meg·gie
/ˈmeɡē/
noun OFFENSIVE • THE BACKROOMS
a contemptuous term for people associated with the Major Explorer Group.
Meggie, sometimes colloquially spelled meggy, is an offensive slur in Standard English mostly used against members and individuals associated with the Major Explorer Group, settlers who inhabit their outposts, and oftentimes the group itself. The word derives from its common abbreviation of the organization's name, the M.E.G. Its usage is commonly found among their rivals, although since the 1990s, it has since been mostly used to criticize the actions and extrajudicial punishments the M.E.G. are entirely or partly involved in.
Its etymology can be traced back to even before the Major Explorer Group was formed in the 1890s. The term megge — a vulgar slang in Norwegian that can be translated as bitch, though without its sexual innuendo — has been used for other factions at the time, and the M.E.G. was theorized to have inherited the term. It was in common use among Norwegian communities within Level 1, and the derivative slang first known usage documented a diary written in Norwegian, describing the author's dejection and resentment toward being outcasted from a presumably semi-influential group. Nevertheless, careful literary analysis have indicated that its usage is instead used to refer the unnamed group as a "big, female animal" but with its negative connotation remaining. The term was eventually adapted into how it is spelled today during the formation years of the M.E.G.
Contemporary use of the term, however, has ignored its historical context, and is alternatively used to mock the M.E.G. specifically. Notably, its usage witnessed a significant surge in popularity and subtle modifications due to the Flicker event, a catastrophic incident that caused devastation for the group. Bases relatively unscathed by the event often used the term to deride those seeking refuge within their outposts without concern if the wanderers were associated with the group or not. In certain cases, it has gained a synonymous relation with the term hobo.
Public opinions for the usage of the term is heavily divided. Despite M.E.G.'s influence over the Backrooms, its usage still remains common, even among members of allies. Using meggie in the presence of an M.E.G. officer frequently results in complications or discord.
