Object5-box

The candle that burns twice as bright, burns half as long.
~ Lao Tzu

Description[]

Object 5.

Object5-box

Object 5, nicknamed by wanderers as Greek Fire, is an essential resource found within the Backrooms and is typically the first weapon one would procure during their journey through the Main Nine. Object 5 takes the appearance of a metallic clipped box, similar to a the outlook first-aid kit stripped of any label. The box contains an ordinary plastic lighter identical to those in the Frontrooms, and an unmarked green aluminium bottle lying on a foam insert. The lighter works as any ordinary lighter would, while the bottle contains a dark-yellow fluid with empirical statistics similar to that of vegetable oil.

The fluid in question is a highly volatile, flammable substance that can be used to start fires, heat food, and provide much-needed warmth inside the Backrooms. The fluid was nicknamed Object 5.3, while the bottle was nicknamed Object 5.4. The anomalous properties of Object 5 presents itself when the fluid is shaken inside of its original container. When violently agitated inside of its container for approximately 3 seconds, Object 5.3 gains universal oleophobicity. This indicates that all surfaces will repel it, similar to the behaviour of water on super-hydrophobic surfaces. The fluid will become nigh-frictionless with almost any medium it flows across, creating a mesmerising flowing effect. This new liquid was deemed as Object 5.31.

An accurate depiction of Object 5.31's behaviour.

Object5-simulation

While oleophobicity is not anomalous by itself, universal oleophobicity is an enigmatic behaviour that cannot be purely explained via diffusion through agitation. Combined with its combustive nature, the lighter transforms Object 5 into a deadly incendiary weapon. Lighting the bottle at its neck while pouring its contents out will send a steady stream of raging fire towards any desired target. Greek Fire cannot be extinguished via conventional means, because the inhibitor will simply slide off the puddle of Object 5.31 and the flame will continue to burn. Greek Fire can result in fatal burns and considerable damage to its target, may it be an entity, structure, or human enemy. Object 5's striking similarity to a napalm weapon dated back in the Eastern Roman Empire known as Greek Fire earned it the fitting name Greek Fire.

However, it is important to note that this oleophobic behaviour will begin to slowly fade after 10 minutes, until the anomaly disappearance all together in 30 minutes. Combined with the observation that this effect only takes place when the fluid is within its original container, it is widely believed that there is a coating on the inside of Object 5.4. The shaking induces a catalyst that results in some form of molecular alteration. This does not explain how the effect dissipates after a set amount of time, since chemical changes are hard to reverse. As of now, there is no equipment powerful enough to confirm nor deny this theory. The anomaly of Object 5 lies in the shadows.

Caution![]

Do not consume Object 5. It is important to give the liquid enough momentum pouring it in a downhill motion. Serious injury or death may result from contact with Greek Fire. In addition, attempting to use Object 5.3 like Object 5.31 will also have similar aforementioned dangers. This object's fire is just regular fire, and it does not affect entities like Lighters. Using Greek Fire effectively requires skill and technique, some of which are listed below.

Usage[]

Object 5 is a very powerful weapon. Users range from individual wanderers up to many well-known organizations, such as the Anti-Entity Agency, M.E.G., the Backrooms Investigation Foundation, the Entity Research Committee, and the Party Crashers. Listed below are some well-known techniques regarding Greek Fire.

Droplets

Pouring the fluid out in a stream of droplets allows them to coalesce into larger puddles. This is an efficient, effective way best used against solo targets.

Spray

Oscillating the bottle in a controlled angle while maintaining a steady stream allows the burning fluid to affect a wide angle. This technique is costly, but can prove to be very effective against groups of enemies. The Party Crashers demonstrated this technique during the Euphoric Wars.

Mechanization

Certain organizations have developed war machines. They pump this Object 5.31, mixed with conventional incendiary weapons like napalm at high pressures while igniting it with industrial lighters. A simple way to replicate this to a lesser degree is pouring Object 5.31 into a water bottle with a hole in its cap. Squeezing the bottle while igniting it will increase its range, accuracy, and power.

Countering Greek Fire[]

Stopping Greek Fire is no easy task. Its momentum, speed, and near-frictionless make it a formidable weapon. There are certain ways to quell its flame.

Primary Defences

Non-newtonian fluids like oobleck can trap it. This was demonstrated when Caius Taggert devised oobleck pitfalls all over Level Fun during the Euphoric Wars. Fireproof materials like aerogel also offer a fair amount of protection against its burns.

