A faint golden light splits the darkness apart like a blade.
The snow on the ground feels unusual, like the freezing warmth of an alabaster blanket.
Yet I take it as a way for progress, a hope to find safety in the unknown.
It's ever-so-slightly cold, but it will pass.
The cold has dissipated into the cold night. That needs to mean something.
I've begun to see bright windows in some of these homes, but they're different than the Windows that I've come across before.
My experience with Level 9 has been somewhat of a breeze so far. No major entity attacks, no weird plagues, or anything else that could be considered dangerous.
Honestly, it should be a relief, but the lack of any danger so far is unsettling considering some of the stories I have heard about this place.
I'm going to continue onwards. Maybe I'll find an exit soon.
The lights are glaring. I can barely see.
These damn white windows are still here, following, watching, closing in.
I'm starting to feel paranoid.
It's as if the night fell into a temporary state of day.
A crossing. Reminds me of my time before the Backrooms.
The traffic lights are in stasis, a perpetual burgundy.
The trees ruffle at an unnatural volume. Deafening to some.
Yet the woods remain entirely empty; not a single soul seen in plain sight.
A strange house. This seems like a better place to sleep in then what I've had to deal with before.
The darkness is sickening; I barely possess the ability to look a few feet in front of myself.
There's a dark path beside it; where does it lead? My demise? My liberation?
Despite the risks, there's only one way to find out.
After walking for a while, the landscape is becoming greener. A bike path begins stretching out in front of me.
Cycling was a big hobby of mine. I used to cycle everywhere, up and down the front garden, then the road, and then eventually I expanded my views to the majority of my city.
If only I had a bike now. I probably would fall off, but at least it would be nostalgic to feel the pedals beneath my shoes again.
A faraway dream. I should focus on getting out of here soon rather than to dwell on the past.
The darkness has returned.
It asphyxiates me even more now.
Those blinding lights have emerged in front of me once more.
I can't turn back. I know that I must be close.
My supplies have ran out.
Is this where my clock chimes Zero?
Is this my salvation?
Phenomenon 93: "Procul Lumina"
Phenomenon 93, otherwise known as "Procul Lumina", is a somewhat mysterious circumstance that can be experienced within the confines of Level 9. One will normally encounter this occurrence through their exploration of the level, specifically at the point where they may feel like they have lost all hope. Procul Lumina manifests as a cluster of lights, normally vacillating between 3 and 20 luminescences, but this is not set, and some have rumoured that as many as around 250 lights can be observed from a singular instance of Phenomenon 93. They appear in more arboreal areas, with each light being approximately half a meter in diameter and of brilliant colouration.
Instances of this phenomenon will usually be observed somewhere on the line of the horizon, their bright lights illuminating the eternally dark sky, which makes them visible from quite a distance away. However, their exact appearance remains unknown due to a lack of information about Procul Lumina, although it is unlikely that they possess a physical body, which supposedly stays hidden within the darkness.
Upon gazing within these luminescences, one will find a sudden, rising, reportedly liberating hope, as if they have found an exit to Level 9, as evidenced by several independent reports. The wanderer may feel as if they need to run towards the lights, as after all their time in the level, there is some chance of escape.
A large debate is occurring within the Database over whether to classify Procul Lumina as a phenomenon or an entity. However, for the foreseeable future, it will remain a phenomenon. Reasons for this choice include:
Lack of body and other entity-like characteristics.
Unpredictable appearances: an entity that utilises the quantity of lights that Procul Lumina does is extremely unlikely to have the capacity to appear unexplicably.
Overall mysterious air surrounding it. Reports of it are scarce at best.
Disappearances caused by Phenomenon 93 are enigmatic in nature. It is unsure if wanderers actually find an undocumented exit or if they perish, but it is safer to avoid this occurrence in case that properties of the phenomenon may result in fatal consequences.

