The Mist Lands is one of the more obscure and less known levels of the Backrooms.

Description

A vast, foggy landscape, characterized by somewhat low visibility and layers of interconnected, decaying bridges and bridge segments. It is mostly a place of constant change and appears to be adjusting its appearance based on the unconscious mind. A Day-Night-Cycle is present which seems to be slightly inconsistent. The bridges the Mist Lands consist of, vary in shape, size and decay. Some might appear new while others can collapse, thus posing a real danger. Travelers will often come across dead ends by either finding a collapsed bridge segment or an unfinished one. The later is characterized by multiple construction signs, site fences and other construction equipment. A light wind is present at times, but the weather remains otherwise stable. Temperatures are moderate. Whether a bottom end or a ceiling exists is unknown, just like the size of this level.

Various obscurities can be found within the Mist Lands. Including but not limited to audio and visual distortions (distant noise, warping of parts of the environment, mirages), belongings of past travelers and structures of the following kinds: small and decaying houses, abandoned cars and abandoned playgrounds. Furthermore, various objects can be found, including resources like food and water (though often in bad condition, it is not advised to consume anything found within the Mist Lands). Travelers might also come across more obscure objects like old toys and cribs. Few people have also documented to have heard distant shreek-like or metalic noises. Their origin still remains a mystery. Other distant sounds have also been described, but they are considered to be auditory hallucinations. Still, you may remain careful when hearing something odd. Many exploration attempts have been made, but explorers either went missing or were unable to find answers to most questions on the nature of the Mist Lands.

Entities

Not a lot of entities have been encountered in this level and most of them remain a mystery. The most prominent entity somebody may encounter is one that shares a lot of names, but is commonly refered to as the "Fisherman's Shadow". A dark, humanoid creature with a hat. The environment around this entity is warping and it always tries to stay behind a traveler while getting slowly closer. This entity either lures a lonely traveler into the mist and drags them away, or pushes them off a bridge. People who encounter this entity usually go missing.

Another type of entity that can be encountered, are the Mist Cicadas. They prove to be more dangerous then their name suggests. Mist Cicadas can be compared to the legend of the Mothman, as they can be described as humanoid, cicada-like creatures, which roam the depths of the Mist Lands. They emit loud, clicky noises similar to regular cicadas. What makes Mist Cicadas dangerous is their behaviour, which includes them appearing out of nowhere and draging victims away into the sky. It is possible to hurt Mist Cicadas, keep that in mind when traversing the Mist Lands.

Entrances and Exits

It turns out that there is no way of entering or exiting the Mist Lands, that works 100%. And while the existance of the following entrances and exits has been proven, other means of getting to and out of this level might also exist. Adventurous travellers occasionally seek out to find new entrances and/or exits.

  • There is a small chance to end up in the Mist Lands by sitting down on a chair on Level 5 and noclipping through it.
  • It easier to get to the Mist Lands by noclipping through a bush on level 46.
  • The Mist Lands can be exited by randomly noclipping through a pillar of a bridge while leaning on it.
