Description

Base State

This object is a blue octagonal plate made out of an unknown material. The plate is 1.6 feet in width and length, and 0.4 feet in height. The material is hard to destroy and heavy. The object itself weighs 10 pounds. The corners of the plate are imperfect and slightly crooked, described by some wanderers as looking like "somebody had carelessly glued them together". In either of the object's two states, the object emits a 420 hz hum near entities that gets louder if the entity gets closer. However, this property makes it so the object can't be used as an entity detector as it also gets louder when a wanderer gets close to the object, but it can be used to find the object when you are near it. The humming also makes this object risky to carry around near intelligent hostile entities such as Partygoers. In fact, these entities have figured out that if they hear the noise, a wanderer is nearby and will try to find the source of the noise.

When carrying the object for long periods of time (multiple days or weeks straight), sanity decreases much faster because of the constant aural stimuli thanks to the hum. This can be prevented by using liquid silence to mute the hum, but only for a limited time as eventually the liquid silence will be used up and sound emitted by blue octagons cannot be released from liquid silence using electric currents. In either of the two states, the object has a chance of disappearing when whoever is carrying it noclips. Some have theorized that the object is transported to either The Void or to a different level than the wanderer carrying it, so it is advised not to make unnecessary noclips to avoid losing it. The chance of this occurring is doubled in unstable Clusters.

In either of the two states, the object has a 0.0004% chance of disappearing at any moment. It is most likely that this happens because the object's instability makes it prone to noclipping. The chance of this occurring is increased tenfold (which is still very rare) in unstable Clusters. In either of the object's states, noclipping with the object in tow can transport you 1 to 500 levels higher or lower at your command. However, this can only be used to travel to positive levels, and will not work if used inside Sub-Levels, Secret Levels, or Negative Levels. In either of the two states, EMF meters will malfunction when pointed at the object, and after 10 minutes of being 1 meter away from it and directed towards it, and EMF meter will break. No method has yet been found to fix EMF meters after being broken like this, as no physical damage is done during the process. As a result, it is strongly advised not to carry the two objects together.

Expanded State

After being touched for 60 to 10 seconds straight, the plate expands in height and turns into a pole or stick. As the object transforms, it will emit a high pitched screeching noise that immediately stops following the transformation. After transforming, the object's width and length remain the same, but its height is increased to 4.6 feet. The object's weight remains at 10 pounds, which means that no matter is being added to the object and its molecules are spread out in a certain direction instead. The object will return to its base state after 60 to 10 seconds of not being touched.

Uses

This object is commonly used in its expanded state as a weapon because of its weight and seeming indestructibility. When swung with enough force, it has the ability to shatter bones. However, because of its size and weight it is hard to handle in combat. Because of its rarity, average wanderers usually don't seek out this object and typically use other, more efficient weapons instead. Some wanderers also use the object to escape from danger in an emergency by noclipping with it in tow. Due to its rarity, it is also sought after by collectors and used as a type of high-value currency in trading. The first and only confirmed transaction using this item was between M.E.G. and the Backroom Colonists, M.E.G. had given the colonists one Blue Octagon in return for several hundred crates of almond water. This transaction happened on June 11th, 1982, and there have been many unconfirmed cases of this item being traded since then.

Some large groups of wanderers such as the aforementioned M.E.G. and Backroom Colonists are currently trying to find a way to make an alarm system using both the object's hum and liquid silence. However, the object can and is still used as a less advanced alarm system. By placing the object nearby and doing something that doesn't involve moving closer to it, if the hum starts getting louder, that means that an entity or wanderer is closer to it than you are. However, this method is inefficient and rarely used as a result. The hum can and is also used for meditation and to calm the nerves of other wanderers.

Locations

The object can be found on the floor in Level 1157, and Level 1548 about as commonly as Almond Water can be found in Level 0. It can also be found in The Hub. However, only one of these objects spawns every 1000 square miles in The Hub.