Day 9293 ~95
This is Marcel, in case anyone is reading this or if certain parts of this diary may have been lost. I appear to be nearing day 100 in this horrid out-of-pocket space. I've spent, or more accurately, wasted, my time here in this suburbanscape. The moon has been glistening down on me for the last few days, or even weeks. The eternal night never being chased away by the timeless day. It's been a pain not knowing which time it would regularly be. I feel like I haven't slept in days, yet at the same time, I feel as if the opposite would apply. The empty void, that is, the night sky, stares back at me everywhere I go, never retreating or backing off.
I glance at the cold asphalt roads, possibly wondering if it truly matters which road or path I'll take if all streets end up the same. Occasional streetlights appear and disappear in lateral movements and patterns, the sparsely populated homes watching ever-so closely, their vacantness outshining the neighborhood. A cold, yet fresh breeze of bitter air greets me ever-so often, the book pages being whacked back and forth while my slow-drying pen slowly depletes. Occasionally, ripping out entire pages as the text becomes intelligible. Albeit I continue onward, despite being illegible, it still allocates a safe space for me to rest within my mind.
Suddenly, something caught my draining attention off-guard once more—an ominous orb starts floating and shining over the forest in the distance, an uncommon view from the mundane. After a few seconds, more lights start to follow suit. Their bisque-colored lights illuminated the forest's edge. Moving in unnatural ways, tens of meters up and down, right and left within a matter of mere seconds, quickly overshadowing the night's empty sky. Some even double as high as the tallest tree crowns. Fear but also a sense of hope set in within my inner self. I for sure as hell wasn't getting out of here; a small gamble at an escape wouldn't hurt, would it?

Periphery Purlieu
After crossing entire cavern systems, diving through oceans, and blindly marching through darkness, I have ended up here.
A town forever cursed in devoidness, an empty road ringing free and clear.
While my close encounters with death itself may have been near, I won't fret or fear.
Even if the land may be endless, I won't be alarmed by the sheer unclear.
Long, iron poles are mounted into the ground, their torch reigniting anew in the heavens.
An alien sight, possibly from the devils, possibly from greater architects and their lessons.
Whatever it may be, it shan't stop me in my endeavors, even if, in its own way, it beckons.
Free myself from this dungeon that has captured my weapons and fly away like herons.
I journey through and through the empty suburban, when a sudden forest splits my way.
Flipped the mundane houses into disarray, as the dingy forest is left cynically on display.
I rush over the last asphalt and onto the clay, as I lead myself astray.
Sway around the bend through short grass and hay, as I leave the passé.
The trees block all noise and sound, leaving themselves just as devoid.
In the face of concern, the suburbs may as well lay destroyed.
Yet even here, I attempt to remain adroit, even if it may be best to avoid.
Albeit, this is not the time for dread or void, as I stay poised.
Through the dim and unknown, I wander and slide by any and all trees.
But suddenly a disease of bright-growing lights seizes the night sky in a breeze.
Flying around like giant fleas, as it stumbles back and forth in reprise.
Occasionally drowning out in seas beyond the trees with fluid ease.
Their white light engulfing the darkness entirely, a beautiful sight.
And that is in spite of their flight at an immense height.
How lucky a night must be to experience such a site.
Without requiring to think twice, I'll visit this luminous knight tonight.

Hey Robert,
Just getting back to you about the Phenomena 93 issue. We at the Backroom Colonists have gathered some curious results that you should note down.
We have managed to find a wanderer's video of their encounter with Procul Lumina. See the faint black parts? That's its body. That must mean that it's an entity.
We'd recommend getting the fuck out of Level 9, except if you want to conduct research of your own, of course. However, cases of this have tripled in the last month, and more of our personnel are disappearing. We assume that this supposed "phenomenon" is the cause behind this; it's our closest hint at the moment.
Now, I know both of our groups aren't on the best of terms right now, but please heed our warning. We can get over what happened last week. Keep this information in mind and update the current page. It is important that no unsuspecting or uninformed wanderer traverses Level 9 for the time being, lest they die to Entity 93.
Yours Truly,
Joe Hawes.

Greetings Joe,
We are aware of the mysterious air surrounding Procul Lumina; however, we cannot grant your group the wish of changing the current page. The singular image you have sent is not enough proof for us to change our minds about the current state of the phenomenon. Not only that, but there are also several pieces of evidence pointing against the phenomenon possessing an actual body.
Furthermore, we will not attempt to evacuate the wanderers that are currently within Level 9. Just in case this is a hoax or a false alarm, this could have detrimental consequences for our presence within the level. The current information about the phenomenon is more than enough to know to avoid it, as we suspect it's more of a weak cognitohazard. Level 9 possesses a lot more worrisome dangers than Procul Lumina.
Regarding the image, it is quite possible that the black lines you can see in the background are a result of VHS distortion. We had a similar case a while ago, and it's simply too hard to tell whether the lines in question are real or fake. Plus, there's already plenty of evidence gathered on the page itself, pointing towards it being a flying cluster of lights. While we are ready to correct our "mistake" if there is enough evidence of the existence of a body, I don't believe that this supposed "evidence" is enough to prove us wrong. While I don't want to hold the recent incident against you, nor do I want to suspect you, or perhaps even the Backroom Colonists, tampering with the evidence at hand, a grain of mistrust is unavoidable in this situation.
I, as well as a team of M.E.G. Operatives shall still explore this danger in case your observation turns out to be true. We will imminently update the page if this is the case. However, it is likely that Procul Lumina is mostly benign.
We hope you understand our decision,
Robert Lenson.