Statistics[]

Object 5.3 & 5.31 Emperical Statistics
Fluid Density Object 5's density is 2.44 × 10³ kg/m³ under STP conditions (101.3 kPa & 273.15K), around 2.5 times that of water. Its momentum per unit volume is far greater than that of water, allowing it to glide through obstacles.
Viscosity Object 5 has a viscosity of 80.0 Poise, or 8.00 Pa·s. Despite its viscosity, this fluid's incredible oleophobicity means that its density will not be pertinent unless impeded by an obstacle during its course of action.
Specific Heat Capacity Object 5 has a specific heat capcity of 2.15 × 10³ J/kg°С. It has a latent heat of vaporization of 8.54 × 10 ⁴ J/kg and a latent heat of fusion of 1.26 × 10⁵ J/kg.
Conductivity Like other hydrocarbon liquids, Object 5 is a dielectric, with conductivity no greater than 10.4 pS/m.
Type of Matter Object 5 is a homogenous mixture, a statement often brought into question because of Object 5.3's transformation into Object 5.31 through agitation.
Usage Statistics A puddle of Object 5.31 with radius 0.2m takes approximately 10 minutes to extinguish. The fuel will be consumed in the process.

Locations[]

Object 5 appears in any indoor level with considerable rarity, notably in levels with outlook akin to Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Level 5, Level 16, or Level 20.

Variants[]

THIS SECTION IS OPEN TO PUBLIC REVISION

Many of the mentioned variants are independently developed and tested. Experiment at your own risk. If you wish to add a varient, please ensure it is not of malignant intent and provide some explanation on its purpose.

Thank you for explanding the Greek Fire database.

  • Mixing Object 5 with Liquid Pain will result in "Liquid Inferno". It's the same as Greek Fire, but with... extraordinary explosive tendencies. The corrosiveness of Liquid Pain also allows it to burn through protection. The most popular variant.
  • Mixing Object 5 with Almond Water results in "Entity Detergent". It is very effective against entities for the same reason Almond Water is effective against entities.
  • Mixing Object 5 with Cashew Water results in "Entity Magnet". The flame sends entities into a blind frenzy. It's almost as if the entity "got drunk".
  • Mixing Object 5 with Moth Jelly results in "Moth to the Flame". The flame will be incredibly attractive to Deathmoths, incinerating them in the process.
  • Mixing Object 5 with Mixologist's Delight results in "Lighter's Delight". The flame can now affect Lighters, an inexplicable phenomenon.
  • Mixing Object 5 with Corruptionite results in "Corrupted Flame". The fire will bU!rn t0th&asfsdfsdfu,,.,/':;'``~YsjKfgd
  • Mixing Object 5 with Devil’s Ambrosia results in "Devil's Fire". The fire will send Slashers into a rage, but against the flame. This is a very effective way of distracting Slashers.
  • Mixing Object 5 with Nuclear Infection results in "Nuclear Flame". The fire will infect anything in its path with Nuclear Infection. This was conducted once in Level 630 in an extreme context, because using it elsewhere would be catastrophic.
  • Mixing Object 5 with acidic Carpet Fluid results in "Flaming Vapor". The fire coalesces into a fine mist upon hitting an object, which can disintegrate objects. (Mixing Object 5 with regular Carpet Fluid results in a useless dull purple sludge.)
  • Mixing Object 5 with Death Shrooms results in "Life-Killer". The flame will become highly corrosive and toxic that is capable of brutally lysing the cells of any organism such as flora, fauna and even microorganisms.

M.E.G. Base Alpha
The following log was documented between a M.E.G. interviewer and an anonymous wanderer, who had his first sighting of Greek Fire and was injured in the process.

—<COMMENCE>—

██████ ████████: So, you want me to talk about the fireball I saw flying down the hallway?

Interviewer: Yes.

██████ ████████: I was wandering down the halls of Level 1 yesterday. Suddenly, the lights turned off. I thought it would be my last minute.

Interviewer: I am assuming something incredible happened.

██████ ████████: You would be right. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a massive fireball comes flying down the hallway towards me. It was at that moment that I realised a pack of Hounds was behind me, and I just accepted fate.

Interviewer: But you are still alive, right?

██████ ████████: It missed me by an inch. I got first-degree burns all over my chest. The pack of Hounds did not react in time, and after two of them got roasted into ribs, the rest ran away. After 10 seconds the light turned on again. More miniature fireballs came down the same hallway, and I just ran in the other direction without looking back.

██████ ████████: It was very strange. It was like an ignited puddle on the ground, maybe it was levitating. I don't know. It was like water on ice, and it glided across the surface with incredible speed. Basically nothing stopped it.

Interviewer: I see. Did it present sentient behaviour?

██████ ████████: I don't think so.

Interviewer: Thank you for your time.

—<END>—

The fireball was never seen ever since. It is currently believed to have been an instance of Greek Fire.
