Moth Jelly, also known as Queen Moth Jelly or Royal Jelly is a substance found in the Backrooms.

Description

Two jars of Moth Jelly.

Moth Jelly is a nutritional, jelly-like substance produced by Death Moths to feed their young and maintain their hives. It typically takes on a violet coloration and has a similar consistency to honey although thinner. Moth Jelly produced by female Deathmoths has trace amounts of strong pheromones that attract male Deathmoths and cause them to enter an entranced state when consumed. This makes the male Deathmoth addicted to it and making them completely subservient to a particular hive's Queen and willing to do whatever the Queen wishes in exchange for more.

The main source of Moth Jelly is of course, female Deathmoths. The highly aggressive nature of female Death Moths makes trying to obtain Moth Jelly a dangerous and life-threatening endeavor, but the nutritious properties of the jelly makes it a reward that possibly outweighs the risk.

Moth Jelly can be found in any level with a high population of Deathmoths. Although rare, Moth Jelly packaged in bottles and jars also appear all throughout the Backrooms even where Deathmoths are not present. These are often labeled with a sticker reading "Property of Royal Jelly Farms™" accompanied by a logo of a purple crown.

Properties

Moth Jelly is highly nutritious as it's high in protein, nutrients and natural sugars and it keeps those who consume it fuller longer as well as give them a considerable boost in strength, energy and stamina for the entire day. These qualities make Moth Jelly a very valuable food source for wanderers. It has also been shown to greatly improve one’s mood and rejuvenate one’s drive to survive. Although, as of a new update from an explorer group, if you consume larger doses than recommended within a short time period, it may lead to some adverse health effects and anomalous properties.

Moth Jelly is described as being exceptionally sweet and tasting like blueberries and honey with an aftertaste of lavender. It also has an interesting side effect in that it causes male Deathmoths to be attracted to and steadfastly protective of the consumer and causes females to ignore them entirely for about 5-6 minutes, where the effects will then wear off. Users can use this to their advantage to retrieve more Moth Jelly from female Deathmoths without being harmed. This is due to the female Death Moth pheromones that is present in Moth Jelly, as it causes Death Moths to believe that the consumer is a Queen.

In spite of all of the positive qualities of Moth Jelly, it is incredibly addictive and exceeding the recommended daily amount (1-2 cups) will cause the user to become hopelessly hooked and desperate for more, even willing to go directly to the source and risk their lives. Side effects of over-consumption also include blurred vision, intense euphoria and uncontrollable giggling, and possible development of teratomas in their systems.

Usage

A lit Moth Candle.

The exceptional nutritional value, beneficial qualities and flavorful taste of Moth Jelly makes it a very valuable and highly sought after resource in the Backrooms, especially in levels with high quantities of Deathmoths within them. A single cup of Moth Jelly contains enough nutritional value to deny one from feeling thirst for an entire day, yet due to the object's rarity, most individuals will never get to drink it. The object additionally functions as a sort of trump card in trading, as it is usually seen as one of the items with the highest value; Moth Jelly can be traded for almost anything, with the Major Explorer Group noting that one jar of Moth Jelly is worth around four bottles of Almond Water. The positive effects that the objects has on a consumer’s mood has made it a popular form of anti-depressant as well as a food source, this however, unfortunately also adds to it’s addictive qualities.

Moth Jelly is also very versatile in cooking as it can be used to make a wide variety of different dishes, most notably desserts and sweets. Food cooked with Moth Jelly bestow unique, beneficial effects upon consumption, such as higher amounts of energy and faster running speed. Cooking Moth Jelly also slightly decreases its addictive qualities while maintaining its nutritional value and increasing its flavor. Food made with Moth Jelly have incredulous shelf lives, staying fresh far longer than certain food would, hot food stays hot longer and ice cream made with Moth Jelly never seems to melt.

Moth Jelly can also be used to make Moth Candles, which are special candles made by boiling Moth Jelly and then cooling it down into a wax-like substance. When a Moth Candle is lit, it will exude a sweet and soothing smell identical to freshly baked Moth Jelly Cake. Moth Candles have been observed to drastically lower a wanderer’s stress and induce a calmed yet incredibly focused state where the effected Wanderer gains heightened senses and reflexes for an average of 3-4 minutes. Because of this, Moth Candles are often used for meditation by some or simply to reduce stress and/or increase one’s concentration. They can additionally be used as light sources, and they are highly sought after by many groups, especially those holding ongoing missions in dark levels. As with other illumination sources, Moth Candles do not work in Level 6 nor do they produce any of their other side effects.

Royal Jelly Farms

Royal Jelly Farms' official logo.

Royal Jelly Farms is a sub-group created by the Major Explorer Group that functions mostly independently. As its name suggests, the group is dedicated to producing and distributing Moth Jelly and Moth Jelly-related products over the entirety of The Backrooms for the benefit of wanderers. The group distributes Moth Jelly by packaging it in small boxes and transporting those boxes to "safe" levels, such as Level 1, Level 4, Level 399 and so forth.

The group is said to house roughly 40 members, with their main public base being in Level 1, though it has around five official bases located in a few safe levels. However, the true base of operations for Royal Jelly Farms is unknown and unrevealed, most likely to prevent raids from Moth Jelly addicts, hostile wanderers and entities which have enough intelligence to view The Database and information about the group.

Royal Jelly Farms is also known for being involved in many crimes related to Moth Jelly, such as raids. They are known to frequently steal Moth Jelly from unsuspecting wanderers; they are yet to be stopped, and the Major Explorer Group does nothing about them as they function almost independently.