Subject: Regarding Phenomenon 93
Hey Robert,
Just getting back to you about the Phenomena 93 issue.
Entity 93, otherwise known as Procul Lumina, are lethal entities that can only be located within the confines of Level 9. Its numbers seem to be increasing at an alarming rate, and the reports that the M.E.G. and the Backroom Colonists have uploaded seem to reinforce this statement. Its nature is hostile, and if one finds an instance of Entity 93, the M.E.G. pleads them to flee, lest they get lured into its grasp.
A highly detailed photograph of Entity 93.
A case of Procul Lumina can be easily identified, for its light-like eyes permanently remain aglow by the horizon at night. These orbs have a diameter of around half a meter, and their numbers can vary between 3 and as many as 20, but rumours are present that suggest that this upper bound is easily surpassed, with some reporting creatures with up to approximately 250 eyes. However, these reports remain unconfirmed, and it is quite possible that the report was referring to multiple instances of the entity.
Its body, while impossible to see with the naked eye due to the creature's body absorbing around 99% of the light that humans can see, does in fact exist and can only be observed well with ultraviolet sensors. Entity 93 has four towering legs that connect to an insubstantial torso and hence help increase its height to a staggering 7.5 metres (24'7"), although this fluctuates from instance to instance. Each eye has its own neck-like protuberance connecting it to the main body. These appendages appear to have wire-like vessels that currently have no known use, but most suggest that they are similar to the optic nerves found within the eyes of humans. Cutting these, while not impossible, has proven to be a challenge due to the tough integument that envelops them.
Procul Lumina have been noted to traverse the level alone, but groups of up to 3, or rarely even more, can be found at once, perhaps serving as an explanation for the aforementioned rumours regarding the number of eyes that it has. Instances have the ability to, unknowingly to us, due to the limits of our audibility, call others to their location, typically used when facing a larger group. When measuring the frequency of one of these screeches, it was approximated to be 110 KHz, which is peculiar as they do not have any visible ear-like growths. Instead, it is speculated that they simply absorb sound through certain parts of their bodies, including a section of their legs that extrudes above their torso. It has been assumed that, therefore, it is incredibly easy to locate another case of Entity 93, as this frequency of sound is easily recognisable to them and that they have a gargantuan hearing range, in addition to their colossal hearing distance. These calls have been studied, and some calls are of different rhythms, and it is therefore assumed that they are intelligent and have the ability to communicate amongst themselves. Although tens of different calls have been recorded, it is uncertain if these comprise a language or are simply a by-product created by distortion and echoing over long distances.
Entity 93 is known to have the capacity of asexual reproduction, as after a certain amount of time, it utilises parthenogenesis in three phases to create an offspring: the Electrostimulation Phase, the Parthenogenesis Phase, and the Birthing Phase. Due to these observations, all instances of Procul Lumina are considered female.
The creature hibernates during this time, devoting the preponderance of its energy to reproduction, with some of it also being directed at chromatophores in their skin to camouflage with the area around them, which is also used to hide them while they sleep normally. The hibernation lasts for 5 months, with the first phase lasting for a month while the latter two last for 2 months each. The first phase utilises electrical stimulation from electrocytes within the ovary to shock the creature's undeveloped egg cells with the goal of initiating this parthenogenesis. The second phase carries out parthenogenesis and allows the daughters to develop before being released in the third phase out of an opening below their torso that is usually sealed.
On average, if this phenomenon succeeds, it allows the production of 5 daughters, which take another 3 months to fully develop. These daughters have smaller eyes while in development, which are usually half in diameter when compared. They have been determined to be fully camouflaged at all times and only the height of an average human at this time. While it is unknown if Procul Lumina is able to die of mortality, collapsed instances that have no discernible cause of death can very rarely be found.
Behaviours
While not appearing overly hostile from the wanderer's point of view, Procul Lumina uses guile to lure its victims to it instead. It searches for wanderers that are on the brink of insanity; it knows if they are by observing their actions carefully. If it deems them to be hopeless enough, it will illuminate its eyes, often temporarily gifting the wanderer with an intense hope that dissipates after running towards it. After that, it will merely descend upon the wanderer and consume them before they are utilised for one of two functions: either general energy usage or as stored energy for parthenogenesis.
Procul Lumina appears to be very well aware of the fact that its general body shape can be mistaken for a regular tree in the dead of night. It usually tries to lower its neck to be on par with the crowns of the nearby trees. On occasion, it can even be seen straightening its neck and pointing at the sky while also attempting to keep track of any possible prey. While these tactics are generally only used in extreme moments of desperation to avoid detection, younger Procul Lumina are the ones where this is seen the most. This is most likely due to their weaker light-deflection skin, which only truly develops with age.
Most instances of Entity 93 are prone to approaching every and all encounters with either humans or other creatures in a careful manner, even if they do not pose a threat to the gargantuan entity itself. Although they have no natural predators, they aren't impossible to take down. It is within the realm of possibility of toppling lone Procul Lumina when being smart and resourceful, yet this isn't recommended to be tried without the helping hand of a team. The most consistent way of taking down such a creature has always been to try and cut through its neck-like protuberances, as it is certainly easier than attacking its main body. However, the easiest way to escape Procul Lumina, by far, is to run the opposite direction from where one spotted it. Most of them don't chase after wanderers, which is probably due to the thick woods being difficult to traverse quickly or trying to find an easier target.
Discovery
An unknown wanderer captured their encounter with Procul Lumina, along with their journey through Level 9 as a whole. Before they died, they appeared to be on the brink of death, and so they succumbed to its trap. It is assumed that they, along with the many other victims of Entity 93, have perished.

