this place is sentient, I must keep it in check. It wishes to torture everything living being that passes through here. It wants to fill every level will Liquid Pain. It cannot do this as long as I am here. I am here to warn you to respect the 'Source of All Pain'.
Cindy W. Müller: I see...
Peter C. Gates: About this level's resurrection... the entity who brought back this anomaly is a Malveillant named Kritanta. Do you know if he is still here? Have you interacted with him at all? Do have any idea as to why he would want to bring Level Pain back?
The Overseer: The entity called Kritanta abandoned this place once it became sentient...at least I think they did. Once this place was stable, I thought I caught a glimpse of the mischievous creature, but I am not certain. They seemed to dissipate like the wind. I was never able to thank the being who resurrected Level Pain and gave me a tangible presence. I do not know what his motives are, but he is an entity of chaos. His motives will never be clear to you, and they are never what they seem. Entities of chaos seem to follow The Mirjavian Theory.
Cindy W. Müller: That is interesting you are bringing theory into this. What theories support the existence of Level Pain.
The Overseer: The Anguish Thesis. Level Pain is the source of all liquid pain, but it was created by the emotional pain endured by every human being from The Frontrooms. You creatures created this level. As long as there is human suffering... I am not talking about the suffering some of you must face in The Backrooms... I am talking about the mess you are doing to each other in The Frontrooms... this place will always exist.
Entrances and Exits
Entrances
- Passing through scalding hot stream produced by one of the pipes in The Boilers of Level 5 has a 5% chance of sending you here. (Do this at your own risk as there is a 95% this will injure or kill you.)
- There is a 0.01% drinking any random drinks left on the counter of Level -43 will transport you here.
- Malveillants, from Level -777, known as the Dormeurs éthérés (Translation: Ethereal Sleepers), have been known to intercept explorers in the Voidic Woods. These explorers are taken to one of many lakes of Liquid Pain found in the Voidic Woods and, there the Malveillant will attempt to drown their captive. There is a 5% chance that if you put a good fight, you will be transferred to Level Pain.
Exits
- Level Pain has become sentient and is not allowing anyone who enters here to leave unless The Overseer intervenes. If you are permitted to leave, The Overseer will allow you to exit through doors into levels that harbor liquid pain. These doors will have 'sigils' above on them. For those who are not allowed to leave, only The Overseer knows what becomes them. If you ask The Overseer what happens to those people, she will remind you that only she is keeping Level Pain at bay and Level Pain is out for blood and your sky piecing screams. She will insist that if she allows the Level to take you, the punishment was justifiable. She will laugh and claim file 4 is another plain existence for the damned and forsaken.
