N.A.X.O.S., short for the: Navigators of Anomalous eXploration and Obscure Spaces, is an organization established by Adriaan Levy in the early 1980s with the purpose of preserving select habitable levels and conducting exploration to uncover additional levels. N.A.X.O.S. stands by the principles of "ALL BEFORE ONE", meaning putting others before yourself, "OPEN ARMS", which means that you should take chances and try to be positive even in the worst situations, and "EXPLORATION ABOVE ALL", which is a metaphor in this case meaning that you should push out of your comfort zone and do stuff to better yourself, not stuff you do because you like it. Due to this, N.A.X.O.S. isn't the largest, but those who chose to stay are greeted with friendship.
The organization is temperate, and by far the most diverse of all groups, with the reason for this being the loose joining policy. The sole criteria for participation being that one must: A) Be in a N.A.X.O.S. Base for 1 year and B) Abide by the N.A.X.O.S. Principles and Rulebook. Due to this, N.A.X.O.S. is inclusive of wanderers, with many choosing to become part of the organization due to its flexibility, allowing members to work independently while still offering exceptional support and accommodation.
N.A.X.O.S's HQ is commonly referred to as 'Capital Ø' or 'Capital Nord'. Additional bases and outposts can be located on Level 154, the Absolute Infinity of the Unknown, Level 791 and much more. A List of all (documented) Outposts can be found at the bottom of this page. There are a total of 8 Documented Outposts, however, several more exist but aren’t documented due to their size.
Hierarchy[]
For the initial 6 years of N.A.X.O.S's establishment, Adriaan Levy served as the sole leader under a one-head policy. However, in 1988, when he relinquished his position as "Verkenner in Hoof," meaning 'Explorer in Chief,' the organization has since held elections every 6 Level -501 years for the title.

◇ Nexos: The group name given to all outpost and base leaders.
◇ Pioneers: Given to any member who shows interest in researching levels, entities, or effects.
◇ Explorers: Term given to all minor N.A.X.O.S. staff.
History[]
Founded in 1982, N.A.X.O.S. initially originated as a group primarily based on Level 1. Nevertheless, within its first year, the group experienced substantial growth, expanding to include over 2,000 members. This remarkable expansion occurred even though it was started by a group of three friends. By 1980, the group underwent expansion and commenced its efforts on Capital Nord at level -501. Additionally, they established their objectives to explore the backrooms and safeguard habitable levels.
In 1988, Levy resigned from the position of Explorer in Chief, initiating the first leadership election within the group. Following a closely contested race, Cyprus Jacobs eventually emerged as the second leader of the group. Under Jacobs’ leadership, the group would see a membership boom, reaching to just over 26 thousand members. As well, the discovery of Level 657 would happen during this time.
In 1992, Ciarán Varon was elected as EIC. His leadership was mediocre, actually swing a decrease in membership, to around 14k. However, his time in office would spur the exploration and settlement of levels, under his watch Level 791 was discovered and Base Khan and Outpost Nixha were founded.
After the 1998 EIC election, when Uther Kitta assumed the role of Explorer in Chief, the group experienced a mediocre growth in members and additionally a substantial number of new discoveries, including Level 238 and Level 725, were made under her leadership.
Since 2004, there has been steady growth in the group's achievements and membership, which currently stands at a minimum of 19,000 individuals across 135 documented levels.

N.A.X.O.S. currently operates a multitude of outposts with varying staff, between fully manned, jointly manned and partially manned. Most outposts take in wanderers, however some don’t, as they are for special purposes. They are divided using the CORET System, which is:

- Storage of Papersap.
- Base Elim is equipped with specialized containment units to store Papersap. These units ensure the substance's stability and safety, preventing any contamination or spoilage and help with trades.
- Inventory Management.
- The staff at Base Elim meticulously track the quantity and condition of stored Papersap. Detailed records are maintained to facilitate accurate trade and distribution.
- Trade Operations.
- Acting as a trading hub, Base Elim coordinates the exchange of Papersap with other groups within the Backrooms. Negotiations and transactions are conducted to ensure a steady supply of resources and materials in return.
- Wanderer Holding.
- Base Elim provides temporary shelter for wanderers who are in transition while exiting Level 865. The facility ensures they are safe and secure until their departure.
- The Database Servers.
- Located beneath Base Elim, The Database's servers house vast amounts of information on the Backrooms. Therefore, these servers are maintained with utmost care to ensure the security and integrity of the data.

- Analysis of Papersap.
- Detailed chemical and physical analysis of Papersap to understand its unique properties, reactivity, and potential uses. This includes studying its bioluminescent properties, viscosity, and interaction with other substances, specifically Masked Ink.
- Rehabilitation of Level 865.
- Researchers investigate the unique ecosystem of Level 865, documenting the flora and fauna, and understanding how they interact with each other and with Papersap. This helps in mapping out the biodiversity and ecological balance of the level. Continuous monitoring of environmental conditions is also done, such as temperature, radiation levels, and atmospheric composition, to try to help Level 865 sustain itself after the war.
- Entity and Ruin Observations.
- Detailed observations and documentation of the various entities inhabiting Level 865, such as the Colossus trees and Distortosaurs. Researchers study their behaviors, interactions with the environment, and any potential threats they may pose.
- Collaboration with N.A.X.O.S..
- Coordinating with other N.A.X.O.S. research bases to share findings, collaborate on large-scale projects, and ensure the efficient dissemination of knowledge. This collaboration enhances the overall understanding and application of Papersap. This has helped N.A.X.O.S. to become more well known in the Backrooms.