Robert: I know that we've lost many, but we have to complete this final mission.
Operative Equis: Are you insane? Do you want to kill us all? What's the point of this?
Operative Edison: Yeah, I have to agree with Equis on this one. Robert, look, I want to get to the bottom of this just as much as you do, but it really isn't worth the risk.
Robert: I know, I know it sounds like a huge risk to take, but I plead, just trust me on this one. This won't be like last time, I promise.
Operative Edison: Why do you believe so?
Robert: We're more prepared now than ever before. We've learned from our mistakes, and now we can finally show this creature who's boss around here.
Operative Equis: Not buying it. Look, I don't want to see you as a crazy murderer sending us into this meat grinder, but you very much act like it right now.
Operative Edison: I don't know if we're actually fully ready. We've seen that thing, and I don't think he could beat it.
Operative Lima: I'm not sure about you guys, but I'm going with Robert, whether you like it or not. I do believe this mission will be different.
Operative Edison: I mean, I hope so too, but I'm just unsure about Robert's leadership capabilities. Especially since last time.
Robert: Remember, this is probably the closest we have ever gotten to partially documenting this new entity, and considering the current threat it poses in these suburban areas, the M.E.G. would be more than grateful for this.
Operative Equis: No, no, no! I am not doing this in the slightest. Go march to your death all you three want; I'm staying out of this.
Robert: Equis, we need to act together as a team. It's the only way this is going to be possible.
Operative Equis: No; furthermore, I am returning to the main base. I am not going to die here with you buffoons.
Operative Lima: Good riddance, good God.
Robert: We should really start preparing to move out of this place soon. I look forward to seeing a Procul Lumina in person as soon as possible.
Operative Edison: I really hope I'm not misplacing my trust in you, Robert.

Robert: Alright, so I know this is going to take a while. Finding an instance of Entity 93 might be rather more challenging than I thought.
Operative Lima: As long as we have enough supplies to live safely out here, I'm fine with it.
Operative Edison: I'll still hope for a quick solution to this. Robert, we're just going to snap a few quick pictures of it before scattering, right?
Robert: Mostly. I mean, we definitely need images of it, but...
Operative Edison: But...?
Robert: It would be nice to observe the creature from a safe distance as well. We barely know anything about its behaviour. How are we going to defend ourselves from a creature that we know nothing about?
Operative Edison: Yeah, I know, but I'd rather not sacrifice my own life in the name of science.
Robert: There's nothing to really worry about. We got this Edison; trust me, we'll be safe and sound in no time.
Operative Lima: I agree with Robert; this is an important mission, and we'd rather not fail on this one.
Operative Edison: I get it, I get it. But come on, do you know how many operatives go missing because of these dumb missions? It's always "in the name of science and exploration." What about the fucking safety of operatives and wanderers? I don't want to risk my life researching this dimension; I want to escape it.
Robert: And you can't escape an alien world without knowing what to do in certain situations. Knowledge is power, remember?
Operative Lima: Plus, it's best to fulfill this mission swiftly; I don't want to know what happened to Equis on his own in Level 9. This is a dangerous place, no matter how prepared you are. For all we know, he might already be-
Robert: That's enough, Lima; there's no reason to cling to the past. He abandoned us, and the rest of his fate is in his own hands. For all I care, we're safe in our current position.
Operative Edison: Uh huh.
> Loud crackling of nearby leaves and tree branches is audibly heard. <
Operative Edison: What the hell was that? You guys heard that as well, right?
Operative Lima: Yes, yes, I did.
Operative Edison: We should get the fuck out of here, and fast.
Robert: Not so fast; we're close. Very close, actually. The faster we get this done, the faster all of you can go home.
Operative Edison: This'll better work.
Robert: It will. Now, hush, be quiet.

Log PL-3
[]
>> Log Begins. <<
>> Location: Outpost Oculus, Level 9. <<
> Operative Edison can be seen trying to start the tape. <
Operative Edison: Is this thing working...? It seems like it, good. Now, where do I even start? I should mention that Equis was correct. This was an absolute disaster. I don't remember when the tape that Robert was recording got corrupted, but I assume it was sometime when we had an encounter with the creature we were searching for. I remember that Lima and I heard a bunch of rustling coming from the trees and bushes. Robert disagreed with our worries and told us to continue our march. Considering how loud the crackling was, I could've sworn we ran right past it multiple times; perhaps it was indeed stalking us, although I wouldn't know how that would be possible. It would've been simple to see its glowing eyes in the dark night; perhaps we just somehow missed it.
But I don't think I'll forget that one moment. That one moment of pure panic. I remember Robert looking through tree after tree, shining his flashlight out into the depths of the woods, searching for an instance of Procul Lumina. This whole mission was ridiculous; I hadn't even heard of an entity bearing that name before, and I've spent a good amount of time in Level 9. But then, the thing I had been worried about happened, just as I expected, yet it was still a shock. We all saw the light hit a solid dark surface, which quickly moved out of the way, the tree next to falling from a greater force, before it disappeared in the void of night.
At this point, I started running in the opposite direction, as fast as my little legs could take me. It wasn't long before I heard the creature emerging through the woods, crushing trees one by one, slowly revealing its horrid body to the rest of us. Lima started running at this point, but Robert wasn't fast enough. The creature gave off a horid screech, like a ship straining against a rogue wave during a storm.
I don't know what exactly happened to Robert; I just heard him screaming in agony, but I didn't manage to convince myself to turn around. I assume he was impaled by Procul Lumina. I wouldn't even want to begin imagining the pain he must've felt. It must've taken mere seconds to finish him off, as the creature began its chase of the rest of us. I was careful when maneuvering the forest, but I managed to find my way back to our outpost, where I am currently recording this. About Lima, I doubt he made it. He ran in the opposite direction I took, presumably in a panic. I saw the creature run the same way he did.
I'm honestly left speechless about this whole ordeal. Could I have prevented both of their deaths? Was there something I could've done? Maybe I should've tried to argue better with Lima and Robert. Equis was right about this situation; it was suicide. I'm probably going to retrieve the little supplies that are left within Outpost Oculus and then try to retreat to a safer base. I'm worried I'll encounter that horrid being again.
I will append audio of the entity onto this log that was cut off upon its attack before I abandon this wreck in order to flee to Vox; I assume that it was trying to communicate because I could spy more of them approaching the spot where Robert must have died. I have ran the log audio through equipment that is, fortunately, available to me to pitch it down so that it is audible.
Evacuate Level 9 before Vox falls too.

ㅤ To: M.E.G.
To the entirety of the M.E.G.,
I address a massive issue that has plagued us for too long now: Procul Lumina.
Ever since Outpost Oculus fell, cases of Entity 93 have plagued us. Base Vox fell a month ago because of these diseases, as you all know.
Us at C.L.E.F. have a specimen of Procul Lumina, one that we managed to murder during our latest extermination; it is currently being preserved in an outpost in Level 10.
We will study Entity 93 to find any weaknesses that we can abuse to annihilate these maladies once and for all.
Sincerely,
Samuel Equis.
